Commentary on The News
Posted September 10, 2012By Nathan A. Barton © 2012 Due to Rally and other work and certain family celebrations, I didn't write any commentary over the weekend or for Monday. But obviously, events continued over the Labor Day weekend, events important for us to understand and plan for or respond to. Tuesday, September 04, 2012 Stupid government thugs California: US DOJ targets library for e-book lending (CNSNews.com) The U.S. Justice Department says it has reached a settlement with the Sacramento (California) Public Library over a trial program the library was conducting that let patrons borrow Barnes and Noble NOOK e-book readers. DOJ and the National Federation of the Blind objected to the program on grounds that blind people could not use the NOOK e-readers for technological reasons. The Justice Department said the settlement is aimed at stopping discrimination... What fun! Books are next, of course, to be prohibited from libraries - since they cannot be used by blind people either; and audio books must surely follow, since they cannot be used by deaf people. The NFB will be happy, since that just leaves braille: ANYone - whoops, no, quadriplegics cannot use them, that I know of. Just close them all down: all that reading and learning just causes trouble, and I know a LOT of people that use books like drugs, anyway. Mama's Note: Yes indeed! People need to spend far more time out on the range shooting instead! Politics 2012 - First Consort Mrs. Obama’s 2nd-Term Agenda: ‘Impact Nature of Food in Grocery Stores’ (CNSNews.com) The incredible growth of the nanny-state is epitomized by her actions and proposals. Politics 2012 With U.S. Army Troops As a Backdrop, Obama Makes Congress the Enemy (CNSNews.com) Why didn't this happen three+ years ago? Of course Congress SHOULD be the enemy for the "messiah" and his minions - since it supposedly represents the states and people. Islamic war: Persian front Hezbollah: Iran Will Attack U.S. Bases If Israel Bombs Iranian Nuclear Facilities (CNSNews.com) Wishful thinking or is Hezbollah actually fronting for Iran? Can we believe them? We don't seem to be able to believe anyone else in this matter. Theft by government USDA’s $18 Million to Help ‘Beginning Farmers’ Also Benefits a Group That Promotes Collectivism and Off-Grid Living (CNSNews.com) MOST federal subsidy programs benefit groups with political agendas - and no one should have a problem with VOLUNTARY "collectivism" (consider Mennonites and Hutterites and Amish) or VOLUNTARY "off-grid living" (a form of low-key survivalism). The real problem is with ANY government "help" to ANY group: "beginning farmers" or "beginning ranchers" or "beginning computer programmers" or "beginning truckers." This is NOT government's proper role (assuming it has one). Islmamic wars: American front - Stupid government Justice Dept. Still ‘Assessing’ Whether Throwing Pig Legs At Mosque Site is a Federal Hate Crime (CNSNews.com) It has to be a "crime" before it can be a "hate crime" and it is hard to picture what is at best a petty misdemeanor as an excuse for federal action. Indeed, based on what the DOJ has ignored in the past, this might be a case of "free speech" - but only if it was targeting groups the "messiah" and his minions are opposed to. Mama's Note: Sounds like a real crime to me: wasting valuable food. Should be punished by having the throwers go hungry for a few days. That'll learn 'em. Politics 2012 - The first minion Biden to organized labor: 'We know who built this country' (CNSNews.com) "It wasn't you." (Point at random to someone.) The entire business is insane, isn't it? Islamic wars: South Asian front Pakistan: Muslim Cleric May Have Damaged a Qur’an to Frame a Christian Girl (CNSNews.com) I have been following this story for several weeks, and this is little different than the usual entrenched leadership's behavior: anything at all to blacken the name of your enemies. The cleric apparently has framed the mentally-retarded girl in order to whip up fury at the infidels. Communications Technology Super Wi-Fi poised for growth (The Raw Story) Good news or bad? Technology can be used and abused: this is good news for many of us, but that may include the surveillance meisters. Mama's Note: ALL technology, just as all tools of every kind, can be used for either good or evil. Rather than bemoaning this or that technolgy being used for evil by government, maybe people need to spend more time giving serious consideration to the reason they allow ANY government to have such power, let alone potentially dangerous tools. Theft by government (2 stories) Government Spending Climbed Enormously in 2011 US Budget Deficit Exploded in 2011 (Business Insider) Both the Democracy and the GOP claim they will fix this; neither will. In sum, a pox on both their houses: taxation and spending are BOTH out of control and have been for decades. Mama's Note: There never was any "control" of any kind. Once the government was given the power to tax and initiate violence, it was only a matter of time until it came to this point. Only the elimination of "legal" theft and coercion will "fix" it. Wednesday, September 05, 2012 Self defense Missouri: Man dressed as officer assaults woman in Clayton (Saint Louis Today) The attack happened about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hanley Road near Polo Drive. The woman was driving north on Hanley when an unmarked police-style car — with emergency lights on its dashboard — pulled her over. ... She struck the man in the groin, police say. Dispatchers said the man hit the woman with his fist, then drove off. Mama's Note: Good for her!! The sick thing is that if this had actually been a cop, she might well have been killed. The big difference is that an actual free lance criminal will break off and go away if resisted... cops don't. Nathan: Would the man have left without pulling her out of the car if she had said, "I'm carrying a pistol"? I notice that the police do NOT admit it COULD have been one of their own, not just "impersonating" or "a security guard." Mama's Note: Indeed, but she still would have been at greater risk from a "real" cop or, possibly, even a "real" security guard type. They don't usually have the same limitations and incentives as the free lance criminal... and are often psychologically programmed to escalate the violence when resisted - rather than run away. Theft by government It's Official: Federal Debt Tops $16 Trillion (CNSNews.com) The "official" debt is ONLY $16T - the real debt is probably six times that: either way, it is impossible to pay off without some kind of hyperinflation in which the dollar is only a thousandth of its present value: an economy in which a 20-ounce Coke costs $2,000 and a loaf of bread $3,000 and a gallon of gas $5,000. Mama's Note: It can't be actually "paid off" ever, no matter if everyone in the country was taxes 100% of what they produced And the parasites quit spending anything. Nobody would produce anything at that rate, which is just what is happening anyway, of course. And the creditors wouldn't take the zillion dollar note as payment either. This is going to be a real mess. Theft by government U.S. Debt Now $136,260 Per Household—Up 50% Under Obama (CNSNews.com) I am, of course, so grateful for living the last three-and-a-half years under the benevolent control of the Democracy, because of the enormous strides it has made in reducing our national debt and erasing the deficits. What a blessing. This is far more than the average net worth of an American household, of course. And it is FAR more than the average PERSONAL debt these households carry. Stupid government tricks State Dep’t Disputes That U.S. Envoy Bowed Before Statue of Dictator (CNSNews.com) It is important to show proper respect for the traditions of your hosts, and to respect their ancestors and betters. The Azeri surely understand this, and NOT think that the US is accepting the thug's son as dictator in control. Culture wars: government war on religion Pelosi: GOP 'May Have a Religious View About Abortion -- but Birth Control?’ (CNSNews.com) So if I understand it, we can only have "religious views" about SOME things and not others. Right? This should be shocking coming from Pelosi: after all, the Roman Catholic Church (of which she pretends to be a member) has a "religious" view about birth control: a view she obviously considers to be illegal. Politics 2012 Strickland: ‘If Mitt Was Santa Claus, He Would Fire the Reindeer and Outsource the Elves’ (CNSNews.com) I suppose it is better than beating up the parents to make them cough up the money for the presents. First Consort - Politics 2012 (3 stories) Michelle Obama: ‘So Many People Had a Hand in Our Success’ (CNSNews.com) And so many people have control over what they say and do! Some people complain that she is America's Evita (Eva Peron); I think Imelda Marcos is a closer match. Michelle Obama Tweets About iVillage, Urging Moms to Visit a Website That Includes Sex Tips From Prostitutes (CNSNews.com) To her, is there any difference? Being President ‘Reveals Who You Are,’ First Lady [sic] Says (CNSNews.com) Especially when people really knew so little about you BEFORE you were allowed to move into the White House. Politics 2012 Arkansas Dem: Obama Wants to ‘Take Us Back’ to Clinton Era (CNSNews.com) Methinks he is off by a few centuries: Maybe the Louis XVI Era? Cake, not bread; taxes for all but the new nobility and clergy? Star chambers and carte blanc for arrests? The differences between the pragmatist Clinton and the ideologue presently occupying 1600 PA are obvious: a second term for the "messiah" would be very much different than the murderous and corrupt later Clinton years. Congress in action Ex-Sen. Chafee Says He Left GOP Because It Lacked ‘Fiscal Responsibility’ (CNSNews.com) Ah, I might agree with him, but he's apparently joined the Democrats. Who are, of course, well known for their fiscal responsibility. Chafee's use of this phrase is code-speak for "raise taxes more and more and spend like a drunken sailor." Stupid government Midnight Regulation: Decisions in the Dark (MERCATUS CENTER ) Rushed midnight regulations are an average of 4.3 points worse on the Mercatus Center's Regulatory Report Card than non-midnight regulations... The ability to quantify this is a bit mysterious, but I have no doubt that hastily written and implemented regulations, like hastily written and passed legislation, is FAR more damaging to business, families, people, communities, and the economy. Our right of self defense Michigan: Gun advocates outbid Detroit police for unwanted guns at buyback event (Michigan Live) "Gun advocates, in competition with Detroit police, offered a buyback program of their own Thursday. As police conducted a gun buyback event at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 10400 Stoepel in Detroit, about a dozen protesters stood across the street making offers of their own. 'Guns Wanted! Cash' and "Cash for guns,' their signs read. They beckoned those in line with their guns concealed in towels and bags, to come across the street for a better price." (08/30/12) Good for the "protestors" - and they bought a few. All the police are doing are disarming more and more people making them more easily victimized by thugs. Science Study: Organic food benefits to health are "minimal" (Arizona Republic) "Patient after patient asked: Is eating organic food, which costs more, really better for me? Unsure, Stanford University doctors dug through reams of research to find out -- and concluded there's little evidence that going organic is much healthier, citing only a few differences involving pesticides and antibiotics. Eating organic fruits and vegetables can lower exposure to pesticides, including for children -- but the amount measured from conventionally grown produce was within safety limits, the researchers reported Monday. Nor did the organic foods prove more nutritious." [editor's note: I can hardly wait for the fallout from this one - SAT] (09/03/12) This is sure, as Steve indicates, to generate controversy. But don't expect it to be a "public" one - because the environists and others have too much invested in the myth of organic foods to let mere science get in the way, any more than they do for evolution or global warming or government schools. Mama's Note: The "organic" food promoters have been touting their stuff as "more nutritious" in every way for many years. They've insisted that conventional farming "robs" the soil of necessary minerals and other nutrients. Now at least some of them are changing their tune. Organic Reaction: Farmers Annoyed, Not Threatened By Stanford Study Courant Business Page writer Dan Haar reports: They are perturbed but not alarmed. Perturbed because the Stanford report looked at health effects far too narrowly, and, anyway, missed the whole point of the organic movement — it’s not about better nutrition, it’s about a healthier planet and a sustainable food system. Theft by government Is It Too Late to Fix Social Security's Finances? (ECONOMIC POLICIES FOR THE 21st CENTURY) If a financing solution cannot be reached, then Social Security's self-financing construct would need to be abandoned... I suppose this is a tactful way of saying that the Ponzi scheme has reached the end of its run. There ARE solutions but they involve things that are (so far) off the table - at least until the Tranzis show more of their true nature. Mama's Note: The ONLY "solution," financial and otherwise, is to eliminate all of the government ponzi schemes. But we know that won't ever happen until actual freedom breaks out. They'll never do it voluntarily. Government-run, tax-funded schools Public High Schools Are Not Doing Their Jobs (U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT) According to ACT, only 25 percent of students in the class of 2016 are proficient in English, math, reading and science; more than 25 percent failed to demonstrate proficiency in any subject at all... Oh, like THIS comes as a surprise! But never fear, the "public schools" are still performing their INTENDED purpose: to train slaves for the state. THAT part of the education seems to be going very well. Stupid government Obama Mileage Mandate Will Fuel Auto Disaster (INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY) The Honda Fit would need to get 61 miles per gallon by 2025 to satisfy new "corporate average fuel economy" standards -- double what it gets today... There is very little likelihood that the FedGov will survive long enough to enforce this particularly stupid action. This smells like King Canute telling the tide to not come inland. Mama's Note: I have no idea what the "Honda Fit" looks like, but I got 60 MPG in my Geo Metro from about 1989 to 1997. Thursday, September 06, 2012 Politics 2012 Gallup: Obama Enjoys Massive Lead Among Those With No Religion (CNSNews.com) No, really? Considering how much he had catered to this part of his base, it would be shocking to NOT see a massive lead. Of course, the excuse is that the GOP is in thrall to the "religious right extremists" (see the next story) but a careful analysis of the GOP indicates this is not the case: whatever religious affiliations the tea party movement has, they've been carefully neutralized together with the GOP itself. Politics 2012 Clinton: 'Far Right' Controls GOP, Obama Committed to Cooperation (CNSNews.com) This is one of the major propaganda themes of the Democracy this year: too many "libertarians" also spout this line. At the same time, I'm sure that the "messiah" IS committed to cooperation: the thing is, cooperation with WHO? The Unions? He and his handlers/minions treat them like a rich and generous but dotty aunt. All the other special interest groups seem to be sharing (taking turns) from a very small pot of bennies. Overseas? Laughable. It seems as we may just have to wait and see who he is REALLY cooperating with. Politics 2012 Boos and Jeers as Democrats Revise Platform to Include 'God,' 'Jerusalem' (CNSNews.com) A convention resembles a mob in many ways: the Democracy's conventions more than most (though I don't let the GOP off). Remember that most of those present are the true believers, like the couple in a WaPo article that scrimped to save from their unemployment benefits to go to Charlotte. These are the true Tranzi minions: willing shills for the Tranzi elite who are sitting up at the front podium or (like Mrs. Clinton) watching from afar to make sure that their plans are on track. The entire platform business MAY have been overreaching by some of these fanatics, but might also have been yet another distraction. Theft by government - Collapse CBO: Federal Healthcare Spending to Surpass All Discretionary Spending By 2016 (CNSNews.com) Hardly: because by then, the rest of the federal budget will be increased as well, and the conditions made even worse. IF the FedGov can stagger along for another four years, which seems more and more unlikely. Politics 2012 Sandra Fluke: Paul Ryan 'Would Allow Pregnant Women to Die in Our Emergency Rooms' (CNSNews.com) The DNC was SUCH a paragon of civility, no? This woman is (literally) a poster child for hypocrisy because she thinks that government should stay out of her bedroom and womb, while at the same time, she is DEMANDING that the government pay for her birth control and abortions (resulting from her activity in the bedroom). Theft by government - Welfare USDA Offers Tips for Getting More Seniors on Food Stamps -- Bingo and Crossword Puzzle Parties (CNSNews.com) It is essential that government services - and the "client" numbers - continue to grow, lest the entire system collapse more quickly than it is. We already have about 1 in 6 Americans on SNAP: what is their goal? They know that the MORE welfare given out, the MORE the clientele will support the system and vote themselves more and more. We've seen this with the prescription drug welfare, the original Medicare, and all the rest. What does puzzle me is the mental state of elderly people. As a young man in the 1970s, I saw the elderly (60s and 70s) playing bingo and having puzzle parties (and the elderly Navajo women wearing the long traditional skirts and blouses and not speaking any English), while those who were just in their 30s and early 40s were smoking pot, wearing hot pants (the women, at least), and speaking in English. Now, 40 or so years later, the "elderly" in their 60s-80s are playing bingo and having puzzle parties and wearing long traditional skirts and blouses and apparently have forgotten how to speak English... or how to get an ID card or vote for liberty. What is going on? Politics 2012 - The "messiah" Democratic Platform: Obama 'Rescued' Auto Industry -- GM, Chrysler . . .and Ford? (CNSNews.com) And Daimler and Volvo and Fiat and Renault? The entire concept is a joke, anyway. Politics 2012 - The first minion Sununu: Cloning’s Illegal So We’ll ‘Have To Settle For One Biden at a Time’ (CNSNews.com) Well, I for one feel much better, knowing this. Two court jesters is one too many, of course. Even though I wasn't aware of its illegality. Politics 2012 - Military service Half of Military Voting Assistance Offices Not Working As Law Intended, Report Finds (CNSNews.com) Of course not - the rules and the rest of the hoops have gotten increasingly difficult for the best intentioned officers to take care of the process. And you know what, EVERY soldier (and their family members) HAS to have a government-issued ID in order to vote. The "messiah" - Tyranny GAO: Obama Admin Circumvented Law with Welfare Waivers (CNSNews.com) Now, if a court would decide this - but fat chance of that. The rot is too deep into the structure. Politics 2012 - Fraud Dem Platform: Voter ID Laws are 'Unnecessary Restrictions' on Young, Elderly, 'People of Color' (CNSNews.com) Too many "libertarians" agree with this, sadly. The real solution is to reduce the "importance" of voting by removing government power. At least the libertarians are not so hypocritical as the Democracy: these same "young, elderly, and people of color" must have a government-issued photo ID to fly, to ride an intercity bus or train, to buy smokes or drinks or cash a check, but it is an unnecessary restriction to vote? Politics 2012 - Stupid people These two stories remind me of an irrational part of American (and Western) civilization - the idea that being a good (and fashionable/popular) actor or other form of entertainer makes people who are often little more than prodigies and whose IQ is no more than double their shoe size means that their political opinions are worth reporting. ‘Newman’ Says It’s a Mistake to Lump All Entertainers As Democrats (CNSNews.com) Yeah, there are a handful - shunned and bitterly attacked by their co-workers, who are Republicans and a VERY few who are Libertarians or Conservatives and NOT the Tranzis that 99.5% are. But even MOST of the Libertarians are minarchists, and most of the Conservatives are neo-cons. A pox upon them! ‘Monk’ Star: Public Expected Too Much from Obama (CNSNews.com) Shaloub was at the Democratic National Convention on behalf of the Creative Coalition, which lobbies for more funding for the arts. I like this man's acting - enjoyed the show (on DVD and NOT network TV) - but he is one of the 99.5% Tranzi. Government art makes as little sense as government church or government school or government medicine - unless you are a Progressive or Socialist of some stripe. Friday, September 07, 2012 The Crash of 2009 Record 88,921,000 Americans ‘Not in Labor Force’—119,000 Fewer Employed in August Than July (CNSNews.com) The numbers of "unemployed" are down, but the total number of employees are down, too. The difference is obviously due to an uptick in migration to Mars or Vensus. And of course, all those "undocumented" workers (border jumpers) who have gone back to Mexico or Honduras or where ever. Seriously: this has become a monthly ritual: the claim that "unemployment is better" because the rate went from 8.3 to 8.1 percent, that fewer jobs (96,000 instead of 120,000) were "created" but that FEWER and FEWER people are employed: only about 66% of men (lowest since they started tracking that in 1948: 64 years) are in the workforce). And keep in mind, using the measurement methods used up to the Carter administration, we have TWENTY-TWO PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT! This is NOT a recovery: there has not BEEN a recovery - no matter how you twist the data and the definition. Theft by government $10 Trillion Withdrawn From U.S. Treasury This Fiscal Year Alone, Treasury Says (CNSNews.com) ... How can this be? The answer: The federal government needs to churn through trillions of dollars each year above the level of current annual federal spending in order to maintain its $16 trillion debt—much of which is held in Treasury notes that mature in anywhere from 2 to 10 years and Treasury bills that mature in anywhere from a few days to less than a year. This is confusing and filled with numbers, but in essence, the FedGov has to refinance its short term debt over and over again: something like an AVERAGE of six times a year. This is very similar to using ONE credit card to pay off another, and getting charged a transaction fee each time you do it. It is stupid, and it harms us even more than the debt itself does. The story tells all about who owes what, and how things are going downhill VERY quickly. The "messiah" Obama Mentions Compromise, Then Lists What 'I Refuse to Go Along With' (CNSNews.com) Ah, yes, let us compromise, said the bear to the lost human: you are cold and I am hungry: I will let you have me as a fur coat and you shall fill my stomach! Why bother to go through a list: it is clear what has been off the table since January 2009: anything to do with controlling government and permitting liberty. The "messiah" Putin: Obama Is ‘Very Honest’ And ‘Sincerely Want to Make Many Good Changes’ (CNSNews.com) Of course - good changes from the Russian point of view. Honest? Yeah, just like Abe Lincoln. Tranzi tricks - The "messiah's" minions ‘Paying for College Is a Shared Responsibility,’ Education Secretary Says (CNSNews.com) I don't even agree that PARENTS should share any responsibility for paying for college: it is the STUDENT's responsibility and choice. It is no more government's business to "share" anything with a college student than it is to share something with a business owner or share the use of a house: (that is called quartering and it is illegal). Politics 2012 McDonnell Calls Democratic Platform Vote a ‘Debacle’ (CNSNews.com) No, really? I got to listen to that vote several times, and it was as much a joke as the GOP vote on procedures was: there is no way that 2/3 of those present sustained that vote. And the way it was done made it even more obvious. Islamic wars: American front Survey Shows 74 Percent Increase in U.S. Mosques in Past Decade (CNSNews.com) Which sounds huge, until you consider that an increase from 100 to 174 is a 74% increase: as contrasted to the millions of church meetinghouses in the US. We have ALWAYS understood that liberty includes the right to practice the religion of your choice (unless you were an AmerInd, of course, and living on a reservation); this is no threat UNLESS those millions around them stop preaching the Gospel. That is what happened in Arabia and then in the Eastern Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire in the 600s and 700s: Muslims in essence filled a vacuum in people's hearts who no longer had a living faith but a rote, ritualistic religion. Islamic wars: American front Ellison: ‘There’s Nothing Wrong With Being a Muslim’ (CNSNews.com) Probably not - the same can be said for a Ba'alist or a Moloch worshiper or a follower of the Feathered Serpent or Kali. BUT there is nothing RIGHT about being a muslim either, in my opinion: Islam is a religion of tyranny and oppression and violence (aggression) against others. I have often said that I can see no way that one can be a faithful follower of Mohammed (peanut butter und honig) AND believe in God-given liberty: only those deemed heretics from their faith by the vast majority of their fellow Muslims can do so. War on some drugs Jimmy Carter: Decriminalize Pot (CNSNews.com) This comes about, what? 36 years too late? Maybe Mr. Carter has finally started to understand the lessons of First Samuel and that morality cannot be dictated or enforced by human government? At the time he was in office (1977-1981), the War on Some Drugs was really in its infancy - certainly formable stages - and could have been ended without the millions of dead and billions upon billions of dollars. Nixon and Ford cannot be tried for their crimes in this matter: Carter CAN be. Culture wars: killing babies Actress Kathleen Turner: How Would a Human Embryo Know It Has Human Rights? (CNSNews.com) Good point - how does an idiot like YOU, Ms. Turner, know YOU have human rights? (Or for that matter, what human rights ARE: life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness (property), including such things as freedom of speech and religion, right to keep and bear arms, and all the rest.) Of course, the same thing can be said for pretty much any child under age 12 or 13; anyone with an IQ lower than 60 or so; and anyone born and raised as a slave that has never been taught better. To Ms. Turner, obviously, all of these groups are candidates for elimination. Culture wars: killing babies Pl. Parenthood Prez: Without Birth Control 'Few Women Had Opportunity to Finish School' (CNSNews.com) What absolute garbage THIS is - maybe it was true for those who could not keep their panties on, but then, that was in the days when little things like virginity and chasity meant something outside the dictionary, and when gentlemen ALSO kept their pants zipped up. Politics 2012 Former SNL Star: Democrats ‘In Every Way Anti-God’ (CNSNews.com) But then, the GOP ain't exactly "pro-God" no matter what they claim. They think God is "pro-GOP" maybe, but based on the booing, the Democracy would reject an endorsement by the Father. Congress in action - Statists and Tranzis Sen. Merkley: Rights Come from God, and Constitution Supports Same-Sex Marriage (CNSNews.com)... And five-legged dogs, too! West Wing Actor: Rights Come from ‘Piece of Paper’ (CNSNews.com) ... but not in the way he thinks - "For you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free!" John 8:32, normally written on a "piece of paper." I do not dispute the power of the written word, but Someone had to write it! Rep. Van Hollen: ‘Our Rights Are Derived from God and Nature’ (CNSNews.com) These three stories are a good example of the contrast between the IMAGE that the GOP and the Democracy want to present, but in practice, there is little difference: the GOP is as willing to steal away God-given rights as the Democracy is willing to take away the rights written on a piece of paper. **************** Your comments and feedback are welcome!
