Libertarian News and Commentary -- Gossip and Rumors and Alarums!
This is a special section, using a style I am considering for when The Price of Liberty converts to a blog format later this year. Please let Mama Liberty and me know what you think.

The intent is to simplify the posting by eliminating the categories and some other elements, while commenting in depth on fewer items. Sometimes I'll have a snippet of the actual story or commentary, but not always.

Should Obama & Congress Be Arrested Under The NDAA?
This seems to be a legitimate claim that because the Congress has approved and the White House has paid money to various Syrian groups who are listed as terrorist organizations and have direct ties to Al Queda and other groups, they have (as American citizens) made themselves subject to the National Defense Appropriations Act sanctions and should be detained and even tried for these crimes. Of course, we know it isn't going to happen, either because there are some loopholes in the NDAA or just because THEY are the ones who do the detaining and don't get detained. Of course, after the revolution, then they CAN be detained and tried (those still alive, at least) and then dealt with suitably: perhaps sent to Gitmo.

Obama Considers Usurping Congress & Using Executive Order On Cybersecurity
The article points out that the White House has already done this several times, most infamously on the "Dream Act" EO, so that the White House thinks they can get away with implementing much of the now failed Cyber Security Act. This writer seems to think that could include the post-Aurora rider banning sale or ownership of high normal capacity firearm magazines. I would think that there would be a GREAT temptation in the White House to do this, and that Congress would do little or nothing but whinge about it. Whether it includes the magazine-ban rider remains to be seen: the White House isn't just going to put the whole bill into an EO. If they do it, or even try, it will just move the First Citizen that much farther down the path of the illustrious Caesar Augustus.

Hitler’s Youth Alive in England. Is U.S. Next?
This is NOT the bravely-uniformed, marching type HJ that the videos in 2008 and 2009 reminded us of, but an effective and insidious system of indoctrination (propaganda) to get British school children to accept that taxes are good, more taxes are better, tax evasion and avoidance is evil, and that reporting family, friends, neighbors, and businesses for evading and avoiding taxes is good and the way to personal fame, popularity, and wealth. HM Revenue Service (equal to our IRS) is going into the schools to do this, and the writer thinks we might copy this in the US. We don't have to: we are already doing this: we have DARE with the cops in the schools already, teaching government propaganda and enlisting snitches; the IRS has its propaganda embedded in school texts from first grade on, and fairly frequently the students (and teachers) DO report their family and others for violations of all kinds of laws. Why limit it to just taxes, when you can include weapons and failure-to-recycle and drugs and complaints about the First Citizen?

How Historical Myths are Keeping Americans Stupid
The particular myths discussed here have to do with a Fox host repeating the old canard about everyone believing the earth was flat before Columbus, but there are many MANY more far worse than that:
- that "uncontrolled capitalism" caused the Great Depression
- that FDR saved the country from the Great Depression and Fascism
- that Lincoln saved the Union
- that the War between the States was primarily over slavery
- that the US entered the Great War (WW1) to make the world "safe for democracy."
- that the US leadership was taken by surprise with a Japanese sneak attack at Pearl Harbor.
- that more guns results in more crime.
- that more cops results in less crime.
- that the most important action to take to solve a social or economic or political problem is to pass a new law.
- that the United States could not function under the Articles of Confederation.
- that the Constitution establishes a "wall of separation" between church and state.
- that the Electoral College is an evil institution and that no one really can vote for President and Vice President.
All these things and many more are as much a result of people BEING stupid as they are about "keeping" people stupid. Anyone with a 6th grade reading level and the most simple of Googling skills can find the truth about these things for themselves, despite what they are spoonfed in the government-run, tax-funded schools. But, of course, they do NOT.

Now back to our usual format:

Common Sense
No number is greater than one
(Liberty For All by R. Lee Wrights)

"When it comes to individual rights, no number is reater than one. One person, one hundred people, one thousand people, one million people do not have any more rights than the individual. Nor are the rights of a group greater or more precious than the rights of an individual -- because they don't exist. All rights are individual rights. There is no such thing as 'group rights.'" (08/04/12/)

Lee's words are blunt and true, and only common sense - but even too many "libertarians" will refuse to read and heed them.

Nazgul - Stupid government
Appeals court throws out pastors' HCPA challenge
(The Raw Story)

"A Sixth Circuit appellate court threw out a lawsuit in which a group of anti-LGBT pastors alleged the 2009 Hate Crimes Prevention Act violated their civil liberties. According to the Wall Street Journal`s Law Blog, the court called the lawsuit 'unnecessary' and derided it as a 'political statement' rather than an actual grievance with the law. The Michigan pastors filed the suit in 2010 on the grounds that the anti-hate crimes law could lead to their prosecution for denouncing homosexuality, which they see as a spiritual duty." (08/02/12)
Raw Story, of course, is a bigoted electro-rag which adds hatred of christianity (in whatever form or near-christian form) to its proud support of homosexuality and homosexual activists. But this is actually a win for these "pastors" in the form of PREVENTATIVE justice: it will be harder for some zealous pro-homosexual or just plain publicity-seeking cop or DA to arrest them for a hate crime just for preaching, since a court has said that they ARE free to preach against such things.

Civil Rights Group Labels Sikh Temple Shooter As White Supremacist
(CNSNews.com)

Based on what we are told (big caveat in this case), this appears to be correct. But we hear a LOT of conflicting "information" about what really happened. Like the other recent shootings, there are a LOT of questions that I do not expect EVER to be answered.
Mama's Note: A number of eye witnesses are saying that there were definitely four shooters... and it is fairly well established that the surveillance cameras were all turned OFF at the time. Hmmm, such a co-inki-dink!

White House ‘More Precisely’ on Unemployment: ‘Rate Rose From 8.217% in June to 8.254% in July
(CNSNews.com)

Like the data is accurate to this number of significant digits? Give me a break, people. The key thing is, it ROSE and yet, the "messiah's" election poll numbers rose as well. We are dying.

Mama's Note: Of course, the actual REASON for the whole economic meltdown is carefully ignored, all too often even by people who should know better. Government created fiat "money," bureaucratic regulation at every level, control of education/medicine/ manufacturing, government insane debt, taxes and tax driven disincentives are all squarely to blame for unemployment and every other ill that besets productive people across the board.

Watchdog Assesses Degree of Religious Freedom in Muslim States’ Constitutions
(CNSNews.com)

As I recall, people used to do that for Communist countries, as well. And frankly, who cares? When the official members of the Ummah (the Dar Al'Islam) all have negative values in being rated for religious freedom (Even for Muslim sects other than their own version), what does it matter if they are 10th worst or 9th worst?

GOP Wisconsin Senator: ‘Government Is Something to Fear’
(CNSNews.com)

“What’s even more sad is far too many Americans were never taught the basic premise, and it was that government isn’t something here to solve our problems,” Johnson said. “Government--we need it,” Johnson said. “But, by and large, government is something to fear because as government grows, our freedoms recede.
AMEN! Like a rattler, a rabid dog, or a black widow spider. No, I do NOT agree with Johnson that we "need" government - but for someone in office to state even this much is incredible - especially someone from Wisconsin high enough in the GOP to get elected. Will he make a difference? Yes, but not in Congress - simply because there are at least SOME people in Wisconsin that must agree about fearing government and will learn to be anarchists as a result.

Mama's Note: I much prefer to use the words "self owner" instead of the polluted word "anarchist." But with that word difference, I very much agree.

Theft by government
Sales Tax Holidays Are a ‘Gimmick,’ Says Tax Policy Expert

Of course - but like many other advertising gimmicks, a lot of people can take advantage of it and save some money. But for the state or town as a whole, it probably amounts to nothing but some eyewash.

Bullying Has Ripple Effect on Health Care, Business, Law Enforcement, Says DOJ
(CNSNews.com)

A grand claim and gesture, and a basic fact of human life. Which is why people need to be able to defend themselves against bullying: physically by being armed and trained, and via communication means - knowing how to write and respond (in essence, to be able to defend themselves in THAT arena). This is not what DOJ wants, of course: they want more money to "defend us" and they want more laws to make more things crimes. Just because something is wrong does not mean it should be illegal, as millennia of history demonstrate. Key point here is that most bullies develop their skills and find their victims through the GRTF schools; and the biggest employer of bullies is of course the various governments: federal, state, and local.

After Two Raids, Justice Dep't Decides No Criminal Charges Against Gibson Guitar Company
(CNSNews.com)

No, but they fined them hundreds of thousands of dollars on "administrative" and "civil" charges, as well as all they cost Gibson in lost production, legal expenses, and more. So the DOJ wins again!

Politics 2012 - "messiah's" consort
Michelle Obama: ‘Building Our Economy Starts With the Restaurants ...’
(CNSNews.com)

Absolutely - since she figures HER income is recession- and depression- proof (but NOT revolution-proof). She is NOT stupid, but she plays one on television. Just a day earlier, her husband said that it is important to hire more teachers so that they can eat at restaurants. Right.

Obama to Hollywood Celebs: ‘You Are the Tie Breaker’
(CNSNews.com)

All right, he's licked their boots again, and they will join in - even if they have to come back from their foreign shooting locations and villas to cast a vote for the First Citizen. I admit that I am terribly excited to find out the real role that these celebs have in our society and economy and politics: I thought that they were just entertaining us!

Racist Wisconsin Killer Gave Online Advice on What to Do Were Herman Cain Elected
(CNSNews.com)

Yes, the man was a serious nutcase, a threat to everyone, and able to do what he did because he was able to buy tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and automatic weapons and cheap, effective high explosives of all types, just because he was "white." Oh, that's NOT what happened? I know: a single "legally purchased" handgun and a fist full of magazines. But reading this article shows that this man is indeed a product of our modern culture: raised in a series of unstable families and with his own living arrangements a series of situations charitably described as "disfunctional." He had an addictive and hate-filled personality, with apparently little more than basic survival skills. This story also reveals that his victims were ALSO a product of modern times: a Sikh community which could boast of nothing better for self-defense than a butter knife? And a police officer apparently so badly trained that he was shot down trying to provide first aid to a victim instead of stopping the killing in progress? Assuming ANY of this is true, it paints an ugly picture. As with Aurora, this should make millions of people go out and arm and train themselves to protect their families, their friends, their congregations and their communities against the evil products of this society - whether self-motivated or weapons of violence produced by wicked conspiracies.

Politics 2012 - Religious hypocrisy
Cardinal Timothy Dolan Will Host Obama at White-Tie Fundraiser for Health Care Causes
(CNSNews.com)

A gross and disgusting mixed message: the "messiah" and his minions have launched a great attack on the Roman Catholic Church (and other religions) in America, and this cardinal hosts him? Who is paying the salary and insurance of the food testers? AND will the Secret Service take away the knives and forks from the diners before the "messiah" stands up to speak, as they did with the Latino elected officials?

Government-run, Tax-funded Schools
NJ School District Offers Bullied Students a Direct Link to Crimestoppers
(CNSNews.com)

Oh, now THAT will do a lot of good, won't it? We can assume that the bullied students will be offered as much protection by the police as the Sikhs got in Wisconsin. Unless it is the bullied students that will be arrested for interfering with the bullies' right to express themselves fully, as seems to be happening in many Muslim-dominated communities in the US.

Stupid government tricks
Sebelius: 36 States Enacted or Amended Anti-Bullying Laws in 2009 and 2010
(CNSNews.com)

The mass lunacy characterized by thinking that "passing a law" can "change the leopard's spots" or repeal natural laws continues to amaze me; this is an example. There have been laws on the books for more than a century that address REAL physical bullying - which are difficult to enforce anyway. These new laws are more in the realm of "thought crimes" - people are violating the laws if they are "mean" -often just in the words they use - and with no physical action or even THREAT of physical action. Students in GRTF schools have been accused of bullying by wearing shirts that have American flags or which promote traditional marriage, or for using common terms and phrases like "that's black and white" or "my mother and father love me" (apparently instead of the politically-correct "my parents love me."). Enforcement is at best sporadic and highly variable, and often directed towards those who are not in conformance with the school's philosophy (the unpublished one). The same things happen on the local and even state level: Like hate crimes, the evil is almost totally subjective. This will create more trouble, indeed.

Theft by government
Feds Give Maryland Town $625,000 to Hire 5 Police Officers
(CNSNews.com)

Nice, really, $125,000 a job: dirt cheap compared to those Solyandra jobs, for instance. Nice profit, too: city pays the newbie cops about $40K and has about $20K in payroll costs and makes them pay for their own training, so a 50% markup for a Beltway town. Sweet!

Mama's Note: Even spending $500. each, that money could have armed more than 6,000 of the people in that town instead. If they'd bought a 9mm HighPoint pistol each, A far better bargain in the long run.

Stupid government tricks
Federal Audit: Women Own Only 10% of Private Companies in Pipeline Industry
(CNSNews.com)

Of course, we must immediately have the FedGov seize at least 40% of the companies and give them to women to balance the playing field. Never mind that private companies in areas of industry like this tend to be owned by working owners who have been doing this sort of work all their lives. And never mind that typical construction companies (of which pipeline construction and maintenance are a part) are often owned on the books by men while being run in reality by their wives. Or the fact that a LOT of us who are "private" companies don't tell the Feds who does or does not own part of our company. No, this evil situation MUST be corrected by Executive Order (we know that there are more men than women in Congress, so Congress can't be trusted to do it).

BUT can ANYone show me ANY where in the US constitution or any state constitution where the government has the power granted to regulate concealed OR open carry?

Egypt’s Ruling Muslim Brotherhood Blames Israel for Attack in Sinai Peninsula

A grand ploy by Israel to create trouble inside Egypt? Based on the information available, and Israel's pre-occupation with Syria and Iran, I don't think so. But with the MB - granddaddy of all modern Islamist movements - in charge of Egypt, expect more like this. This attack is a useful incident to whip up Anti-Israeli fervor among the denizens of Arab Street in Egypt.

Employers Expect 7 Percent Growth in Cost of Health Benefits
(Kaiser Health News)

Forty-three percent of respondents to a survey by the National Business Group on Health said consumer-directed plans are the most effective means employers can use to control health care cost growth...
Only 7 percent? I think if ObummerCare is fully implemented, that the impact will be much worse. Even in the first year. This group is skirting the answer to the problem: not just repeal the Abominable Act, but repeal 80 years of government interference, and reestablish a FREE MARKET. Even on the reservations, that is the long-term solution.

Will Smith on 75% Tax in France: 'God Bless America!'
(CNSNews.com)

...The interviewer then said, “Do you know how much in France you would have to pay on earnings above 1 million euros [French President Francois Hollande's proposal]? Not 30 percent – 75 percent.” At that point, Smith said, “75? Yeah, that's different, that's different. Yeah, 75. Well, you know, God bless America.”
Well, good for him. Not that 50% is anything to boast about, but it is like the team in the basketball tourney that came in 7th in the 8-way contest: at least we're not LAST! Seriously, while Smith is still pretty liberal, he is to the right and up (on the Advocates' Operation Politically Homeless Diamond) to most of his kith and kin in Hollywood. Most of them would WELCOME a 75% tax rate on everyone but themselves (and maybe their current spouses).

Socialism - Water rights
Man Sentenced to 30 Days for Catching Rain Water on Own Property Enters Jail
(CNSNews.com)

As I pointed out in the commentaries when this story first broke, the man (and those writing about) do not understand water law, and the man behaved stupidly - he is in jail NOT because Oregon is suddenly a communist state, but because of his own refusal to face the facts - that especially in the West and regarding water, the states have ALWAYS been socialist (or if you prefer, monarchies: the water belongs to the "king").

Abominable Act
CBO: Obamacare Will Leave 30 Million Uninsured

No solution to the "problem" that demanded the Abominable Act be passed unread. Obummercare is a lose-lose-lost situation (tm).

Mama's Note: Indeed... and having "insurance" does not equal having any health care. The systematic destruction of the entire system over the last 100 or so years is finally becoming so apparent that even socialists think it needs to be "fixed." Of course, the fix they legislate is more of what broke it. Tell me again the definition of "insane."

Gingrich on Sebelius: 'She Is Waging War on The Catholic Church’
(CNSNews.com)

Well, which is better: to pretend to be a Catholic while ignoring its teachings (and behaving like a nutcase seeing ghosts)? or just hate it and use political power to attack it? And is this Sebelius or is she doing it on behalf of her boss, the "messiah?"

Is the world run by sociopaths? Is the world run by sociopaths? Is the world run by sociopaths? Is the world run by sociopaths?
ANY federal agency should be fair game for attack, but Matt Cover (though a good writer) clearly does not understand very much about the NRCS or how it operates or the situation in which it functions. There is a lot to attack NRCS about - especially the way it has been drafted into the war on "manmade global warming." But I am surprised that the ratio of vehicles to employees is not closer to 1:1. Why? Because the NRCS is mostly a field agency: their workers (soil scientists and surveyors and such) are doled out in small county and district offices and spend most of their time in the field gathering data and working with farmers, ranchers, and businesses (not for the most part REGULATING them but giving them information and sharing data) - and they come back to their offices to record and document and draw maps and such. In fact, the fact that they have 2000 more employees than vehicles is an indication that the organization has become too top heavy with state and federal officials (people that don't go into the field often enough to need a dedicated vehicle). The agency has actually dropped in size (losing 600 employees in the last two years, or about 5%) unlike most federal agencies. Yes, it's work could be done by private business or AS a private business far better than it does as a government agency (for one thing, not having to support a massive DC headquarters), and in the future it will be, I am sure. But Matt, attack it for its global warming evil or for its big bloated headquarters or for being part of the federal government - but understand it enough to attack it effectively!

But obviously, Uncle Joe (the "Second Citizen" or "First Minion") is a sore point with the campaign. (But as someone pointed out in a recent Reason story, if it really mattered who the Veep (or Veep candidate) was, the "messiah" would be down by 20 points right now.

As Feed Costs Rise, Livestock Farmers Seek Pause in Ethanol Production
(CNSNews.com)

"Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part." As has always been the case, increased corn prices have always put some farmers (NOT ranchers) who raise livestock in a price squeeze. But that is no reason to put artificial constraints on ethanol production (but it is one MORE reason to stop subsidies by the FedGov).

Mama's Note: Can't remember where just now, but I was reading that the corn crop alone had been expected to be record breaking, and that the drought had reduced the expectations by 3 or 4 percent. If that's true, what is all the bitching and moaning about?

New religions: global warming
Global warming triggers worldwide drought conditions
(Digital Journal)

Climatologists assess global warming has triggered worldwide drought conditions. Farmers have been digging deeper wells as the dead crops, extreme drought and endless wildfires become normal in America and the world.

Mama's Note: Drought has always been normal... in between "normal" floods, of course. They just happen to different parts of the world, and often at the same time.

Nathan: And the truth is, "drought conditions" are NOT worldwide: there are many areas getting their average rainfall, AND there are a LOT of places getting a lot more rainfall than usual. It all balances out. To many people, the impression is that "manmade global warming" is destroying the water, but of course, it is not. We have just as much water on the planet today as we did 100 or 1000 or 5000 years ago.

Mass shooting in Dothan, Alabama nightclub leaves 3 dead
(Digital Journal)

Dothan - In a shooting incident at a Dothan, AL nightclub, three people have died and one is injured. The alleged shooter has been arrested. The suspect, 22-year-old Ryan Clark Peterson of Enterprise, AL was apparently kicked out of the Teaser's strip club, just before midnight on Thursday for "acting inappropriately with one of the employees."He allegedly left the club, and went to his car to get his gun. Investigators say that he then returned to the club and opened fire, killing three people and injuring one more.
Hardly qualifies as a "mass" shooting, of course... but the usual collection of helpless victims is apparent. Rather a surprise in Alabama, actually. Open carry is fairly common there, though I'm not sure about any restrictions in bars... obviously, nobody needs a gun in a bar. (/sarcasm)

Politics 2012 (Washington Post - Mainstream Media)
The next several stories show the ratio of attacks on the GOP candidate versus that on the "messiah" and how they claim their attacks are working.

Three polls show Obama widening lead over Romney
(Washington Post)

A bumpy overseas trip and a month of pummeling by Democratic ads depicting Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch plutocrat and possible tax evader appear to have taken a toll. Three polls released in the last 24 hours show President Obama widening his lead over the former Massachusetts governor to as much as nine points. The surveys of registered voters, all conducted sometime between Aug. 2 and 8, also have Romney’s unfavorable ratings headed north. Two of the polls show his support among independents slipping.
Nothing like reinforcing the messages of the Demo campaign ads - see, even the newspapers in articles "favorable" to him say he is all these things.

Romney aide Fehrnstrom calls Obama campaign lower than a ‘champion limbo dancer’
(Washington Post)

BOSTON — One of Mitt Romney’s top campaign advisers lashed out at President Obama’s reelection campaign for what he called “ugly distortions and lies” that he said were tarring the office of the presidency.
This story gives you the idea that the aide is wrong to "lash out" against the opposing campaign. Of course, ANYone who dares to challenge the "messia" is evil.

What Romney’s run with the Big Dig tells us about how he’d manage America
(Washington Post)

Mitt Romney was used to summoning state officials and having them appear. So when the head of a troubled agency stood him up in the middle of an emergency, the Massachusetts governor was furious. A tunnel ceiling collapse in July 2006 had killed a mother of three, the latest crisis for the massive Boston construction project known as the “Big Dig.” But Matthew Amorello, the official overseeing construction, had ignored Romney’s summons and instead held a televised news conference at the accident site.
The Big Dig is enshrined in the popular memory as a huge porkbarrel project that was a complete fiasco. Of course the WaPo knows that, so they can use it to again smear the man - not that ALL of Mass's government doesn't deserve to be castigated for the boondoggle.

President Obama’s claim that insurance premiums ‘will go down’

“The other thing we’ve done is to say, what are the critical needs of small business? A lot of time, one of the biggest challenges is to make sure that you, as a sole proprietor, that you can get health insurance for you and your family. So when you hear about the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — and I don’t mind the name because I really do care. That’s why we passed it. You should know that once we have fully implemented, you’re going to be able to buy insurance through a pool so that you can get the same good rates as a group that if you’re an employee at a big company you can get right now — which means your premiums will go down.”
Apparently, the WaPo felt it necessary this Saturday after slamming the GOP candidate four times, to at least tap the "messiah" once.

Mama's Note: This whole campaign is sort of like listening to a bunch of black folks call each other the "n" word. Ho hum.

Romney campaign confirms Paul Ryan as running mate
(Reuters VIA Freedom's Phoenix)

"Mitt's choice for VP is Paul Ryan. Spread the word about America's comeback team," a Romney campaign app said, confirming widespread reports he had selected the 42-year-old Wisconsin lawmaker who chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee. Romney was expected to introduce Ryan at the retired battleship USS Wisconsin - coincidentally named for Ryan's home state - in Norfolk, Virginia, at about 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT) Saturday, a Republican official who asked not to be identified said late Friday.

This would seem to dash the final hopes of the Paulistas - both Pauls are in essence shut out of the convention. And Reason Magazine called it right: that Ryan DOES make a logical (if not good) choice for the GOP candidate-designate. Although Ryan's proposed budget solution is a failure and an example of cowardice and refusal to face facts, and will NOT revive the now-defunct Republic (or the rapidly-decaying economy), his proposals were better than anything anyone with even a modicum of power made. Of course, as Veep, he'd have NO power - he doesn't strike me as a Cheney type.

It apparently was a matter of a few hours before their opponents came out with an attack ad on Ryan, condemning him as evil incarnate and apparently someone who not just pushes old women in wheelchairs over cliffs, but eats babies WITHOUT SALT!
