Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2012
Posted April 09, 2012

This week, I seem to be more sarcastic than normal - keep that in mind as you read. And I definitely am more prone to call a lie a lie. And we have a LOT of them, from both big political parties and politicians around the globe, as well as activists at home and abroad.

The Nanny State - Lies and more lies
Cellphone driving not dangerous
(Jewish World Review)

A bill pending in Illinois' capital would ban all drivers from using hand-held cellphones in the state. An ordinance being considered in Evanston would go further and prohibit motorists in that town from talking on cellphones of any kind — including hands-free. It's a matter of safety, proponents of both measures say. But two decades of research done in the U.S. and abroad have not yielded conclusive data about the impact cellphones have on driving safety, it appears. Nor is there a consensus that hands-free devices make for safer driving than hand-held cellphones.

I just LOVE the nanny state: ANY excuse to exercise more control, and never mind the facts. Of course, this has been the case for a long time: JPFO reminded us that in the decade before the passage of the evil 1968 gun control act (passed “in response” to growing crime), homicides had been DROPPING – and AFTER that act was in effect, homicides climbed for more than 20 years (before starting to drop, perhaps in response to growing concealed-carry and gun ownership). This is NOT about safety – this is about control. Free communications, like freedom to bear arms and many other liberties, are a MAJOR way to defend those very liberties against tyranny. The only reason our tyranny is not so impressive as it could be is that technology – the internet, cellular phones, more efficient production of weapons and ammunition, better private transportation, alternative methods of payment, radar/laser detectors, and such things – have to some degree nullified massive increases in government regulations and nanny-state tactics.

Nazgul-in-chief - the Nanny State
Supreme Court upholds jail strip searches, including for minor offenses
(Washington Post)

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that those arrested for even minor violations may be strip-searched before being admitted to jail, saying safety concerns outweigh personal privacy rights. The court’s conservatives ruled against a New Jersey man who was strip-searched after being mistakenly arrested on an outstanding warrant.

This makes sick, warped sense for the Nanny State – because the real issue is that TOO MANY PEOPLE are being arrested and thrown into jail – even for short periods of time (hours) when there is NO JUSTIFICATION for doing so. In particular, this idea of NOT verifying “outstanding warrants” in this day of pervasive ID card use is nothing but a cop-out by the police and jail systems. This make-work is NOT restricted to the police alone: one local fire district (now served by a mixture of full-time and volunteer personnel) is trying to get a massive tax-increase/bond issue passed to allow more full-time personnel to be hired. Their primary justification is that fire service responses have quadrupled in the past few years – failing (of course) to point out that the REASON for the fourfold increase is that the board and officers made the decision to have a fire vehicle and crew respond to EVERY call for medical assistance and EVERY traffic accident in the district – supposedly for life safety.

Mama's Note: The automatic strip search, of course, goes right along with the police state mantra that everyone is a criminal... and some just have not been caught yet. Everyone is guilty until proven innocent... and even that is diminishing rapidly. Guilty until incarcerated or executed is more like it.

Theft by government
Government Spending and Private Activity

On balance, government spending does not appear to stimulate private activity...

Oh, really? Can't imagine how someone would come up with a hokey idea like that. One MORE proof that theft by government is bad in multiple ways.

Mama's Note: But knowing that, of course, won't even slow them down.

Congress in action - Theft by government
The Cliff's Notes Version of Republican Health Reform

Under Representative Paul Ryan's budget plan, Medicare beneficiaries would be given a subsidy for the purchase of private plans, rather than having unlimited services provided to them directly...

Is this a fix? Maybe a partial one. Deregulation, ending of taxes and mandates, and similar measures - anathema even to truly conservative Republicans - are also necessary. It may not be possible to phase things in, at all.

It costs the Canadian government 1.6 cents to produce one penny...

Sounds like they ought to be making tuppence coins, eh? But no, the modern nation state can't have a REAL intrinsic-value coin circulating, or anything like that which makes sense. And of course, getting rid of the penny just encourages inflation.

Like the United States, [UK] Wrestles With Health Care
(NPR )

The National Health Service currently costs the United Kingdom more than $158 billion a year...

Yeah, I know this is NPR (who thinks that the UK is Europe] but the numbers are very interesting. Everyone "says" that American ObummerCare wouldn't have any of the flaws of the NHS in the UK - and you can take that with a grain of salt. But there are about 70 million in the UK versus 300 million in the US: so an NHS system could easily cost the US 4 times as much: $680 billion a year. Makes the current CBO estimates look puny, eh?

Europe's fall - Africa's collapse
Angola continues to line its nest

Spurred by the economic crisis, Angolans are eagerly buying up Portuguese firms, acquiring a wide range of businesses including banks, oil companies, media outlets and telecom operators. The trend is in part due to the lack of funds on one side and the abundance of cash on the other, but that is not the only explanation.

Neat, eh? The Angolans are following the example of the US - remember when the folks in Arizona bought London Bridge? And consider all of the Brit firms that Americans own. Of course, despite Angola's socialism - and outright communism in the past, I suspect that Portugal, like the rest of the EU, has trashed its economy and pretty much wrecked its own entrepreneurial class. Heaven forbid that people should exploit others by making money! As the next story says we are expecting to be done here.

Then let HIM redistribute his own wealth! Of course, he is misquoting and twisting scripture, using the words of an accused murderer who tried to lie his way out of being found responsible for his act. And he foolishly mistakes FORCED "giving" for the truly Godly voluntary giving - as is typical of even "conservative" statists.

Ron Paul: ‘I Haven’t Decided’ Whether to Support Romney If He’s the GOP Nominee

I wonder if he hasn't already pretty much decided, but figures it is best to not do it right now? Certainly, he needs to keep focused: many people are wondering just what he and Gingrich will do to bust open the Convention, and how great the impact will be. The mere fact that news sources like CNSNews.com are still talking about him is a major victory in itself. And Lew Rockwell pointed out  that in some very important ways, Paul's victory is assured: not in primaries or general elections but in the future. The question is whether it will be an American future or something else.

Mama's Note: I've got to say that the idea Paul might even consider such a thing is shocking. I'm certainly no fan of any politician, but always did have respect for Ron Paul. If he gives support to ANY of the candidates, I'm finished with him completely.

EPA: 'Ask If You Can Work From Home' to Save Energy

Let's see how many EPA staffers - especially those at GS-13 and above - are going to "work from home" and demonstrate all these wonderful green values that they preach for the masses. And let us see how many convenience store clerks and plumbers and heavy equipment operators can sign on to this effort. Civilization was not built by "saving energy" and "conservation" is NOT a mark of progress. I dare say that Europe in AD 700 (the Dark Ages) used a LOT less energy than Europe in, say AD 200 in the full bloom of the Roman Empire and civilization did. If we can collapse Euro-American Civilization, I bet our energy consumption will REALLY drop.

What DID Assad do after all these years to get her on his case? And you wonder just WHO is paying for those arms flooding into Syria right now, as she piously refrains from giving the rebels arms.

Nice turn of phrase, nice challenge to Romney. Be nicer if it were true: Santorum's record is BARELY socially-conservative; when you look at what he has supported over the years, there is no fiscal conservativism at all. Indeed, George W Bush and his father both appear more conservative.

Given their union's current health plans, I don't blame them. But they are nothing more than rats jumping off a sinking ship.

Mama's Note: Gosh, I didn't know the USPS was an insurance company. I thought they were supposed to deliver the mail. All smoke and mirrors, folks. They've got a gold plated deal that costs them zero. No chance at all they're going to allow that to be taken away from them.

Gingrich Proposes ‘Personal Social Security Savings Account’ in Georgetown Speech

Wow - how many years too late? Of course, if he HAD really advocated dismembering much of the FedGov and things like this in the past six months (to say nothing of the past two or three years or decades) he might be closer to a victory now. Actually and sadly, this is what the FDR administration had promised, back 80 years ago - and lied about. So we have a "conservative" politician advocating today what a "progressive" leftwing type had promised way back when.

Pro-Abortion Activists Help Students Hand Out Condoms at Catholic U; ‘God’s Will’

Otto also implied that the work the student group is doing is in keeping with “God’s Will.” “We have learned from Catholic teachings the importance of caring for others and carrying out God’s Will,” Otto said. “And in that mindset, we will continue our mission to promote sexual health and responsibility in our university community in the hopes that our university will end their war on women.”

Well, good for them: at least they are not killing babies. But this reminds me of the old college bawdy ballad about the family who ensured that their businesses prospered: one sold shoddy condoms, another ran an abortion clinic, and the third a child-care center for unwed mothers. All were interested in profiting from corrupting people, just as these Pro-Abortion Activists have demonstrated for years and years. You have to wonder just WHY Ms. Otto and her ilk are even attending a Catholic university, with this kind of opinion and attitude.

1940 Census Records, Released Monday, Include Info on 21 Million Living People

This is the classic example of a battle that doesn't need to be fought. So what if some of those about whom information is provided are still living? Look in a phone book lately? MOST of those people in that phone book (with names and numbers) are - GASP - STILL ALIVE. (Or they are pretending to be). This is such a sick example of how we major in minors and forget about REAL threats to our privacy and liberty like the USA PATRIOT Act, the Abominable Act, and dozens of illegal and immoral executive orders, policy "interpretations" and the like, while our "privacy" is supposedly being threatened by data that is over 70 years old. Meanwhile, we continue to see that the Constitution is a dead letter, as the next story (actually, commentary) discusses:

Nazgul-in-chief - Abominable Act
judicial review
(Conservative Reaction Alerts)

However, when the delegates of the thirteen original States drafted the Constitution they decided after much debate not to delegate such a power to the judicial branch or any other branch of the new Federal Government. If the Constitution doesn’t give this power to the Court how did they get it? The surprising answer is that they assumed it unto themselves, and since no one stopped them they just kept doing it. The process began in 1794 when for the First time they declared an act of Congress unconstitutional. Then in 1803 they used a minor case Marbury v Madison to outline their justification for the process. Since that time the belief that the Supreme Court is the ultimate judge of the constitutionality of anything and everything has become such a cornerstone of the American System that the average person erroneously believes the power was granted in the Constitution. Thus the first power grab has become our last defense against what could be the final power grab. In other words we who want to see the rebirth of limited government are hoping the Supreme Court will use an unconstitutional power to save the Constitution. We stand hat in hand waiting patiently to find out if the Commerce Clause can be stretched to give the central government unlimited power or will we step back from the precipice and wait for the Party of Power to try again.

Dr. Robert Owens has much to say that is good - but balance his words against that of Boston T. Party's Hologram of Liberty.
Civic Belief #1: The Congress was given few specific powers. All else was left to the States and to the people under the 10th Amendment. Ample checks and balances protect the Republic from federal tyranny.

Civic Belief #2: The Federal Government has become so powerful only because despotic officials have overstepped their strict, constitutional bounds.

If #1 is true, then how did #2 happen?

The coup of the Supreme Court in 1794 was very likely planned from the beginning, and has led to untold human misery and loss of freedom. Today, it is one of the foundations of our tyrannical servitude. Even so, dealing with things as they are and NOT as they should be, theoretically the Nazgul could “save” the corpse of the Republic from this further desecration (the Abominable Act) by finding the whole 2700 pages unconstitutional. Which would, of course, mean that the various provisions would continue to be implemented by executive fiat.

President Assails GOP Rivals, Accuses Rep. Paul Ryan of ‘Social Darwinism’

Yet another example of the pot calling the kettle black. Admittedly, the First Citizen's advocacy and use of "social darwinism" is a bit disguised, but far more complete than the GOP's is, at least on the surface. But the truth is, in many MANY ways, the entire "modern" idea of statism and government IS just a form of social darwinism: might makes right.

Obama Warns ‘Unelected’ Supremes: Overturning My Law Would be ‘Judicial Activism’

"Ultimately, I am confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress."

This sounds like pure ignorance (and was called so by many) but I don't think it is that. It appears to be baiting and distracting, just as Iran and North Korea have done for years. He gets a lot MORE mention in the talk shows, and he is derided but that acts, paradoxically, to glue his supporters, both core and fringe, to him more tightly. And he obviously knows that what he is saying is a lie, just as Jones does in the next article.

Mama's Note: Anyone who has been paying the least attention knows that Obama has run roughshod over the Congress again and again in the last four years. The fact that the Congress has done nothing at all to stop that only shows anyone who cares that they are both the enemy of liberty and justice.

In this, of course, he stands in line with many conservatives, who demonstrate their incredible dislike for libertarians and fellow-travelers in a variety of ways. Michael Medved, for one, comes to mind: I'd not be surprised if he didn't chime in to support Jones, because his vitriol against libertarians is so acidic. But looking at his actual speech, I am baffled. This is so bizarre that you wonder just WHO he is attacking: it surely isn't the LPUS... This reminds me so much of what Big Brother required of all the wonderful people of Oceania each day.

Concealed-carry saves church from shotgun intruder,
(CBS News)

A South Carolina sheriff is praising a man with a concealed weapons permit who helped disarm someone who kicked in the door of a church armed with a shotgun. ... Jesse Gates had already been to the Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Boiling Springs once Sunday morning, so the pastor’s grandson was keeping his eye on the parking lot when he saw Gates come back, this time taking a shotgun out of his trunk, Wright said. “They locked the door and they were calling 911 at the time. He didn’t draw his weapon or make any move or action toward this gentleman until he kicked the door open and forced the issue,” Wright said. After Gates kicked in the door, the pistol pointed at him distracted him enough that the pastor was able to grab the shotgun. Members of the church kept him down until deputies arrived, Wright said.

No shots fired. How many times a DAY does this happen and never show up in news? This probably would not have been talked about outside Spartanburg County if not for the Sheriff there telling all the women in the county they should get a CCW some months ago. These Baptists didn't depend on the secular authorities to protect them. People, getting killed for Jesus' sake does NOT include being blown away because somebody decides to off their ex-wife or former girl-friend, or rob everyone in the meeting house or some stupid reason like that. Michelle to kids: parents and grandparents, “wrong people,” must be told to vote Obama
(American Vision) (PJMedia)

The first lady tried to enlist “Families for Obama” at an event with tickets starting at $500 a pop at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Friday. The pool reporter estimated that there were a couple dozen kids in the audience of about 350, and Michelle Obama spent much of her speech talking to them. “I mean, I can’t tell you in the last election how many grandparents I ran into who said, I wasn’t going to vote for Barack Obama until my grandson talked to me, until my great-grandson talked to me, and talked about the future he wanted for this country,” she said. "And let’s not forget how my husband appointed those two brilliant Supreme Court justices. . . . And we are now feeling the impact of those court decisions and what effect that will have on our children’s lives for decades to come — on their privacy and security, on whether they can speak freely, worship openly, and, yes, love whomever they choose.”

Anyone who lets their grandchildren or great-grandchildren decide whom or what to vote for is EXACTLY the kind of stupid voter that got us into this mess and whom the First Woman and her husband used to get elected in the first place. This sort of comment is the kind of insult we've come to expect from her, and from liberals in general: that pre-teens and teens have some mystical wisdom that their elders must accept and follow. But I want to concentrate on her last comments about our children's lives with the Nazguli-in-chief's decisions:

(1) Privacy: None, at least not from the State, with surveillance cameras, monitoring of electronic communications, drone surveillance, satellite surveillance, government-controlled health records, etc.
(2) Security: None, with government goons able to break and enter at will, no secure borders, disarmed totally or in many locations, and with taxes taking more and more of people's income.
(3) Speak freely: Unless you say something bad about politicians, liberals, Muslims, homosexuals, someone of a different color or ethnicity than yours; want to talk about (or to) God in public; want to publish (or read or listen to) something you didn't buy directly from the creator or their court-recognized agent; or say something against evolution, global warming, or the benevolence of our beloved governments. Or say something "offensive" to some protected group.
(4) Worship openly: but only if what you want to worship openly is sex, Allah, Gaia (the Earth), science, or government: all other, stay inside your buildings (can't meet in your homes or businesses without permits and licenses) and we don't want to hear you or see you.
(5) Love whomever they choose: boys, girls, animals, multiple of whatever flavor; you name it - and whether or not you entered into a contract of marriage which the government can declare void or at least of no effect at any time it chooses. Except of course that you can't love your children if the government sees fit to steal them from you and put them in an institution, whether that is four or six hours a day or permanently.

Oh, yes, this woman is seeing our future - if we continue the path we are on, and the Good Lord does NOT give us what we so richly deserve as a nation. Fortunately, He generally deals with each of us individually.

Appeals Court assigns Obama homework on Constitutional theory: 3-page paper
(CBS News)

In the escalating battle between the administration and the judiciary, a federal appeals court apparently is calling the president’s bluff — ordering the Justice Department to answer by Thursday whether the Obama Administration believes that the courts have the right to strike down a federal law, according to a lawyer who was in the courtroom. The order, by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, appears to be in direct response to the president’s comments yesterday about the Supreme Court’s review of the health care law. Mr. Obama all but threw down the gauntlet with the justices, saying he was “confident” the Court would not “take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.” . . .

This is funny - even if I don't have a dog in the fight. And if the First Citizen has ticked off THIS panel, has he also ticked off the Nazguli-in-chief? See comments later in the week about the response of the DOJ to this, and the way the Mainstream Media reported it.

Sebelius: Youth Violence Leads to Asthma and Obesity

“Violence is also a chronic health issue.” “It leads to asthma, it leads to obesity or depression among the youth who are involved,” Sebelius said at the event in Washington, D.C. “It’s an economic issue," Sebelius went on to say.

You can’t make this stuff up – or rather, you don’t HAVE to make this stuff up, because people like Sebelius do it FOR us. The comments on this are a hoot: “Does she use Jay Leno’s writers?” “Is she competing with Babs Boxer for title of Stupidest Woman in DC?” She just makes the bald statement with no support. My family and I had fun trying to figure out exactly HOW it leads to asthma and obesity: we figure “depression” is a given – especially considering that kids are already depressed after spending 180 days a year in GRTF schools. Do they figure that kids hide down in the basement playing video games and eating Doritos and drinking Game Fuel – and getting fat – because they are afraid to go outside and get beat up? Or perhaps they get asthma because they are running for their lives in heavily-polluted urban areas?

Mama's Note: Children today get much more than fat and asthmatic. They become sick and violent because most of them do not have rational, independent adult parents and communities to guide them as they grow, and are prevented from having meaningful work and play experiences while young enough to learn healthy habits from them.

I think this is insulting to those wonderful government workers who tirelessly protect us against the dangers of bad spinach – both fresh and frozen. But the real issue behind his rhetoric is that bad spinach (despite the best efforts of the FDA and other government nanny agencies) is rare, while black-on-black killings are as common as dogs biting people: a sad state of affairs and one for which blame can be placed on about fifty years of government policy destroying families and society.

To a certain degree, he is RIGHT – the Nazguli do not have a good record on controlling the growth of government tyranny, do they? But again, in context, this is an incredibly off-the-wall statement, and he certainly knows he is lying through his teeth: he even claims that this attempt (which he blames on the GOP) makes the GOP 1994 Contract with America look like the New Deal, so he KNOWS enough history to recall that the Nazguli originally determined a LOT of the New Deal was unconstitutional. (Before FDR bullied them.) So, what is his game? Is he trying his own bullying? Or is he just trying to see how much trouble he can drive his own campaign into?

Americans Must Work Until April 17 This Year Just to Pay for Government

This year, government will tax away 29.2 percent of the nation’s total income. That means Americans must work from Jan. 1 until April 17 just to produce the income the government will take away. If the federal government taxed Americans enough to cover the projected $1.014 trillion in deficit spending it will do this year, the Tax Foundation says, Americans would need to work until May 14 to cover the total tax bill. This year’s April 17 Tax Freedom Day falls seven days later than Tax Freedom Day in 2009, the year President Barack Obama took office.

Directly pay, yes: indirectly? Sometime in July, I suspect. Or later. If you start figuring in the intangible (lost opportunity) costs, we are still farther behind.

Int’l Criminal Court Decision on ‘Palestine’ Is a Victory for Israel and a Defeat for Amnesty International

It is hard to see this as a pro-Israel victory, even though a defeat for Amnesty International is something to be happy about. Its original noble purpose has long been corrupted into such a situation that anything good from AI is almost an accident. The circumstances point out that the "Palestinian Authority" is even MORE of a criminal gang willing to sell out the liberties of "their" people even more than the usual gangs we call governments.

Geithner: U.S. Fiscal Situation 'Unsustainable'--But We Can't 'Just Cut Things'

Why not? My family and my business have to do it - as do almost all families (even the ones on welfare) and most businesses (except for a favored few who are government welfare types). Geithner reflects the incredible hubris and stupidity of his boss.

Mama's Note: And that's not even the real question... when the source of the funds is theft, only a complete shut down of all operations is truly "sustainable." Without the possibility of theft, people will quickly find honest ways to get the things done that truly need to be done.

Minnesota: Cops steal waitress's tip
(ABC News)

"Stacy Knutson, a struggling Minnesota waitress and mother of five, says she was searching for a 'miracle' to help her family with financial problems. But that 'miracle' quickly came and went after police seized a $12,000 tip that was left at her table. Knutson filed a lawsuit in Clay County District Court stating that the money is rightfully hers. Police argue it is drug money." (04/05/12)

I was pleased to hear the coverage this bald theft got - and how much it was the cops that got condemned for their actions.

Mama's Note: Latest news is that the cops gave the money back to her - probably because of all the negative publicity. She needs to watch her back, I'm thinking. Wouldn't surprise me if they figure out a way to steal it from her again. I'd sure like to know the story of the person who gave it to her...

Hello! It is a start. First China, then Japan and then Canada and then the US, right? GAO: Federal Spending Driving ‘Unsustainable’ Debt

Seems to me if the debt is "unsustainable" that Geithner might possibly draw the conclusion that the SPENDING might also be unsustainable? One might be forgiven for thinking that this administration's goal is to not only drive the US deeper into bankruptcy but also to ensure that recovery is impossible.

Mama's Note: Recovery is never "impossible." The mother of all defaults is inevitable, and those who loaned their wealth to this deadbeat government will simply have to take it on the chin. Yes, that includes a lot of us seniors. What will be, will be. Those who have prepared will survive.

Illegal Aliens Find Detention in U.S. May Be Good for Their Health

Considering living conditions in places like Panama, Honduras, and most of Mexico, it is easy to understand how a clean, dry, and warm place to sleep, a reasonable amount of healthy food, medical care, clean water easily obtained, and even places to exercise safely and NOT have to do backbreaking labor to make a living might be good for them. For centuries, people have been coming to America in hopes of improving their lives, and it is no surprise that even American jails and detention centers are better than normal life in much of the rest of the world: been that way for a couple of centuries, at least. It makes you wonder if all those scenes of old British and German and Soviet detention and concentration camps might not be what American large-scale detention camps turn to be?

Obama: ‘Google, Facebook Would Not Exist’ Without Government Funding

As with the weather forecasts and job statistics, we again find the First Citizen as drama queen and exaggerator-in-chief on this one. At best, government funding offsets a small part of the damage caused by government as a parasite on the economy. Indeed, as people like L. Congress finally agrees on something. Since no Democrat was willing to submit President Barack Obama's latest budget to the House, Representative Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) decided to do it for them. He sponsored an alternative budget proposal based on Obama's budget plan. What happened? Not a single legislator voted for it! That's right, no one on either side of the aisle would say "aye." Freedom Friday: Virginia's vaccine mandate gets new life
(Douglas Report)

Parents have spoken loud and clear: They don't want dangerous HPV vaccinations forced on their daughters. Even the most ardent pro-vaccine moms and dads have been refusing Merck's Gardasil shot, and I say good for them. But politicians are too dazzled by Big Pharma money to get the message. Just look at Virginia, home to eight U.S. presidents along with a notorious mandate that requires all girls between the ages of 11 and 12 get the expensive three-shot Gardasil sequence. (Sure, there's an opt-out clause. But you know how that works. Parents who exercise their right to opt out are treated like lepers.) Last month, lawmakers in Virginia managed to kill a proposed repeal of the mandate without actually voting on it -- allowing these chickens to please their Big Pharma masters without having to go on the record as voting for or against a vaccine mandate.

Washington, Jefferson, and Madison would be so proud! Don't breathe a sigh of relief if you're not in Virginia. Big Pharma is hard at work trying to convince local, state, and federal officials to back HPV shots -- and they're getting big-time results. Under a recent law in California, for example, docs can give the shot to girls as young as 12 without parental consent or even their knowledge. On the federal level, the CDC recently extended its Gardasil recommendations to include boys as well as girls -- a move I'm sure is completely unrelated to the fact that the former head of the agency is now the head of vaccines at Merck. Riiiiiiiight. Here's the reality: This shot offers little to girls and even less for boys. Often wrongly called "the cervical cancer vaccine," it really protects against only some of the strains of HPV that cause the disease. In boys, it might cut the risk of extremely rare anal cancers -- cancers so rare almost no one gets them anyway. Now, I'd be the first to admit this shot would be worthwhile if it managed to save even a few lives without ruining any in the process -- but of course that's not the case.Gardasil has been linked to thousands of adverse events, including paralysis, seizures, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, and even dozens of deaths. Worth it? Not on your life -- and not on the lives of your children and grandchildren.

This is a lengthy extract from an opinion piece that has a lot in it. I can't pretend to be able to sort out the raging argument over whether Gardisil is helpful, deadly, or mixed - but I DO believe that government has no business telling parents, children, OR adults that they MUST take it. And that there is strong evidence that there is yet ANOTHER unholy alliance between a certain industrial corporation (or corporations) and multiple government agencies that are spewing propaganda. Except for the (fortunately RARE) exception of women who are raped, there IS a way to ensure that you cannot get genital warts and cervical cancer or HPV if they ARE sexually-transmitted diseases: the same way you avoid pregnancy or syphilis or such: you DON'T HAVE SEX. There are MILLIONS of men and women - ADULT men and women - who have not and do not have sex and they are all a bunch of psychopathic nutcases who are warped and evil and go out and kill people by the millions and wreck society - NOT! And very close to that are people who have SEX with just ONE person who has never had sex with anyone else. That is called FIDELITY in marriage. For government to demand that parents vaccinate children - not just using a drug about which there are serious concerns, but ANY drug - or worse, and LIE to or IGNORE their parents, is insanely evil and is initiating violence against the child, the parent, and the society as a whole. Government uses fear - fear of diseases that are NOT as serious a problem as they are made out to be, fear of punishment, fear of being hounded and marked and humiliated, to increase its power and further damage society. The difference between this sort of mandate and the Abominable Act is one only of degree.

USDA Choice: 326,000 rounds of ammo?
(Pakalert Press)

After Homeland Security’s recent order to 450 million rounds of ammunition got plenty of alternative news coverage in the last couple of weeks, it now comes out that other government agencies have placed massive orders for bullets as well. But why in the world does the USDA need 326,000 bullets? And in several calibers, for both rifle and handgun? Are meat inspections that dangerous? Or are they targeting a different herd?

Actually, and NOT supporting the idea that the USDA needs to be or SHOULD be armed, the writer of this article did not bother to do ANY research or even understand common information regarding USDA. Like virtually EVERY other cabinet-level agency the USDA has numerous agencies under it which DO contain ARMED (and often ARMORED) "police forces" and "law enforcement" agents that are armed against criminals, citizens in general, and their own employees. In the USDA, this includes many rangers of the US Forest Service, which controls 193 MILLION acres (301,600 square miles: 3,000 times the size of DC, and equal to almost half of South Dakota). Many USDA facilities (especially research laboratories and the like) have armed security guards, although GSA does provide such at many locations. (Thanks to Joel for this one.)

Mama's Note: Only 326,000 "bullets?" I wonder if they got the rest of the components as well. The bullets alone won't do them much good, however much better it would be for the rest of us. Too bad these "journalists" don't verify and use the proper terms.

Arab Spring coming to US?
(Washington Examiner)

An Egypt-styled “Arab Spring,” which has put radicals in charge of the government, will be launched in the United States this spring with a war on “corporate power, Wall Street greed and the political corruption of the 1 percent,” according to the group headed by former Obama green aide Van Jones. “They’re really not going to like the 99 percent Spring,” said Rebuild the Dream in an organizing email Friday.

We know the results of Arab Spring elsewhere, with more trampling of liberty and less freedom; Jones no doubt expects the same thing here. How prepared are you for a Libyan or Syrian style collapse?

Michigan: Detroit woman defends her home,
(Detroit News)

A 38-year-old woman who was confronted Thursday by an armed burglar inside her northwest Detroit home grabbed her own gun and killed the intruder, police said.... “The victim was inside her home when she heard someone break in,” Stephens said. “She observed that the suspect was armed; she was armed herself, and fired shots, fatally wounding the 19-year-old suspect.” The incident is the second in two weeks involving a homeowner who fatally shot an intruder. Last week, 75-year-old Willie White shot and killed an 18-year-old man who broke into the side door of his home, also in northwest Detroit. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy investigated the shooting and determined it was justified.

Pretty standard, but a reminder that brawn and no brains are overcome by brains and a steady shooting hand - and weight and size don't matter (at least not HUMAN weight - but don't try this with a .22-cal!).

Mama's Note: If a .22 is all you've got... definitely go ahead and use it to defend yourself. Some people live in areas where even that would be a blessing... and some where it would be seriously "illegal." Then again, I can never understand why anyone would want to live in such a place.
