Libertarian
Commentary on The News
April 19, 2010By Nathan A. Barton © 2010 Monday Politics 2010 Survey:
Troops shift political allegiance
Navy Times “Political party affiliation has fallen sharply among those wearing the uniform today, a new Military Times survey shows. An exclusive survey of some 1,800 active-duty troops shows the percentage of self-identified Republicans has decreased by one-third since 2004, from 60 percent to 41 percent, while the percentage of self-identified independents has nearly doubled to 32 percent during the same period. These career-oriented officers and mid-grade and senior enlisted members are still far more conservative than liberal, but they are less likely today to identify with the GOP, the survey shows. Much of the shift appears to have occurred only very recently, with the percentage of troops identifying themselves as Republican dropping nine percentage points from 2008 to 2009 and the percentage of those calling themselves independents increasing 10 points over the same period.” (04/12/10) As the Times Publishing Group knows, political affiliation does NOT equal political allegiance, and it is normal for registrations and self-identifications to shift when administrations change. Especially an administration as corrupt and vile and this one is to the ethics and morals of so many soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. They know that they are likely to be impacted by being "Republicans," given what is happening, but can't stomach identifying themselves as "Democrats." And the GOP has been less than popular for its perceived failure to fight on a lot of issues. "Independent" is a good safe place for this four year period. Abominable Act - State fighting TN:
Senate debates fed health mandates
Tennessean “Tennessee lawmakers against a resolution that opposes federally mandated health care initiatives said Monday it’s unnecessary because of the recent passage of President Barack Obama’s reform legislation. The resolution proposed by Republican Rep. Susan Lynn of Mt. Juliet was passionately debated for more than an hour before it passed 66-29. The proposal ‘expresses opposition to … the creation of a federal health insurance exchange or connector, and the creation of a federal health insurance plan (public plan) option.’ Several lawmakers questioned the timeliness of the measure following the recent passage of the federal healthcare bill.” (04/12/10) I guess we can figure that the TN lawmakers opposed to this are fine with licking the First Citizen's boots as a full-time occupation. Whether this passes or not, you can be sure that TN is on the First Citizen's enemies list when this is added to everything else TN is doing. An armed society is... FL: Homeowner catches teen burglar
WFTV “Daven Woulard was coming home from the store and, from the street, his wife who was with him in the car saw two legs sticking out of a window. It’s the window to their son’s bedroom. Woulard was not about to let anyone break into his home. He pulled into his driveway in a hurry, jumped out of the car and grabbed his .44-magnum handgun, which he has a permit to carry. Woulard told the young boy to get out of the house and, when he didn’t react right away, fired a shot into the ground. That made the 16-year-old move a little quicker. At that point, the teen did everything Woulard told him to do, holding still until the police got there. Woulard said it was a one in a million chance to catch someone in the act like that, but it’s exactly why he carries a gun.” (04/12/10) This is definitely NOT self-defense, but I do believe that it is legitimate use of a firearm for good purposes: preventing crime with a minimum risk to the ordinary citizen. This is one young man that hopefully now knows to obey his elders and "hosts" however unwilling they might fill that role; can we hope that he has been scared back to the straight and narrow? An armed society is... MI: Good Samaritan
stops bank robber
MyFox Detroit “At 10:00 a.m. Monday, a man is accused of passing a note to a teller at the National City Bank on Woodward, and then grabbing the cash and running out the door. Good Samaritan Michael Farrow saw him running down the street and decided to get involved. Farrow has a CCW and was carrying a gun when he told the man to stop and get down. ‘He actually thought I was a police officer at the time,’ he said. Police arrived seconds later, taking 49-year-old Robert Lee Chandler into custody. He is a parolee, who police say has an extensive criminal history. The suspect will face charges.” (04/08/10) Once more, we see a legitimate use that is NOT self-defense. Mr. Farrow did not have to do anything to protect himself, but he WAS protecting his community from crime and a criminal. Mama's Note: Impossible to tell from the media report, but I wonder how Mr. Farrow knew the man he stopped had robbed a bank. Did he draw the gun? Not saying he should not have gotten involved, but I would caution anyone to be very sure of the situation before doing something like this. A mistake could cost you a great deal of time and money. An armed society is... Iran to complain to
UN over Obama’s nuclear threat
Reuters “Iran will lodge a complaint with the United Nations about what it sees as U.S. President Barack Obama’s threat to attack it with nuclear weapons, the foreign ministry said on Sunday. Obama made clear last week that Iran and North Korea were excluded from new limits on the use of U.S. atomic weapons — something Tehran interpreted as a threat from a long-standing adversary to attack it with nuclear bombs.” (04/11/10) So, let me see. I live in a neighborhood with a couple of dozen neighbors, most of whom are good folks, but a couple of which are thugs and felons that are constantly threatening me, threatening other neighbors, and have made it clear that they if I announce to all my neighbors that I won't exercise my right of self-defense by immediately shooting any of my neighbors who trespass, except that I won't promise not to shoot those two guys that are always threatening me. RIght? So now I am THREATENING them? Oh, goody! If I make it clear that I have weapons, either on me or in my home or business, and that I will use them to defend myself against those who attack or who attempt to sneak in, but not on people who are friendly and open and non-threatening, am I therefore threatening 'gun violence' against them? According to many hoplophobes, I am. They have more in common with the Persians than with free people. How wonderfully we twist logic. American front Feds say Border Patrol vehicles being 'cloned' by Mexican smugglers Washington Examiner -National Security Correspondent Federal agents along the Texas border were warned by the Department of Homeland Security that Mexican drug cartels are using "cloned" Border Patrol vehicles to smuggle drugs into the United States, according to documents obtain by the Washington Examiner. A big sigh here - even the Examiner folks can't just write plain and simple English (although they may just be parroting bureaucrat-speak, which is more disturbing). The "cloned" bit just means that the drug runners are disguising their own vehicles as Border Patrol vehicles to run back and forth. I guess that must be cheaper or easier than bribing the BP to do it for them? American front Sheriff to Texas Border Towns: Arm Yourselves National Public Radio Last week, residents held a town-hall meeting in Fort Hancock, Texas — a sleepy agricultural town on the border, about an hour southeast of El Paso...A couple hundred people crowded into the grade-school gym to hear a chilling message from Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West. "You farmers, I'm telling you right now, arm yourselves," he said. "As they say the old story is, it's better to be tried by 12 than carried by six. Damn it, I don't want to see six people carrying you." Yeah,
that byline is kind of startling, isn't it? Don't work, NPR did
its
usual job of denigrating Texans, Westerners, and people with guns -
just more subtle than usual. Fort Hancock is across the Rio
Grande
from the Valle Juarez, which has a higher death rate from terrorism and
fighting than Mesopotamia does these days. But notice, while
state
troops are being deployed, the regime in DC doesn't feel it has any
obligation to protect the US itself - especially not Texas, New Mexico,
or Arizona, from invasion. I heard this sheriff in a radio interview on
Wednesday, and he was even more blunt about the need. Hudspeth
County
has about 4600 square miles (one of the biggest in Texas) and just over
3300 people - pretty sparsely populated indeed, even by Western
standards. Fort Hancock, established as Camp Rice in 1881, was one of Fort Davis's subposts intended to control the border and prevent raids by both Mexican bandits/rebels and any remaining bronco Apaches, but was abandoned in 1895. Today, its sole military forces consist of the seventeen sheriff's officers (up from just six a few years ago, thanks to an emergency grant from Austin), whatever they have for the Sheriff's Posse, and the unorganized militia of the County - given the relative youth of the population, less than a thousand all told. Across the Rio Grande in the Valle Juarez of Chihuahua State, at least two drug cartels are fighting it out while the Federales and State Police watch and try to sort things out - and local people keep getting murdered, burned out, and tortured: it is reported that at least one elderly American couple had their eyes put out with icepicks while visiting relatives across the river. Hundreds have fled to Texas, including many children transferred to schools in Fort Hancock and elsewhere, others have fled into crime-ridden, bloody Ciudad Juarez, and some have literally fled into the mountains to escape the terror and fighting. Mama's Note: And, of course, the real answer to the whole thing is the same as it has been for years... eliminate the "war on drugs" and repeal all of the DEA regulations. The fighting and murder would stop very suddenly.Culture wars: Social Issues WHO'S STILL BIASED? Daily Policy Digest Diversity training has swept corporate America, notes Drake Bennett, a staff writer for the Boston Globe. There's just one problem: It doesn't seem to work... Oh dear, oh dear. Maybe it is not the people that are so evil that they cannot embrace diversity - maybe it is the evil environment of corporate culture that they are forced to work in. Now, if the government took over their employers directly so that the could all be government workers and join SEIU or AFGE, then they'd be able to shed their evil prejudices and ways, and make up with Barney: "I love you, you love me, we're all one big family..." Theft by government: Economic Issues OVERTAXED HOMEOWNERS START TO FIGHT BACK Daily Policy Digest Millions of homeowners are paying property taxes based on the value of their home before the real estate bubble burst, say observers... And that is JUST the way that the politicians like it... Keep that money rolling in, folks, just a few more dollars and we'll pave the way to heaven on earth and a chicken (tofu, maybe) on toast in every pot (plant). New religions: Environment Issues COWS ABSOLVED OF CAUSING GLOBAL WARMING WITH NITROUS OXIDE Daily Policy Digest Livestock could actually be good for the environment according to a new study that found grazing cows or sheep can cut emissions of a powerful greenhouse gas... Okay, St. Francis of Assisi is happy, no doubt. And the environists are angry: one less excuse for veganism. First Citizen's Ministers Sebelius Says President Obama Has Instructed All Cabinet-Level Departments to Promote Public Health CNSNews.com Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says President Obama “expects” all cabinet departments to leverage their resources in support of public health, a move she suggested is unprecedented. Sebelius explained that the Department of Transportation can operate as a “health agency" by funding bike trails for communities, for example. Welcome to the Nanny State on steroids. The stupid PSA (public service announcement) that I hear four or five times a day on radio stations about the cop pulling the pedestrian over to demand his license and registration, and then ticketing him for littering by "dropping a pair of thunder thighs" isn't really too funny. Abominable Act Health Law Bans New Doctor-Owned Hospitals, Blocks Expansion of Existing Ones CNSNews.com The new health care overhaul law, which promised increased access and efficiency in health care, will prevent doctor-owned hospitals from adding more rooms and more beds. The new health care rules single out physician-owned hospitals, making new projects ineligible to receive payments for Medicare and Medicaid patients. More than 60 doctor-owned hospitals across the country that were in the development stage will be canceled, said Molly Sandvig, executive director of Physician Hospitals of America. The evil of intended consequences - destruction of the once-free economy. Doctor-owned hospitals are to go the way of doctor-owned laboratories, as we not just fear, but assume that such ownership is a complete conflict of interest - that doctors will create needless laboratory tests AND needless hospital admissions. Yet we ignore similar and far more damaging conflicts of interest to exist in our court system (with government-paid judges deciding cases against the government) and Congress itself with its pork, campaign donations, and other "traditions." Nazgul Justice Ginsburg’s Advice for Female Lawyers: Marry A Supportive Husband CNSNews.com Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the best thing female lawyers can do to ensure they have successful careers is to marry a loving, supportive husband who will not be afraid to put his wife ahead of himself. Good and faithful husbands DO put the welfare and happiness of their wives ahead of their own, either for godly reasons or because of the dictates of evolution (both worldviews generally agree in this). But to have a liberal nazgul point this out is sorta strange. Nazgul Justice Ginsburg: Supreme Court Picks Should Not Be Made Based on Religion CNSNews.com Speaking at Georgetown University Law School on Thursday, Ginsburg – one of two Jewish justices on a court dominated by Catholic members – said no justice would want to be identified by his religion. Ah, THIS sounds more like our familiar liberal nazgul. And she's wrong: Jewish and christian judges SHOULD want to be known for their faith and obedience to G-d's commands to serve justly and with mercy: we could quote passages from Amos, Isaiah, Romans, and James constantly. Indeed, can a faithful Muslim or a true atheist even understand what justice and mercy are? Much less the American, common law legal and justice system? Culture wars Activist Atheist Pair Want Pope Arrested CNSNews.com Accusing the Pope [of] covering up clerical sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens want lawyers to build a case for arresting the pope for “crimes against humanity” when he visits Britain later this year to beatify a 19th century British theologian. Speaking of the inability of atheists to understand justice... Dawkins and Hitchens, militant and fanatic as they are, see this as the perfect opportunity to discredit religion in general, of course. People who know me understand that I am no fan of the popish hierarchy or a good many other things about Roman Catholicism. Pedophilia IS and has been for centuries one of the evils attendant to the doctrine and practice of celibacy, but it is an evil that the RC Church recognizes and combats vigorously. And it is not so common as these and others would have you think - not as compared, say, to the incidence of similar evils found in the House of Commons or the United States Congress. Europe's fall Polish President Was a Reliable U.S. Ally, But Also a Candid Critic CNSNews.com The death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski cut short the leadership of a conservative who did not shy away from controversy, whether it meant annoying the European Union over the death penalty or the Kremlin over his opposition to Russian maneuvering in the former Soviet sphere of influence. His death also deprives the West of an uncompromising ally, one who was strongly supportive of the military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and willing to brave Russian anger by agreeing to host U.S. missile defense facilities as a shield against Iran. Not a bad review of the good and bad of the Polish president and government in general, although not necessarily which action/belief is good and which is bad. Congress in action - hypocrisy and betrayal Pre-Vote Stupak: ‘I’m Not Going to Run From the Issue’; Senate Bill Will ‘Go Down in Flames’ CNSNews.com In December, the day before the Senate passed its health-care bill, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich) told CNSNews.com that abortion language in Senate version of the bill was unacceptable, that the bill would “go down in flames” in the House, and that he and other pro-life Democrats were under extreme pressure from the Obama White House and House Democratic leaders to change their position on the issues. We know that politicians are liars, and that Stupak is more of a liar than most. Democratic apologists "explain" that Stupak is unable to communicate effectively with his largely rural constituents. Funny, he didn't have that problem when he ran for office - just when he turns his coat and does what he said he would not do. Too bad he is NOT running for office again: his opponents would have enjoyed running ads about "Benedict Arnold" Stupak. Tuesday First Citizen - Theft by government President's team is optimistic on deficit Washington Post The federal deficit is running significantly lower than it did last year, with the budget gap for the first half of fiscal 2010 down 8 percent over the same period a year ago, senior Obama administration officials said Monday. Let's see - down 8 percent from the 200% increase last year. Oh, so we are only at 192% from previous highs - we won't go broke - deadbeat, in the gutter broke - for at least another week or so longer than we thought! Congress in action Jobless benefits clear Senate hurdle with GOP votes Washington Post The Senate moved closer Monday to extending jobless benefits that expired a week ago, overcoming a procedural vote over the objections of deficit-conscious Republicans. One more reason I'm glad that Congress voided out the Constitution. Let us hope that hundreds of thousands will vote with their pocketbook and work to defund Congress quickly, now that it has no legal existence. Congress in action On the 50th go-round, the 60-40 thing gets old Washington Post It was a sullen celebration of a major milestone. For anniversaries, the 50th is golden. But as Republicans returned to town on Monday to mark their 50th filibuster of this 111th Congress, there were no reminiscences about filibusters past, no swapping of old snapshots of favorite obstruction... Ah, how we enjoy the mainstream media trashing traditions like this, which have in the past (if not today) kept Congress from doing some truly incredibly stupid things, and retained at least a small vestige of a republic. But even "libertarians" (and I mean the minarchist kind, not the anarcho-capitalists) don't understand why the idea of Senate filibusters and supermajorities, and even having two houses of Congress, are so important in a federal union and republic, although they are "anti-democratic." And I have been quite surprised to find so many websites of both left and right who condemn supermajorities as "unconstitutional" and "antidemocratic." Yes, it IS antidemocratic, which is a good thing. Would that we had some form of L. Neil Smith's unanimous consent, at least in the Senate. Nazgul wannabes - First Citizen White House: No front-runners for court nomination Washington Post The White House is pushing back against the notion that President Obama has narrowed his search to a trio of front-runners to fill a seat on the Supreme Court, with several officials saying on Monday that about 10 candidates remain under serious consideration. It is no surprise to me, at least, that the First Citizen has such a large and "qualified" field to choose from, since the vast majority of federal and senior state judges seem (to me, at least) to be liberal, activist, nazgul who are exactly what the Tranzis want and need to continue the transformation of this once-free American Union. Mama's Note: Let us just pray that "Hillary the Hun" has other political aspirations and would turn down this nomination. The supreme court, bad as it is, does not need a female vampire in their midst. Wednesday First Citizen's ministers White House Science ‘Czar’ Tells Students: U.S. Can’t Expect to Be Number One in Science and Technology Forever CNSNews.com The Obama administration’s top science and technology official, who has argued for the economic de-development of America, warned science students last Friday that the United States cannot expect to be “number one” forever. “We can’t expect to be number one in everything indefinitely,” Dr. John P. Holdren said at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Lowered expectations are an essential part of the propaganda effort of this Administration. In reality, there is no reason at all why a free, liberty-filled American Union with the advantages of land, resources, people (of all different origins and backgrounds) could not and SHOULD not remain number one in EVERYTHING - indefinitely. If we are NOT, it is because we have allowed ourselves to be seduced by the darkness of "security" and "safety" and are willing to accept a smothering tyranny. First Citizen - World wars Nuclear Summit Part of Obama Administration’s ‘Fantasy Foreign Policy,’ Newt Gingrich Says CNSNews.com Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich characterized this week’s nuclear summit in Washington as a “charade” that reveals the Obama administration’s “fantasy foreign policy.” On Tuesday, Gingrich also described President Obama’s emphasis on diplomacy as reminiscent of U.S. foreign policy leading up to World War II. Although I don't agree entirely with Gingrich, it is obvious that the current foreign policy is one of emphasizing American weakness and even promoting self-fulfilling prophesies of American defeat in detail - especially at home. Unfortunately, a poor foreign policy has ALWAYS been a weakness of the United States; as a confederation, as a federal union, as a decaying republic and democracy, and so we should not be surprised to see it in the post-constitutional period of today. Gasp! What if this is all nothing but a MMORPG! {Massive Multi-player On-line Role Playing Game} Congress in action - Betrayal Hoyer Calls for ‘Civility’ After Stupak Retirement CNSNews.com Speaking to reporters at his weekly press briefing on Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) had been “very courageous” in voting for health care reform, and that despite the “negative atmosphere” created by tea party activists, the embattled Michigan Democrat had not been forced out of office. Hoyer attributed Stupak’s decision to retire on the difficulty the congressman had in communicating with his mainly rural constituents. Shucks, he must have been a real hotshot as a state trooper, if he couldn't communicate. Actually, I think he communicated quite well - as I said, in running for office he's had no problem "communicating" and on further thought, none here, either - he made his disdain and contempt for his "constituents" quite plain by his voting record, as well as demonstrating his hypocrisy quite well. Stupid government tricks - Government-ruined, theft-funded schools Education Department Touts New Civil Rights Enforcement Efforts, But Will Not Investigate Suicide of Bullied Student CNSNews.com The Education Department’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights says cases involving civil rights violations in schools have been neglected, and that the Obama administration will investigate such cases more diligently. She said her office will look into the gang rape at a California school, but not a deadly bullying case at a Massachusetts school. It seems to me that the FedGov has no business doing this, with state and local governments capable of handling such matters. Instead, this becomes an excuse for the schools to take no action while waiting for the Feds and the Courts to tell them "what to do." Mama's Note: What makes anyone think "the state," at any level, is better qualified to deal with such things than the parents and communities? Almost everyone has been standing around, waiting for the Feds and courts to "tell them what to do." It's time they took charge of their own lives and families again. Politics 2010 Early Republican Straw Polls Viewed As Measure of A Candidate’s Ability to Organize Supporters CNSNews.com On Saturday, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) came within one vote of beating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the Southern Republican Leadership Conference straw poll in New Orleans. Such polls are not scientific samplings of likely Republican primary voters for 2012, but they do indicate how well candidates can organize for an event. Too many media and Republicans cheered for this as a "defeat" of the Ron Paul faction in the GOP, but considering where Romney and Paul stood four years ago, it is clear that Paul is gaining strength and Romney is losing ground. Islamic war - North Asia U.S. Hopes for Continued Access to Central Asia Base CNSNews.com Kyrgyzstan’s provisional government says it will abide by an agreement allowing the United States to use an airport near the capital of Bishkek. But amid a resurgence of Russian influence, the future of the last remaining U.S. military facility in Central Asia is far from assured. Don't hold your breath and expect there to be any sort of significant rollback of the Pax Americana. Not with the First Citizen in charge. Indeed, the administration will probably decide that the provisional government in Kyrgyzstan is as "illegal" and "fraudulent" as the Supreme Court and Congress in Honduras for deposing their tyrannical-wannabe president. So that US and Sovi... excuse me, Russian troops can work together in true Co-Dominium style and restore order in Central Asia. East Asian front - Islamic war Chinese Accounts of Obama-Hu Meeting Ignore Iran Sanctions Issue CNSNews.com Iran may have been the key topic of Monday’s one-on-one meeting between President Obama and his Chinese counterpart, but Chinese officials and state media paid far more attention to other issues, including Tibet and Taiwan. A spokesman for the Chinese delegation – visiting Washington for the nuclear summit -- made no reference to sanctions, and neither did Chinese media reporting on the meeting. Persian and Muslim influence in the fringes of the Chinese empire and those areas in the old Soviet Union which it covets may have something to do with this singular lack of coverage; or it could simply be that the Chinese Communists hope that they will have far greater benefits from being seen as a friend of Persia. Islamic war - Canaanite front Israel: Syria giving Scuds to Hezbollah Washington Post Israeli President Shimon Peres on Tuesday accused Syria of transferring long-range Scud missiles to the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, appearing to confirm rumors that have swirled in the region in recent weeks. Syria denied the charge, calling it a bid by Israel to divert attention from its policies... And it is not even Christmas! Of course, we all know that Hezbollah will only use these for self-defense, and not do like the Israelis and attack and kill innocent civilians and even more innocent government (non-military) officials - either in Lebanon or further south. Congress in action - Banks and other frauds McConnell lashes out at financial overhaul Washington Post The Senate's top Republican insisted on Tuesday that Democratic proposals to rewrite financial regulations would perpetuate the bailout of Wall Street firms, a criticism that the Obama administration quickly rejected. Actually, McConnell is probably wrong - the Administration doesn't need to bail out Wall Street, since they now virtually control it totally. This is more eyewash, smoke and mirrors. Stupid government tricks - World wars 46 nations join U.S. in nuclear pact Washington Post President Obama persuaded 46 countries Tuesday to sign on to a plan to put the world's nuclear material beyond the reach of terrorists within four years, but the commitments are voluntary, and experts said reaching the goal will be difficult. Is this mainstream "media speak" for "the whole thing was a joke?" Actually, I can understand all these governments being concerned that people will start defining themselves as "terrorists" - that is, telling the truth? And therefore THEY will have nukes put beyond their reach? "When nukes are made a government monopoly, only governments will have nukes." Scary, scary thought - although the idea of George Soros having nukes personally, instead of through his government intermediaries, is a much more scary thought. Congress in action Staffers' accounts detail life in Massa's office Washington Post Just three months after Eric Massa took office in Congress, his young male employees on Capitol Hill began complaining to supervisors that the lawmaker was making aggressive sexual overtures toward them, according to new interviews and internal documents. Look, he is a politician - by nature he is a predator! Of course, this article IS in the WaPo - maybe this is commending him for his aggressive nature. Or maybe Carol (Carol D Leonnig) is just glad this is one politician that won't make "aggressive sexual overtures" towards her. Seriously - why isn't the media treating Congress like it does the Roman Catholic Church on this sort of thing? Home front - Former American Union Oklahoma: Tea parties and lawmakers envision militia Yahoo! News "Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty. Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers. 'Is it scary? It sure is,' said tea party leader Al Gerhart ... 'But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?'" (04/12/10) Of course, you won't find the tea party movement supporting measures like this in most states, but Oklahoma is ... well, Oklahoma! And this concept gives pause for thought - militia are not ALWAYS armed: volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services are an example I've used a lot in the past. I suppose you could have "militia units" that consist more of people with briefs and citations and law books than of people with rifles and rocket launchers. (Although you will STILL need the folks with rifles to protect the others, just as you sometimes need armed people to protect firefighters.) Thursday Health Issues 28 STATES SEEK TO EXPAND THE ROLE OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS ASSOCIATED PRESS/DALLAS MORNING NEWS With a looming shortage of primary care doctors, 28 states are considering expanding the authority of nurse practitioners... This does not strike me (at first, at least) as a bad idea. Lady Susan will chime in, I'm sure. But I do believe I have a better idea: why don't the states just start enforcing victim laws like fraud and malpractice, and leave it up to you and me - as patients - to decide who we want to get medical care from, and who we want to sign off on prescriptions. (I personally think that there is a reasonable limit that I should impose on myself as regarding self-medication, but don't think the government should tell me who can and can't prescribe for me.) Now, should we call nurses "doctor" if they have a doctorate (as is proposed in some states)? My son thinks that is about as stupid, in a hospital setting, as calling a Marine Corps O-3 "Captain" on board a naval vessel, to get him and the real ship's captain confused. But then, we don't think people with PhDs and ThDs should be called "doctor" either - how about that grand old Russian title "Academician" instead? Assuming we as libertarians have to call someone other than by their christian name... opps, I'm bad, I interjected religion into the discussion. But sometimes we use the title "doctor" the way too many people in religion use "Reverend" or "Pastor" - while such titles are clearly unscriptural in religion, perhaps we need to think about the mindset that is created by granting a title like this to medical personnel. Mama's Note: See "100 Years of US Medical Fascism" for some answers to these questions. Ultimately, the free market and complete absence of the coercive force of involuntary government is the only answer. In the meantime, any steps toward that are absolutely necessary even if not perfect. As for Nurse Practitioners, this has been going on for quite a while now - quietly and without much controversy. I spent the last 10 years of my nursing career as an advanced practice nurse, though I never completed the last bit of course work to be a full fledged "NP." Much of the health care being provided in clinics and doctor's offices across the country is at the hands of nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and advanced practice nurses of all kinds. There simply have not been enough full MDs to fill the need for quite a while, and it will only get worse as socialism/fascism takes ever greater control. On the other hand, more and more people are looking to alternative forms of health maintenance and care, with astonishing results. Those who insist on relying on the allopathic model will wind up bearing the brunt of the dysfunctional ObummerCare. It is certainly their choice. :) Health Issues MALPRACTICE WORRIES HELP DRIVE HEALTH COSTS ASSOCIATED PRESS A substantial number of heart doctors -- about one in four -- say they order medical tests that might not be needed out of fear of getting sued... I'm sorry, I thought that doctors had their "human nature" excised when they finished residency. Seriously, it IS human nature to seek to protect yourself from stupid actions by others, and we all can panic. Which is why a lot of folks wonder why this so-glorious and so-grand Abominable Act (the ObamaCare law) didn't address tort reform at all. Meanwhile, my dentist (John, not even "Doc John" or "Doc") is worried because he's trying to figure out whether he is supposed to start collecting taxes on crowns, dentures, and fillings (since they are, after all, "prosthetic" devices and the law calls for taxes on such. And also whether a white porcelain crown (instead of a "plain" gold one) is all or partially "cosmetic surgery" like teeth whitening - and therefore taxed together with artificial sun tanning - speaking of which, if tanning with lamps is taxed specially, does that mean that awful stuff that turns people orange is also going to be taxed? Mama's Note: Considering the cost of all regulation and other overt or hidden taxes, this will simply be another layer of tax, not a new thing. And then, just think about the coming VAT on top of that! Penny candy will cost $1. Oh wait... some of it already does. sigh Congress in action - hypocrisy or lunacy? Rep. Grayson Calls Labor Unions Strongest Force for ‘Good Government’ CNSNews.com Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) said Tuesday that labor unions were the strongest force for “good government” in the United States. Grayson was appearing on a live webcast with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka to promote a new website that publicizes executive pay at the nation’s largest companies. I have long suspected that many Congressmen represented extraterrestrial constituencies, and this certainly seems to be the case with Mr. Grayson, whose district must exist in an alternative reality. Unions more and more promote and practice a kind of groupthink - the Borg would appreciate this more than I do, I'm sure. Once upon a time, there was (and in some places still is) a need for labor unions: for VOLUNTARY associations of workers to be able to negotiate on a level playing field with the management (or even the ownership) of large corporations. But this NOT what the modern AFL-CIO is all about: rather, it is a fascist (national socialist/corporatist) partner with government and finance to control the workers. No matter WHAT the World Workers and other socialist groups claim. Stupid government tricks Unions Making Postal Service Unsustainable, GAO Says CNSNews.com The U.S. Postal Service’s business model is not sustainable, and generous, union-backed employee benefits along with collective bargaining contracts are a big part of the problem, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office. “USPS officials told us that as mail volume declines, it would be more efficient to have a much higher proportion of part-time workers than is currently available under existing agreements,” the report said. Speaking of union groupthink... I grew up in a series of very small American towns, and have been in and around many since then, and many of these towns back in the 1960s and 1970s did very well with part-time "postal employees" - the mail got delivered, picked up, sorted, and stamps got sold (including commemoratives) six (and sometimes six and a half) days a week. These post offices were also rural stores and gas stations, or doubled as community centers and even schools and libraries. Even when stationed in Europe, we were served by (U.S.) part-time postal "employees" - they spent most of their time being soldiers. Then in the 90s and 00s, the USPS (pushed by unions, I'm sure, and by grandiose ideas of competition and empire building with the protection of a legal monopoly) replaced thousands of small rural post offices with grandiose edifices that occupy a quarter or half a city block and have three-lane driveways and six handicapped spaces for a town of under a thousand, if they didn't just close up the post office entirely (as they did in many small ranching communities in South Dakota) and make people drive 50 miles (one-way) to get to a post office, while further cutting into the visits, sales, and profits of small trading posts and stores and cafes and gas stations. People often claim that ending the USPS monopoly will leave millions of rural and frontier residents (farmers, ranchers, teachers, loggers, miners, etc.) without any mail service - but frankly, they don't have much left anymore anyway. Say that you are Joe Smith, rancher, who lives halfway between Newcastle and Wright (Wyoming). Unless you can use on-line postage generation systems (which means, in effect, high speed internet), the only way you can mail a package that weighs 13 ounces or more is to drive that 50 or 60 miles to one of the post offices DURING their limited business hours - or an Automated Postal Center (and I don't even know if one is found in either town) to buy specified postage so that they can track Joe if he is the next Unibomber - even if Joe wants to wait out at his mailbox (which is ten miles from his ranch house anyway, at the nearest road that USPS union workers will find acceptable to drive on) and give it to his mail carrier - he CAN'T. He can order "stamps by mail" but those don't work for 13+ ounce packages UNLESS he hands it to the postal clerk at the window. And of course, he has to have a credit card to buy stamps by mail or on-line - sorry, cash not accepted. And if he complains because half of his magazines were torn to shreds in his mailbox and the mailbox wasn't closed right, he has to drive into town (again, during business hours) to file a complaint. So if he decides he might as well just rent a post office box in town, he finds it costs a whole lot of money because that is a profit center for the post office - to take advantage of their bad delivery service: if you order a refrigerator or a book or a bra from Sears, and you pick it up at the store or catalog store, there is no charge for it - and you don't even have to have an account for it. But if you want Sears (or 10,000,000 other businesses) to deliver that refrigerator or book or whatever to your house, you pay for that service. If you walk into a Borders book store, and buy a book, they don't charge you for the "privilege" of coming into the store and carrying your purchase out; they only charge you shipping and handling if you have them deliver it to your house (and they don't use USPS much, do they?) Only the USPS charges you for NOT delivering the mail (and packages and such) to your house BUT charges you for the privilege of you driving or walking to the post office to get it yourself. The unions have FINISHED the job of destroying the Postal Service, but the root of the matter is that it is a flawed concept in the first place: a government-permitted, government-owned, government-controlled monopoly should have never been allowed to exist. Mama's Note: Indeed, and then add insult to injury... the "post office" is the only place in town I'm required to enter unarmed! Congress in action - Stupid people tricks Obama and Democrats Don’t Understand U.S. Economy, Would Get Answer Wrong on Citizenship Test, Republican Lawmaker Says CNSNews.com President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress probably could not correctly answer question number 11 on the test required to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said on Wednesday. Question number 11 on the 100-question citizenship test asks, ‘What is the economic system of the United States?” The two correct answers are: Capitalist Economy and Market Economy. Huh. As if the GOP (or 95% of it, at least) understand what kind of economy we have - and as if the Immigration folks even have the RIGHT answer to the question. We do NOT, say again NOT have a "market" or "capitalist" economy unless you have a very strange definition of "market" or "capitalist." (And besides, "capitalist" is a socialist term.) We have, at best, a mixed economy: one in which with each passing day the government controls and owns and operates more and more of the economic activity, and free markets and entrepreneurs are allowed to do less and less: an economy in which another sixth was just converted to a socialist economy just a few weeks ago - almost certainly bringing us up to more than 50 or even 60 percent total. WOULD that the citizenship test were right! Mama's Note: Well, a lot depends on how you look at it, and who this "we" might be. The free market is alive and well in many ways, as it always has been and always will be. These days it is called the "black market" or even a gray one... the underground economy that has always flourished in spite of governments and their machinations. It offers opportunity to everyone, including criminals and scam artists unfortunately... but then, it always did and always will. Getting the government criminals out of the picture will certainly make things a lot better and cleaner, of course, but people must exercise personal responsibility and look out for themselves for that to happen. Islamic war - First Citizen's ministers After Obama’s Strong Push for Sanctions on Iran, Administration Starts to Dampen Expectations CNSNews.com President Obama expended considerable energy this week urging international support for fresh U.N. sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities, but with continuing resistance from some influential countries, the administration is signaling that it will likely have to scale back its expectations. Obama’s meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev this week brought no indication – in public at least – that either government was willing to consider anything other than mild sanctions. So all the blathering in DC for this glorious summit and all the talkie-talkie for weeks beforehand was nothing but eyewash - a dog-and-pony show for the voters and the world. Meanwhile, the First Citizen's office has sent a warning to the states that the federal government is unable to provide any "substantial" response to a nuclear attack on a city until 24 to 72 hours after the blast. How fun! More than ever, the states need to wake up to the fact that the FedGov has CANCELED their contract - the only reason the FedGov has to "respond" to an attack on a state is to get more power and reduce the state to further slavery. Home front - Stupid government tricks Sen. Schumer to Attorney General Holder: No KSM Trial in NYC, ‘Just Say It Already’ CNSNews.com Attorney General Eric Holder testified Wednesday that the prosecution of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City was “not off the table,” but Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) issued a statement saying that he knows the Obama administration is not going to hold the trial in New York and “(t)hey should just say it already." Hmmm. What did the good Senator use to buy off the administration and get them to stay away? Or is he just out-to-lunch? I sometimes think that the only constituents that Schumer listens to are extra-terrestrials - but with everyone around NY, that might not be too imaginary. Stupid people tricks Dressed as ‘Giant Condoms,’ PETA Activists Promote ‘Safe Sex’ for Animals at a Busy Intersection in Little Rock CNSNews.com People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) dispatched two of its members to a busy intersection in Little Rock, Ark., dressed as “giant condoms” to promote “safe sex” for animals. Now, don't make too much fun - actually, we can hope that they really do try to put condoms on something like a nice male tiger in rut. Or perhaps they meant that the loving guardians of animals (formerly known as evil "pet owners") should wear these things when, ah, engaging with their animal companions? Actually, that "animal companions" phrase takes on a whole new meaning - I'm grossing myself out. Mama's Note: Hmmm, some interesting mental pictures here. I'd love to watch these fools attempt to place a "condom" on a big randy stallion or bull when the mood is upon them. Hilarious. Any animals are much more easily neutered. Our right to defend ourselves Ohio: Legal concealed weapon ruins robbery try wxix.com “Cincinnati Police are investigating a shooting where it appears a robber left the scene with the victim’s cell-phone in his hand, and a slug from the victim’s gun in his lower abdomen. Police say the robber ran into someone with a concealed-carry permit, and at some point the would-be victim was able to get his gun out and shoot the suspect, who took off running from the shooting scene …. He dropped the permit-holder’s cellular phone somewhere on a six block run to West Liberty Street just west of Manss Avenue. That is where the suspect dropped to the ground and was found suffering from a gunshot wound. The suspect was taken to the hospital.” (04/13/10) Is it safe to assume that the robber might be seriously interested in finding a new hobby? It is probably too much to hope that he has insurance and will not be a parasite off the people of Cincinnati (including his intended victim) for more than just the jail term? Mama's Note: Since the victim was confronted by three robbers, there seems to be enough reason for him to draw and fire, but it would be hard for most people to understand that from this report. As usual, they give little relevant detail, and insist on using sloppy language that treats the gun as if it were animated and sentient - along with the obligatory reference to the "permit" required. Obviously, without a "permit" the victim would be required to submit to being robbed and possibly killed. Home front - tragedy W.Va. governor asks coal mines to stop work for a day Washington Post West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin III (D) asked all underground coal mines in his state on Wednesday to halt production for one day, so that workers can review safety issues in the wake of the April 5 explosion that killed 29 miners south of Charleston. I suppose this is the rough equivalent to the USAF having a safety stand-down, except last time I checked, these companies and miners don't WORK for the governor of West Virginia. Still, it is a good idea but may have unintended consequences: what impact does this have on the power supplies and even heat for millions of people? How many jobs will this weaken? What will this do to the economy? Let us say you have a thousand employees, getting an average of $25/hour for an 8-hour day? That is 200,000 dollars of lost productivity. Mama's Note: How stupid. I cannot imagine that every mine or other industrial business doesn't have some kind of safety reviews going on all the time. They all have policies and procedures in place, and committees/executives committed to overseeing them. We had the same things when I worked in a hospital or home health agency, for crying out loud. The entire business didn't shut down simply because some specific issue came up. The real stupidity is the idea that businesses operate deliberately to make the working conditions as unsafe as possible, and that only due diligence by government bureaucrats can prevent them from killing off all of their workers at any given moment. Stupid government tricks Bill seeks to revamp U.S. chemical laws Washington Post After a year of working with environmental groups, government regulators and the chemical industry, a leading advocate for chemical regulation has devised a plan to remake the nation's chemical laws -- a 34-year-old set of regulations that all players agree is outmoded and ineffective. Speaking of lost productivity: chemical laws, like all environmental laws, have a large element of removing liability in many situations. But the way the laws are written, they are also incredibly wasteful and often do not address the real problems, even though EPA, OSHA, and MSHA claim that they have saved thousands of lives and the health of millions. However, we have a more serious problem: Congress is much less likely to produce a reasonable law that will accomplish their stated objectives today than it was 34 years ago. Yet we think that THIS TIME Congress will do it right? Please... Friday Politics 2010 On tax day, 'tea partiers' protest on Mall Washington Post Thousands of conservative "tea party" activists streamed into the nation's capital Thursday to protest Obama administration policies and denounce what they regard as excessive taxation and government spending. Clearly the WaPo do not agree with the tea-partiers, do they? But the WaPo also does not really discuss the fact that the Mall gathering was just one of hundreds - at least 88 major cities and many, many more smaller towns. Nor does the WaPo talk much about attempts to disrupt and demonize the gatherings by various groups. Mama's Note: I'm actually astonished that some form of false flag violence was not perpetrated on at least one of these peaceful demonstrations. With all the cell phones, cameras and so forth, it's probably getting harder to do anyway. :) First Citizen - Space At Space Center, Obama defends changes in NASA program Washington Post CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA. -- President Obama told an enthusiastic crowd at the Kennedy Space Center Thursday that NASA should aim to send astronauts to explore asteroids beyond the moon by 2025 and visit Mars in the next decade. Another example of "pie in the sky" (literally!) rhetoric by the First Citizen. He clearly does not believe that any of this will be done. Nor, apparently, does he know much about space. Nazgul - Culture wars Court Rules National Day of Prayer Unconstitutional CNSNews.com A federal district court in Wisconsin ruled on Thursday that the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional, a decision that has angered a constitutional law firm that filed an amicus brief defending the National Day of Prayer. The case was filed by The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based group that challenged the constitutionality of a 1988 law giving the president authority to designate the first Thursday in May as National Day of Prayer. Legal Experts Blast Judge’s Decision: ‘If National Day of Prayer is Unconstitutional, the Constitution Is Unconstitutional’ CNSNews.com Conservative legal groups and congressmen blast Thursday's ruling as ignorant and wrong -- and warn the issue could be settled at the Supreme Court by Justice Stevens' successor. The brief extract I've read of this "decision" makes little if any sense, and is filled with circular arguments. Certainly the National Day of Prayer proclamations no more force someone to do anything than the original Continental Congress memorials did, and the logic used is bizarre. The only thing logical about this case is that it is logically the next step for Tranzis and other religious fanatics (such as militant atheists) to use to attack religion in public. Congress in action - Theft by government Taxpayer Group Crowns New Congressional ‘King of Pork’, ‘Top Narcissists’ for 2010 CNSNews.com Sens. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), and Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and were the top award “winners” in the 2010 Congressional Pig Book Awards issued Wednesday by the taxpayer group Citizens Against Government Waste. Harkin and Byrd jointly won the “Narcissist Award” for 2010 – a little-coveted award given to those members of Congress who request taxpayer money to fund projects named after themselves. Byrd has won this award a LOT - there are things all West Virginia named for him, and it is sickening. Note that one of these porkbarrelers is a Republican, also. Mama's Note: Unfortunately, "waste" is not the real problem at all. Theft and coercion are the problem. Without that, the congress would have little or nothing to waste!! Politics 2010 Tea Party Group Targets Top Dems for November Defeat CNSNews.com The Tea Party Express announced Thursday that it will organize its followers to defeat top House and Senate Democrats up for re-election in November. Among the “Tea Party Targets” are Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.). The group also released a list of "heroes." The Tea Party Express is the partisan, GOP branch of the movement - or at least trying to be that. It is an attempt by the GOP to turn the anger and frustration of the tea-partiers into votes and wins for GOP candidates. But as the above article shows, the rot in Congress - if not the vote on the Abominable Act which destroyed the United States - is in BOTH parties. Stupid people tricks - Politics 2010 NYT/CBS Poll: 52% Say Obama Moving America Towards Socialism CNSNews.com A New York Times/CBS News poll asked respondents specifically whether President Obama's policies “are moving the country more toward socialism.” Fifty-two percent answered “toward socialism” while only 38 percent answered “not toward socialism.” As usual, they aren't asking the right questions. The former United States, this "nation" is already socialist - the real question is exactly what percentage: 33%, 50%, 66% or something else? Still, the numbers indicate a growing awareness in the population that something is wrong, badly wrong. Congress in action Pelosi Changes Vote Schedule – Disrupts Republicans' Plans To Attend Tea Party Rally CNSNews.com House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) recessed the House late Thursday afternoon and called for a vote at 7:30 p.m., the time when many Republicans had planned to speak at the Tax Day Tea Party gathering near the Washington Monument. Grover Norquist, president and founder of Americans for Tax Reform, said there are three people to blame for heading the country in the wrong direction: “Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and President Barack Obama.” Or the Triumvirate - leading us to Empire. One thing that is disgusting about all three of these are how petty they are. This action by Mrs. Pelosi shows that clearly. Congress in action - Theft by government Rep. King: ‘I’m For Abolishing the IRS and the Federal Income Tax Code’ CNSNews.com Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said he supports “abolishing” the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the federal income tax code. He made his remarks at a pre-tax-day event on Capitol Hill with other Republicans and several conservative activists. Talk, talk, talk. But he DID introduce a bill (together with a Florida rep) to repeal the 16th Amendment. Mama's Note: For some dark reason, I suspect the IRS will eventually be the scapegoat while some form of VAT and "flat tax" is touted as the "better" idea. And old ploy... give people what they think they want, and they won't notice that the new boss is the same as the old boss. Theft by government Poll: Americans Say They Should Pay No More Than 20 Percent in Taxes CNSNews.com A majority of Americans say they are overtaxed and think they should have to pay no more than 20 percent of their income in federal taxes. Nearly two-thirds of those polled did not know that half of the federal budget is consumed by just three items: Defense, Social Security, and Medicare. I of course disagree, but this is a heartening sign - even if they didn't ask the right questions. How much tax is too much? In my opinion, ANY tax is too much. If I DID not believe that taxes were immoral, or if I were setting a level for voluntary support of government at all levels, I would say that 10% is the max COMBINED number: probably something like 5% to local, 3% to state, and 2% to federal - given freely, just like the 10% to the church. Stupid government tricks Hillary Clinton: ‘We Have a Lot to Learn’ About Energy Policy From Other Nations CNSNews.com Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told officials from more than 32 Western Hemisphere nations on Thursday that the United States is looking to those nations to develop better energy policies and practices. She said the U.S. has a “deep respect” for the way nations such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica are developing clean fuels and adopting sustainable technologies: “We know we have some catching up to do, and we’re committed to doing just that,” Clinton said. Her normal way of operating seems to be boot-licking. We might learn something (a bit) from Brazil, but from the rest? Only what NOT to do - and even from Brazil, do we want to learn how Petrobras (now largely owned by George Soros, apparently) does so badly as a state monopoly? Please. Home front - Islamic war Miami Bus Companies Tear Down "Anti-Muslim" Advertising World Net Daily Miami's transit agency censored advertisements offering a resource to Muslims desiring to leave Islam after the Council on American-Islamic Relations complained and government officials worried the message "may be offensive to Islam.""This is living under Shariah (Islamic) law," said the group behind the ads, Stop Islamization of America. "They are pulling our SIOA ads off the buses in South Florida because they offend Muslims."... Spencer also cited a series of previous pro-Islamist ads displayed prominently by transit agencies around the country. "So Muslims can run bus ads all across America inviting the clueless to convert to Islam, but we cannot make information available to Muslims who want to leave Islam," he wrote. The article, and the website RefugefromIslam.com have pictures of both the ads that were taken off buses and the pro-Islam ads which have been and continue to be run. The only difference I can see is that the people paying for the freedom from Islam ads are less likely to vandalize or blow up the buses than the extremists who are Muslims. Our right to defend ourselves Mama's Note: This new "law" in Arizona bears little resemblance to RKBA in Vermont. The long and silly list of rules and prohibited places for CC did not go away. A stop by a cop for any reason can result in disarming and even confiscation of the firearm in the absence of any criminal behavior. It is totally at the discretion of the cop. So, if you carry in AZ just be aware, and very careful... Your comments and feedback are welcome! Now PoL has its own forum at The Mental Militia!
