Sen. Landrieu Says She'll Let 'Lawyers on Our Staff' Figure Out If Constitution Authorizes Congress to Force Americans to Buy Health Insurance CNSNews.com Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) told CNSNews.com she would leave it up to the “constitutional lawyers” to explain exactly where Congress gets the constitutional authority to force Americans to buy health insurance, the central mandate in both the Senate and House health care bills. This is the problem, of course, these "leaders" cannot and will not make decisions that a high school student should be able to make - whether or not government has the power to do something. Mama's Note: Claiming the "power" and carrying it out may well be two different things. I suspect the government just may be biting off more than it can chew with this, and a few other little things that seem to be in the works. A fair number of us "cats" have no intention of being herded anywhere. (Read the rest here) ![]() A
Re-Write of the Bill of
Rights through the Preamble
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press With the 218th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights only days away, every American who has graduated from high school should be able to explain the original intent of the Amendments in ten minutes or less. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The last thing the statists want is a constitutionally educated populace. Thus, government and the education system it controls continue to distort and hide the true intent of the Amendments. The goal of government is to convince the people of these United States that the document known as the Bill of Rights is the source of their rights and government was granted the constitutional authority to determine the extent of those rights. In other words, government views the Amendments as a source of power over the rights of the people. Fortunately, there is a quick and simple way to disprove this assertion and show the true intent of the Amendments. (Read the rest here)
![]() Climategate, Mediagate, and Abusegate By Carey Roberts Attention Global Warming Skeptics: There’s no need to work ourselves into a dither over Climategate, the risible global caper designed to make us believe the world will soon be turning into a burnt crisp. After all, Climategate is the new kid on the block, compared to all the other Leftist bamboozles. Take Mediagate, the fact that the lamestream media stonewalled the Climategate story for two full weeks, hoping to get beyond the Copenhagen summit to limit the fall-out. But this past weekend the media moguls finally realized they had to pull back the green velvet curtain – and then used every trick in the book to downplay the scandal. The Washington Post featured the story on Saturday when no one bothers to read the newspaper. CBS aired the report knowing its news program would be preempted by college football. NBC reassured its global warming true believers “the evidence is overwhelming that man is behind climate change.” And ABC mentioned the dust-up without revealing what the incriminatory emails actually said. ![]() The Fallacy of Public Goods: Libertarians and National Defense by Per Bylund Public goods are defined as goods or services
that are both
non-rivalrous and non-excludable, i.e. the “exact opposite” of private
goods, which are both rivalrous and excludable, in the common
two-by-two setup. Whatever is rivalrous is limited in terms of
consumption, which means your use of the good reduces availability of
it for others; whatever is excludable can be “protected” from others
through exclusion, i.e. if I have it and want to use it I can easily
make sure you can’t have it. In other words, the rivalrous and
excludable private goods are cakes that you cannot both eat and have.
It follows that public goods, as the very opposite of private goods,
are cakes we all can eat and have at the same time.
The setup has obvious political connotations in that private goods are like private property in the free market whereas public goods are of a rather communist character and require government regulation. Consequently, public goods are used as an argument against the free market and for a government. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.) A
Freedom Lover's Faustian Bargain
by Paul Bonneau I have read many pro-freedom articles on Strike
The Root, but one of
the strangest was Jim Davies' piece "Handouts."
Somehow, I had a hard
time reconciling what I was reading there, with Thoreau's quote at the
top of the page. Who'd-a thunk it? That we could hack at the root of
evil by profiting from it? I mean, how cool is that?
Still, I thought I would try to apply a critique of Jim's six points, to make sure I'm not letting him lead me down the garden path ending up in a place I don't want to be. Some of this may appear repetitious, if only because his points also appear that way. The first thing to notice is that Jim admits, ". . . to accept the handout is to be complicit in that aggression." What he does subsequently, however, is simply to ignore that point, as if it is a detail to be brushed aside. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. The "Firearms Freedom Acts" are manifestations of a growing movement declaring "that any firearms made and retained in-state are beyond the authority of Congress under its constitutional power to regulate commerce among the states." We've been following both these stories here, noting resulting debates. Here's the latest. A sex offender registry by any other name? Examiner I have had some authoritarian thoughts sneak into
my personal life in
the past few days, and they made me miserable. It's no wonder
statists
are so unhappy and always so determined to take away everyone else's
joy. Misery loves company. It really is uncomfortable to
feel the
desire to control the lives of others and stick your nose where it does
not belong.

By Kevin Wilmeth Used to be that the saying was celebrate with impunity, but we've moved past that now. Now, it's just "celebrate impunity". The nod (surprise) is to William Norman Grigg, who regales us with the tale of folk hero Officer Christopher Humphreys. Folk hero? Uh, well, he sure seems to be a folk
hero among his law-enforcement brethren, at least. (Read

police state should know
there is a small but growing resistance within law enforcement itself.
Even after the Colorado State University Student Senate resoundingly endorsed their longstanding right of concealed carry the board of governors voted to ban all guns from the campus. But Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden had already told students in an email that his office would "not hold or detain a valid permit holder who violates that policy, nor would his department have anything to do with enforcing that policy."
