Venezuela: Regime destroys 30,000 guns
Yahoo! News

"Battling with one of the world's highest murder rates, Venezuela on Wednesday crushed more than 30,000 guns seized from the streets during police raids this year. Policemen used blow-torches to chop up some of shotguns and pistols. They compacted weapons including home-made pistols into a 5 ton block. ... Gun laws are lax in the South American oil exporter. The government estimates there are 6 million firearms circulating among the population of about 28 million. Venezuela's murder rate is about 8 times that of the United States. Crime has risen under President Hugo Chavez, who has focused on poverty reduction to tackle violence in poor city neighborhoods." (11/12/09)

I find these numbers fascinating - Venezuela is hardly a third-world country, and the ratio of privately-held firearms to people is low (6 to 28, or 1:4.6). By comparison, the US has (2004 figures - suspect, I admit - suspiciously low) 192 million firearms for 290 million residents, or about 1:1.4. Yet Venezuela has a murder rate 8 times the US? What happened to "guns cause murders" routines?

Mama's Note: That's a bit out of date. Here is what I found in a brief search:

* An estimated 34 percent of the citizens in the United States own firearms, and there are thought to be more than 200 million firearms in private hands. [Some sources place that at over 300 million. ML]

* There are 640 million guns in the world, and another 8 million new guns are manufactured annually by more than 1,200 companies in 92 countries. Ten billion to 14 billion units of ammunition are manufactured every year. [These numbers, of course, do not include the guns manufactured by individuals, nor the billions of rounds reloaded. ML]

Thanksgiving Challenges
By Susan Callaway, Editor

Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving... Colossians 4:2

What are we thankful for today, this week/month/year? It is so easy to see all of the problems around us, and fear for the future as one crisis after another breaks on the news... but are we losing sight of our many blessings as we complain and/or do what we can to prepare for the worst?

Thanksgiving day is one such blessing, of course, and most of us at least spend some time then to count our blessings and give thanks to God, but I suspect we'd all be better off if we didn't leave it to one day a year.

How many of us open our eyes in the morning and think first of the most pressing problem of the day? We can, and should, take that concern with us into our prayer time - I do hope yours is in the morning...

But how much better would it be if we trained ourselves specifically to be grateful for life itself when we first open our eyes after sleeping! What if our prayer time was first dedicated to praise, thanksgiving and joy? Might we then see more clearly the answers God has for our troubles and worries?

Just an idea...

The Exploitation of the Mentally Ill by Abuse Shelters
By Carey Roberts

In the former Soviet Union, dissidents who saw fit to challenge the prevailing socialist ideology were deemed to be certifiable nut cases. These men were packed off to the loony asylum for a regimen of forced re-education – a bizarre form of treatment that later came to be known as “Soviet psychiatry.”

In the United States, feminists believe if a woman suffers from mental illness, the cause must be oppressive patriarchal culture. These women become unwittingly subjected to a rouge brand of therapy called “feminist psychology.”

Over the years I’ve come across cases of women in domestic violence shelters who became unwitting Guinea pigs at the hands of feminist psychology practitioners. These are their heart-rending stories. (Read the rest here)

Major Victory With Swine Flu Scandal
by Joseph Mercola

There is plenty to be optimistic about as it seems the tide may be slowly turning on this swine flu debacle, showing it for the hoax it really is. European scientists are now demanding answers to the growing inconsistencies. And, while many so-called scientific experts have criticized me and others who have spoken out about this senseless mass-vaccination campaign, more of the scientific community is now coming to the same conclusions we’ve been talking about for months.

It looks as though the swine flu pandemic of 2009 will go down as one of the biggest government and pharmaceutical scams ever, renewing a healthy, and necessary, skepticism about the swine flu vaccine and the dubious dealings behind the implementation of worldwide mass-vaccination programs. Holder tells Senate committee Justice Department supports more 'gun control'
by David Codrea

In unmistakably clear admissions before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Nov. 18, Attorney General Eric Holder signaled strong administration support for additional "gun control" edicts.

Law Enforcement Alliance of America, the only national law enforcement organization to oppose Holder's confirmation, issued a press release warning: (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

  'Hate crimes'

By Kent McManigal

"Hate crimes".  Is there any more ridiculous concept?  If something is wrong to do, your hatred as motivation for doing it doesn't make it worse, just like any possible good intentions as motivation don't excuse any harm that you do.  If "hate crimes" must become a "legal reality" then the flip-side, mass-murder with the "best of intentions", must be made "legally" acceptable as well.  w00t! The 'Pirate-Finder General'
By Kevin Wilmeth

Please, ladies and gentlemen, put down your coffee before proceeding.  (You'll thank me for this.)

Poster Brad at wendymcelroy.com has been following Cory Doctorow's alarm-sounding over the UK's continued plunge into totalitarianism, and noted Doctorow's use of the phrase "Pirate Finder General" to describe the proposed cyberführer.    PASS ID just REAL ID pig in lipstick

By Garry Reed

Few people seem to be aware that PASS ID is a near-clone of REAL ID just waiting to be sprung on us. Some background:

REAL ID, the federal government's attempt to turn every state's drivers license into a homogenized national ID card, may not quite be dead yet but it seems to be on its back with legs kicking.

The REAL ID Act, a Bush-era "anti-terrorism" initiative, mandated that all states adopt a single national standard for identifying and authenticating people through state-of-the-art driver's licenses that incorporated a photo, embedded electronic data, and "biometric identifiers."
