Late breaking news:  The US House of Representatives approves climate bill
CNNMoney

The House approved a sweeping energy and climate bill Friday which could for the first time usher in widespread government restrictions on greenhouse gases and help renewable energy become cost competitive with fossil fuels. The bill passed 219-212, with virtually no Republican support.

Wrong - there were EIGHT GOP members who voted for the bill - the margin of victory.  And there were 257 Democrats - so 46 Democrats voted against it: almost 1 in 5.  This 1200+ page bill is, by its very nature, an abomination, and literally, no one person knows what all is in it.  To make matters worse, what I heard from the House floor in the few minutes I listened was more like an open-air market auction than a reasoned debate: Waxman and Pelosi were essentially buying the votes that they needed by adding provisions to the bill.  Someone accurately compared it to the gross behavior of the Roman Senate in the last days of the Republic.  No matter how the Senate votes in this matter (sometime this fall, maybe), the reputation of the House is permanently tainted and I fail to see any way to redeem its honor. A Closer Look At The Second Amendment
By The Hunter

A hideously confusing maze of regulations now exists where it is very easily possible to have two PRECISELY identical firearms - one legal, and the other carrying a felony conviction to own because it was manufactured one day later than the other. That, sir, is the height of idiocy, and the very definition of arbitrary and capricious. It is a mockery of justice to have such irrational laws on the books.

This is the "common sense" legislation that you claim protects people? It might interest you to know that noted economist John Lott's latest book "The Bias Against Guns: Why Almost Everything You've Heard About Gun Control is Wrong" reports on research showing quite clearly that the "assault weapons ban", if it had any impact at all, appears to have INCREASED murder and robbery rates (chapter 8). If that is your idea of protection, I believe I'd rather take my chances, thank you kindly. (Read the rest here)

Politically Incorrect Movie Reviews

The Taking Of Pelham 123

By RadioFree Rocky D

Is Hollyweird running out of original ideas? In a word, yes. And no. Oh, there are original ideas out there, but in a world where La La Land nepotism, political correctness and a struggling Obamelosi economy rule the day, you’re likely to see more remakes, sequels, prequels and “safe” movies. Movies that can be made quickly, sell toys or promise not to be oh-fensive to whiney minorities. Hence we have the remake of the 1974 classic The Taking Of Pelham 123. They didn’t even change the title, which heretofore will be known as TP123 (“TP” as in toidy-paper ). To watch the original 1974 film and then go see this remake is to witness, indisputably, the absolute decline in mainstream Hollyweird filmmaking. They could have easily re-titled the film:Vinny Barbarino’s Wild Ride. (Read the rest here)

Hal Turner is the latest right wing bogeyman to be picked out by an Obama administration eager to increase police power and reduce individual rights. By arresting and charging him they are developing their thesis that right-wingers are, ipso facto, terrorists. Historically, mind you, terror and tyranny have come from the left as often as from the right. Obama's Justice Department seems quite as eager as the Bush League to stifle free speech. Since Obama's election, MSNBC presstitutes have been as willing to try dissidents in the media as the FOX bushmen ever were.

I did an interview with Turner about the Battle of Baghdad cover-up by the mainstream media, which took place at the beginning of the Iraq war. It was the real story behind the cover story of Private Jessica Lynch. I found him to be the best informed radio host in America on that issue, and others. After our interview, he offered me an hour slot, gratis, to broadcast a weekly Ghost Troop Hour. I gave his kind offer serious consideration, but declined, not wanting to be associated with his racism. (Read the rest here)

Balance of Power: Political Power
By Sunni Maravillosa

Many people seem to think that elections are a manifestation of individuals' aggregate political power. Voting gives individuals a say in the government they live under. Electoral political power, in this view, is the primary vehicle by which individuals wield political power over the politicians they elect, and the legislative process the politicians then undertake. The clamor for elections in countries ruled by tyrannical leaders is a compelling demonstration of the enduring strength of these beliefs. The disappointment when elections are found -- or simply suspected -- to be tampered with reflects individuals' desires to exercise greater control over their lives. Thus, the outcries of Venezuelans or protests by Belarussians -- or even Americans' suspicions -- aren't surprising. They wuz robbed! Except that Ken Livingstone's famous quotation -- If voting changed anything, they'd abolish it -- is spot on. (Read the rest here)

The Supreme Court Nominee Who Can’t Write

By Carey Roberts

Supreme Court opinions are words for the generations that can affect the lives and welfare of millions. No one doubts that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has a compelling life story. But more to the point, we need to inquire about her aptitude to draft thoughtfully-reasoned, well-crafted legal opinions.

On this count, there is reason for worry.

Sotomayor herself has admitted, “Writing remains a challenge for me even today…I am not a natural writer.” Reporter Stephanie Mencimer has characterized Sotomayor’s legal opinions as “good punishment for law students who show up late for class.” (Read the rest here)

Why not focus on Mexican cartel/police alliance instead of U.S. guns?
by David Codrea

Who in their right mind believes Mexican police and military personnel rely on "straw purchasers" at U.S. gun shops and gun shows to obtain military-grade firepower? Who in their right mind does not believe these corrupt LEOs and soldiers haven't exploited their access to state-procured weapons--to the advantage of their drug cartel patrons?

Meanwhile, half a world away, another headline catches my eye: U.S. Sends Weapons to Help Somali Government Repel Rebels Tied to Al-Qaeda

What could go wrong?

Double Whammy
by Peter Schiff

The meteoric rise in health care costs, which has become an unending nightmare for U.S. businesses and consumers, is not an accident. This painful condition has arisen from excess government involvement in the system, tax provisions that encourage the over-utilization of health insurance, and government support of an out-of-control malpractice industry. Rather than allowing more bad policy to drive health care costs further upward, we should be looking at ways to allow market forces to rein them back in.

If left alone, the free market drives quality up and costs down. Government programs produce the opposite result. Despite the president’s claim that a federal plan will bring costs down, there is no historical precedent for such faith. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.  ‘Someday They’ll Break From the Weight of Their Sins’
By Michael Gaddy

On July 27, 2009, a parole hearing will be held for Leonard Peltier. Mr. Peltier has served 33 years in federal confinement for a crime I believe he did not commit. The preponderance of evidence supports my belief. Peltier’s last parole hearing was held in 1993.

Leonard Peltier is not in prison for killing the two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Agents as is alleged, he has been incarcerated for 33 years because he belonged to a group (American Indian Movement) that dared to challenge the federal government and their lies. When one has the audacity to challenge the fedgov, he/she becomes a target for malicious prosecution, fabricated evidence, witness tampering and illegal imprisonment. Leonard Peltier has experienced all of these in the extreme. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Harold Koh- Playing by the 'global rules'
By Kent McManigal

According to GOA, Mr. Koh:

...who served at the State Department under the Clinton administration, is a self-described "trans-nationalist" who believes that our laws -- and our Constitution -- should be brought into conformity with international agreements. "If you want to be in the global environment, you have to play by the global rules," Koh told a Cleveland audience.

Really?  So if everyone else jumped off a cliff into molten lava Mr. Koh would do it too?  Or would he just push you and me over the edge?  What if "the global rules" are wrong (as sensible people suspect)?  Does Mr. Koh only like the "global rules" if they conform to his socialist, genocide-enabling agenda? This could be you
By Kevin Wilmeth

Yesterday, the topic was a mayor who wants you to believe the police can suspend your rights whenever they say so.  Where does such an attitude come from?

One source of the problem, for sure, is the unintended consequences of the War on (Some) Drugs.  We're going to grant, for the sake of argument, that these consequences are indeed unintended--because designing this outcome can only be considered an act of war against the peaceable. Nonmovie Nonreview: Guv Busters
By Garry Reed

What say it's time for a little fun?

Anyone can write a real review of a real movie. But as a libertarian, or anyone else even remotely interested in real, actual, genuine, not-lip-service freedom, wouldn't you really rather read a nonreview of a nonmovie you would love to see but can't because it hasn't been made?
