Commentary on The News 16 - 21 March, 2009 Home
front: That said, let me make some personal observations. FIRST, I thank God that I and my family are incredibly blessed that the two states that we live in are right at the top of the list - "scientific" proof that we made good decisions, now a decade and just short of two decades ago. Keeping in mind that there is STILL an incredible difference in the freedom afforded someone in, say, Sioux Falls or Brookings versus someone in Fall River or Harding Counties; and between someone in that snake's den called Metro-Denver and someone living in Montezuma or Dolores Counties: it is nice to know that my wife and I live, and have raised our boys, in two of the most free places in the known universe. But... SECOND, I am incredibly saddened - even depressed - by the thought that SD, NH, and CO are the most free nations in the Union, economically and personally, given how much I see how our day-to-day lives are regulated in the most minute of details and our professional and working lives are subject more and more to an arbitrary and capricious multilevel regulatory governmental regime that is correctly described as a police-state in virtually every way; how hideous the rest of the country (even Wyoming in some ways, I have to admit) must be if these are the best of the best. Mama's Note: Having lived most of my life in California, and the last three years in Wyoming, I'd have to say that there simply is NO comparison at all. No, we are not totally free here, by any means... But we have neighbors who still value individual responsibility, integrity and self sufficiency. These are the people (wherever they are found) who can, and will, rebuild this nation once the vermin in central government are eliminated. And I say, the sooner that starts, the better. Obama
Womens Council Tells its First Lie
The Maidens of Mendacity are at it again, only this time theyre speaking from the bully pulpit that President Obama himself established. A couple weeks ago President Obama established the White House Council on Women and Girls. During the March 11 ceremony, Obama explained, Its not enough to only have individual womens offices at different agencies, or only have one office in the White House.
The very next morning the Offices director, Valerie Jarrett, went on NPR Morning Edition. This is what Jarrett had to say: Domestic violence is still a major issue, not just for women but also for girls. Within those 15 well-crafted words lurk two shameless lies. (Read the rest here)
What To Do I would never be so presumptuous as to advise anyone as to what action he or she should take when this event occurs. This is a most critical decision that requires much thought and consultation with those (family/friends) who would have to live with the aftermath of such a decision. Americans, over the past few decades, have become so accustomed to having decisions made for them by the state, it becomes second nature to ask others to make, or help make, vital decisions. We have lost a great portion of our individualist mentality and morphed into the collective mindset. I wrote in an earlier article " it is not the gun in the hands of a freeman the tyrant fears, but the spirit of the man who possesses it." The fact a man/woman owns the means of resistance, is, in itself, a tremendous threat to the tyrant who would use his elected/appointed position to steal, that which belongs to others, or to disarm his intended victims. The mindset of resistance to tyranny is much more powerful than any firearm. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
Our
Right To Defend Ourselves National
Gun Rights Examiner I'll leave it to others to present statistical arguments refuting U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's insane ruling that an environmental impact study has any relevance to real-world consequences if existing state laws regarding concealed carry are applied in national parks. The crux of her extremist position? The lynchpin of Defendants response is that the Final Rule has no environmental impactsand that Defendants were not required to perform any environmental analysisbecause the Final Rule only authorizes persons to possess concealed, loaded, and operable firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges, and does not authorize persons to discharge, brandish, or otherwise use the concealed, loaded, and operable firearms. Articles One of the ironic blessings of a cataclysmic economic "correction" may be the widespread dismantling of state and local police departments assuming, of course, that the vacuum can be filled with informal "citizen's posses" and "home guards" composed of armed, responsible property owners. As a homework assignment for those skeptical that such arrangements can work, at least in modest-sized communities, I recommend the wonderful book Tough Towns: True Tales from the Gritty Streets of the Old West, by Oklahoma attorney Robert Barr Smith. The title is slightly misleading, since some of the best accounts of spontaneous law enforcement by the citizenry (such as the battles against bank robbers in Miller Creek, Oklahoma, Menomonie, Wisconsin, and especially the small black enclave of Boley, Oklahoma) occurred during the (last) Great Depression. Cambodian
Road Trip I maintain that Obama and his henchpersons know perfectly well what they're doing to what was once the most peaceful, prosperous, and progressive nation-state in human history, and that they're doing it deliberately. In Cambodia (hang in there, I'm not really changing the subject), between 1975 and 1979, Communists calling themselves the Khmer Rouge managed to murder somewhere between a quarter and a third of their nation's population, about two million individuals in all, mostly by driving them out of the big cities, where they had lived more or less normal 20th century Productive Class lives, and marching them out into the open countryside where they were commanded to cast off the western influences dominating their lives and start over again virtually as prehistoric farmers. Those who didn't survive the march or couldn't make the change were beaten to death with shovels in order to save ammunition. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Libertarian Examiner A common assumption that authoritarians make about libertarians is that since we talk a lot about "rights", we believe in a free-for-all. That is completely wrong. I am a firm believer that just because you have a right to do something, it doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. Common courtesy and self-responsibility should temper your actions. An often-quoted erroneous statement about rights concerns the right of free speech. The claim is that rights are subject to "reasonable" legal restrictions. They are not, because then they would not be "rights", but "privileges" granted by a government. The opinion is that while you have a right to speak freely, you have no right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater. That is dead wrong. You do have that right, since rights have no limitations, however if you choose to exercise that right you will also bear the responsibility for any harm that comes as a result. This is a perfect example of a right that is better left unused. Only a fool or an evil person would commit such an act. Responsibility doesn't end there. If you are sitting in a theater where someone yells "Fire!", you have a responsibility to react to the situation without trampling the other patrons. It would make sense to look around, sniff the air, and see whether there is any cause for alarm before attempting to navigate the stampede. Watch out for yourself and for those you have a responsibility toward. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
Dallas
Libertarian Examiner The idea of both sides of an issue is a fiction anyway, since virtually every issue has multiple sides that would include like, say, the libertarian side. So the few libertarian radio voices out there like, say, Neal Boortz or Larry Elder, would be washed away by the Fairness Doctrine as well. And what will happen to John Stossel on ABC-TV? The phony both sides straightjacket is designed to ignore the reality that there are more than two sides. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute In his Wall Street Journal article from March 11, 2009, former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan rejects the idea that the Feds low-interest-rate policy between December 2000 and June 2004 fueled the housing bubble, which in turn laid the foundation for the current economic crisis. (The federal funds rate was lowered from 6.5% in December 2000 to 1% by June 2003. It was kept at 1% until June 2004 when the rate was raised by 0.25%.) Do
you know a good liberty centered blog? The Ultimate Answer to Kings ... It finally came to me - and that's when I left the city, abandoned a goodly percentage of my goods, and gave all that was behind me a good, stiff Randian Shrug. The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh. [Mama's Note: This is much more of a personal ramble than the blogs usually posted here, but the author offers many wonderful freedom insights, in a context that is both entertaining and stimulating. He's "doing freedom" in a very real way, and willing to share that journey with us.]
