Libertarian Commentary on The News 01 - 07 March, 2009
By Nathan A. Barton © 2009

Sunday
Sad news this week: the death of Paul Harvey, one of the few honorable members of the "mainstream media" and an influence for more than 60 years, who respected truth and morality more than advertising sales and power.

Follow-up to last week:
My comments on the lead article last week were misconstrued by Mama Liberty and others: I am NOT advocating going and hiding all your guns in a hole in the forest: I am simply saying that if you can afford to buy multiple weapons for your family, that you need to find safe places to put at least some of them. By all means, keep weapons readily available at home and work, carry (openly or concealed), and have these useful tools exactly where you need them - at hand. But ALSO try and squirrel away some guns'n'ammo for a rainy day - exactly as Mark talks about in his book which review shared the front page. Have something hidden out. Please. For the sake of freedom.

Mama's Note: We must each make such decisions for ourselves, of course. I don't expect to live much beyond the first attempt to confiscate them anyway. (Read the rest here)

Ghost Troop: USA 666 WMD (3/11/09 - 9/9/09)
An American Advisory to Police and Military

By Captain Eric H. May

Ghost Troop issues this American Advisory to all US constitutional guardians, including police and military officers:

A terror attack in the first year of the Obama administration is likely:

• Three of the previous four presidencies began with a terror attack.
• There was a 3/30/81 assassination attempt against Reagan.
• There was a 2/26/93 Twin Towers terror attack under Clinton.
• There was a 9/11/01 Twin Towers terror attack under Bush 43.

Neither Preditor Nor Prey
By Nathan A. Barton TM and © 2009

A decade ago, Claire Wolfe basically asked a question, When will it be time to shoot? (101 Things to Do 'Til the Revolution: Ideas and Resources for Self-Liberation, Monkey Wrenching and Preparedness by Claire Wolfe (Paperback - Jan 1999): "It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the b***ds." Many of us have tried to answer that question over the last ten years; even while we still tried, in forlorn hope, to "work within the system" at the same time. And a few people have answered "now" - usually hastening their speedy demise.

Mark Spungin (with the assistance of wife Beverly) has now provided their answer to that question of Claire's, in writing. His fictional (or quasi-fictional) characters living in Wyoming answer that question at some unknown time between 2009 and 2016. And it is a good answer, a realistic answer, and an answer that is perhaps all too plausible. (Read the rest here)

Gun Hater's Red Herrings
By Kevin Wilmeth © 2009

Denver Gun Rights Examiner Dan Bidstrup recently posted a thoughtful article on trying to reach out to people that don't understand "gun rights" for what they are. This is a thorny topic, given that many reasonable people are already so fed up with being sanctimoniously harassed, attacked, and spat upon by the hardcore disarmers that they have no interest left for any attempt at discourse, even with those in the middle who may be more just ignorant than truly belligerent.

Personally, I've always been a sucker for hope and redemption, and although I sympathize--strongly--with the "decades of politely begging for a civil conversation has got us nowhere" point of view, I can't help but continue with each person as though the conversation has started all over from the beginning. Maybe it's the teacher in me, I don't know, but one on one I will grant anyone respect until he proves himself undeserving of it. (Sadly, many people can do this with absolutely stunning speed. To paraphrase a comment I first heard David Codrea make, some people immediately forfeit any right to a rational conversation.) (Read the rest here)

The General Welfare Clause is the Enemy not the Sixteenth Amendment
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

This is the third and final article on the FairTax, the FairTaxers' assertions concerning Sixteenth Amendment, and the federal tax system established by the Constitution. In "The FairTax and Sixteenth Amendment," I exposed the misconceptions by the FairTaxers concerning the federal income tax and their plan to repeal the Sixteenth Amendment. And in "FairTax or No Tax," I showed there would be no need for the American people to pay any federal income taxes, or a so-called FairTax, if Congress were obeying the Constitution. Since Congress is using a clause in the body of Constitution, not the Sixteenth Amendment, to tax and plunder, I recommend you take a few minutes and read: "The Federal Government is using the General Welfare Clause to Steal your Money" because it provides a basic overview of the history and controversy surrounding the General Welfare Clause.

In this article, I will expand the debate on the General Welfare Clause and show that Congress has totally perverted the Founders intent concerning this Clause. This will include an alternative to the FairTax proposal to repeal the Sixteenth Amendment. (Read the rest here)

'No Guns for Negroes'
by David Codrea

I want to tell you about another effort to help open eyes on this subject. A politically incorrect effort. An in-your-face effort. And I support it. Aaron Zelman, Executive Director of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, has been at the leading edge of creative gun rights advocacy since he first became prominent in the movement in the mid-Eighties. He's working on a new project that takes the gloves off.

We are ramping-up the vital, missing education strategy. One that will quickly break through all the media double speak -- turning tables in our favor -- in spite of the seemingly overwhelming odds. The strategy…Destroy Political Correctness (PC) and the False Guilt “Pimp Politics” that Fuel it... (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Bethany House of Virginia, An Abuse Shelter Out of Control
By Carey Roberts

Bethany House of Northern Virginia is an abuse shelter that provides “warmth and shelter” to persons suffering from domestic violence -- at least that’s what the group claims. But now a former shelter worker, client, husband, and a sitting judge have all come forward to reveal a sordid tale of unethical and illegal conduct.

The first bombshell hit in 2004 when a former shelter volunteer filed a three-page letter of complaint. Alleging the staff was “enraged with a bottomless pit of anger at men,” she charged the shelter admitted women who had never suffered physical abuse, indoctrinated them into feminist ideology, and then bribed them to commit perjury against their husbands. The Evil That Men Do: Willful Submission To Illegitimate Authority
by William Buppert

What is the authority or color thereof that these alien entities are gobbling up entire patterns of human existence? I have hinted before that the denizens of Mordor on the Potomac act as if their authority is unlimited and their ultimate reach is anything they please. We are witnessing a vicious brew of Sovietization and Mussolini-style state corporatism that will take a revolution to undo. The annals of Western history are full of this kind of grand hubris enabled by consent both willing and silent on the part of the populace. Humans tend to submit to a yoke or collar when invested with fear and anxiety about futures worse than now. The corpse-count in the twentieth century topped 165 million outside of warfare through democide. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

A Kinder, Gentler Totalitarianism
by Robert Weissberg

Eric Holder’s “nation of cowards” comment wasn’t simply a roundabout way of making the tired old accusation of “institutional racism.” It signaled the acceleration of a trend toward the state policing not only of behavior but attitudes, ideas, and the interpretations of facts. Your thoughts might be impure. Attorney General Holder is here to help.

On February 18th 2009, Eric Holder, our first African American Attorney General gave a well-publicized speech in which he called Americans cowards for, among other things, refusing to engage in an open, frank dialogue about our race relations. Reactions were immediate, nearly all negative and most correctly saw this as an effort to put whites in pillory so as to hector them with the usual accusations of racism, discrimination and all the rest as a first step to extract more tangible benefits. This much was clear. Less obvious, but more important, is that a “frank and open discussion” will inevitably invite government to monitor our private thoughts to build a “better” more racially just society. Core Principles and Tribal Duties
From Sipsey Street Irregulars

Much, MUCH more at the source.

Unfortunately, IMHO, even with a complete and powerful updated framework for political liberty and personal freedom, we still run aground on what is in my mind the single biggest gap between the folks in the 18th and 19th centuries and today's homo Americanus: People back then would kill you if you stepped hard enough and often enough on their toes.

The bulk of Americans today have been culturally and morally castrated, in the post-WW2 European model. Hence, you can take their very children from them and they will simply bluster and cringe. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Politicalspeak 101
By Garry Reed

Since politics has become a year-round hunt with no definable season, this article is offered as a public service for those who want to become political sharpshooters but aren't completely familiar with the vocabulary of this most ancient and ruthlessly brutal of human blood sports.

Politics – The art of manipulating people. This definition can be infinitely refined and redefined but those five words are its essence. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

The Independent Institute
Recession and Recovery
Six Fundamental Errors of the Current Orthodoxy

Robert Higgs

As the recession has deepened and the financial debacle has passed from one flare-up to another during the past seven or eight months, commentary on the economy’s troubles has swelled tremendously. Pundits have pontificated; journalists and editors have reported and opined; talk-radio jocks have huffed and puffed; public officials have spewed out even more double-talk than usual; awkward academic experts, caught in the camera’s glare like deer in the headlights, have blinked and stumbled through their brief stints as talking heads on TV. We’ve been deluged by an enormous outpouring of diagnosis, prognosis, and prescription, at least ninety-five percent of which has been appallingly bad.

The bulk of it has been bad for the same reasons. Most of the people who purport to possess expertise about the economy rely on a common set of presuppositions and modes of thinking. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

The Future of Freedom Foundation
Obama’s Uninformed Optimism
by Sheldon Richman

President Obama is optimistic that “We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.” That and $5 will get you coffee at Starbucks — until inflation kicks in.

In his appearance before Congress, Obama demonstrated he can give a speech. Big deal. We already knew that. Theatrics aside, why does it matter that the president is optimistic? He shows no sign of understanding economics. He’s the one, after all, who proposes to borrow $800 billion in the credit market so he can “inject” it into the economy where he found it. That doesn’t show much understanding. So on what does he base his optimism? (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Beating Back Obamanomics
By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

It's raining, pouring, economic fallacies by the hour, followed by a flood of horrible policy that is driving us ever further into economic depression. The regime in charge has really gone nuts, revealing itself as both deeply ignorant and horribly evil.

We find ourselves facing the horror of what has always been the Achilles heel of the left wing: its abysmal ignorance of economic science. The ideological tendency has gone from Keynesianism to outright socialism in a matter of a few weeks. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Do you have friends or family who aren't quite sure about this Second Amendment business? Of course you do, we all do. My friend Aaron Zelman at Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership has produced a wonderful video that is one of the best presentations on the right to keep and bear arms I've come across, and I've come across my share.
