Libertarian Commentary on The News 01 - 07 February, 2009
By Nathan A. Barton © 2009

Well, we made it through the month of January, 2009: just 35 more months to go to that big "End of the World in 2012" event. Visiting a bookstore recently, one of my sons and I were surprised to see all the books out about the coming end of (check one or more: __ civilization, __ Western Civilization, __ world, __ Solar System, __ humanity (as in "mankind"), __ America, __ Gringo-land, __ The West, __ capitalism, __ our economy, __ Other: ____). Everyone is supposed to be hyper about it. Maybe. Meanwhile, some of us wonder if we can LAST the 35 months or if things will just fall apart a wee bit more quickly than that.

Monday (D+12):
Crash of 2009:
Frugal Americans hurt economic recovery
What's good for individuals -- spending less, saving more -- is bad for the economy when everyone does it. On Friday, the government reported Americans' savings rate, as a percentage of after-tax incomes, rose to 2.9 percent in the last three months of 2008. That's up sharply from 1.2 percent in the third quarter and less than 1 percent a year ago. Like a teeter-totter, when the savings rate rises, spending falls. The latter accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity. When consumers refuse to spend, companies cut back, layoffs rise, people pinch pennies even more and the recession deepens.

Ah, the common wisdom. Shucks, all those bills I paid off last week probably were the economy's deathblow. Funny, I guess I was wrong to pay people just because the people I work for paid me...

Mama's Note: If you don't understand why savings and frugal living are good for the economy in the long run, read a von Mises article about the "Broken Window Fallacy." (Read the rest here)

Liberty Bookself - Review
A Nation of Cowards
by Jeffrey R. Snyder

OUR SOCIETY has reached a pinnacle of self-expression and respect for individuality rare or unmatched in history. Our entire popular culture -- from fashion magazines to the cinema -- positively screams the matchless worth of the individual, and glories in eccentricity, nonconformity, independent judgment, and self-determination.

Its enthusiasm is reflected in the prevalent notion that helping someone entails increasing that person's "self-esteem"; that if a person properly values himself, he will naturally be a happy, productive, and, in some inexplicable fashion, responsible member of society.

And yet, while people are encouraged to revel in their individuality and incalculable self- worth, the media and the law enforcement establishment continually advise us that, when confronted with the threat of lethal violence, we should not resist, but simply give the attacker what he wants. If the crime under consideration is rape, there is some notable waffling on this point, and the discussion quickly moves to how the woman can change her behavior to minimize the risk of rape, and the various ridiculous, non-lethal weapons she may acceptably carry, such as whistles, keys, mace or, that weapon which really sends shivers down a rapist's spine, the portable cellular phone. The Federal Government is using the
General Welfare Clause to Steal your Money

By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

Many Americans believe the Sixteenth Amendment, the so-called income tax Amendment, is the constitutional provision that allows the federal government to impose taxes on the people of the several States. This is not the case. The Sixteenth Amendment has nothing to do with the federal government's power to impose taxes. [The 16th Amendment is not the Source of the Federal Income Tax] In fact, every federal tax, including income and social security taxes, originate from a provision in the Constitution commonly known as the "general welfare clause." This provision, which is found at Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the Constitution, grants Congress the power "[t]o lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States..." Ladies, Want Job Security? Just Scream ‘Abuse!’
By Carey Roberts

As lawmakers tediously debate the economic stimulus plan, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard of California is pushing for change that we can really believe in. It’s called the Security and Financial Empowerment Act – SAFE for short – a bill that she and Rep. Ted Poe of Texas introduced in the Congress this past week.

The concept is so simple, it’s amazing no one dreamed this up before.

Here’s how it works: All you have to do is trot down to the local courthouse and convince the judge your husband or boyfriend did something that caused “substantial emotional distress or psychological trauma” – those are the words from the SAFE bill. (Read the rest here)

Who Would the State Arm?
by Michael Gaddy

As expected, the Republican Senate leadership sold supporters of the Second Amendment down the river in a, you cover my crimes against the Constitution, I’ll cover yours, agreement to confirm Eric Holder as Attorney General. The agreement was reportedly reached when Holder agreed to not seek criminal charges against agents of the state (CIA etc.) who participated in the torture of suspected terrorists at Gitmo.

Holder has a long history of opposition to the Second Amendment; he supports federal licensing of handgun owners, rationing gun sales, national gun registration, notifying the BATFE of every firearms purchase, and denying firearms purchases to anyone who might find their way on to any secret government "watch list." The new blacklist
by David Codrea

A Wisconsin middle school teacher has been suspended. Her grave offense against acceptable norms?

[S]chool officials discovered a photo of her with a gun on Facebook.

I know she's quoted in the story as not being "interested in any controversy," but the controversy--manufactured by public officials--shows people who can deny her a livelihood are interested in her--and letting them get away with it affects all our interests. Prosecute Bush? Good luck!
by Garry Reed

Prosecute Bush? Former President George Walker Bush? Forty-three? For illegal acts? Like violations of the Constitution type illegal acts? Are you kidding? Impeachment is one thing. It’s what one political party does to the guy of the other political party. It’s rare, but it’s still just politics. But prosecution? An actual trial with judge and jury and witnesses and prosecuting attorneys and defense lawyers and banging of gavels on wooden gavel-bangers type Judicial Branch prosecution?

Never happen. That’s a can of worms no BigGov operative would ever open. Because once opened the worms will wiggle all over everyone, including the opener of the can.

The Independent Institute
China-Bashing
By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—Several Chinese readers have contacted me to express astonishment at the chorus of voices blaming China for the U.S. recession. They wonder: Is this the preamble of a protectionist backlash?

There is plenty that China deserves to be bashed for—its political system and its backing of Sudan and Zimbabwe, for instance—but not the U.S. recession. Yet although it is hard to see how China-bashing would translate into protectionism when Washington needs Beijing’s financial help, one should never underestimate people’s capacity to self-inflict damage in times of panic. The “buy American” provision barring the use of foreign steel and iron in the economic stimulus package approved by the U.S. House of Representatives is a stark reminder.

China-bashers maintain that Beijing cheapened its exports through currency manipulation, encouraging Americans to devour them; the Chinese then invested part of that money and other savings in U.S. assets, prompting the drop in interest rates that in turn fueled the housing bubble. With variations, this view is shared by the previous and the current secretaries of the Treasury, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, some members of Congress, not to mention some well-known commentators. They claim that the U.S. has been spending too much because China has been saving too much (I kid you not!). (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. "Do You Austrians Have a Better Idea?"
by Robert P. Murphy

A lot of people get annoyed with Austrian economists because they tend to be so dogmatic (we prefer the term consistent) and because they cloak their strictly economic claims with self-righteousness (we prefer the term morality). After a good Austrian bashing of the latest call to steal taxpayer money and waste it on something that will make a given problem worse, the stumped critics will often shout, "Oh yeah? Well do you guys have a better idea?"

Now, in truth, someone doesn't have to have a better suggestion in order to point out that a recommended strategy will exacerbate the situation. If an allergic man has been stung by a bee, I don't know what to do except rush him to the hospital and maybe scour the cupboards looking for Benadryl. But I'm pretty sure drawing blood from his leg, in order to inject it into his arm and thus "stimulate his immune system," is a bad idea on numerous accounts — not least of which, is that I'm pretty sure an allergic reaction means your immune system needs to calm down. But the point is, if a bunch of guys hold the man down — he has to be forced to endure the procedure for his own good, don't you know — I feel perfectly qualified in yelling, "Stop!"
