Countdown to Tyranny (D-14)
One last week, and the future looks more bleak than ever. The republic is long dead, it seems, and even its ghost, the decaying undead shade called "democracy" is fading fast. And around the world, the war of Islam against all civilization is growing, while all the other wars continue, seemingly unabated.

Unnews: bad commentary:
Six reasons why nuclear power can’t save us
AlterNet
by Rob Hopkins
“Nuclear waste is a huge problem. The UK alone has 10,000 tons of nuclear waste, a pile which will increase 25-fold when the existing plants are decommissioned, with no solution in sight other than deep burial. The disposal of nuclear waste requires a great deal of embodied energy, including that in the materials used to maintain the disposal facilities (i.e. concrete and steel). It is often said that nuclear waste has a half-life of 100,000 years … it is worth remembering that Stonehenge was built only 4,000 years ago.” (01/03/09)

Once again, AlterNet demonstrates that its writers and editors are more concerned about political correctness and their religions (environism, etc.) than they are about the truth. The "10,000 tons" is an exaggeration, as it includes large amounts of low-level radioactive material that is probably less radioactive than the surface soils around uranium deposits. And frankly, most of the stuff isn't "waste" - there are many uses, profitable uses, for the materials. But the fear of nukes prevents most of those uses. Indeed, it is this fear of nukes and of giving terrorists more toys to play with that prevents research to find more uses for this stuff. AlterNet is not part of the solution, it is part of the problem. (Read the rest here)

Real Letter From CEO To His Employees
By Michael A. Crowley

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job.

What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country. Of course, as your employer, I am forbidden to tell you whom to vote for -- it is against the law to discriminate based on political affiliation, Race, creed, religion, etc.

The Dangers of Disputing Warming Orthodoxy
by David Gordon

A nagging doubt remains. What if, however unlikely, the alarmists turn out to be right? Horner deploys in this connection what Herbert Hoover would have called a "powerful statistic": there is little that we can do to lower world temperatures. If all nations fully adhered to the guidelines of the Kyoto Protocol, this would have but a minute effect.

As Pat Michaels' World Climate blog summed it up: "…the amount of future global warming that would be 'saved' would amount to about 0.07°C by the year 2050 and 0.15°C by 2100." That amount of warming delayed for a few years at such tremendous cost is actually too small for scientists to distinguish from the "noise" of inter-annual temperature variability. (p. 249)

Measures to curb global warming cannot succeed, but they can do much harm. It is Horner's great merit to have called our attention to a real danger — not global warming, but the measures that global-warming alarmists wish to inflict on us. Holder first squall in an approaching storm
by David Codrea - Gun Rights Examiner

I've done what I can, both here and at The War on Guns, to alert readers to the danger of an attorney general who opposes private gun ownership. In the past week, we've explored:

Why Holder is a danger to gun owners

Why Holder is a danger to non-gun owners

Immediate and simple action YOU can take to oppose Holder's confirmation

Holder's scary position on your right to a legal defense

The shoe as politics
by Garry Reed

In early January several thousand demonstrators protesting Israel's bombardment and invasion of Gaza marched past the Prime Minister's Downing Street residence in London, and several hundred of them threw shoes at the dwelling's gate.

This was, of course, a direct manifestation of the shoe chucking as political protest made popular recently by an Iraqi journalist who unshod himself and flung his personal footwear at the face of President Bush during a photo op in Baghdad. Gun-Proof Kids
by Scott McPherson

Several years ago I read Gun-Proof Your Children by Massad Ayoob, an excellent short primer on introducing children to firearms and how best to maintain a safe household that has both children and guns in it. Ayoob’s premise is simple: the best way to protect your child from drowning is to teach him to swim, familiarize him with water, and give him plenty of adult supervision in the pool — and that the best way to keep kids safe around guns is to follow the same course. Terrible Credit Crunch of 2008—The Greatest Hoax of All Time?
Robert Higgs

Remember the credit crunch? Of course, you do. We’d never seen anything like it, or so the highest financial authorities and their lapdogs in the news media told us—not in a cool, calm, and collected way, either, but in a breathless delivery that suggested imminent economic doom unless the government immediately undertook to “do something”. Which it did, of course, on a scale never before witnessed in U.S. history.

So, looking back, as people are prone to do at this time of year, we can clearly see the telltale signs of the financial disaster that struck the financial markets last autumn: the terrible credit crunch, the “frozen credit” that portended a complete “economic meltdown” unless the government took drastic measures to head it off. (The government spokespersons and the media’s talking heads never got straight whether the thing was very cold or very hot, as they reached for horrifying metaphors in all directions at once.) JPFO ALERT: JPFO ANNOUNCES "GOODY GUNS" FOR KIDS

More from David Codrea:
Do you have friends or family who aren't quite sure about this Second Amendment business? Of course you do, we all do. My friend Aaron Zelman at Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership has produced a wonderful video that is one of the best presentations on the right to keep and bear arms I've come across, and I've come across my share. You can read my review here.

But more importantly, watch it yourself--it's a free download. Then go out and share this great educational tool with those close to you. Let's all help spread the word.
