29, 2008 Countdown to Tyranny (Day D-30): One last month of Mr. Bush and his clowns, to be replaced by Mr. Obama, whose own set of clowns is eerily reminiscent of the Jokers' gang - and now that I think about it, the Massa-in-waiting has some definite similarity (to the traditional Joker of the comics, not Ledger's interpretation in the movie) to the Clown Prince of crime. In the meantime, we can all enjoy one more Christmas season; both those of us who celebrate it as a family holiday and those who honor it as a religious festival. However, we can expect the battle against Christmas (part of the Culture War) to be equipped with hyperdrive in 2009. So enjoy it now. For those who celebrate Hannukah (and those who don't know what it is), let me urge you to visit JPFO and read their holiday greeting. It is no accident of timing and the calendar that Hannukah has become a more important Jewish holiday in the United States than anywhere else. (Read the rest here)

Articles "We no longer have a civilian-led government." This ominous conclusion comes to us from Thomas A. Schweich, who held the title of deputy assistant secretary of state for international law enforcement affairs in the Bush Regime, by way of a December 21 Washington Post op-ed column. Lamenting "the silent military coup detat that has been steadily gaining ground below the radar screen of most Americans and the media," Schweich describes the infusion of the military "into a striking number of aspects of civilian government" as "the most unnerving legacy of the Bush administration." A
wanted man and 'a true success story' A fugitive is loose among us, 36-year-old Michael Wells: He is wanted for failing to appear in court on a firearm charge. His criminal history includes aggravated burglary, aggravated trafficking in cocaine, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and numerous probation violations. I question if that's the only outstanding charge against him, and if the rest of his record has been resolved with sentences already served. Why? Surely I'm not suggesting that criminals should not be prohibited from possessing guns? Here's what I'm suggesting--actually, I'm flat out maintaining it: Anyone who can't be trusted with a gun can't be trusted without a custodian. Stupid
Politician Tricks: worst of 2008 Everyone who reads above the comic book level knows about Illinois Gov Rod Blagojevich, accused of trying to sell Prez-elect Obama's vacated senate seat to the highest bidder. Everyone who reads above the Hustler magazine level knows about New York Gov Eliot Spitzer, who admitted to having multiple trysts with a $5,500 per hour hooker. What many, even those who read above the Mad magazine level, don't seem to get is that this sort of thing goes on all the time in politics. What amazes libertarians is why anyone could ever think of making politicians into heroes. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
The
Future of Freedom Foundation Contrary to Rutten, whose prejudice against individual choice and free markets is palpable, these two facts sophisticated victims and pervasive regulation demonstrate the failure not of the free market (which did not exist) but rather of regulation. How can that be? Begin the obvious: a false sense of security is worse than none at all. When people believe government is protecting them from bad financial services, they are more vulnerable to scams than if they knew they had to protect themselves. The governments huge regulatory apparatus broadcasts one unmistakable subliminal message: Have no fear because Big Brother is watching over you. Is it any wonder that people are less wary than they would be if they did not believe that? (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
The
Independent Institute The National Bureau of Economic Research has officially confirmed what everyone already knew: The U.S. economy has been in recession for many months. The question now is whether anything constructive can be done about it. Historically there have been two very different public policy responses to a serious economic slowdown. The firstlaissez-faireis simply to allow market prices to adjust to the new economic reality. Since most economic slumps are caused by a decline in demand associated with the bursting of a credit/money bubble, prices tend to adjust downward fairly rapidly. We have seen some of this in the current crisis with real estate, stock and commodity prices (especially crude oil) falling dramatically. This falling price process tends to clear out the malinvestments of the credit boom and eventually sets the stage for a sustainable economic recovery. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute A high-school calculus teacher scored a victory for capitalism and dealt socialized education quite a blow this year. A recent article in USA Today reported that Tom Farber had devised a brilliant, free-market way of funding the tests that he felt were necessary for his students. Mr. Farber was faced with a dilemma felt by teachers across the country. His supplies budget was cut by the district, which meant that if Farber wanted to give his students the much-needed practice tests that would prepare them for later placement tests, he would have to find funding elsewhere. Many teachers either would have paid for the additional expense out of their own pocket or deprived their students of the requisite practice tests. Farber estimated that, had he paid for the copies out of pocket, it would have cost him almost $200. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
