Libertarian Commentary on The News 02 - 08 November, 2008
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Defenders of liberty:
Marshall Fritz, 1943-2008
Advocates for Self-Government
“Marshall Fritz, the legendary and beloved libertarian leader who founded the Advocates for Self-Government and created the world-famous World’s Smallest Political Quiz, has passed away. Marshall died peacefully at home Tuesday, November 4, 2008, after a months-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 65. Marshall founded the Advocates in 1985 to help libertarians become successful communicators of the ideas of liberty.” (11/04/08)

Marshall was a spectacular star in every way; he will be missed.

Mama's Note: Marshall was a personal friend, and was my mentor in the early days of my liberty journey. I will miss him terribly. Rest in the Peace of God, old friend.

Veterans Day, 2008
By Nathan A. Barton (TM and © 2008)

Today’s veterans did not march through Georgia, they did not scream that nits make lice and burn whole villages, they did not fire-bomb cities nor murder and hide the bodies of civilians. They have served, in Korea, in Vietnam, in Lebanon and Somalia and Honduras and Haiti and Dominica and the Sinai and Bosnia and now Afghanistan and Mesopotamia, in the sincere and honest belief that (despite the evils of politicians and enemies and contractors and Wall Street) that their service is in the cause of not just independence, but liberty and freedom for both Americans and for those in the lands that they serve in. Ultimately, if we do not remember and do not honor the men and women who now (and have for more than 30 years) volunteer completely to serve the cause of liberty, as expressed in their oath to “defend and protect the Constitution of these united States,” and do not recognize that they, as much or more than the vast bulk of the population, understand and respect and honor the liberties which our Constitution was created to preserve, then we shall get armies like those of the European and Asian and Latin American powers have had for centuries. Armies that oppress their own people first, and then those of other lands. Armies that support and are loyal to leaders, to factions, and NOT to ideals and liberty and freedom and independence. Do we want that? (Read the rest here)

Bush's False Flag Finale? (A Vigilant Shield Alert Update)
By Maj. William B. Fox
And Captain Eric H. May - Military-Political Editor

Former Naval Intelligence Officer Wayne Madsen reported on 6 Nov that "Questions about Emanuel's links to the Israeli intelligence service, the Mossad, were allegedly so great that President Bill Clinton was forced to dismiss Emanuel from the White House staff in 1998... [the Wayne Madsen Report] has learned from U.S. intelligence sources that Emanuel was discovered to be part of a political intelligence and blackmail operation directed against Clinton by Israel's Likud Party and Binyamin Netanyahu to sink Clinton's proposed Middle East peace deal." (9)

With another false flag attack, likely again aided by Israel and its U.S. sympathizers, the Bush cabal would finally get what it has always wanted: a second 9-11. This would allow it to attack Iran, install martial law in America, and clamp down on its "domestic enemies" such as anti-Zionists and the 9/11 Truth Movement. This would also prevent war crime trials while re-energizing the global war abroad and the police state at home. (Read the rest here)

Resolve
by Mike Vanderboegh

An old friend of mine called me the other day to report that an FBI agent in the west had confessed his fears at church last Sunday. Obama, he worried aloud, was going to shove him and his agency where he did not wish to go. They were, he feared, "entering the grey zone." Now there is more than one way to interpret those words, but he made one thing explicit. He had zero interest in dying for the cause of gun confiscation. No doubt such thoughts are flickering through many minds in the federal law enforcement bureaucracy at this moment.

This is something for us Three Percenters to keep in mind. He fears the scenario of my novel "Absolved."

Now the war begins
By Nathan A. Barton (TM and © 2008)

Obama will not govern from the "center" - the new triumvirate of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi will govern as far left as possible - and many of their supporters and voters will not be able to stomach it, to say nothing of the rest of us. Whether we want to or not, the United States is going to become part of the New World Order, the Tranzi (Transnational Socialist) movement. Under their heavy, ideologically-driven hand, government will quickly become even MORE of a nightmare. BUT! Their actions will drive more and more people to see that government is the problem, not the solution. And we have modern tools of communication AND resistance that no one had during the Revolutions, during the New Deal, or even during the Great Society. The info war is one that we, lovers of liberty, can WIN. And perhaps not even with guns or other weapons - although as soon as the enemies of freedom realize we ARE winning, then we must be prepared to defend ourselves from them and those that they have blinded or coerced into following them. Election 2008: Deja Vu Repeats Itself All Over Again
By Doug Newman

"The ignorant Christians in this nation are to blame more than anyone. They believe just being a Republican makes one good and well in the eyes of the Lord. Hosea 4:6 applies to each and every one of you.

"You have been blinded and you are to blame for the demise of our nation as you attend your churches that sit silent in the face of evil and embrace the destruction of every God-given Right and the killing of innocent civilians around the world in Biblically unjust wars all perpetrated by Republicans."

"Each and every one of you deserves Obama as president. You have sat silent while every vestige of liberty has been destroyed and dictatorial power has been given to Bush. Well guess what my blind friends? That power is now in the hands of Obama. You will now reap what you've sown. Enjoy. Do I sound angry? Damn Right I'm angry. Angry at ignorant and apathetic --men--who would have Fox News tell them what to think rather than use their own God-given sense." (Read the rest here)

A Tenth Amendment Commission is not the Answer
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

While I totally agree with Boortz's goal, a Tenth Amendment Commission is not the answer because the federal government is using clauses in the body of the Constitution to nullify the principle enumerated in the Amendment. Thus, the Tenth Amendment cannot be invoked to prevent the federal government from exercising the powers Boortz wants returned to the States.

When the Constitution was adopted, it established a federal government of limited enumerated powers. Under this system of government, every power not granted is denied. Even though the Constitution was founded on this principle, it was feared the federal government would eventually attempt to circumvent this system of government and exercise powers not granted. As a result, it was proposed to add an amendment to the Constitution to set this principle in stone. [Note: even if the Tenth Amendment had not been added or was removed, the principle that it recognizes would not be diminished because the Amendment is not the source of the principle. The Amendment was intended to be a secondary restraint on federal power]. (Read the rest here)

The people have spoken
By David Codrea

Across the nation, gun sales are up. The cause is attributed to fear over what new citizen disarmament edicts a Barack Obama presidency will bring. And Cleveland is no different. Per WKYC-TV:

Gun shop owner Diane Donnett says politics and fear of property crimes in an uncertain economy are two reasons her handgun sales are up 10 to 15 percent over last year...

In Cuyahoga County the number of conceal carry permit applications is up 25 percent over all of last year.

"People are worried. People are worried about their rights to own guns being taken away from them," Donnett said. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Welcome to Change, just like the old Change
By Garry Reed

From a libertarian standpoint, nothing ever really changes, no matter who the president is or which party is in control. Government just keeps getting bigger, more expensive, more coercive, more intrusive, more hostile toward our freedoms and our rights, and generally more ugly and burdensome in every way.

It happened under Bush. It will happen under Obama. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

I Didn't Vote!
by David Bardallis

Being a principled nonvoter on Election Day is a little like being a turd in the punchbowl. At least that's how all the people running around yesterday blissfully participating in the American civic religion of statism viewed it: I'm some sort of a downer, a crank, a loonie, a jerk.

Hooray for Obama!
by Larken Rose

Hooray for Obama!
I must admit, I'm a little bit happy about Obama winning the election. No, it's not because I'm all googly-eyed over his message, or because I think he's the country's salvation. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm glad he won, because I think it will speed up, if only by a tiny fraction, the demise of the United States empire. Good riddance. No, the Government Can’t
by Sheldon Richman

Barack Obama will assume the presidency on a wave of hope among millions of Americans that he will deliver on promises that countless politicians have made before him. Rising above partisanship and committed to solving long-festering problems, Obama will inspire and unify the American people and, as a result, move the crusty Washington political apparatus to at long last serve the interests of all. Is a “Resurgent” Russia a Threat to the United States?
Ivan Eland

The Russian military was clearly superior to that of a small country in its “near abroad”—Georgia—but is a “resurgent” Russia a threat to the United States? If the United States insists on expanding its informal empire into Russia’s nearby sphere of influence, it has to expect some pushback from a Russia that is no longer as weak as it once was and is resentful at having been trampled on during the 1990s and early 2000s. Markets Need Time, Not More Poison
by Robert P. Murphy

I realize the WSJ is in the business of selling newspapers, and that calling injections of Fed funny money "medicine" is a catchy opening. But if our present crisis is the result of prior injections of artificial credit, then the medicine is in fact arsenic. What is especially ironic is that this very article later on alludes to the possibility that the housing boom was fueled by Greenspan's low rates. In any event, the most recent Fed cut was largely symbolic, since the actual fed funds rate (as opposed to the official "target" set by the Fed) had already been below 1 percent for some time: (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
