Libertarian Commentary on The News 21 - 27 September
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

This week is the week of economic crisis for the nation and the world - and people are panicked like it is the end of the world. I admit, the amount of money is pretty staggering. Here is a summary I put together:

BEAR STERNS $ 29B
FREDDIE/FANNIE $200B
AIG $ 85B
"Bank" Credit package $150B
Money Market obligation $ 50B
Proposed "RESCUE" $700B
TOTAL $1.200 TRILLION in basically a MONTH!]

Congressman Ron Paul reports that in the last three years, the Federal Reserve has created over $4 trillion in new money. The result of all this "money-out-of-thin-air" fraud is never-ending inflation. This new $1+ trillion just makes it that much worse.

Of course, the NORMAL Federal budget is enough to gag a maggot: it is running just shy of $1T EVERY YEAR. That amounts to $3,333.00 for every single man, woman, and child, in the country, each year. Of course, since about half the population doesn't pay any income tax, that is really $6,666 on average: try sucking THAT out of a $24,000/year income, not counting local and state taxes. Why Do I Need To Defend Myself?
By Susan Callaway, Editor

We read about home invasions, robberies, carjackings, rapes and murders all the time. Did any of those criminals make an appointment with the victim or give some "fair warning" of their intentions? Of course, not. What a silly idea.

So then, each and every victim was surprised, unprepared for the attack? Not all of them. We read many accounts (though not enough of them make it to the media circus) of people who fight off their attackers, often with deadly force. And, amazingly, many of them are successful in eliminating both the threat and the criminal.

Sadly, just as often we read about those who were overcome by the criminals, usually because they had no realistic way to defend themselves to start with, or were ineffective using whatever tools they did have. (Read the rest here)

Dead Man's Holler
by Mike Vanderboegh

Charlie had told them the truth. There were no firearms on the place. They did find his personal hunting knife and a half-dozen others in various stages of manufacture. They found his traditional bow and a quiver full of flint-tipped arrows. They tipped over his flint napping table and scattered his flints and tools across the greatroom floor. They found his tomahawk, emblazoned with the signs of his clan and tribe, for Charlie Quintard was three-quarter Cherokee.

They found, and threw to the floor, his many books on the early history of Alabama, Indian lore and primitive weapons and survival skills. They searched though his bulk foods that he kept in 5 gallon plastic pails, ruining some of it and spilling more. And then they found his medicine bag. (Read the rest here)

Politicalspeak 101
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Since politics has become a year-round hunt with no definable season, this article is offered as a public service for those who want to become political sharpshooters but aren't completely familiar with the vocabulary of this most ancient and ruthlessly brutal of human blood sports.

Politics – The art of manipulating people. This definition can be infinitely refined and redefined but those five words are its essence. (Read the rest here)

Politically Incorrect Movie Reviews
The Dark Knight
By RadioFree Rocky D

What’s with all the pouty, angry, billionaires these days? Ted Kennedy, John Edwards, Martha Stewart … Bruce Wayne. You’d think with all that dough, they’d find something to be happy about (well, okay; scotch seems to make Ted temporarily happy and Edwards likes chasing skanky women). Heck, I’m happy when I get grilled grouper for lunch at the Crab Shack or a salad at Parson Jack’s. So far Hollyweird has made eight Batman flicks, and The Dark Knight is the moodiest and broodiest of them all. You’d think a bachelor would be happy with expensive toys, babes in abundance and all the friends money can buy; but no – this is the new millennium Batman, where one must find one’s self before one opens up one’s can of whoop-ass; and where the Batmobile is now a BSUV (Bat-Suburban-Utility-Vehicle). This begs the question: When did Batman become an angry soccer mom? (Read the rest here)

SafeNet Shelter Director Ordered to Stay Away from Kids
By Carey Roberts

What happens when an abuse shelter engages in conduct that is so unethical and bizarre that the public almost can't believe the magnitude of the travesty? Read on and decide for yourself.

Crystal D. Hall of McIntosh County, Okla. was the wife of James Hall and the mother of five. She also had a severe mental illness that required her to take anti-psychotic medications.

Sometime in mid-2005 Mrs. Hall became convinced that she and the children were being emotionally abused by James. In July of that year, Crystal's family had her admitted to a local mental health facility. And the state Department of Human Services took custody of the children. (Read the rest here)

Monsters Incorporated
by Rick Fisk

Secretary of the Treasury Paulson wants Congress to deliver him dictatorial powers over all things financial. Not only does he not want any agency oversight, he doesn't want any judicial oversight. Hmmmmmm.... Now why in the world would he want that, if his interest was your financial well-being?

Let's see. Perhaps, the provision in the AIG bailout, the one which gives investment firms the power to raid their customer's portfolios (must register) in order to raise capital for themselves could cause a few lawsuits. People objecting to outright thievery do not help to make the fascist wheels turn. Perhaps, if the Secretary were to send out treasury agents to seize the property of average citizens to pay the debts this government has incurred on their behalf, his plans could be thwarted. Were some federal judge to get religion and rule in favor of some poor citizen, it would make things too messy. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Fraud of Global Warming
by Floy Lilley

It is fraud to spread alarmism of catastrophic "human-caused global warming" based upon projections generated from computer climate models which have substantial uncertainties and are markedly unreliable. It is fraud upon fraud to throw scarce resources at Global Warming when such expenditures will have inconsequential results except to impoverish us, notwithstanding that Al Gore believes it will be good for our spirituality to work together on such a common cause. There are real and achievable global causes of diseases, malnutrition, sanitation and energy that are valid projects and worthy efforts – efforts that Bjørn Lomborg endorses in his book, Cool It. No global efforts toward expensive CO2 cuts are valid or worthy. Current Climate policies are health and wealth destruction policies. Doomsayers are claiming that climate can be adjusted in some predictable way, but it can not. It is fraud to claim that it can. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Milk Protectionism
by Gary D. Barnett

The headline recently in Missoula, Montana’s, daily newspaper, the Missoulian, was “Cheaper milk from Washington pulled from Missoula shelves.” Angry customers know this is obvious protectionism, but Montana milk producers say they only want a “safe” product for Montanans. Yeah, right!

Certain stores in Missoula on Friday were ordered to stop selling lower-priced milk from Washington State. They had written violations posted on their doors by state officials posing as milk regulators. One retailer compared these monkey-suit enforcers to the “milk Gestapo.” I would agree with this analogy. The reason for all this: Washington milk was selling for about $1.00 less per gallon than Montana milk. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Wall Street Socialism
Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—Having spent part of my life in the developing world, I know that the nationalization of an industry or an institution is an act of robbery perpetrated under the pretense of altruism—sort of like putting lipstick on a pig—and that the consequence is poverty. That is why I and thousands of Peruvians took to the streets in 1987 to protest the government’s attempt to nationalize the financial system. We prevailed, and the country was eventually able to begin its tortuous march toward modernization.

In arguing against nationalization, I often point to the United States as an example of prosperity brought about by a private enterprise economy in which, by and large, success and failure are not socialized. But after the takeover of major financial institutions by the U.S. government and the plan to buy Wall Street’s bad debt—to the tune of $700 billion-plus—I will have to eat my words. A Crisis of Global Statism
by Pierre Lemieux

The current financial turmoil is a "crisis of capitalism," said a spokesman for Britain's Socialist Workers Party, as good Marxists have been repeating for more than a century. "[A]n unregulated financial system is a disaster," echoed Sheila Rowbotham, professor of gender and labor history at Manchester University. Added a leftist London mayoral candidate, "Capitalism has had its chance and failed; now it's socialism's turn." (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. The S.W.A.T. Chronicles

A raid gone wrong
Time to rein in police SWAT teams

Ah, but it's so much easier and so much more fun to barrel into someone's house with big guns and storm trooper uniforms. The proliferation of SWAT deployments in this country is stunning, up from 3,000 a year in the mid-1980s to more than 40,000 now, according to Peter Kraske, who studies the militarization of policing as a criminal-justice professor at Eastern Kentucky University.

Kraske's studies detail the spread of SWAT teams even to small towns - 75 percent of communities with a population under 50,000 have squads, he found. He attributes the growth to federal grants that help outfit the teams, surplus military equipment given to local police by the Pentagon, and seizure laws that let police cash in or keep contraband found during raids.
