Libertarian Commentary on The News 07 - 13 September
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

According to some people, the big news this week was that the world DIDN'T come to an end; for others, it was that supposedly the GOP VP candidate WANTS the world to come to an end. And for others, it was just a normal week full of funny (strange, not necessary "haha" funny) events and weird people reactions. Let us start with the world being destroyed, or not as the case may be.

New religions: Luddism:
Meet “Evans the Atom,” who’ll end the world on Wednesday
Daily Mail [UK]
“The man behind the world’s biggest scientific experiment, which critics claim could cause the end of the world, is a Welsh miner’s son who has admitted blowing things up as a child. Dr. Lyn Evans, who has been dubbed Evans the Atom, will this week switch on a giant particle accelerator designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang. But the 63-year-old physicist revealed yesterday that his passion for science was fueled by the relatively small bangs he had created with his chemistry set at his council house in Aberdare in the Welsh valleys.” (09/07/08)

I am, as always, surprised at the incredible stupidity and ignorance exhibited both by the mainstream media and too many in the public. This attempt to “humanize” this endeavor makes it look like an irresponsible child making dynamite in his bedroom. Oppenheimer and those with in in 1943 and 1945 might have had some fear of triggering a catastrophic chain reaction, but today the science is much better known – except to the media. As the next story shows, the furor was for nought. (Read the rest here)

A Modest Proposal, or,
Heinlein Was Half Right About What Makes a Polite Society

By Kyle Bennett

Pop quiz time. What's the least obeyed law in the United States? It probably is the least obeyed law in any country, but lets stick with the US for now. Any idea? I'll give you a minute...

la la la la la.. I wish I was ndixeee, hrahh, rahh... boomp boomp a dooomp doomp... la la la...

OK, you thought about it? I bet you didn't come up with my answer. The least obeyed law in the country is... wait for it...

Deacon
by Mike Vanderboegh

He'd never get back to sleep now. Might as well get up.

As he did, his wife threw open the door and blurted out, "Bobby! Joe Baker says those two white boys from CORE is getting beat to death by the Klan down in front of Andrey's. He says meet him at Aunt Sylvie's right behind there as soon as you can." She paused, and then in fear for her husband moaned aloud, "Oh, Bobby."

Bobby Williams was awake instantly. They had planned for this, him and Joe and some of the men from the plant.

"Get my rifle and my clips from the front closet," he ordered and set about throwing on his clothes. (Read the rest here)

The Not So Supreme Court
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Our fatherly founders sought a different ideal: all three branches of the government tree would have equal bark concerning things Constitutional. Otherwise, the act of executive and legislative electees orating their oaths to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" become superfluous. Why bother if The Court has the last say anyway?

As Fatherly Founder and permanent resident of the US nickel Thom. Jefferson observed, "You seem to think that the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of constitutional interpretation, a very dangerous doctrine indeed and one that would place us under the tyranny of an oligarchy." Women Avoid Abuse Shelters Like the Plague
By Carey Roberts

Christina Wilson was caught in an abusive relationship, so last November she took refuge at the Cherokee Family Violence Center in Canton, Ga. She hoped the 12-bed shelter would help her mend the wounds and get her back on her feet.

Pregnant, with a child, she was assigned to a room with another woman who seldom bathed. And the room itself smelled. When the shelter wouldn't move her to another room, Wilson filed a complaint. (Read the rest here)

Secession 101
by William Buppert

I have discussed secession in two fictional conversations published on LRC prior to penning this one, and wanted to devote this essay to what secession is. The common definition is "[t]o withdraw formally from membership in an organization, association, or alliance." We seem to be of two minds on this in these united States: the War of Northern Aggression (1860–65) as portrayed in academia and the media paints a dark and malevolent picture of secession as a means to keep humans in bondage and sanctify evil deeds. As a revisionist historian, I have learned to take these assumptions with a grain of salt. Just look at the LRC King Lincoln archives for a dose of real history and not the mass-manufactured hagiographic state worship that passes for most history today. On the other hand, we are a nation birthed and mid-wifed through secession from England to establish our embryonic nation and expand across the continent. McCain’s Self-Righteous Fakery
by Sheldon Richman

If John McCain keeps up that self-righteous fakery about wanting to be our servant, we’re in for two rather tedious months until election day.

First of all, he also says he wants to be our leader. How can he be both our leader and our servant? We know what’s really going on here. The servant shtick is phony humility intended to soften us up. He has no intention of being our humble servant and every intention of being our know-it-all Great Leader, our commander in chief. The Independent Institute
The Jewel of Medina
Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—Gibson Square, a British publishing house, has announced that it will soon release “The Jewel of Medina,” a novel by American author Sherry Jones whose publication in the United States was recently canceled by Random House for fear of triggering violence by Islamic fanatics. Bravo.

Certainly this was not a case of censorship: no one has a “right” to be published by anyone else. But insofar as the business decision of the publisher was dictated by fear of retribution arising from past examples of reprisals against people perceived to have denigrated Islam, the implications went beyond the contractual relationship between Random House and Jones. Any time, any place in which the threat of violence inhibits the exercise of free expression, the imperfect freedoms of Western civilization that so many people around the world struggle to imitate are in danger. Which is why the implications of the British publisher’s audacious decision to print “The Jewel of Medina” also go beyond the contract between Gibson Square and Jones. America's Economic Myths
by David Saied

Mainstream economists and so-called experts have filled the minds of most Americans with many economic myths that are constantly reinforced by the media and repeated on the streets. These myths are erroneous at best, sometimes based on half truths. The majority of them are just false. We read and hear them every day: "inflation" is caused by rising oil prices; consumption is the most important element for economic growth; low interest rates are helpful to the economy; government expenditures help "stimulate" the economy; there is an energy "crisis," and many others. We will examine the most common ones and proceed to explain the reality behind these myths. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
