Libertarian Commentary on The News 16 - 23 August
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Will this election ever get here? At least gas prices seem to be dropped, as do deaths in Afghanistan and Mesopotamia, although Muslims are killing each other in a lot of the rest of the world. Georgia hasn’t turned into WW3, and we haven’t lost all freedoms – yet. But we had the first big snow in the High Country in Colorado, and we are still getting rains and sprinkles in the lower elevations there and to the north: no global warming yet!

Afghan front:
Afghanistan: Suicide bombers assault US base
Reuters
“A wave of Taliban suicide bombers and gunmen attempted to attack the main U.S. base in southeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday but were repelled by ground troops and attack helicopters, NATO-led forces said. Troops from NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) killed seven of the insurgents, six of them suicide bombers, after they spotted them preparing to attack some 1,000 meters (yards) from the base. … A suicide car bomber rammed the gates of the same base, close to the border with Pakistan, on Monday killing 10 Afghan civilians and wounded 13 more.” (08/19/08)

If this sounds like a Viet Cong attack on an American or RVN base in the Highlands, it is only because it is – except even Charlie was not quite so casual about throwing his life away (Communism just doesn’t have as good an afterlife plan as Islam, you know… no virgins, for one thing). Like early 1970s South Vietnam, it will not be attacks like this that defeat the U.S. forces – it will be a political operation, mostly in the USA itself and in “allied” capitals.

Mama's Note: Just curious... how do they know a "suicide bomber" ahead of time? Those folks wearing their bombs on the outside of their clothing now? (Read the rest here)

BLACK-AND-TANS
by Mike Vanderboegh

"It was inevitable that the administration would turn to what they called 'private contractors' after the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and subordinate military commanders informed the President that the Army and Marines would be unreliable to carry out Operation Clean Sweep. Even the wholesale replacement of senior officers in the Pentagon could not induce the majority of U.S. soldiers to enforce the draconian laws passed after the Battle of Sipsey Street. The administration came to realize that the most they could count on was that the military would stay on the sidelines and not turn on THEM as "domestic enemies" of the Constitution. . . . Using 'contractors' however had other benefits. They could (and would) be used by the administration for the 'plausible deniability' of some actions against the rebels and their families which were not even covered by the new laws. In addition, from a bureaucratic point of view, the means of their procurement was familiar and time-tested. Finally, using 'contractors' enabled the administration to hire men who were, frankly, criminals -- men who could never have passed the background checks required for the military or federal law enforcement. Absent the Army and Marines, the administration desperately needed bodies to carry out Operation Clean Sweep. The 'contractors' made that possible, or so it was thought." -- Dr. Herbert Matthews, Restoration or Rebellion?, LSU Press, 2029, p. 56. [Fiction - ML] (Read the rest here)

Is Obama Ineligible to be President?
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

Last Thursday, one week before Barack Obama is scheduled to give his acceptance speech as the Democratic candidate for president of the United States, Philip Berg, a prominent attorney and Hillary Clinton supporter, filed suit in federal court claiming Obama is constitutionally ineligible for the presidency.

An article by Jeff Schreiber states in part: (Read the rest here)

MID-SUMMER ALERT -UPDATE - 08/08/08 to 8/28/2008 -
By Captain Eric H. May - Military-Political Editor

Very Strange Timing for Little Georgia to Attack the Big Bear

Lt.Col. Guy Razer
In our July 18 Mid-Summer Alert, we warned about military exercises with the potential to go "live" in the form of a false flag event in the late July/early August time frame. We described "Immediate Response 2008," which ran for three weeks beginning in mid-July and involved a thousand American troops training in the nation of Georgia.

We believe that part of this exercise actually went "live." According to the Aug. 15-17 Wayne Madsen Report, "United States and British signals intelligence (SIGINT) intercepts of Caucasus region communications.reveal that Georgia was involved in a sneak attack on the evening of Aug. 8 against South Ossetia and its Russian peacekeepers." Georgia opened up with indiscriminate rocket salvos against civilians inside the Russian protectorate of Ossetia, followed by invasion troops on the same day that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Bush attended the opening of the Chinese Olympics. The Conservative's Socially Suitable Syllabus
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Having recently released a piece called The Collectivist's Culturally Correct Curriculum, and noting the utter absence of public outcry for a similar scenario for the putative "other side," it was a natural reaction to produce The Conservative's Socially Suitable Syllabus.

Our President was the inspiration for this presentation. Pundits with a keener eye than I have noted the following Bushism: His Presidentness wants creationism taught in schools because he believes in Intelligent Design over Evolution, yet he wants the power to deploy the military if the bird flu virus evolves to the point of infecting humans. People are intelligently designed, it seems, but viruses evolve. Inconsistencies and anomalies make it just as hard to hold onto a wiggly ism like Conservatism as it does to make sense of today's Modern Liberalism. (Read the rest here)

No Room for Men at the Abuse Shelter, but Fido can Tag Along
By Carey Roberts

Some people find it incomprehensible that a woman would maim or murder her husband or boyfriend.

That thought may have crossed the minds of the persons who watched in horror as Debi Olson repeatedly stabbed her ex-husband, Mauricio Droguett at a Des Moines, Iowa shopping mall. Olson was charged with first-degree murder for the July 3, 2008 attack. "It's a classic case of rage, of hate for someone - it's very personal," explained Capt. David Struckman. "She definitely stalked this man." (Read the rest here)

Obama/Biden: Escalating the War on Fathers and Families
By
Gordon E. Finley, Ph.D.

Tragically -- but true to the radical feminist agenda -- the Obama/Biden Democratic ticket portends an escalating war on boys, men, fathers, and families. On Father’s Day 2008, Sen. Obama could have spoken on any number of topics. His choice was to castigate African-American fathers and blame fathers, and fathers alone, for the ills of the African-American family.

He called upon African-American fathers to be more involved in their children ’s lives (certainly a worthwhile call) but he also castigated them for failing to endorse “responsible fatherhood” which essentially means signing up for 18 years of overly highly calculated child support. Economists understand, but Sen. Obama ideologically overlooks, the reality that child support currently is calculated at a level far above what the majority of fathers -- including poor and unemployed fathers -- actually are capable of paying or that children require (see W. S. Comanor, The law and economics of child support payments, 2004). (Read the rest here)

The Three Most Important Attributes of a Decent Human
By Charles H. Sawders

In this day and age when every psycho-babbling television psychologist, social worker, government agent, teacher of children and clergy are quick to list any number of attributes necessary to be a "good productive member of society", such as appreciation of diversity, multi-culturalism, and the relativism of all social and ideological structures and practices being equal, despite the consequences of any such structure, they never mention the three most important.

They are in descending order of importance Courage, Honor, Love. That's right, love is in there at a lowly third place. There are reasons for this particular ranking. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

The Independent Institute
God’s Tribunal
Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—The recent campaign forum at Saddleback Church in which U.S. presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain answered questions from pastor Rick Warren, the new star of the evangelical Christian movement, could only have happened in America. The rest of the world watched in wonder as the two candidates proclaimed their faith before the tribunal of God, trying to persuade the jury that their views on abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research, state-sponsored altruism and other “value” issues do not depart (too much) from dogma.

Not that the conduct of Warren or his followers was in any way intolerant. Quite the contrary: Both the host and the audience could not have been more congenial and fair-minded. But the forum highlighted the test that McCain, a conservative mistrusted by many conservatives, and Obama, a believer who some conservatives see as a closet Muslim, are having to pass with the evangelical community, an important factor in American politics. Two-Cent Pennies: a Window on Inflation
by Tyler A. Watts

Johnny Carson might have quipped about the economy, "Inflation is so bad these days… that pennies are now selling on the street for two cents."

This joke may not be all that funny, even with the great Carnac delivering it, but it does have the underpinnings of good comedy: an absurd story based on a kernel of truth. Old pennies are routinely traded at premium prices, sometimes twice or more their face value. This is not because they are rare or precious — they were minted by the tens of billions — but simply because they are worth more as metal than as money.
