Libertarian Commentary on The News 10 - 16 August
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Hard to imagine, but August is half gone, and most of the Northern Hemisphere has burned to death from global warming. Actually, no – in fact, Eisenhower Tunnel west of Denver was closed for much of yesterday due to a big multi-car pile-up caused by snowpacked roads… and I am sitting in Durango (Colorado) right now getting rained on in the middle of what is claimed to be a global warming “hot spot” that is suffering and will suffer from severe drought making people in SoCal die of thirst unless they can drink salt water. Right.

In the same way as we are being fed multiple lines of bilge about “global warming,” we are seeing exactly the same thing on many other issues, not least of which is the Russo-Georgian War. I’ve written a special article this week to talk about the half-dozen articles tracing the progress of that war this week.

Afghan front:
Karzai urges US, NATO to attack Pakistan
Brownsville Herald
“President Hamid Karzai said Sunday that airstrikes carried out in Afghan villages by U.S. and NATO troops are only killing civilians and that the international community should instead go after terror centers in Pakistan. International forces serving under NATO and the separate U.S.-led coalition insist that the vast majority of those killed in air raids are militants.” (08/10/08)

My personal opinion was that in 2003, we had more justification of self-defense for attacking Pakistan than Iraq … but that was five years ago. Got to figure out what goes on in the “border” regions, but that requires intelligence and not just attack, attack, attack… (Read the rest here)

Poor White Boys - The Past as Future
by Mike Vanderboegh

“Sometimes you’re just stuck with the duty.” His old shooting buddy Phil Gordon had told him that late one night on one of the rare times they'd spoken about Vietnam. William Sheats Shipman had been too young to participate in the "Southeast Asia War Games," and one night while sitting at the campfire after an unsuccesful day on the deer stands, Will asked the older man what it had been like. Uncharacteristically, Phil Gordon told him. Probably because he considered Will like a younger brother, Shipman thought. (Read the rest here)

THE Russo-Georgian War of 2008 to date: a libertarian view
By Nathan A. Barton (TM and © 2008)

If we listen to and read all the pundits, we have one of two choices when it comes to the Russo-Georgian War of 2008:

1. Russia is an evil, warmongering, imperialist state that is teaching Georgia, NATO, and the US who is the big dog, and has carefully crafted this entire show to put the fear of Russia into NATO and further isolate the US.
2. Georgia is an evil, warmongering, imperialist state that is being sicced on South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the evil Bush-led NATO to whip up support for tarring Russia as evil and also expanding the US power in the Middle East.

Well, life isn’t so simple as that – and neither is the Russo-Georgian War. All the big bugaboos are being whipped up for this: (Read the rest here)

Who Killed Millie Almore at the SafeSpace Shelter?
By Carey Roberts

On October 21, 2007 Milaus Almore, eight weeks pregnant, sought refuge at the SafeSpace abuse shelter. Ten days later the 26-year-old woman lay dead, stabbed with a pocket knife that left a gaping wound in the side of her neck. The weapon was wielded not by her abuser, but by another woman staying at the Stuart, Fla. facility.

The victim's grieving mother blurted out the obvious irony of her death: "She went in there to be safe, and she got killed." (Read the rest here)

SnooperChips and ToasterTaps

The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Congressman Sensenbrenner knows how to win the Drug War. He wants to forcibly turn us all into Deputy Dawgs. His bill, introduced last May, would require every person in the USSA to rat out everyone who has ever so much as copped a contact high from a wayward puff of pot.

Anyone who fails to fink on family or friends lands in lockup. If Men won't inform on their Moms, if Dads don't denounce their daughters, if Lilo flinches at snitching on Stitch – and then won't help convict them – they become prison fodder themselves. (Read the rest here)

When Power Speaks Truth
by Garry Reed

It's rare enough in this age of politician worship and dutiful rules-following for a citizen to speak truth to Power, but it's outright stunning when Power speaks truth to citizens.

From a real article in The Chattanoogan: General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon told a woman who had been badly beaten during a carjacking to "purchase a weapon, obtain a gun permit, and learn to protect yourself." Crime in the city, said the judge, "has become so rampant that it is no longer possible for the police department to protect our citizens."

Will this judge be severely censored by his fellow rulingcrats, or is it possible to imagine honest, principled events like these in the future? (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Isn’t the Law Already In Our Hands?
by Wilton D. Alston

What’s Against the Law, and Who Gets to Decide?

Before one can begin even the most cursory analysis of justice, one needs to understand the only two sources for crimes available. A crime can be malum in se – wrong by its very nature, or malum prohibitum – wrong because it has been prohibited by statute. We seem to live in a time when more and more people – seemingly drunk off the overcooked pot liquor of learned stupidity – either don’t know which is which or worse yet, don’t care. Punishment is what the law is for! Justice is just details! (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Putin the Terrible
Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—In “Rebuilding Russia,” published as the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse, Alexander Solzhenitsyn wrote that the “awakening Russian national self-awareness has to a large extent been unable to free itself of great-power thinking and of imperial delusions ... it has taken over from the communists the fraudulent and contrived notion of Soviet patriotism.” As all prescient statements, it was a shrewd reading of the present, not the future. The Russian invasion of Georgia is a powerful confirmation of Solzhenitsyn’s words.

Of course, one could reverse his argument: Soviet imperialism was a continuation, not an antecedent, of Russian nationalism. Vladimir Putin and his stooge, President Dmitry Medvedev, have revived a tradition of Russian expansionism that dates back to Ivan the Terrible. The invasion of Georgia echoes Russia’s annexation of that country in 1801 and again in 1921, when the Soviets crushed a short-lived Georgian independence. War in Georgia Shows U.S. Foreign Policy Is a Bust
by Sheldon Richman

The tragic events in the nation of Georgia show that U.S. foreign policy is a bust. In particular, NATO must go. This may seem counterintuitive, but this relic of the Cold War has nothing to contribute to peace. On the contrary, it is a destabilizing tool of America’s provocative imperial foreign policy.

Let us stipulate that the Russian government would undoubtedly be interested in having Georgia in its camp even if NATO did not exist. The Russian elite has always seen itself destined for a major role in world events, and that dream of course included a large sphere of influence where friendly regimes saw things the Russian way. The Great Gold Robbery of 1933
Thomas E. Woods, Jr.

It's been 75 years since the federal government, on the spurious grounds of fighting the Great Depression, ordered the confiscation of all monetary gold from Americans, permitting trivial amounts for ornamental or industrial use. This happens to be one of the episodes Kevin Gutzman and I describe in detail in our new book, Who Killed the Constitution? The Fate of American Liberty from World War I to George W. Bush. From the point of view of the typical American classroom, on the other hand, the incident may as well not have occurred.

A key piece of legislation in this story is the Emergency Banking Act of 1933, which Congress passed on March 9 without having read it and after only the most trivial debate. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
