04, 2008 Ninety-nine stories this week, including a LOT on self-defense issues, which I have now organized (at least for this week) into several categories. One event SHOULD be noted and commemorated today: the Battle of Athens in 1946, in which returned American vets and their fellow-citizens used guns to defend themselves against a tyrannical local government in the heart of Tennessee! May we all follow their example! Our
right to defend ourselves STILL NOT HERE: The FEDERAL 2nd Amendment may not apply, but I think the Illinois Constitution does: SECTION 22. RIGHT TO ARMS Subject only to the police power, the right of the individual citizen to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Now, I dont know what subject only to the police power means, except that it might match with the idiocy of the Supremes reasonable regulation like not discharging needlessly in a residential zone or prohibiting minors or felons from carrying (although imagine if we took away the free-speech or religious practice rights of minors and felons!). In other words, the thug-ocracy of Chicago has an idiot for a corporation counsel probably because no one who is competent and has any self-respect would work for the thugs that are the city government of Chicago. Compare this to another Illinois town, next story. (Read the rest here) - two full pages!
Surge-on,
Dudes! We know the fable: A brave and determined U.S. President "stays the course," surging more troops into harms way despite the unpatriotic opposition of the antiwar appeasers. And, sure enough, it works! And now, the military claims, The Surge is over. Is that a good thing? Don't be too sure - - - (Read the rest here)
Sippenhaft
(Chapter
two) Dickerson looked up from his notes to see the AD Ops shaking his head. "That's exactly what were NOT going to do. We're going to keep grinding that bastard until there's nothing left of him. His damned killer father wasted over a hundred of our agents but he's dead and I can't do anything to him, so I'm doing the next best thing. I'm going to grind every one of that traitor's spawn into dust. Teach them to screw with the United States government." "Yes, sir," replied Dickerson. "Shall I continue the electronic surveillance to verify his whereabouts?" "Hell yes," growled the AD. "And what next, sir?" "Have we audited his taxes yet?" "No sir." "Well do it. I'm not going to be happy until the SOB puts a gun to his sorry head. See to it, Dickerson." "Yes, sir." (Read the rest here) Anthrax
Attacks -- Assassin Nation After
9/11 and before the passage of the Patriot Act a month later, our great
national terror was the anthrax attacks waged against the mainstream media
and Congress. Democratic Senators Daschle and Leahy, both targeted, had
been well positioned to oppose the Patriot Act on constitutional grounds,
and perhaps lead their party to do the same. The anthrax attacks changed
all that, putting Bush and Cheney in total control.
Politically Incorrect Movie Reviews When I first heard that Indiana Jones was still out searching for artifacts, I figured at his age he would be resigned to looking through flea markets and garage sales. 66-year old (so they tell us) Harrison Ford returns as the teacher/adventurer, but this time he’s less the swashbuckling, whipcracker and more the cranky old professor, which makes sense, as the grouchy hey you kids get off my lawn attitude fits him well. Set in 1957, the year of the great Chevy (and Indy looks a bit like a’57 Chevy rode hard), IJCS plays into the pop culture obsessions of the era; cloak and dagger Commies and flying saucer men. Unfortunately, as we all found out later (yet Hollyweird still denies it) there really were commies here. They are still here; we’ve just renamed them: Liberals, Environmentalists, etc. Flying saucers I’m not too sure of, but I did see some aliens at the Ladsen Flea Market. IJCS is sort of a cross between National Treasure meets Wizard Of Oz. So what has this film got that’ll make you want to go see it? Well … not much; but it’s got Indiana Freakin’ Jones, that’s what it’s got. (Read the rest here) The
ABA Goes Over to the Dark Side A few years ago the American Bar Association decided it was time to cash in on this grand social experiment, so it set up the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence. Before long the CODV was setting out to revamp American family law to comport with its global feminist-socialist vision. For example this week the Commission's website features this startling claim: "International human rights legal principles may be used persuasively in domestic violence cases in U.S. state courts." That statement gives you an idea of how far the ABA has moved away from its well-cultivated image of black-cloaked probity and stern-faced reason. (Read the rest here) External
Articles A friend of mine forwarded me a question a friend of his had posed: If/when our Federal Government comes to pilfer, pillage, plunder our property and destroy our lives, what good can a handgun do against an army with advanced weaponry, tanks, missiles, planes, or whatever else they might have at their disposal to achieve their nefarious goals? (I'm not being facetious: I accept the possibility that what happened in Germany, or similar, could happen here; I'm just not sure that the potential good from an armed citizenry in such a situation outweighs the day-to-day problems caused by masses of idiots who own guns.) If I may, I'd like to try to answer that question. I certainly do not think the writer facetious for asking it. The subject is a serious one to which I have given much research and considerable thought. I believe that upon the answer to this question depends the future of our Constitutional republic, our liberty and perhaps our lives. The
Independent Institute Many opponents of the Bush administrations invasion and occupation of Iraq have always argued that this conflict is an irrelevant and even counterproductive sideshow to the real war on terrorism in Afghanistan. In fact, Barack Obama led the parade to initiate a troop surge in Afghanistan after having opposed it in Iraq. The more hawkish John McCain, not to be outdone by a weak-kneed Democrat, proposed that even more troops be sent to Afghanistan. In American politics after 9/11, it seems that candidates have to support some sort of war or they will be perceived as being too wimpy to get elected. Only a small minority of foreign policy gadflies has doubted whether any war on terrorism is needed in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Now a new report by RAND, the governments own captive think tank, supports this small band of renegades. The study, How Terrorist Groups End: Lessons for Countering al-Qaeda, written by terrorism experts Seth Jones and Martin Libicki, followed more than 600 terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, over the long-term. The report concluded that the administrations war on terrorism has not significantly degraded al-Qaeda and that the group has morphed into a more formidable enemy. In fact, al-Qaeda has perpetrated more attacks after September 11, 2001 than before it. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
The
Future of Freedom Foundation The state of Minnesota is prosecuting a 19-year-old college student, Max P. Sanders, for the crime of having offered his vote in this years presidential election to the highest bidder on eBay. He is being charged with this heinous crime, which could land him in prison for as long as five years and cost him as much as $10,000, under an 1893 law that criminalizes the buying and selling of votes. The AP report linked above notes that this law is scarcely used. That explains why most Minnesota voters and practically every politician who sets foot in the Land of 10,000 Lakes are not currently behind bars or in hock to the state to the tune of a buck per lake. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute In a recent column, Paul Krugman tries to explain the "Bush bust." Instead of clear, cogent economic theory, we are fed a mass of contradictory ideas, a bit of political partisanship, and explanations that simply make no sense. When one attempts to apply economic theory in order to explain certain events, one is reminded of Carl Menger's dictum: "All things are subject to the law of cause and effect. This great principle knows no exception, and we would search in vain in the realm of experience for an example to the contrary." (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
