Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Exactly 100 stories this week (unless we add some more!) explaining how, in this 233rd year of American liberty, that liberty is all too often slipping away here and around the world. We need to take advantage of every opportunity to promote freedom for us all!

2008 Campaign:
New poll uncovers bloc of undecided voters
KN@PPSTER
The presidential race remains volatile and unpredictable, largely because of a huge bloc of undecided swing voters. ‘The middle of the electorate is reasserting itself in this election,” according to a Pew Research Center survey released Thursday. Among all voters, Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain by 48 to 40 percent. … some 46 percent of independents are undecided or only lukewarm toward their current choices. Only 28 percent of them said they’d certainly vote for Obama, while only 26 percent said they were sure to back McCain.” (07/10/08)

It is absolutely amazing to see what you can uncover in a graveyard with a backhoe, isn’t it? You have to wonder exactly how crooked even the opinion polls are, much less the actual voting. But this is a great opportunity to teach and reach people with the Barr-Root or Boston Tea Party alternatives to business as usual; or to get people to just opt OUT of electoral politics in general. Take your pick!

Facing Reality on Domestic Violence
By
Gordon E. Finley, Ph.D.

The very high profile case of Fort Lauderdale police Chief Frank Adderley whose wife Eleanor Leisa Adderly shot at him, missed him by inches while he lay in bed, and then continued to fire at him while he fled the house provides South Florida and the nation with a unique opportunity to face squarely three realities regarding Domestic Violence.

First, we must overcome our gender based stereotypes that men always are the perpetrators and women the eternal victims. While many similar individual cases could be cited -- including the woman who shot her husband in the back with a shotgun while he slept in bed to the wife who ran over her husband multiple times in her Mercedes --what is important for social policy are not individual cases but rather the findings of social science research. Abuse Shelter Head Turns to Violence and Abuse
By Carey Roberts

The domestic violence industry operates under the cloak of secrecy and anonymity, maintaining such policies are necessary to shield victims from their abusers. But every now and then a crack appears in the façade, revealing a sordid panorama of corruption, fraud, and abuse.

On February 28, 2007 the Naples, Fla. citizenry opened their morning newspapers to the jolting headline, "CEO Out at Women's Shelter: Investigation into Battery Complaint Prompts Departure." Over the next several months, details would spill out of a woman's rights activist who had evolved into a self-serving "tyrant," as one of her colleagues later described her. (Read the rest here)

The Founding Father of Constitutional Subversion
by Thomas J. DiLorenzo

Hamilton was indeed the founding father of constitutional subversion through what we now call "judicial activism." That’s why leftist law professors like Strossen lionize him in their classrooms while barely mentioning opposing viewpoints.

Hamilton was the leading advocate of a constitutional convention to "amend" the nation’s first constitution, the Articles of Confederation. He lobbied for seven years to have such a convention convened, constantly complaining to George Washington and anyone else who would listen that "we need a government of more energy." Patrick Henry opposed Hamilton by sagely pointing out that the Articles of Confederation had created a government powerful enough to raise and equip an army that defeated the British empire, and that that seemed sufficient to him. Blood and Oil
by Karen Kwiatkowski

For the past several days, the past several weeks, the past several years, and for the past several decades, the media, the politicians, and the economists – along with investors, entrepreneurs, and geologists – have obsessed about oil. Analyses and assessments of oil abound, as thick and opaque as the black stuff itself. Is it peaking, is it increasing, or is it self-rejuvenating? Is its price determined by the market, the cartels, or the futures traders? Is it the new gold, or the last century’s promissory note to this century’s failing central banks? Has it been the motivation for America’s wars over the past 60 years? The answer to all these questions is a not completely confident "Sure!" Should the Government Kill Its Own Citizens?
Ivan Eland

The implications of a government killing its own citizens for vengeance, deterrence, or any other reasons, however, are far greater than individuals taking lives in self-defense. The government is vastly more powerful than individuals and often has poor incentive structures compared to individual citizens. If the government is allowed to kill criminals, no matter what heinous crimes they have committed, then the precedent can always be expanded to kill law-abiding citizens for political reasons. Governments are especially prone to do this when they are fighting wars—reacting to paranoia that the enemy is everywhere. So although capital punishment may be constitutional, it is still a bad policy idea for many reasons. But the most important reason is the potential for abuse by the government. The Future of Freedom Foundation
The Real Meaning of the Fourth of July
by Jacob G. Hornberger

Contrary to popular myth, the men who signed the Declaration of Independence were not great Americans. Instead, they were great Englishmen. In fact, they were as much English citizens as Americans today are American citizens. It’s easy to forget that the revolutionaries in 1776 were people who took up arms against their own government.

So how is it that these men are considered patriots? Well, the truth is that their government didn’t consider them patriots at all. Their government considered them to be bad guys — traitors, all of whom deserved to be hanged for treason. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Who Really Lives on a Fixed Income?
Mark A. Pribonic

Contrary to the myth, workers in the private sector have little ability to increase their nominal wages during times of rising prices. But the same cannot be said for the recipients of government checks. Instituted under federal legislation passed in the 1970s, citizens receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income get an automatic increase in their checks every December that partially compensates for the rising costs of daily living. Beginning with the cost-of-living adjustment at the end of 2007, the hike in Social Security income has been 2.3%, 3.3%, and 4.1% over the last three years.

Labor contracts that cover government employees also give annual bumps in pay. According to a report released by the American Federation of Teachers, the wage increases for government workers from 2006–2007 in 45 different job classifications averaged 5.7%. A USA Today news story earlier in the year reported that the total compensation for government employees from 2000–2007 had risen by 16%, while their private-sector counterparts lagged behind with an increase of 11% over the same period.
