Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Hopefully everyone celebrated liberty and independence with more than grills and fireworks in the last few days. Remember, the best kind of liberty to celebrate is the kind you are keeping and not what was won in the past but lost. Ask yourself, in this new 233rd year of Liberty, are you more free now than you were last year? If the answer is no, look to yourself to figure out how to change it – you can be certain that the government won’t give any freedom back. Like our natural resources, it is “saving it” for “future generations,” no doubt. With a short work week (ha!), the news is a bit short this week, too, after last week.

2008 Campaign:
Libertarians sue for Ohio, Tennessee ballot lines
Tennessean
“The Libertarian Party has filed lawsuits in Ohio and Tennessee against what it says are unconstitutionally restrictive ballot-access laws. Ohio is the biggest swing state standing in the way of the party’s efforts to place candidates on the November ballot. The party’s first goal is to get former GOP congressman Bob Barr on the ballot in 48 of 50 states. Some Republicans are worried Barr will play spoiler in a tight presidential contest. He’s on the ballot as a Libertarian or independent in 31 states so far. In the Ohio lawsuit, the party hopes to overturn a state rule that requires a minor party to turn in more than 20,000 signatures 100 days before the primary. If unsuccessful in the lawsuit, party members hope to gather 5,000 signatures to get Barr on the ballot as an independent.” (06/30/08)

Like most of the other 19, these laws are doing EXACTLY what they were intended to do. (Read the rest here)

A Baker's Dozen - Meditations On The Scripture and Our Right To Defend Ourselves
By Nathan A. Barton (TM and © 2008)

Verse: Nehemiah 4:9: “So we prayed to our God and stationed a guard because of them [furious plotters, verse 8] day and night.” (HCSB)

Throughout history, the builder has frequently also had to defend what they have built against those who do not want the building done. Sometimes it is a spiritual “building project,” and sometimes it is a physical project with a spiritual aspect. Whether it was the Anasazi defending their cliff dwellings against nomadic raiders, a contractor protecting his equipment and job-site against eco-freak “monkeywrenchers,” or an inner-city ministry defending their chapel against a street gang, they can all appreciate the situation in the rebuilding of Jerusalem 2500 years ago. When They Came For The Philadelphia Christians
By Doug Newman

Tyranny is a lot like cancer. Early detection is a great thing. Stopping cancer and tyranny in the early stages can prevent a world of hurt, pain and death down the road.

In America, we enjoy a measure of freedom. However, we are not nearly as free as we think we are. Our liberty is under assault from multiple directions every day. This assault is not being waged by some dorko in a cave in Afghanistan and his scary brown minions. Rather, it is being waged by our own government. Already, "the land of the free" has the world's highest incarceration rate. There is so much creeping tyranny and so little time to address it all. And millions of Americans are in total denial. The US Supine Court
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

The highest court in the country has flopped fish-belly upward in the ugliest ongoing exhibition of anti-Constitutional cowardice since Franklin Socialist Roosevelt threatened to pollute the power and privilege of that pompous panel by adding additional arbiters. The black-robed jurists are now nothing more than submissive enablers for their fellow freedom-defiling federalcrats, supine before the power of the political Mafiosi.

The toadying began in earnest in 2003 with Campaign Finance Deform, when the jaded Justices hand-delivered Congress the "right" to ban political speech. (Read the rest here)

Abortionists' Latest Ruse: Claim to be Against DV
By Carey Roberts

Protectors of the innocent unborn need to prepare for the impending assault on the right to life, this time waged under the banner of stopping "domestic violence."

Actually, the first volley has already been fired. Democratic senator Barack Obama recently announced his support of the proposed International Violence Against Women Act, a bill the Family Violence Prevention Fund admits is designed to solidify "women's access to reproductive health service." The Heller misdirection
by William N. Grigg

“Like the inhabitants of other formerly free societies, Americans are content to define ‘freedom’ in terms of those liberties we are permitted to exercise. Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller is perfectly in harmony with this self-defeating concept of ‘freedom.’ It is entirely appropriate that the decision was written by Antonin Scalia, the most reliably authoritarian and consistently liberty-aversive member of the Court. With an air of regal condescension, Scalia allows that the Second Amendment acknowledges and protects an individual right to armed self-defense. He then explicitly limits the extent to which that ‘right’ can be exercised, thereby redefining it as a State-conferred privilege.”(Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. America doesn’t need leadership
by JD Tuccille

“Both major presidential candidates have made it quite clear that — policy differences aside — they’re running to be national leader and they want to be assessed on their readiness to take the nation’s helm. That’s a shame, because if there’s anything this country does not need, it’s a leader. In fact, the whole idea of national leadership in a republic of free, self-governing people was intensely distasteful to the founders.” (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. That Cell Phone Ban
Anthony Gregory

Ever use a phone headset while driving? It’s distracting. You might find yourself precariously steering with your left knee while positioning the plug into the jack, dialing with one hand and steadying the earpiece with the other. God help you if you’re using a clutch. Some headset models are less clumsy, but such madness is and will remain perfectly legal in California, because it’s “hands-free”—a fitting term for such acrobatics. Driving while talking on the phone the old-fashioned way, however, will be punishable by a small fine beginning July 1. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. The Court Gets It Right on Guns
by Sheldon Richman

Advocates of freedom dodged a bullet last week when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the right to keep and bear arms, the subject of the Second Amendment, is an individual, not a collective, right. Opponents of gun ownership have long maintained that the Amendment’s reference to the militia indicates that the right does not apply to private persons. The Non-Issue that Should Be an Issue
by Gregory Bresiger

It's the spending, stupid!

When was the last time you heard Senator Obama or Senator McCain give a speech on the bloated public sector? Did Senator Clinton, in her recently concluded presidential bid, ever scold voters who constantly want the government to "give" them more and more services?

These are rhetorical questions. Today our ruling parties tacitly agree that no government department can be eliminated, that major spending reductions are forbidden and that the spending spree must continue.
