Well, after a week off, I am invigorated and ready to tackle the news again. Sadly, I came back to find that the elections are STILL not over – no new massa has been anointed to replace Massa W… or the other 535 lil massas (plus that delegate “for” D.C. and the other territories). Sigh. November can’t come soon enough!

Also, like a few others, I celebrate Independence Day on the 2nd of July; the date that the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence – a reminder that it is deeds and NOT pomp and circumstance that matters in human events. May you all celebrate Independence Day in an appropriate manner, remembering the liberty AND freedom won so long ago – the reclaiming of unalienable rights given by Almighty God that are the birthright of EVERY human being in the universe. All we talk about human rights are just aspects of the liberty given by the Creator, liberty for which we individually are and will be held accountable for its wise use – and for how we extend it or deny it to others.

DC vs Heller: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

As someone famously observed, the Second Amendment is not about duck hunting. Nor, as much as way too many of our purported allies even among libertarians and other hard-core freedom lovers try to believe otherwise, is it merely about self-defense. The Second Amendment is about deterring TYRANNY, by maintaining the credible possibility of armed resistance - and should that awful possibility come to pass, by actively EXECUTING armed resistance.

Scalia explicitly conceded that point, which I must say I found somewhat amazing, but at the same time he shied away from really applying it. At least some of the justices, I think, know damn good and well that things like the 1934 National Firearms Act and the insultingly named 1986 "Firearms Owners Protection Act" are blatantly unconstitutional, but are just plain afraid of the consequences should they overturn them. That's a fight for another day, though, and this ruling does indeed make that fight at least conceivable to win in some distant, undefined rosy future. (Read the rest here)

The Murder Paradox: Working At The Speed Of Hate

One of the best-kept secrets since 1972, when our quest began to develop and deploy aggressive social intervention on behalf of intimate partner violence victims, is that thirty years ago more men were being murdered by their intimate partners annually than women were (See figure 2).[2] Yet not one shelter for men was established. To this day less than a dozen shelters for men exist and our victim support systems routinely deny services to men.

From the onset of our societal intervention, the levels of IPH for both men and women declined. Oddly, and without any concise explanation from anyone to date, male IPH has declined at a much faster than IPH for women, although for the most part, only abused women have received support services. We identify this mystery as, “The Murder Paradox.” (Read the rest here)

Texas Terror, Code Blue! Will Dr. Ron Paul Operate?

Given his tour de force diagnosis of the worldwide situation, it's stunning that Paul hasn't done anything to protect his home turf.  His district 14 is dense with Big Oil refineries that are labeled top terror targets by the Bush administration.  This is especially true of Texas City, which worried residents have grimly nicknamed Toxic City.

The Iconoclast has spent all of May and June trying to reach Paul as the one who should be most concerned with the lives and welfare of the citizens he represents.  For two solid months, though, his staff has kept their man incommunicado. A right to bear arms, if you can keep it

Those restrictions that Scalia finds consistent with an individual right to keep and bear arms go quite a bit further than any limits we'd consider reasonable on First Amendment rights. It's impossible to imagine the courts permitting bans on the mentally ill or convicted felons speaking their minds about matters of public policy. Nor is it possible to imagine, say, a requirement for background checks or waiting periods on anybody starting a blog passing constitutional muster. And there's no requirement that publishers refrain from using "unusual" or "dangerous" (especially powerful?) media, even in these days of campaign finance "reform." Random Acts of Anarchy

I think it would be great fun to have an "Anarchy Day". I have decided to celebrate annually on June 18th, with a mini-Anarchy Day on the 18th of every month, but there may be better dates. In northern climes, winter dates might not work too well for what I have in mind.

On our Anarchy Day, each of us individual anarchists could commit random acts of helpful, public anarchy. Each of us recognizes, of course, that we all, even the most enthusiastic statists, live our daily lives in a basic condition of anarchy. It is the only way that works unless you are in a coma. For one day, I would like to see us show the rest of the world why anarchism is the only philosophy that really works; without ordering others around and stealing from them. WASHINGTON—We tend to judge this year’s food crisis, marked by seemingly indomitable prices, from the point of view of those who are suffering. It might be useful to judge the crisis also from the point of view of those who are causing it. That’s where the real lessons will be learned.

Let’s take Argentina, one of the world’s top producers of grains and soybeans. Agriculture, both traditional and industrial, employs a third of the country’s work force and accounts for half of its exports. Three months ago, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner declared war on the countryside by raising taxes on farm exports. The decision took an already alarming tendency to new heights—both her government and that of her husband, Nestor Kirchner, whom she succeeded, have squeezed farmers in order to maintain a political machine based on patronage and wealth redistribution under a populist state. This time, the Buenos Aires government decreed that export taxes would shadow price fluctuations on the world market, in practice raising them to 45 percent of farmers’ revenues. If we add to the other taxes paid by farmers and the rest of Argentine society, we are talking of landing a tax burden of up to 75 percent on farmers. Barack Obama: The Peace Candidate?

Why would anyone think that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is the peace candidate?

True, before President Bush sent an invasion force to Iraq and before Obama was in the Senate, he made a speech saying intervention would be a mistake. But after the invasion, in 2004, he said he wasn’t sure how he would have voted when the resolution authorizing Bush to use force to overthrow Saddam Hussein came before the Senate. Since being in the Senate, he has voted to continue the occupation.

On the Impossibility of Limited Government

As Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, government was instituted to protect life, property, and the pursuit of happiness. It drew its legitimacy from the consent of the governed. In contrast, the royal British government claimed that it could tax the colonists without their consent. If a government failed to do what it was designed to do, Jefferson declared, "it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness."

But what was the next step once independence from Britain had been won? This question leads to the third source of national pride — the American Constitution — and the explanation as to why this Constitution, rather than being a legitimate source of pride, represents a fateful error.
