How I Ripped Off Ayn Rand
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

February 2, 2005, the Centenary of Ayn Rand's birth, has inspired an abundance of autobiographical essays on "Why I am an Objectivist" or "How I became a Libertarian" or, in my instance, a contrite confessional about "How I Ripped Off Ayn Rand."

It all started when I was twelve or thirteen and my big brother introduced me to science fiction. He gave me a paperback anthology that reprinted short stories from an earlier decade's pulp periodicals like Amazing Stories, Astounding Stories, Fantastic Stories and I Am Not Making This Up (Oops, that was Dave Barry). A False Flag Target AGAIN? Ron Paul's Texas City
By Captain Eric H. May - Military-Political Editor

HOUSTON -- The Texas City Police Department roadblocked the city's refinery area for most of Wednesday, responding to a petrochemical leak at Marathon Oil -- and also raising suspicions among residents and employees in touch with The Iconoclast. Fire department and hazmat teams operated inside the cordon, which encircled the nation's most polluted and perilous industrial area.

Texas City has been the focus of my recent articles, which have also been published in Galveston County's The Police News. The latest, Ron Paul's Texas City in Danger, appeared June 16, and it raised serious and still unanswered questions about the township known to locals as Toxic City. (Read the rest here)

Sex, Lies, and Datatapes of the Partner Abuse Industry
By Carey Roberts

The domestic violence industry is reeling from a recent series of high-profile scandals, leaving abuse workers to wonder how things could have possibly gone so wrong. First the Sex.

Recently a woman described her stay at an abuse shelter. In shocking detail, she recounts how threats and bullying had become commonplace among the shelter residents. Once a resident punched her forearm, screaming at her, "bitch!" One night another woman assaulted her, injuring her back and forcing her to seek medical attention. (Read the rest here)

A Major Victory for Texas
By Ron Paul

I am pleased to report that last week we received notice that the Texas Department of Transportation will recommend the I-69 Project be developed using existing highway facilities instead of the proposed massive new Trans Texas Corridor/NAFTA Superhighway. According to the Texas Transportation Commissioner, consideration is no longer being given to new corridors and other proposals for a new highway footprint for this project. A major looming threat to property rights and national sovereignty is removed with this encouraging announcement. Public outcry was cited as the main reason for this decision. Reality, What a Concept!
By Dale Franks

We have a problem, and it's serious. It's not a particularly new problem, but it does seem to be getting noticeably worse. The problem is that, in a number of areas, our politicians, and sadly, a great number of our people, no longer seem to be able to recognize reality. They simply believe things that cannot possibly be true. The recent wrangling over oil prices, and policy responses epitomize this unhinged mindset. Ireland’s “No”
By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—European governments are aghast at the decision by Irish voters to reject the Treaty of Lisbon, the new attempt—three years after the collapse of the European Union’s Constitution—to move decisively toward political integration. The only country out of 27 in which ratification was put to a vote has left Eurocrats desperate to find a way to bypass their own rules and move ahead.

There is nothing surprising in this. Ever since Europe made the leap from economic to political integration with the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, a substantial number of European citizens have shown contempt for top-down efforts to impose on them supranational institutions. Each time a country’s voters reject a treaty—the Danish in 1992, the French and the Dutch in 2005, the Irish in 2008—a new attempt is made to push for political integration without taking into account the things that people are finding unacceptable. The Future of Freedom Foundation
Habeas Corpus Barely Saved
by Sheldon Richman

Once in a while the fading embers of freedom flare with defiant vigor. That happened the other day when the U.S. Supreme Court sternly informed the Bush administration that it may not hold people suspected of being terrorists indefinitely without charge and without judicial review at its prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In a too-close-for-comfort 5-4 ruling, the Court reminded the American people — indeed, the world — that arbitrary power destroys individual liberty. Where government can lock people up and throw away the key — answerable to no one at all — there liberty does not dwell. That is what the Bush administration has aspired to, but last week the Court drew a line. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Should Age Discrimination Be Legal?

by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

Imagine if the state said that you may not quit your job on grounds that you dislike your boss's age, race, religion, or sex. If that is your reason, you must stay working there. We would all recognize that this is a case of involuntary servitude. It is an attack on freedom. So why do we not see that it is the same with the employer?

Under freedom, if an employer decides, for no good reason, that employees should not be older than 40, that is his judgment. If it is a bad decision, the competition will gain an edge by hiring the people who have been passed over.
