front: Gee, listening to the hoploclasts, you surely dont get an idea that this is happening, do you? But even when crime was CLIMBING overall in the nation in the past two years, as weve pointed out for that same period it is only in the large, crime-ridden (and cop-ridden) urban areas that the crime rate rose: in the rest of the country, it has continued to drop. Mama's Note: It also depends on what is called "crime." Even "violent crime" is not defined correctly much of the time. (Read the rest here)
A chilling article appeared in Friday's Denver Rocky Mountain News. The headline read "More Churchgoers Carrying Firearms.'The opening paragraph read: Ever since a gunman went on a deadly shooting rampage at a missionary training center in Arvada and a Colorado Springs megachurch, law enforcement and security officials are encountering what they believe is a growing dilemma - people packing firearms when they go to worship. There is no "dilemma" at all for those who can read and think.
My
Lou Gehrig's Disease - An Iconoclastic Update MY FRIEND Tanya Lunstroth, from the University of Houston Honors College, wrote me the other day to ask how I was doing: Eric, just checking in to find out if all goes as well as expected (whatever that is). Send me an email. -- Tanya Since I have other friends at the Honors College, from which I was a 1985 graduate, my reply will interest them, as well as those who read my column. (Read the rest here)
U.S.
State Department Behind International Child Abduction Scandal Karl Hindle has been working tirelessly for five years and spent more than four hundred thousand dollars investigating his daughter's illegal abduction to the U.S. What he has uncovered is deplorable. The paper trail shows the United States government is in the business of illegal baby snatching and harboring criminals. Emily would not have suffered the loss of her father for the last five years, or the vision in her right eye, if it weren't for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA.) And people like Barbara Grieg of the U.S. State Department who see it as an excuse for misandry and a license for lawlessness. (Read the rest here)

Russert and Fatherhood: A Tribute Tim Russert, internationally respected political analyst and moderator of NBC News Meet the Press, died unexpectedly and prematurely at age 58 on Friday the thirteenth of June 2008 -- the day preceding the Fathers Day weekend -- at work. Russert likely best will be remembered as the longest-running host of one of televisions most intensely incisive political interview programs. In my view, however, he should best be remembered as a son, father, and one of the most positive exemplars of and advocates for fathers and their importance in childrens lives. Russert was born on May 7, 1950. (Read the rest here)

Criminalize Everything Wife Mary remarked on the mourning Mom on the morning news who demanded that cell phones in cars be outlawed because a cell phone-yakking driver had run her son down. "They'll have to ban radios and CDs and triple whip mocha hazelnut caffè lattes," she scoffed, "because those things distract drivers too." She didn't literally say that, of course. (This is an exercise in creative writing.) And, mind you, she wasn't begrudging the woman's grief either, just questioning her judgment. Why hadn't Mom lashed out at the driver himself, Mary mused, instead of his cell phone? Because, as all us thoughtful and attentive libertarians know, years of propaganda by product liability lawyers and their enabling judges have programmed people to buy the idea that inanimate objects especially those produced by big corporations with bottomless billfolds are the sources of all of society's ills. Knows Best Father Knows Best was one of the most widely-viewed and long-running TV shows of the 1950s. True, the program played to a romanticized image of middle-class Americana. But that beats the modern-day alternative of a raging epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases, safe havens for abandoned infants, and 11-year-old girls wearing thong underwear. Father Knows Best was yanked from the air in 1960. Before long the popular discourse was filled with the now-familiar litany of feminist grievance. (Read the rest here) External
Articles International rice and wheat prices have doubled or tripled in the last two years, but world grain production will reach a record high this year. So how come millions are falling into poverty and starting food riots across the world? The answer lies not in any outsized surge in world demand or fall in world supply, but in the fact that several countries have imposed duties, quotas and outright bans on agricultural exports. This has reduced the amount of grain available for world trade. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.) Have
Pity For the Bullies It still isn't over. Despite a consistent string of legal defeats and a resounding loss in the court of public opinion, the State of Texas and its child-abduction auxiliary are continuing their jihad against the families of Eldorado's FLDS community. In doing so the criminals in this matter -- the child "protection" officials who kidnapped the children, and the law enforcement officers who acted as armed accomplices -- are, with the timely help of officials in Utah, making a desperation play for public sympathy by accusing the FLDS of plotting some variety of violent revenge. Independent Institute WASHINGTONWho is responsible for the astronomical price of oil? Most of the blame, as exemplified by the recent shenanigans in Congress with oil executives defending their paychecks under questioning by sanctimonious, eyebrow-raising legislators, is being put on petroleum companies. In European countries, protesters are denouncing the government for not taking immediate action to protect consumers. In newspapers from Hong Kong and Australia to Buenos Aires, traders responsible for the $260 billion currently invested in commodities funds are being condemned as speculators. Actually, those are not the culprits. For years, countries endowed with oil, such as Russia, Venezuela and Mexico, have been messing up their own capacity to produce it by using it as a political weapon. That doesnt mean that they are not producing millions of barrels each day, but it does mean that they are unable to increase production in order to keep up with demandand traders do not expect them to raise the supply of oil in the future. The
Future of Freedom Foundation The warfare state is the greatest of all threats to the individual in our time. It is a threat materially, philosophically, spiritually, culturally and intellectually. It displaces all the voluntary, civil associations we champion the family, community, church and honest business. It is the total negation of the dignity of the individual, the rights of all men and women to live their lives in liberty. It is a mixture of cold, anti-libertarian modernism and barbarism, the worst remnants of the Middle Ages combined with a new callousness and technocratic fervor. It is the most persistent form of American collectivism. It is an unparalleled threat to world peace. It is the greatest enemy of humanity and individual liberty in our midst. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute For many facing foreclosure, debt is not just confined to a single mortgage balance. In many cases, multiple loans in the form of second mortgages and equity loans were made against the hypothetical value of the property. This brings to question the part of the legislation requiring loan balances to be reduced. Does this include the balances outstanding for second- and third-tier loans? Of course, debt is not just confined to home loans. By some accounts, current credit-card debt in this country stands at over $1 trillion. It would be safe to assume that those facing foreclosure have hearty credit-card balances as a consequence of trying to make ends meet.
