Libertarian Commentary on The News, 27 April - 03 May, '08
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

Welcome to May!
Afghanistan hit the news with a big splash, but a lot of news stories this week have to do with our beloved Congress. Fuel prices keep on climbing, but the real crisis of the week is food, at least according to the UN. The evil US is once again to blame for most of it, of course: food, fuel, Afghani and Mesopotamian troubles, Tibet, and all the rest. On to the news!

Baboons:
FL: State moves to ban fake testicles on vehicles
Yahoo! News
“Senate lawmakers in Florida have voted to ban the fake bull testicles that dangle from the trailer hitches of many trucks and cars throughout the state. Republican Sen. Cary Baker, a gun shop owner from Eustis, Florida, called the adornments offensive and proposed the ban. Motorists would be fined $60 for displaying the novelty items, which are known by brand names like ‘Truck Nutz’ and resemble the south end of a bull moving north. The Florida Senate voted last week to add the measure to a broader transportation bill, but it is not included in the House version. In a spirited debate laced with double entendre, Senate lawmakers questioned whether the state should curtail freedom of expression in vehicle accessories.” (04/25/08)

What a stupid waste of time!

Mama's Note: Funny, I've not noticed anybody in Wyoming who thinks they need a pair of fake plastic testicles on their vehicle. Indeed, most of them would probably be horrified at the very thought. All the men I know here have a lot more important things on their minds, and honest work to do. Waste of time, indeed - and very sad for manhood and the human race, but if these fools want to play such stupid games they certainly have a right to do so. (Read the rest here)

Blueprint to Restore America
By Iloilo Marguerite Jones

We see government taking our property, the product of our labors, thus depriving us of the days of our lives we have invested to acquire our property. Our paychecks are plundered before they reach our hands. Our property is subject to seizure any time we fail to allocate much of our labors to pay taxes. Our tools are subject to seizure if they are not tools approved by government. More and more harmless people are tasered, locked away in prisons, or killed by government employees who then go free. We are subject to being stopped and searched at any time. We can no longer travel freely. Our private correspondence is invaded worse than any Revolutionary War plot to capture the letters of the Revolutionaries.

Short of armed revolution, how do we defend our lives, our property, our rights and our freedom? (Read the rest here)

Earth Day and Tiffy the Teenage Fortuneteller
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Under the headline "Scientists Offer Frightening Forecast" AOL News celebrated Politically Correct Earth Day this year by posting a cataclysmic horror story on how and when the Human Homeland will go to people-perpetuated Perdition in an artificially manufactured petroleum-based plastic hand basket.

The preordained demise of our planet is provided by the clairvoyants at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who passed it on to LiveScience.com who passed it to AmericaOnLine (and, presumably, others) for maximum Fear Factor. The predictions feature, as do all predictions, whether from the Book of Revelation or Nostradamus or Tiffy the Teenage Fortuneteller, a mixture of shock and awe, fuzziness and no statute of limitations. MAYDAY ALERT! - Texas Update
By Captain Eric H. May

The perils in the Southeast Texas oil patch may not be over. Alarmingly, this week Houston police gunned down Ronald Vincent Carnaby, a mysterious intelligence operative with connections to the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security. Today we read Internet reports, as yet uncorroborated, that his death may be connected to a pending false flag attempt against the BP refinery in Texas City. Too many Texans, like too many Americans, are living in dread of their government. (Read the rest here)

Hillary Unleashes Her Inner Macho
By Carey Roberts

Belatedly, the Clinton campaign has come to realize that white men represent the critical swing vote of the 2008 primaries. When Hillary captured the white male vote, she has won 9 out of 14 contests. But when the good-ol'-boys gave the nod to Barack, he triumphed in 9 of the 15 races.

Problem is, Hillary has been rubbing a lot of people the wrong way with her girl-power jokes and "Iron my Shirt" pranks. (Read the rest here)

Speechless
by Sunni Maravillosa

I guess the fact that you're reading this doesn't mean that I'm completely speechless, but for this entire month I have been unable to muster my usual enthusiasm for my work, and for my nonpaying passion, which is writing about freedom. I've felt it building for some time, yet was unable to identify its source. June 21 provided an unambiguous jolt that I'm still trying to overcome.

No, I've nothing against the start of summer (although that happens on June 20 now). June 21, 2004 is the date the U.S. Supreme Court put the nail in the coffin of the Bill of Rights. For all practical purposes, we can declare them dead -- and, similarly to what happened to Tom Paine, the death seems to have been largely unnoticed. (Read the rest here)

The Future of Freedom Foundation
One-Party System
by Sheldon Richman

I can predict the winner of the presidential election even now: the government. In a one-party system, that's how things work. One-party system? Yes. The American political scene makes much more sense if you think of the two parties as two divisions of the same party.

Admittedly that is hard to do at first. All American politics is presented as a tooth-and-claw rivalry between Republicans and Democrats. It is certainly true that elections determine who holds office among the parties' candidates, and who holds office determines whose cronies get sinecures and contracts. That does give the appearance of real competition. (Read the rest here)

Where’s the Food?
By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

When the price of something shoots up, one can infer that the supply is not keeping up with the demand. In the wake of today’s food shock, many people have focused on the causes of the rise in the demand for food. All of them—from the growing wealth of China and India to the explosion of grain-derived biofuels in rich nations—sound very plausible. Less attention has been paid to why, in the era of globalization, in which products can move quickly from manufacture to market, and with the advances in biotechnology, the supply of food is not meeting the demand.

Many governments, multilateral bodies, nongovernmental organizations and pundits are failing to answer that basic question. Instead, they postulate solutions that would either compound the problem or constitute at best a short-term palliative. The real solution will be the removal of the causes of the shortfall. Those causes have little to do with economics or demographics, and everything to do with the politics of governments and those who use governments to serve their interests—to the detriment of the general public. But What About the Children?
by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

We have an obligation to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse, and we can do this by increasing communication between state and federal agencies to help combat this repulsive industry. While privacy rights should always be respected in the pursuit of child pornographers, more needs to be done to track down and prosecute the twisted individuals who exploit innocent children.

Do we really want to unleash the state to solve this problem? Not if we understand the dynamics of statism. The power will not be used to solve the problem, but rather to intimidate the population in ways that people will find difficult to object to. The trouble is that the above words were not written by the typically naïve do-gooder, social worker, or Justice Department bureaucrat. They were penned by a spokesman for the Libertarian Party. Entering the Brain-Free Zone
by Garry Reed

"So if these Gun-Free Zones don't stop people from shootin' people, why do they have Gun-Free Zones?"

"I guess that's why some people call them Brain-Free Zones."

"So let's just ignore the freakin' signs and laws and go ahead and have our murderous rampage!"

"Uh, okay, but we have to watch out for those other people."

"What other people?"

"Oh, the conservatives and constitutionalists and libertarians and any other honest people who have guns because they believe in the right to defend themselves."

"You mean we might get shot by a bunch of gun nuts if we try to shoot people?"
