wars: The BBC goes on to make all the usual claims: that biofuels are taking food away from the poor and hungry, that the West is cruel and evil, and that global warming is also (of course) to blame. No one wants to admit that the US dollar is in the toilet, and that it is no wonder that prices in dollars are bad. Nor can we dare discuss that it is government policies around the world that are finally coming home to roost in terms of vast amounts of farmland taken out of production, of farmers not able to do anything but feed pests, and of course, taxation that means that it is insane from a purely monetary point of view to maintain large stocks of grains. This humongous rise in food prices is a panic reaction: in many ways like the rise in fuel prices (which also contributes to it). So we also see panic even in the US, with claims of rationing in big-box stores for rice, flour, and other staples: all blamed (like global warming) on things that exist only in their imaginations. But even panic CAN destroy economies, so we need to prepare for it. See my column on food and biofuels this week here on TPOL. (Read the rest here)
The
New Bogeyman: Worldwide Hunger and Biofuels One of the latest politicians to jump on the latest and greatest bandwagon of the “sky is falling” crowd is Senator Kay B. Hutchinson of Texas, as shown by her article “Undoing America's Ethanol Mistake” in the Investors Business Daily Supposedly a conservative, Hutchinson joins the food-fearmongers and thus betrays her statist, politico, anti-freedom credentials in this article. Although I certainly agree with her call to end government mandates for ethanol, and subsidies as well, her actions do not go far enough and she justifies dozens if not hundreds of new or increased government intervention into the free market for the supposed sake of the environment, the poor, Third World nations, and all kinds of other do-gooder causes and actions. Should
Christians Obey The Antichrist? Even when he was at the height of his glory and fame and at the depth of his depravity, Elvis Presley was uneasy with being called the "King of Rock and Roll."One more than one occasion, Elvis made the point that Jesus was the only King. If only all Christians were as sound as Elvis in their understanding about Who their King really is. I
had never heard of Pastor Mark Jeske of Milwaukee until the other day.
However, some clips from a sermon he preached - captured on YouTube -
epitomize the very dangerous direction in which so many pastors are leading
their flocks nowadays. He preaches what the maker of the video calls "The
New American Theology of Civil Submission." This is the big fat lie
that Christians should just go ahead and do whatever their earthly government
tells them to do. (Read

ALERT! -- Terror Drills Could Go Live! Yesterday an American-flagged ship fired on the Iranian Navy, and now Pentagon sources say that they have been ordered to prepare attack plans. Admiral "Fox" Fallon, the Centcom commander who opposed war with Iran, has been ousted in favor of Bush loyalist General David Petraeus, who has spent the last month accusing Iran for our increasing problems with the Iraqi resistance. Saudi Arabia has been preparing for nuclear fallout from an attack on Iran since last month, when Dick Cheney paid a visit. Israel has just finished its largest-ever domestic war drills. Israel and the Bush administration are insisting that Syria and North Korea are nuclear collaborators. Syria is preparing for the contingency of an Israeli attack. Iran is preparing for the contingency of a US attack. US government insiders speculate that Bush has promised Israel an expanded Middle East war before he leaves office. (Read the rest here)
Now
We Know, Marriage is Cost-Effective It's long been known that family break-up inflicts massive social costs on communities and children. But what about the burden it imposes on the American taxpayer? It's a proven fact that family dissolution places children at greater risk of poverty, mental and physical illness, juvenile delinquency, abuse, substance abuse, and educational failure. A few years ago Wade Horn, former director of the federal Administration for Children and Families, revealed, "My agency spends $46 billion per year operating 65 different social programs. If one goes down the list of these programs... the need for each is either created or exacerbated by the breakup of families and marriages." But what about the impact of heavier demands on the criminal justice system? Medical care services? And losses in tax revenues? At last we have a good idea of the answer. (Read the rest here) All
breadwinners are mercenaries The modern American Freedom Movement is a Dagwood Sandwich stacked high with medallions of Classical Liberals, at least two conflicting flavors of Objectivism, heaping portions of traditional Old-Right conservative laissez-faire capitalists, plentiful helpings of "big L," "little L" and "civil" libertarians, thick slices of Austrians and Chicagoans and Public Choicers, wedges of gradualists and radicals, realists and idealists, purists and big-tenters, rations of Minimal-Statists sautéed with anarchists, salted with anarcho-capitalists, sprinkled with a pinch of agorism, and spiced up with Just Plain Old Curmudgeonly Contrarians, all seasoned to tastelessness with a shakerfull of Iconoclastic Individualism.
With so many cooks stirring the pot, how can anyone agree on a definition of anything, let alone a seemingly simple condiment such as "mercenary?" (Read the rest here) From The Archives I remember my first thought on getting confirmation of the number of dead and wounded at Virginia Tech: "Oh, those poor kids!" But regardless of my very real sympathy for those who died and for those they left behind, a second thought followed hard on its heels: "Oh, our poor Second Amendment!" There are always those who, despite their tears of sympathy, seem to take a perverse delight in such tragedy. " The Brady Campaign was quick to denounce the shootings and, as usual, to blame the gun and the gun laws (or the perceived lack thereof) for what happened. Before we knew for sure who the gunman was or where he got his guns, the Brady Campaign was crowing, "We told you so!" as it claimed that guns are just "too easy to get." Pro-gun groups, on the other hand, declined to capitalize on the killings. The NRA, while expressing sympathy for the victims and their families, said it would have no further comment until the details of the shootings were known. (Read the rest here) The
Future of Freedom Foundation As we now know, thanks to the New York Times, the military-industrial complex is well represented in the daily television news coverage of the Iraq and Afghan occupations. Those former generals who seemed generously to have come out of retirement to provide disinterested analysis of the Bush administration's military adventures are neither generous nor disinterested. Instead, they are self-conscious, self-seeking conduits for the Pentagon's talking points, and well connected to military contractors trying to make money off war. (Read the rest here)
The
Independent Institute Nearly seven years after Sept. 11, 2001, what accounts for the vast discrepancy between the terrorist threat facing America and the scale of our response? Why, absent any evidence of a serious domestic terror threat, is the War on Terror so enormous, so all-encompassing, and still expanding? The fundamental answer is that al Qaedas most important accomplishment was not to hijack our planes, but to hijack our political system. For a multitude of politicians, interest groups, professional associations, corporations, media organizations, universities, local and state governments and federal agency officials, the War on Terror is now a major profit center, a funding bonanza, and a set of slogans and sound bites to be inserted into budget, project, grant and contract proposals. For the country as a whole, however, it has become a maelstrom of waste and worry that distracts us from more serious problems. (Read the rest here)
From The Ludwig von Mises Institute Gas prices are up and oil executives are once again testifying before Congress. Clearly, many politicians, pundits, and consumers lament the rising cost of gas. Before we join them in their chorus, let us take a step back and ask this question: Are gas prices really all that high? A change in price can be a result of inflation, taxes, changes in supply and demand, or any combination of the three. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. External
Articles There remains at present a large constituency of Americans often regarding themselves as libertarian who look back with nostalgia to the founding of the Republic. In their minds eye, the late 18th Century was a noble era when the steely genius of the Founding Fathers forged in the fires of liberty precious documents designed to limit the power of the state over its citizens. These preternaturally wise philosopher-kings wafted above all human temptations for the exercise of power, remaining farseeing moral visionaries steeped in the humanism and rationality of the Enlightenment, keenly aware of the dangers of the state. These noble heroes led a people yearning for freedom to the revolution of 1776, overthrew an increasingly despotic foreign rule, and put in place a system designed to guarantee the liberty of individuals far into the future.
