21, 2008 National politics here in the US dominated news at the first of the week, but more in the nature of analysis instead of actual news: Obama again stuck his foot in his mouth about all of us bitter Americans clinging to our Bible and our guns, but little else happened. The end of the week was dominated by the Popes visit to the US. In the rest of the world, things continued as usual, but again, indications were that something massive might be coming down in the Middle East which would partially explain the speculators success at driving the price of oil (and of gasoline and diesel) to new record highs: $114+ for crude oil and $3.50+ for gasoline, $4.25 for diesel. So the economy (outside the West) continues to totter, and much of the world is holding its breath. Afghan
front: Killing people for peacefully practicing their religion even if it is an evil religion is still an example of just how bad these insurgents and suicide killers are. (Read the rest here)
There
is no Legal Requirement for an Contrary to the government propaganda shoved down our throats when we applied for our first job, there is no legal requirement for an American citizen to have a Social Security number/card as a condition of working or living in the United States. If you go to "Social Security Online, Your Social Security Number And Card" , you will find the following statement: "A
Social Security number is important because you need it to get a job,
collect Social Security benefits and receive some other government services.
Many other businesses, such as banks and credit companies, also ask for
your number." (Read

Was Good for Us! -- The Case against Israel "We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon. ... (These events) swung American public opinion in our favor." -- Ha'aretz, Apr. 16, 2008, "Report: Netanyahu says 9/11 terror attacks good for Israel" -- More than six years after 9/11, the Israel angle becomes more and more acute -- and it becomes harder and harder to be obtuse about it. The circumstantial case for Israeli involvement in the terror attacks grows stronger with each new revelation, old evasion or repeated charge of "anti-Semitism" leveled against those who dare to ask questions. Liberal
Hate Speech May Doom Dems' Election Hopes First it was Rev. Jeremiah Wright's expletive-laced sermons and anti-Semitic rants that plunged the Obama campaign into full damage-repair mode. Then Barack triggered an uproar when he remarked about down-on-their-luck voters, "And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them." That's right, the reason those yahoos place their faith in a Higher Power is because they can't find themselves find a decent job. Then Obama turned on Hillary. During a Pennsylvania campaign stop he twice stuck his opponent with the harsh, "Shame on her." Mocking her new-found support for gun rights, he compared her to a warmed-over Annie Oakley. Moneycrats of Crock They were stunned. The gray, boring, unimaginative breed of moneysucking subhumans known as bureaucrats who inhabit the American enclave variously known as Oz or Wonderland or The District of Crock couldn't believe the headline from Politico.com. Unbelievable headline from Politico.com (February 9, 2007): "Bush Wants Funding Jump for Anti-Drug Ads Rated as Useless."
Paperpushers and Agencycrats from all over Crock gathered in their natural habitat, a gray, boring, unimaginative federal building in the nation's capital, to read the article aloud. (Read the rest here) The
Future of Freedom Foundation President Bush acts like a teenager with a credit card and rich parents. He never sees the bill, so he just buys what he wants and charges it. The problem is that instead of rich parents, this president has debt-ridden taxpayers and a gutted military. A few days before Gen. David Petraeus confirmed for Congress how overworked the military is in Iraq Bush has now promised to shorten the tours from 15 to 12 months the president was in Croatia talking about the significance of that countrys and Albanias invitations to join NATO. The
Independent Institute By signing legislation creating Medicare Part D, George W. Bush became responsible for the most significant expansion of the welfare state since LBJ's Great Society. It turns out, though, that forcing taxpayers to help buy Granny's meds was the proverbial camel's nose of big Republican government. So what was next? The overhaul of financial market regulation announced recently by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, which, if adopted, would extend the federal government's reach more so than any policy initiative since the New Deal. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute Capitalism should not be condemned, since we haven't had capitalism. A system of capitalism presumes sound money, not fiat money manipulated by a central bank. Capitalism cherishes voluntary contracts and interest rates that are determined by savings, not credit creation by a central bank. It's not capitalism when the system is plagued with incomprehensible rules regarding mergers, acquisitions, and stock sales, along with wage controls, price controls, protectionism, corporate subsidies, international management of trade, complex and punishing corporate taxes, privileged government contracts to the military-industrial complex, and a foreign policy controlled by corporate interests and overseas investments. Add to this centralized federal mismanagement of farming, education, medicine, insurance, banking and welfare. This is not capitalism! Articles In the past, former President Bill Clinton has been frank enough to admit that his party and administration lost momentum and public support eventually, control of Congress by promoting radical left-wing agendas far beyond what most Americans will easily tolerate. The former president specifically attributed the loss of Congress in 1994 to the ill-considered efforts of the far-left wing of his party to further restrict lawful gun ownership. But before that, there was another issue the revealed to the public just how far out in left field some of those surrounding President Clinton really were. And that issue was socialized medicine. Waco Still Matters Every year for the last five years [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], I have written an article commemorating the Waco siege: the 51-day standoff from February 28 to April 19, 1993, between government agents ATF, FBI and US military and the Branch Davidians: a conflict ending in a conflagration that consumed the lives of 76 civilians, including 21 children. That Ive written about this so consistently raises some questions: Am I obsessed? Why do I, and a number of other commentators, feel the need to keep bringing up this sad episode in modern American history? Waco still matters. Not just because it has become the paradigmatic symbol for federal police power gone out of control. Not just because it starkly demonstrates the American governments militarism unleashed against its own people. Not just because it showcases the propensity of politicians and law enforcers to deceitfully cover and obscure their wrongful actions. No, Wacos still important mostly because it shows exactly what happens when people resist the unjust incursions of their own government, including under democracy.
