Libertarian Commentary on The News, 30 March - 05 April, '08
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

A short column this week, touching on a lot of stories, but not in much detail.

American union:
Colombia trade pact to land amid hostile Congress
USA Today
“President Bush said he will Tuesday send Congress a controversial trade agreement with Colombia, setting up a high-stakes legislative showdown that is likely to keep trade at the center of political debate for months. The president opted to force a congressional vote over the objections of Democrats, who warned the deal may become the first trade agreement ever rejected by Congress. The president’s move, which he said was needed to assure that Congress votes before adjourning this year, marked the first time a trade deal has been sent to Capitol Hill without congressional leaders’ approval.” (04/07/08)

The baboons, especially those with fingers in the drug trade (too many), will no doubt support this, even though they may scream loudly about how they will not. I expect it to pass, if not as handily as previous ones.

Mama's Note: Ask yourself one question here. Who benefits from these "agreements" between governments? The people who are producing the things they want to trade, or government - or others who produce things and wish to eliminate the competition? Absolute free trade is the only answer. The Real ID Act proves the Federal Government is Not the All Powerful Oz
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Real ID "is a nationwide effort intended to prevent terrorism, reduce fraud, and improve the reliability and accuracy of identification documents that State governments issue." (FN-1) Under the Act, States will have until 2013 to reissue all drivers' licenses and make them conform to standards set by the federal government. Individuals will have to renew their licenses in person and show a photo identification. In addition, license holders will have to produce documents that verify their home address, date of birth, and Social Security number. (FN-2)

If a State does not meet the standards set by the federal government, its citizens will not be able to use their license for federal identification purposes. Thus, they will not be able to board an airplane or enter a federal building. This is the only penalty imposed for noncompliance. (Read the rest here)

False Flag Advisory -- Bush and Israel
By Major William B. Fox
and Captain Eric H. May

From Alert to Advisory

Last week we published "False Flag Alert -- April 7-11" to the American people on the Internet.  Since Israel was running its largest-ever domestic military exercises during the week, everything necessary for a false flag attack was ready.  A "false flag" refers to an attack carried out by one government to be blamed on another, usually in order to create an excuse to start a war.

We pointed out the numerous and substantial indicators from both the United States and Israel that a war with Iran might be in the works.  Since current US public opinion will not support a unilateral war against Iran, we focused on the distinct possibility that Israel or the Bush administration might manufacture public support for a war by carrying out a false flag attack against a US military target abroad or a US civilian target at home. The Church of Oprah, The Church of Bush
By Doug Newman

A YouTube video entitled “The Church of Oprah Exposed” received well over 3 million views in its first 17 days in cyberspace. It deals with the New Age spiritual agenda that has become so much a part of the Oprah Winfrey Show. It is definitely worth watching. The most influential woman in television history is leading her massive audience in a very dangerous direction. At about the two-minute mark of this seven-minute video, the narrator states:

“Today she has turned millions of her adoring fans over to New Age doctrine. Christians are letting this into their homes and are being deceived.” (Read the rest here)

The Sad Spectacle of Dee Dee Myers
By Carey Roberts

Dee Dee Myers has just come out with her amusing tale, Why Women Should Rule the World. You may recall Mrs. Myers was the first female White House press secretary, appointed during the first two tumultuous years of the Clinton administration.

Simply put, Myers is a female supremacist. "Women tend to be better communicators, better listeners, better at forming consensus," she argues. That entitles women to run the world because they do everything better than those power-hungry men, Myers believes. (Read the rest here)

Committing the Crime of Free Speech

The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Real Headline: "2nd man charged in terrorism TV case"

HeraldSunWorldStar DailyNewsTimesExaminer TelegraphPress report: Two men with foreign, suspicious-sounding names, Elahwal and Iqbal, were arrested for the capitalistic entrepreneurial crime of using satellite dishes to distribute Hezbollah television station broadcasts to their New York-area customers. Since the USSA government designated the station, al Manar, as a global terrorist entity, the two men face five-year prison terms for stupidly believing that freedom of speech exists in America. The thinking, apparently, is that anyone watching a terrorist TV station is guilty of aiding global terrorism. (Read the rest here)

The Future of Freedom Foundation
The Ultimate Tax Cut
by Jacob G. Hornberger

When the idea of an income-tax-free society is posed to a modern-day American, oftentimes the reaction to such a radical idea is shock. “Why, that would be anarchy!” the American sometimes responds. But that notion would have come as a surprise to our American ancestors, who lived in a society with a fully functioning federal government and no income taxation for more than 100 years.

Why did our American ancestors oppose income taxation? Because they had discovered an important point: People cannot be free in a society in which the government has the power to levy taxes on income. To put it another way, people are free only when they have the ability to keep everything they earn and decide for themselves what to do with their own money. (Read the rest here)

Key to Getting a More Restrained Foreign Policy: Modify Defense Subcontracting?
By Ivan Eland

During the early days of the Clinton administration, Colin Powell, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, cringed when Madeleine Albright implied that because the United States had such a big, beautiful military, it should be willing to use it promiscuously overseas. After the debacle in Iraq, the growing group of those who desire a more restrained foreign policy—liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and independents—should still be cringing.

Thus, the problematical hyperactive U.S. foreign policy did not arise with President George W. Bush, but has existed through Democratic and Republican administrations since Harry S Truman was president. Although George W. Bush was especially gullible and incompetent in attempting his armed, nation-building fiasco in Iraq, the hyperactivity in U.S. foreign affairs is mainly structural. (Read the rest here)

Oh Keynesian, Where Art Thou?
by Mateusz Machaj

Almost everyone has something to say about the current crisis and the serious trouble our little greenback friend is in. We are about to be reminded that empires do not fall because of barbarians at the gates, wars of civilizations, or free trade. It's the inflation that kills them.
