Libertarian Commentary on The News, 30 March - 05 April, '08
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

This week, let us start with some medical matters:

Medical Issues:
Government stakes claim to every newborn's DNA
World Net Daily
An Orwellian plan that has state and federal governments staking claim to the ownership of every newborn's DNA in perpetuity is advancing under the radar of most privacy rights activists, but would turn the United States' citizenry into a huge pool of subjects for involuntary scientific experimentation, according to one organization alarmed over the issue. Lawmakers in Minnesota recently endorsed a proposal that would exempt stockpiles of DNA information already being collected from every newborn there from any sort of consent requirements, meaning researchers could utilize the DNA of more than 780,000 Minnesota children for any sort of research project whatsoever, Brase said. The National Conference of State Legislatures, in fact, lists for all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia the various statutes or regulatory provisions under which newborns' DNA is being collected. Such programs are offered as "screening" requirements to detect treatable illnesses. They vary as to exactly what tests are done but the Health Resources and Services Administration has requested a report that would "include a recommendation for a uniform panel of conditions." Further, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., is on record proposing a plan that would turn the program into a consolidated nationwide effort. … "researchers already are looking for genes related to violence, crime and different behaviors." The Heartland Regional Genetics and Newborn Screening is one of the organizations that advocates for more screening and research. It proclaims in its vision statement a desire to see newborns screened for 200 conditions. It also forecasts "every student … with an individual program for education based on confidential interpretation of their family medical history, their brain imaging, their genetic predictors of best learning methods…"

This is the eugenics of “Brave New World” and “1984” and Star Trek’s Kahn, not the benign genetic research and repair of Heinlein’s “Beyond This Horizon” (although that society had developed out of a history of just such evil as this and the chimeras now being grown and killed in the UK). God, Guts and Guns
By Colonal Dan

“God, Guts and Guns made America great” This little phrase is really insightful when you think about it. The essence of undeniable truth is oft times most profound in simple brevity. In this case, much of America’s greatness is summed up in just seven words. The three elements credited in that expression played more of a role in making America the greatest country in history than most other attributes we can name. In fact, many other contributing factors sprang from one, if not all three of these. Give this some thought and you’ll find the truth behind it is apparent. (Read the rest here)

The Ultimate Reason Why Government Education Fails
By Doug Newman

Henry David Thoreau once stated that "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking the root." All this incessant blathering about political correctness, prayer, declining academic standards, evolution, creation, condoms, sex education, gay curricula, race relations, affirmative action, busing, standardized testing, bullying, guns, drugs, discipline, dress codes, Christmas celebrations and so forth merely hacks at the branches. The root of the problem is that we let the government run the schools and that we never question our presuppositions about government education. (Read the rest here)

A General Debate on Iraq: Odom vs. Petraeus
By Captain Eric H. May - Military Correspondent

Lt. General William E. Odom - General Odom, a retired three-star, is an all-star in my book. His testimony Wednesday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was a serious strategic analysis of our shockingly awful quicksand war in Iraq. The former Army Assistant Chief Of Staff for Intelligence spoke truth to power, just in case power was listening.

Rather than analyze his analysis, I can best simply present it to the interested reader. If you wonder why it is that you haven't yet read much by or about such a singularly clearheaded general, you're on the right track to discovering how (and for whom) the mainstream media really works. As a smattering of quotations will bear out, he had it right when he wrote an Oct. 3, 2005 essay, What's Wrong with Cutting and Running? (Read the rest here)

Politically Incorrect Movie Reviews
10,000 BC
By RadioFree Rocky D

When I first saw the movie title 10,000 BC, I thought it was the story of John McCain’s first campaign (insert rimshot here, hyuck-hyuck-hyuck). Now I don’t mind suspending belief for a movie; after all this is where the popularity for Star Trek, Indiana Jones, et al, comes from, but you’d think the makers of 10,000 BC would get something historically accurate. Did you know that 10,000 years ago people rode horses like cowboys, forged steel, built pyramids, had sophisticated sailboats, domesticated work animals and had a written language? Maybe the blame for this lies with publik skool, since guv’mint edjumacaters cannot even get War Between The States history right. 10,000 BC is Rambo meets the Flintstones, as large hairy beasts rumble across the screen chased by smaller, less hairy beasts. You know this is fiction when you see a giant cockfight and there’s not a Mexican in sight. (Read the rest here)

Do Female Politicians Represent an 'Ethical and Pure' Force?
By Carey Roberts

Hillary Clinton has famously claimed that "Research shows the presence of women raises the standards of ethical behavior and lowers corruption." Ironically it's Mrs. Clinton who has now come under withering criticism as her ethical lapses and make-believe claims become legion. Hillary still hasn't come clean on where her $5 million campaign loan came from. She refused to release her Senate earmark requests, even after Barack Obama made known his list. Most comical of all, she claimed that she and daughter Chelsea had to duck sniper fire during a 1996 trip to Bosnia. "We were basically told to run to our cars," Clinton told her audience.

Oh well, it made for a good sound-bite. (Read the rest here)

The Libertarian's Legitimate Litmus Lessons"
by Garry Reed

Since that offering bombed as well, it's only natural that I press forward with my current contribution to the culture, "The Libertarian's Legitimate Litmus Lessons."

(Caveat: This is an in-joke. If you're not a libertarian, you won't get it. If you're a libertarian but don't have a sense of humor, you shouldn't read it. If you disagree with me, don't bother sending me nasty emails because libertarians never agree with each other anyway.) (Read the rest here)

The Most Powerful and Awful Spell
by Bob Wallace

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Why do I call what he said a spell? That word, "spell," literally means "to talk," or "tale." I certainly don't believe in toe of dog, wing of bat, or Love Potion Number Nine for that matter, but it's not even debatable that spells exist. People can be enchanted, or better yet, ensorcelled, if they are susceptible to it, by mere words. The point is moot. (Read the rest here)

Supreme Court Confronts ‘Right to Bear Arms’ in Case
By Stephen P. Halbrook

“That would be an odd ‘right of the people’ if limited to militias,” commented Chief Justice John Roberts in the Supreme Court hearing March 18 in District of Columbia v. Heller.

The case concerns whether the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns violates the Second Amendment guarantee that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Referring to the American Revolution, Justice Antonin Scalia noted that “tyrants took away the people’s weapons, not just those of the militia.”(Read the rest here)

The Myth of the Just Price
Laurence M. Vance

The term just price is customarily disguised with a euphemism. So, just like SCHIP, Medicare, and Medicaid are never called socialized medicine, and just like refundable tax credits are never referred to as income transfer programs, attempts to establish a just price are usually cloaked in terms of market failure remedies or consumer protection laws. The mention of just price theory either invokes a blank stare, or, in the case of those familiar with the term, the dismissal of the notion as a discredited medieval religious doctrine.

All myths, of course, are not created equal. For instance: The use of the term just price is very different from another widely held myth — that of the just war. The principle of the just war underlies our protracted war in Iraq, as well as our global crusade against terrorism. In its essence, the doctrine concerns the use of force: when force should be used and what kind of force is acceptable. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Why Wal-Mart Should Have Taken Its Money From the Brain-Damaged Woman
by J. H. Huebert

What Olbermann and other critics failed to understand is that seeking subrogation from Ms. Shank has nothing at all to do with corporate greed. Wal-Mart, which is self-insured, has a fiduciary duty – the highest possible duty under the law – to all of its health plan members to seek subrogation when it can, to keep all the plan members' premiums as low as possible. If Wal-Mart doesn't keep costs down like that, premiums will go up, and fewer Wal-Mart employees will be able to afford health care at all. (And then, one can imagine, the likes of Mr. Olbermann will criticize Wal-Mart for that.)

To be clear: the money Wal-Mart would have recouped from Mrs. Shank would not have enhanced Wal-Mart's bottom line. Instead, that money would go to Wal-Mart's health plan to pay for other people's health care. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
