Libertarian Commentary on The News, 23 - 29 March, '08
By Nathan A. Barton © 2008

For some reason, this week, a number of prime examples of “stupid cop tricks” have shown up, warning us that conditions on the home front are NOT getting any better where cops or the nanny state are concerned. Once again, this week, I am seeing that there is little coverage of oil prices and gasoline and diesel prices, even though (despite a slight drop early in the week) oil remains well over $100 a barrel, the average gasoline price well over $3.00/gallon, and diesel gets nearer and nearer a $4.00/gallon average. This is really, really killing our economy; far worse than the greed of mortgage lenders and nearly as bad as the mad spenders in Congress Assembled. But perhaps the idea is that if we pretend it isn’t happening, it will all go away. Still, there is good news bubbling up… especially for those of us committed to liberty in the West, which I’ll start with.

Economic news:
ND: Bakken oil development underway
Kiplinger
A new black gold rush is under way, this time in North Dakota. The potential payoff is huge -- up to 100 billion barrels of oil. That’s twice the size of Alaska’s reserves and potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades. Until now, the obstacles to production seemed overwhelming. The crude oil is locked away in rocks that are buried miles underground in the Bakken Play, a field that stretches into Montana and Saskatchewan, Canada.

The Kiplinger’s report is very understated: at least three reports indicate that the Bakken shale has around 500 BILLION barrels: one small field on the Montana side of the line has proven reserves of 5 million barrels per square mile: comparable to the “sea of oil” in Saudi Arabia. And although Kiplinger’s talks about years of development of infrastructure, the truth is, the Williston Basin is an old and once-mature piece of the Oil Patch and has much of the infrastructure necessary to get the black gold flowing. As with other parts of the Rocky Mountain West, the drastic rise in the price of oil and the weakness of the dollar is having a strong positive impact on the region. Whether we can hold out against the depression of the coasts is still to be seen, but there is a chance. (Read the rest here)

A Flag for Your Son
By Michael Gaddy

When a people choose to worship the idol called the state as their savior, the natural progression will require that eventually they sacrifice themselves or members of their family to insure the growth and survival of this false god.

A flag for your son, father, brother, husband, uncle, nephew or cousin; a flag-draped cold metal box for your mother, sister, wife, aunt, or niece. Of course, the pagan god will refuse any attempt to photograph these sacrifices, returned from the fields of conquest and death, claiming they are protecting the families, while in reality they seek to protect themselves from any awakening to the truth that might occur among their worshipers (slaves). Spring Fling in Iran? -- Updating World War III
By Captain Eric H. May - Military Correspondent

The very term "global war" is a mere euphemism for World War III. We are caught up in it now, a vast struggle with no end in sight. The 2008 United States presidential election won’t change things, since it will simply pit a Republican who truly promises a war without end against a Democrat who falsely promises to end the war. It will be a meaningless coin toss: heads, war wins; tails, peace loses.

Many intellectuals, both those far to the right and far to the left, agree about this much. They also agree about the beginning date for the ongoing world war: September 11, 2001. (Read the rest here)

Busting Barflies in Bars only the Beginning?
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

Compiled from three NBC 5 news reports, Dallas: Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission undercover agents entered 36 nightclubs where they shared tables with suspected drunks and covertly monitored bartenders for over-serving patrons. After agents determined that some individuals posed a risk to themselves or the public, 30 people were arrested for public intoxication. Sgt. Chris Hamilton of the TABC justified the preemptive strikes by noting that some inebriated bar patrons "end up killing themselves or someone else" in drunk driving accidents. Some hotel bar patrons were staying at the hotel, but having a room is no defense for public intoxication. As criminal defense attorney Barry Sorrels explained to Channel 5 News, the key to the law lies in the potential danger. TABC officials said the sweep concerned saving lives, not individual rights.

Politically Incorrect Movie Reviews
The Da Vinci Code
By RadioFree Rocky D

This film may lead to hearing loss. Your right ear will be assaulted by Christian folk nattering, “It’s-fiction-ya-know-it’s-fiction-ya-know” and your left ear will be inundated by anti-Christians jabbering, “It’s-true-ya-know-it’s-true-ya-know.” Friends, I’ve read THE BOOK and seen THE MOVIE and I can tell you that The Da Vinci Code actually does commit a grave sin that begins with a “B.” No, not blasphemy – boredom. Once this flick comes out on DVD, people will wear out their “play” buttons thinking this slow-moving turkey is on pause. This movie is so dull it could put Jesus Himself to sleep – and it’s about Him. One thing is sure; only Christianity is expected to endure a backhanded insult such as The Da Vinci Code. You will never see Hollyweird make a movie impugning Judaism, Buddhism or even the new-age wacky Wiccans. Hell, Hollyweird is positively frightened to even show a single image of Muhammad. So why all the Christian-bashing? Simple. It’s trendy. And to Hollyweird, to not be trendy would be a real sin. (Read the rest here)

Why the Peaceful Majority of Muslims Are Not Irrelevant
by Sheldon Richman

A few years ago, FrontPageMag.com columnist Paul Marek wrote an article titled “Why the Peaceful Majority Is Irrelevant”. His thesis was that even if the majority of Muslims abhor violence, it doesn’t matter because “the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.... The hard quantifiable fact is, that the ‘peaceful majority’ is the ‘silent majority’ and it is cowed and extraneous.” For Marek, the upshot is this: “We must pay attention to the only group that counts: the fanatics who threaten our way of life.” (Read the rest here)

Climate Change and the Choice of Life
by Clifford F. Thies

The emerging discipline of climatology is an interesting one. It has no laboratory. Instead, various measurements are put into computer models to see the extent to which they are consistent with the hypothesis that human activity has contributed to the trend of global warming. Unable to conduct experiments, all climatologists can do is examine statistical correlations.

In my field of economics, we have generally dismissed inferences based on mere correlations. Such things as interest rates, inflation, the unemployment rate, and real GDP growth are highly trended. Almost necessarily, they are highly correlated over discrete periods of time. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Engraved Invitation - To Steal
by L. Neil Smith

These are the same worthies who are instructed by their bosses to lie in court if that's what it takes to get a conviction, who employ "testing procedures" -- with no written or objectively established protocols -- to incriminate innocent gun owners, and who think nothing of destroying the businesses of gun dealers based on questionable evidence. What these latterday goose-steppers wanted, from the lowest bidder willing to supply them, was 2000 Leatherman Micra combination tools. ATF wanted their Micras blue (mine are stainless), and they wanted them especially engraved, to wit: ATF-Asset Forfeiture - and - Always Think Forfeiture (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Global warming and cooling, according to our more down-to-earth earth-sciences scientists, seem to occur in 1,500-year cycles. People's lifespans - something like 35 years or so for century after century before capitalism came along and, much to the chagrin of lefty hollow-head Marxist anti-capitalists who still blindly deny it, extended the average life expectancy out to 70 or 80 years or so - were just too short for people grubbing in the ground for their grub in the form of grub worms to take much notice of these great climate shifts.
