March
17, 2008 The Ides of March are upon us, and no tyrant is worried, alas. American
Collapse: Not in this story but elsewhere: It takes 1.56 dollars to buy a Euro (a 11.33 oz Coke in Germany normally costs a Euro). Diesel prices are as high as $4.11 per gallon, and the LOWEST regular gasoline prices are $2.899 in Colorado; the national view is worse: most of California has unleaded prices over $3.55 a gallon, and $4.00 a gallon diesel is the average over much of the country. (AP) Gold, which has soared to record levels in the past year, hit a new milestone Thursday, rising to $1,000 an ounce for the first time in futures trading Not a lot of this is getting put out in a timely manner, but rumors are sweeping the nation. The dollar is collapsing (which is what is triggering the gold price, oil price, and fuel prices, as well as the credit crunch); the Fed may drop the prime rate to ZERO, massive unemployment (50%?) is due in a matter of two years (or less), and more. I think the West (NOT California and probably not Arizona, Oregon, or Washington) might do much better than the rest of the world, and especially than the US, but it is coming. I fear that none of us are prepared. Mama's Note: And, just as it was in the 1030s, the more the government tries to prop things up, the longer the depression will last and the more damage it will do to everyone... except those on top, of course. You can believe that the politicians and bankers at the top of the heap probably won't be in any bread lines or freeze to death. You don't think they're holding any "dollars" do you? 'I’m a War Criminal' McCain The Republican Party, in its search for consistency, has now nominated a confessed war criminal to be its presidential nominee. Having a war criminal for president for the past eight years, at least now the republicans have a candidate who admits it. While John McCain states that he signed a confession admitting to being a war criminal after being tortured repeatedly, this was most likely the only time in his military/political career he embraced the truth. Still, there are many in the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action community, including former POWs, who have their doubts about McCain ever being tortured while a Prisoner of War, and actually believe he received preferential treatment at the hands of the North Vietnamese, Russians and Cubans. Iraqi Puppies Hate Our Freedom And Democracy? America, we are told, is Fighting A Holy War Not Only For Our Own National Survival But For The Survival Of Western Civilization Against Radical Islamofascist Terrorist Fundamentalist Extremists Who Hate Us And Our Freedom And Democracy And Who Want To Take Away That Freedom And Democracy And Undermine Our Very Way Of Life And KILL US ALL! Do these devils incarnate include Iraqi puppies? This week, a video of an American marine laughing and joking while throwing a puppy off a cliff went viral on YouTube. I DO NOT believe this scumbag represents the huge majority of our troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. The troops have been lied to profusely. Most, in my opinion, genuinely believe they are leaving home, hearth and Xbox to do a good work for their country. (Read the rest here) A
Nigerian Scam Much as I would LOVE to turn this over to the local Leigh constituency branch of the British libertarian party, or even the Tory or Social Democrat-Liberal branch to use as ammo to attack the most likely corrupt "Honorable" Burnham, MP, it probably is obvious even to the average Leigh voter that this is bogus. Now, my point. If we can see this as the fraud it is, why on EARTH do we allow politicians to constantly defraud us on similar "share-the-wealth" schemes like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, oil-company taxation, $700 billion "investment schemes" and such like? Mr. Burnham is most likely is NOT the author of this pathetic little scam spam, but based on his career and his associations, he is probably party to far bigger swindles than the mere 14 million GBP supposedly involved in this; like the vast increase in NHS funding which has been so touted by both the Blair and Brown Labourite governments and which has led to longer waiting lines than ever for basic medical care in the UK. 'Peace' in a Crowded Classroom An Indiana teacher who told her elementary school class that she honked while driving past a peace demonstration when she saw a sign that said "Honk for Peace" was fired from her job and is now suing her former school.
In a meeting, the father of one of the little girls in the class pointed at the teacher while telling the school's principal, "I want her to promise never to mention the word peace in her class again." (Since, as libertarians have frequently observed, there is no meaningful difference between today's Red State and Blue State authoritarian political beliefs, it's impossible to tell whether the little girl's war-adoring daddy was a Bleeding Heart Liberal or a Compassionate Conservative Neocon.) 3/11 "Buffalo" Market -- (A Date Code Decode) The Federal Reserve caused the 3/11 stock market surge with an infusion of $200 billion. Wall Street stampeded like a thirst-crazed herd that had caught the whiff of water. Before the closing bell on Tuesday, the bulls had trampled the bears, and the Dow Jones industrial average had posted 416 points, its biggest gain in five years. The Fed's 3/11 money bomb was a welcome variation of the 3/11 Madrid bomb. Inside traders and moneylenders, dependable Bush League backers and beneficiaries, made their bucks without blasting or bleeding the public, in contrast to the pre-9/11 profit plot in which inside traders, or better yet, traitors, made heavy negative bets ("put options") that American Airlines and United Airlines would crash. A few days later, on 9/11, the airlines did crash -- into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. Needless to say, the Bush administration has quashed any investigation of how its friends knew about the new Pearl Harbor in advance. (Read the rest here) Harsh
Domestic Violence Laws Recall Jim Crow Abuses It's no secret that our nation's crusade to stop domestic violence has been a magnificent flop. Researchers have been saying that for years. Three years ago professor William Wells of Southern Illinois University did a comprehensive analysis of domestic violence programs in California. "There was no statistically significant relationship between any criminal justice system response and victimization for either gender or for any racial or ethnic group," he concluded. Even government bureaucrats see no point in whitewashing the truth. "We have no evidence to date that VAWA [Violence Against Women Act] has led to a decrease in the overall levels of violence against women," writes Angela Parmley, PhD, acting chief at the National Institute of Research in the Department of Justice. The Archives The 7 C's: Contemplation, Courtesy, Communication, Co-operation, Cajolery, Control, Coercion "Political spectrums" are used to diagnose and categorize attitudes toward government. This 7 C's "ideological spectrum" I've been contemplating for some time, I perceive as a broader tool relating to social attitudes or human relations. It seems reasonable to suggest that individuals generally lean toward one side of this spectrum or the other, and that as a majority (the herd) in society shift their thinking and behavior toward using Courtesy, or toward Control and Coercion, its institutional mechanisms gradually reflect those shifts. Morality,
Empire, and the Obfuscation of the New Atheism The current generation of atheism advocates (apologists does not seem the appropriate term) hold the position that belief in a transcendent divinity is not necessary for the development of a human system of ethics. In this belief is an unspoken rebuttal to those who would argue that morality, as conjured in a space and time beyond transcendence, beggars most, if not all, likely probabilities. These advocates stress, as a substitute for a divinely inspired source of revelatory morality, the theme of human solidarity, the nebulous phenomena produced ex nihilo to promote the survival of the tribe and species. Crucial to this idea, which bases itself on scientific analysis of the human condition, is the study of that condition within the landscape of human civilizations. (Read the rest here)

Government's Chickens Are Back When a private company screws up, there is no shortage of people demanding more government intrusion in the marketplace. But when the government screws up, they don't call for less government. They call for more. The economy is slowing down, and the government is at fault. But, if anything, the policymakers and pundits want the government to do more of what got us into trouble in the first place. If a lot of poison is bad, a lot more is somehow good. That's the logic of statism. (Read the rest here)
From The Ludwig von Mises Institute Inflation
Is a Policy that Cannot Last To Austrian economists, the so-called international credit market crisis is a prima facie case of the inherent destructive tendency of government-controlled paper money: it is the consequence of an excessive expansion of credit and money, which encourages uneconomic investment and leads to unsustainable debt burdens. The inflation-provoked cluster of errors (this time in the financial sphere) eventually triggers an economic and political disaster. Once the inflation-fueled boom (the time span in which malinvestment occurs) is about to turn into bust (the period in which malinvestment is corrected), the government-sponsored central bank steps in and lowers the interest rate, in an effort to reverse the economic downswing into a boom. This is because a policy of pushing down the interest rate via expanding credit and money supply is typically seen as the solution for, rather than the very cause of, the crisis. Articles Keen-eyed observers of the Mad Scientist wing of the American military research complex have noted that the Pentagon is at it again. With so many billions of taxbucks tied up in building last century's mega-weaponry, such as fighters and bombers and aircraft carriers and Humvees sprouting grenade launchers and Stinger missiles, one would think there would be nothing left over for dabbling in the development of "non-lethal" esoteric, futuristic Weapons of Mass Derision. One would be wrong. Last summer it was the Gay Bomb. Reports from CBS3.com in Berkeley described experiments with a form of chemical warfare designed to turn rampaging enemy soldiers into raging homosexuals after exposure to a hormone bomb, causing them to jump each others bones and forget all about fighting. Baptists to Save the World (Not Like Matthew 28, Though) Hallelujah! The Southern Baptists have finally found themselves an issue in which they can be praised of men! Don't underestimate the effects of these secular outcries against the Southern Baptists. They found them quite upsetting. After all, didn't Jesus tell his disciples that if they played their cards right, the world would welcome them with open arms? So it is with palpable relief that the Baptist leaders announced their fealty with their co-religionists in the global warming creed. They did so in a declaration released Monday, March 10. The declaration appears weighted according to three principles: Biblical stewardship, prudence, and caring for the poor. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
