March
03, 2008 Although it is not in the news much, we are seeing some tremendous changes in the national and world economy. The inflation due to exploding energy costs is hitting hard, and it is this as much as other factors that is causing the crash in real estate prices and the continuing devaluation of the dollar. This is NOT, say again NOT, necessarily bad news. It opens some tremendous opportunities for each of us and the cause of human liberty and freedom. At the same time, the great DC gun case is nearing its oral arguments in front of the Supremes (in mid-March) and more and more is coming out about that. A good thing about this kind of business is that you get a much better idea of who your enemies and friends are and just as important, it helps make OTHERS aware that some so-called friends are anything but. The position that the Bush Administration is taking should make it clear to a good many reluctant people that GWB is no friend of liberty, and has demonstrated to more and more people that he is not a conservative. And perhaps there is hope even for the most evil, as Cheneys break with GWB might (MIGHT!) indicate. Other things come out too, as the lead story today illustrates. (Read the rest here)
When
Rights Collide States
consider anti-property gun access laws Is your right to control your own property absolute, or subject to the needs of others? A dear friend and I had quite a serious discussion about this in email last week. My friend insists that such access laws would not be a violation of property rights, or if so, necessary to preserve the greater right of self defense. He agreed that we should all be free to decide who comes on our property and what is done with it, but somehow an employer should not be able to prohibit an employee from storing a gun in their vehicle. He also said that, in the event of private ownership of such things as roads, that nobody should be able to prohibit the customers from carrying a gun either. I have not yet figured out how that's supposed to work. You either own your property or you don't. You control it completely - or you don't own it! (Read the rest here) The
Inherent Contradiction of Government The answer is a seemingly-bizarre contradiction inherent in government. Government’s premise is that people, individuals, are not competent or able to run their own lives, or at least some part of those lives. Indeed, the fundamental theorem of government means that we are not competent even to choose who should advise us on those things which we are not competent to do for ourselves. Government has a way to decide for people what they are not competent to decide for themselves. This is for an “elite” to do, whether that elite consists of one person (a dictator, king, or emperor) or a group (oligarchy, nobility, theocracy, technocracy, etc.). This elite is selected in some way: by raw power exercised by that elite itself, by divine intervention (or the claim of such), or (in the case of “democracy”) by the people whom it is claimed have the inherent power (given by God) to rule. It is this last that concerns us in the United States today, and with the idea that democracy is perfectible. We assume that the same people whom, as a basic premise of government, are incapable of running their own lives (or even of hiring experts to help them run their lives), ARE capable of voting into power an elite group of experts who will be able to run their lives for them. reasons to love global warming All cranked up over global warming? Why? It's happened before and humans just like you survived it, so why not this time around? It's nothing new. The last recorded temperature uptick was known as the Medieval Warm Period, a time of unusually balmy weather, which lasted (depending on who's doing the figgerin') from around 800 to 1300 AD. The warm period was presumably preceded by a cold period, else how did anyone know it was a warm period? It was, in fact, followed by a cold period, known today as the Little Ice Age, which ran on Broadway and all over the Northern Hemisphere from (again, approximations) 1250 to 1850 AD. 'Shame on You, Barack Obama' Every time her campaign hits a rough spot, Hillary Clinton has artfully played the role of defender of the downtrodden or misty-eyed damsel-in-distress. But the sympathy vote began to tire of that routine. So now Mrs. Clinton has taken on a new role: Mother Superior. First the Clinton campaign accused opponent Barack Obama of "plagiarism" for borrowing a couple lines written by Massachusetts governor Patrick Duvall. A close friend of Obama, Duvall was flattered by the move, but Hillary was ready to haul out the rope noose. (Read the rest here)
Spook
and Nuke - GOP Primary Tactic HOUSTON, Feb. 29 -- Cmdr. Brian Klock, a Navy Reserve intelligence officer, is on a mission to gain control of Southeast Texas Congressional District 22, the same petro-patch that once belonged to Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. A strong showing in Tuesday's state Republican primary could put him in a runoff contest for the Republican nomination of this most Republican area. Several of the 10 candidates vying for the party nomination have military and military contractor backgrounds. If none of them garners a majority of the primary votes, then Klock could become a viable runoff candidate. It's hard to imagine a more menacing figure than DeLay, known as "The Hammer" and "The Exterminator" before corruption charges ended his career, but Klock succeeds in spades. (Read the rest here)

The Archives I have always said that there's nothing wrong with this country that going back to the Constitution couldn't fix. It has long been my contention that, though liberals insist the Constitution is a "living" document intended to "evolve with the times," the Founding Fathers wrote what they meant and meant what they wrote. It turns out I was kind of right, but completely wrong. On Day Two of the Freedom Summit, one of the featured speakers was well-known pro-freedom author, Boston T. Party. Having long been an admirer of his, I couldn't wait to hear his speech. But in his opening remarks, Boston said that he was tired of those "whiners" who kept saying, "I just wanna go back to the Consti-tooooooo-shun!" Well, since I'm one of them, I was just a little offended by that remark. But what he said next was so shocking that it literally suspended time between one breath and the next. "Folks, we're living under the Constitution right now!" I sat there with my mouth open, considering dozens of things I might say to refute his assertion, and that's when it struck me with the force of a lightning bolt: Boston is right. The Future of Freedom Foundation InfraGard:
An Unhealthy Government Alliance
There is an organization that is quietly and secretly becoming very large and powerful. The FBI started this partnership or alliance between the federal government and the private sector in 1996 in Cleveland with a few select people. After September 11, 2001, when the general population replaced their rationality with fear, this organization, called InfraGard, continued growing, and with little notice. By 2005 more than 11,000 members were involved, but as of today, according to the InfraGard website, there are 23,682 members, including FBI personnel. At first glance, many would think this alliance healthy and useful in the fight against terrorism, but upon further examination, one has to wonder. (Read the rest here)

Commission that Should Cause Concern Washington commissions typically elicit little more than a yawn. Their numerous unread reports gather dust on shelves all over the city, from Foggy Bottom to Capitol Hill. So why should we be concerned about legislation, approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in October and now pending in the Senate, to establish a bipartisan National Commission on the Prevention of Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism? Dont we want to prevent these things? Yes, we do. But we also want to prevent the government from engaging in ideological witch hunts or violating civil liberties, simply on the basis of what people believe. (Read the rest here)
From The Ludwig von Mises Institute No
Silver in the Silver Lining Many economists since Mises have noted that every time the Fed manipulates interest rates it creates bubbles of malinvestment. In addition to reallocating scarce resources in inefficient ventures, one of the problems with artificially lowering interest rates is that, ultimately, someone has to pay for these subsidies.[1] As with every freebie provided by the government, some faceless individuals will ultimately share this unjust burden. And over the course of the Fed's more-than-90-year existence, individuals with dollar-denominated assets have borne the brunt of this devaluation as the dollar is worth about 5% of its original 1913 value.[2] (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. External Articles Allison Brown wrote a thoughtful piece discussing ideas why there appears to be few liberty-minded women. Claire Wolfe noticed Allisons commentary, and added that of the few libertarian women she knows, most tend to be hardcore and radical about their liberty and she wondered why. Dakota James also once addressed the question of libertarian women. Perhaps there is an answer for these women, although I cite no psychological or sociological experts and I make no appeal to anything other than personal observation.
