Our right to defend ourselves:
Montana joins states in pro-gun Supreme Court brief
KXMB News
“Montana has joined 30 other states in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a lower court ruling, affirming the individual’s right to bear arms. Attorney General Mike McGrath says the states signed a ‘friend-of-the-court’ brief, that supports a federal appeals court ruling that the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns violates the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.” (02/12/08)

Much as I hate to say it, this makes more of an impact than the SAF and JPFO briefs (see next story). What this makes me wonder, though, is if this Supreme Court decision could be another Dred Scott decision, and the forerunner of another War between the States? We are long overdue.

Mama's Note: Dang! That's a great idea! Let's see... Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and maybe even British Columbia and Alberta. Plenty of room for Washington and Oregon, if the folks there kick out their socialist legisgators. This could be the start of something mighty good. [This item is from page 2] (Read page 1 here)

Trusting God - No Greater Love
By Susan Callaway, Editor

The "gun free zones" continue to give criminals every opportunity to murder with impunity. It just doesn't seem possible that so many people actually can't accept the fact that in each case, even ONE armed citizen could have prevented the tragedy, or at least reduced the number of victims. And, sometimes they have, in spite of the "law."

The only way that clear fact can be denied is by willful blindness, or even worse, an indifference to the lives and happiness of others. There is simply no excuse possible for those who deliberately peddle fear and misinformation about armed self defense. (Read the rest here)

Real ID: Security From What, May I Ask?
By Doug Newman

Terrorists pose zero threat to our freedom. Terrorism is not a philosophy of government, but a means of venting political grievances. Terrorists control no governments nor command any armies. The 19 9/11 hijackers are -- how shall I describe this? -- DEAD! (1) You can't take over a country and force its people to speak Arabic and to pray toward Mecca five times a day WHEN YOU ARE DEAD!

However, our government has been hard at work, with our blessing, turning the land of the free into a full-blown police state. While our troops fight and die "for our freedom" in Iraq and Afghanistan, we gladly give up our freedom here at home. Millions of us praise grossly intrusive airport security, warrantless searches and wiretaps, no-knock raids, tasering, arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, guilt without trial, torture and martial law as necessary for our "protection". Protection from what? (Read the rest here)

The war against law-abiding citizens
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

That zany German powercrat and standup comic, Otto Von Bismarck, is credited with the one-line zinger, "Those who like eating ze sausages and obeying ze laws shouldt neffer watch how either iss maken."

But laws, as libertarians have oft observed, are frequently worse than the worst that bratwurst can wrought. While improperly prepared hot links might sicken and kill those relative few who eat them, even the most well crafted and highly hailed law may have the effect of distressing and destroying millions of people for years, or even centuries.

Most Americans seem to believe that obeying their nation's laws is all that it takes to be a good person. Identifying oneself as a "law-abiding citizen" is a common homily trotted out to prove one's superior morality and worthiness. (Read the rest here)

Bush Lights Fuse On Another Constitutional Principle
Ex Post Facto Laws

By Ted Lang © 2008

Woodrow Wilson held a Ph. D. but wasn't bright enough to restrain his bad judgment in supporting the Federal Reserve System and its guarantee of citizen reimbursement via the unconstitutional income tax. And as he failed in this, in spite of all his marvelous and outstanding education, and couldn't see through the international bankers' plan to enslave American government and its people, he failed to see also the benefits provided by a strict adherence to the United States Constitution and the combined genius of the Founding Fathers. I Must Keep Running
By Ron Ewart © 2008

I keep running, but the dogs are gaining. I've been running for three days now and I'm exhausted. I hear the hounds behind me but I must find the strength to stay ahead, always ahead. If they catch me, I might as well be dead.

It all started on Sunday when I was working one of my fields with a tractor, preparing the field for the next round of hay for the season. The exhaust pipe of the tractor was belching black smoke, as it usually did. The old diesel engine kept on chugging in a low staccato, as it always did, old reliable as it was. (Read the rest here)

X-Rated Iraq -- A Tortured Story
By Captain Eric H. May - Military Correspondent

An anonymous man wearing a US Special Forces T-shirt is a war criminal, if his three-minute YouTube interview is to be believed. In it, he claims to have taken part in routine torture of Iraqis -- Hajji's in soldier slang -- in the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, and to have been part of a scheme with other guards to prostitute a 15-year-old Iraqi girl who later hung herself.

YouTube continues to be the worst nightmare of a White House that has practiced infowar -- the militarization of information -- since 9/11. I heartily encourage each of my readers to view the clip, then make his or her own decision as to whether or not to believe that Soldier X is in earnest, as my military contacts and I believe, or is part of a well-acted hoax, as Bush apologists are arguing:

GOP, R.I.P?
by Sheldon Richman

I don’t usually come to the defense of conservatives, but I am perplexed that they are being attacked because they don’t support John McCain’s presidential bid. Self-anointed Voices of Responsibility are chiding conservative spokesmen and spokeswomen for criticizing McCain on several counts and for going as far as promising to vote for Hillary Clinton if she’s the alternative to the Arizona senator.

Would these conservatives really promote a Democratic victory in November in order to initiate a reform of the Republican Party, the allegedly more mature McCain supporters want to know.

Well, why not? Shouldn’t principle count for something? Are there no conceivable circumstances under which a political party ought to be defeated to be saved? Of course there are. (Read the rest here)

Arms Race in Space?
By Mike Moore

The University of Maryland has issued the results of a new national poll indicating that the American people overwhelmingly oppose putting weapons in space, so long as no other country deploys such weapons.

Where did that come from?

Actually, the United States has been talking about space weapons for decades. Consider this bureaucratese from the U.S. Air Force Space Command’s Strategic Master Plan FY06 and Beyond: “Non-nuclear prompt global strike from and through space can transform the war fighter’s role in the future. The Frightful Face of Stimulus
By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

Economist Robert Higgs compares a "stimulus package" to getting water out of the deep end of the swimming pool and dumping in the shallow end — all with the expectation that the water level will rise. As he emphasizes, economists should never tire of asking where the money for stimulus is going to come from. Mankind has yet to invent a machine to create it out of nothing: it's either taxing, inflating, or going into debt that has to be paid later (and crowds out capital creation now). There is no other way. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Who is attacking the Second Amendment in the D.C. gun case,
and what can you do about it?

By Ken Hanson, Esq.

At some point in your day, you, like me, probably wonder “Have I done all I can do to be a pain in the hind end of those who oppose my gun rights?” The answer, of course, is “no.” Fortunately, it is easy to take some immediate and long term actions to irritate those opposed to your rights. Most steps are as simple as “vendor selection” decisions you make daily.

An interesting array of folks have spent considerable time and money arguing that the Second Amendment does not mean what it plainly says, and chances are you indirectly support these groups trying to strip you of your rights. Your support needs to stop – immediately. Here are simple steps you can take to make sure that these groups learn that nonsense has a price.

First, review the groups that oppose your rights. You can do this by visiting http://dcguncase.com/blog/case-filings/ and reviewing the column entitled “Amici for Petitioner.” You might need to click on the brief and review each cover page to see exactly which groups signed on to a brief. Each group appearing in this column is a sworn enemy of your gun rights, having spent tens of thousands of dollars to defend the absurd “collective rights” view.
