11, 2008 Yuck! Politics is hideous, and this week there is way too much of it. Elections in the US, civil war in Chad, too much nanny-state everywhere are all in the news this week. It is a good time to ask ourselves, are we going to fight to live in liberty or submit to more and more slavery. The choice is ours. Think about that as we go through the news. Afghan
front: Unstable means Taleban-controlled, of course, and the wholesale/distribution revenue supports their anti-Western operations. This is, of course, a piece of poetic justice, since it is the Wests unflagging desire for recreational pharma that provides the market. Mama's Note: It is also the direct result of government (all kinds) interference in the market. When life itself is filled with terror, war and uncertainty, they have a very natural tendency to plant only those things which will bring the greatest profit with the least investment. Opium has been a secure cash crop for many thousands of years, with willing customers all over the world. (Read the rest here)
A
Paean to Political Patriotism
"Yes, Honey. They act that way because they are children. Even after they've grown up they're still children. It's just like your Daddy and me. You see, Daddy is the Boss of this family. When Daddy abuses me and hits me and gives me black eyes and a bloody nose I always come crawling back to him because he is the Boss and I am his adult child. In some families it's the Mommy who is the Boss and the Daddy who gets abused and cheated on and henpecked, and he's the one who comes crawling back. But it's all the same. That's how most people are, Sweetie. No matter how many times their Political Mommies and Daddies abuse them, they will keep crawling back for more. They will keep paying taxes and voting and believing pretty-sounding lies and going to jail even when they didn't hurt anyone. All because someone told them that they're good little Citizens and should always love someone else more than they love themselves, like a televangelist or a flag or a social welfare program or anything else that makes them feel warm and cozy while they're living under some Politician's thumb." (Read the rest here) Individual
and State Diversity has given way to only two distinct opposites: respect for the individual versus respect for the state. Our nation was created to protect the sanctity of the individual; for freedom, namely the individual's inherent right to life liberty and property, can only be enjoyed by the individual. In spite of family, friends, religious and political factions and groups, we come into this life as an individual and we will leave it as an individual. Fans and advocates of big cradle-to-grave government are in complete denial when they lust after big government to bring out the best in the individual. Government uses force, to restrain and tax, and will always grow itself. And as it eternally continues to do so, it snuffs out human individuality. (Read the rest here) The
Brainwashed as Cannon Fodder Were the Founding Fathers alive today, they would be appalled. Were the average citizens of the late 1700's alive, they too would be appalled. The federal government is about 50 times bigger than they ever imagined it should be. They never imagined an enormous military, crashing around the world, or a Federal Reserve Bank (which is not federal, has no reserves, and is not a bank), or a President who could start decades-long wars without a declaration of war. Ask yourself this: what good has the federal government ever done? Very little, perhaps nothing. When you compare the bad it has done to the good (however you define "good") it's not even close. Especially when you take into account the number of people killed by the feds. (Read the rest here)
Violence
is the Final Outcome of Government Tyranny Local, state and federal government politicians mistakenly believe, at their own peril, that if they pass law after law against the citizens of America, especially if those laws fall outside of the expected freedoms most Americans believe are their inalienable rights, they are somehow immune from some of those Americans striking back with violence. First it will be isolated incidents like the man near Denver who, mad at local authorities over zoning issues, outfitted his large bulldozer with steel plates and small holes to see through, brought it to the planning department's office and leveled the building before the police finally killed him. Then there is the case of a man somewhere in Arizona that couldn't trim his own hedges himself and had to have it done by the contracted landscaper of the gated community he lived in, at his cost of course. He sued the community and lost. His next action was violence. He took a shot gun to the community meeting and killed two of the commissioners. He will be in jail for the rest of his life. The Future of Freedom Foundation Why
Not Abolish the Fed? Most Americans probably still believe that the Great Depression was caused by the failure of the free-enterprise system. It is a false belief. The truth is that the worst economic disaster in American history was caused by the Federal Reserve. Give current Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke credit for publicly acknowledging that fact in a speech delivered in 2002 commemorating Friedmans 90th birthday. Throughout the ages, the favorite political trick for public officials has been to dole out free benefits to the citizenry and engage in expensive foreign military adventures without raising taxes. To accomplish this feat, they have simply resorted to the printing press to get the money to pay for the free benefits and the military adventures. As more money was printed, its value would drop, which would be reflected in rising prices for the things that money buys. As prices rose, people would blame speculators, capitalists, price-gougers, and profiteers, never suspecting that their public officials were behind the scam. (Read the rest here)
ChileBirth
Pangs of Citizenship One of the most significant developments that took place in Chile in the last decade and a half was the center-left coalitions buying into the economic reforms it inherited from Augusto Pinochets dictatorship. That political consensus translated into stability and predictability, generating a steady flow of investment and an increase in economic production. But now that people are weary of the governing coalition, Chile faces a challenge similar to what Spain faced some years ago: the need for the rightthe child of the military dictatorshipto demonstrate that it is ready to govern under the rule of law. The effect will be not only to bid farewell to the Pinochet syndrome once and for all, but, more importantly in todays modern and democratic Chile, to engage in a new wave of reforms that begins to narrow the gap between an economic environment that is first class and a service environment that for many Chileans is third rate. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute
The Laissez-Faire Radical: A
Quest for the Historical Mises That Ludwig von Mises was the outstanding champion of laissez-faire and the free-market economy in this century is well known and needs no documentation. But in the course of refining and codifying his political views, Mises's followers have unwittingly distorted them and made them seem at one with the modern conservative movement in the United States. Mises is made to appear a sort of National Review intellectual concentrating on the free-market aspects of conservatism. While the image of Mises as an essential conservative is scarcely made up of the whole cloth, it totally overlooks rich strains of Misesian thought that can be described only as "laissez-faire radical." Unfortunately, these strands of Misesian thought have been all but lost. Perhaps this essay will help to right the balance. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. External Articles There is a decent chance that what you know about libertarianism, or classical liberalism, just aint so. Many opponents of libertarianism, on both the Right and the Left, have very distorted views of the concept. I dont actually blame them for it. Many libertarians are similarly confused. The basic principle of libertarianism is that each individual has the right to live according to their own values, in their own way, provided they respect the equal liberty of others to do similarly. There isnt much confusion about that. It is the application of that principle that gets messy -- but that is how life usually is. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
