Our right to defend ourselves:
NE: Proposal would ban gun seizures after catastrophes
Insurance Journal
“Should disaster strike and chaos ensue, Nebraskans could be forced to give up their guns, under current law. That’s what happened in New Orleans, when police seized guns after Hurricane Katrina walloped the city in 2005. But a state lawmaker wants to change the rules so that cities and other political subdivisions in Nebraska couldn’t do the same. Under a bill LB 1076 from Sen. Kent Rogert of Tekamah, neither the state nor political subdivisions could enact special restrictions on guns during emergency or disasters. The law would apply to gun possession, storage and use, among other things. The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit against New Orleans city officials over the city’s seizure of firearms after the hurricane.” (01/30/08)

It would be nice to think that this would pass in Nebraska, which is the most hoploclastic state in the Great Plains by far.

Mama's Note: And we all know how well the states obey the "law" if it doesn't suit them. As far as I know, the people of New Orleans STILL have not had their guns returned to them, in spite of lawsuits and court orders. The only way to prevent gun confiscation is not to let anyone take them in the first place. (Read the rest here)

The state of the State of Columbia
by Garry Reed
The Loose Cannon Libertarian

From time to time a pint-sized parcel of property dubbed District of Columbia is heard to agitate for statehood. Considering that its capital, Washington, which is of course also the capital of a whole nation/empire/allegedly Free World, would have the same city limits as the state would have state lines, we’re talking more city-state than state.

Still, it seems only inevitable that this odd-shaped shard of landscape will eventually snatch the status of tiniest state from the grip of Rhode Island, so perhaps a hank of history would be helpful here. (Read the rest here)

NY Times Arrogance - Downing Street No. 2
By Ted Lang © 2008

There may have been some secretive, vital, diplomatic or international security reasons, or even possibly some other critical military considerations that shaped their editorial reasoning, but somehow, I doubt that any such considerations came into play regarding The New York Times' decision to censor and spike the story first broken by the Sunday London Times on May 1, 2005. Of course, the red two-inch bold headline lettering that should have emblazoned the front pages of The New York Times on May 2, 2005, along with its follow-on account, could easily have deferred to the London Times and acknowledged its scoop, even if the story could, back then, have been considered a real stretch. But these certainly cannot be the reasons that the NY Times failed to further amplify that monumental piece of true journalism, ignoring it instead and relegating it to less than a mere and meaningless supermarket checkout counter tabloid exposé. American Heart Association Plays a Cruel Trick on Women
By Carey Roberts

Most people have never heard of Lois Verbrugge, a researcher at the University of Michigan. A few years ago Dr. Verbrugge did a study on elderly women. She found that compared to their married counterparts, single elderly women are four times more likely to end up in a nursing home. Which means after your husband dies of heart disease, you are four times more likely to be removed from your home and taken to an institutional setting to spend your last days in medicated bliss. That's what happened to several ladies I've known. And what about men who keel over from heart disease in their 40s and 50s? What happens to their wives and children? (Read the rest here)

Political Stimulus
by Sheldon Richman

Not understanding basic economics is dangerous because you're vulnerable to political con games foisted by unscrupulous politicians.

Economics properly conceived is just common sense about human activity. An examination of the proposed economic stimulus will make this clear.

Nearly all politicians claim that the economy needs a stimulus that only they can provide. That is odd right off the bat. Politicians produce nothing; they spend other people's money and, in the process, interfere with people's productive activities. Why would anybody think they could stimulate an economy? Gas about Public Transit
By John Semmens

Even before oil prices reached their current record levels, many were suggesting that the government push consumer costs higher by raising gasoline taxes. The assumption is that higher prices would result in use of less gasoline: the basic law of supply and demand.

However, the American people—known for their fierce independence as well as their common-sense frugality—don’t always act the way academic theorists and computer models (even free-market computer models) say they should act.

Indeed, the dramatic rise in gasoline prices over the last several years seems to have had almost no impact at all on the driving habits of most Americans. (Read the rest here)

Dealing with Recession
By Clifford F. Thies

But, you can never really discard the possibility that we (meaning, the government) will do one or more really bone-headed things. Some really bone-headed things that come immediately to mind are: cracking down on mortgage bankers, raising taxes on the upper middle class, driving interest rates down as low as possible, flooding the markets with funny money, attacking the automobile, and deporting millions of people. Such things as these will further reduce the demand for upscale, middle family homes, depressing their values, and forestalling any recovery in the construction industry. Compared to those inane responses, sending out tax rebate checks sounds benign. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Mukasey's radical worldview is now the norm
By Glenn Greenwald

I long ago stopped blaming the Bush administration -- at least exclusively -- for what has happened to our political system. They were responsible in the first instance, but the rest of the country's institutions -- its media, its Congress, the "opposition" party, even the courts -- all allowed it to happen, choosing to do nothing -- or to endorse it -- once it all began to be disclosed. It wouldn't have surprised the Founders that we would have corrupt and lawbreaking political leaders, including in the White House. The idea was that there would be numerous checks on that corruption. But when those other institutions fail, or are complicit, the fault is collective.
