Exclusive to The Price of Liberty
Libertarian Commentary on The News, 23 - 29 December, 2007
By Nathan A. Barton © 2007

With Christmas Day on a Tuesday this year, the news week is very short indeed. But there are events going on, and these events DO have an impact on liberty.
Thinking about New Year’s, here are some resolutions I urge us all to consider:
1. I will work to reestablish liberty, first for my family, second for my brethren (church and fellow knights of non-agression), third for my communities (Black Hills, Four Corners), then for my states and nation, and the world.
2. I will see that all that I say and do to make sure that my support for liberty and work does not take away liberty from anyone: I will not be a hypocrite.
3. I will defend the right of other people to say what they will, even though I think that what they say is wrong, evil, stupid, or just plain silly.
4. I will defend the right of other people to do what they will PROVIDED that they do no harm to others by their actions, even though I believe that their actions are wrong, evil, stupid, or just plain silly or foolish.
5. I won’t attack people for who they are, but for what they do.

This week, the top news is from South Asia, so I start with that, then go on to the others: (Read the rest here)

The Establishment
By Ted Lang © 2007

Already and early on in the soon to occur 2008 presidential elections, “The Establishment” has reared its ugly head and has begun to mobilize its vast resources against Congressman Ron Paul, the only honest, truthful and pro-American candidate of the lot. What is it, and who is it, that makes up The Establishment?

Here is a likely summation: the international banking House of Rothschild and Rockefeller are the drivers of the “New World Order.” It has always been the House of Rothschild that has, since its inception, played opposites against one another in order to enjoy huge and astronomical profits that proportionately towered over their donated “investments” backed by their alleged gold reserves used to fund government-desired wars. Their extremely profitable modus operandi has always been the funding of both sides of governments at war with each other. The Rothschild Bank of England obviously funded the British, and the Rothschild Bank of France funded Napoleon. (Read the rest here)

Courage in the Crosshairs: Ron Paul and the Republic
By Captain Eric H. May - Military Correspondent

The devilish details of Bhutto's death have all Pakistan raising hell with a wave of riots that could turn in to a revolution before all is said and done.  Her frenzied supporters demand answers to questions that their government does not have the credibility to answer satisfactorily.  Where was her security at the fatal moment?  Who fired the shots that rang out across the crowd, the pistol waving gunman in grainy photos from the scene or the sniper reported by Bhutto supporters?  After being shot and then suicide bombed, why does the official autopsy report released a day later claim that neither bullets nor bombs had anything to do with her death?

Some Middle East experts estimate that two thirds of Pakistanis believe that Musharraf and the corrupt Establishment upholding him were either guilty of committing the Bhutto murder, allowing it to happen or covering up details after it happened. (Read the rest here)

Winners of the Coveted 2007 Award for Political Incorrectness
By Carey Roberts

The Duke lacrosse case represents an enduring failure of the American mainstream media. Not only did the New York Times, CNN, USA Today, and other outlets neglect their duty to provide balanced and factual coverage of the case. Worse, they became the public relations arm of a sleazy prosecutor named Michael Nifong.

As so often happens in rape cases, the media featured lurid accusations made by an anonymous victim, all the while omitting the word "alleged" and failing to offer the defendant the opportunity to present his side of the event. (Read the rest here)

Why Is Democracy Such A Bad Thing?
By Doug Newman

In the Mel Gibson movie "The Patriot" there is a great line about there being no difference between one tyrant 3000 miles away and 3000 tyrants one mile away. The Founders hated the concept of democracy and knew from history that democracy always degenerated into despotism. Neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution even mentions the word "democracy".

Democracy has been defined as the right of 51 percent to pee in the cornflakes of the other 49 percent. You have NO RIGHTS in a democracy as they may be overridden by the whims of the majority. If the majority votes that half your income be confiscated before you can so much as buy groceries, oh well, this is a democracy! If the majority votes that you cannot alleviate your back pain in a socially unacceptable manner, oh well, this is a democracy! If the majority votes that Jews be rounded up and sent to forced labor camps on the North Slope of Alaska, oh well, this is a democracy! (Read the rest here)

Are Conservatives (Undocumented) Aliens?
by Jacob G. Hornberger

Reality check: Americans are living under the biggest, most powerful government in history. It is the biggest-spending government in history. Its currency is crashing because of its out-of-control spending. Its military power extends over the entire globe. It is an empire that polices the world, sometimes with brutal and deadly force. It kidnaps, tortures, sexually abuses, incarcerates, and murders people with impunity and without even the semblance of due process or trial by jury. It engages in coups, assassinations, invasions, and occupations of countries that have recalcitrant regimes. Its jails are overrun with people who have committed no act of violence against others. It ignores constitutional restraints on its powers. Its ever-increasing welfare-state programs keep the citizenry drugged, calm, and dependent on the state. (Read the rest here)

The Corporate Form, Limited Liability, and the State
By Brad Edmonds

How can I be confident corporate limited liability and aggregation of small investments into big piles of money would be possible without the state? Because contracts are possible without the state — for an interesting sort of confirmation, just check the Constitution of the United States, which admits indirectly that private contracts should be binding and untouched as private law; and that such contracts predate the Constitution (Art. I, § 10).

How would these contracts work to insulate passive investors from lawsuits against corporations? The contractual mechanisms necessary are already well known in business drafting. There are indemnification clauses, whereby one party agrees to hold the other harmless and reimburse the other for expenses incurred in certain legal actions. 2007: The Jeer in Review
by Garry Reed

January – (MSNBC) while attending the American Historical Association's annual convention in Atlanta, British Professor Felipe Fernandez-Armesto was thrown to the ground by eight cops and jailed for jaywalking. So where was the city's 45-member SWAT team, busy smashing in a classroom door where a six-year-old boy was committing felonious handholding with a six-year-old girl?

February – (Seattle Times) NY State Senatecrat Carl Kruger wants to fine you $100 if you walk or bike across a street while using an iPod, cell phone, Blackberry, video game or anything else that looks like an electronic device. Some libertarians suspect Kruger might be descended from the crat who wrote the law requiring a man with a lantern to walk in front of anyone driving a horseless carriage after dark. Sleeping With The Enemy
From Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership

The National Rifle Association has done it.

Again.

Having advertised itself for more than a century as the nation's foremost defender of the Second Amendment, the NRA has once again given aid and comfort to politicians -- all of the "usual suspects": Carolyn McCarthy, Charles Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Harry Reid, and that perennial Judas goat John Dingell -- as well as to pressure groups like the Brady Campaign, who are determined to destroy that right, by assisting passage of a law with the potential to strip hundreds of thousands of military veterans of their basic right to own and carry weapons.
