Libertarian Commentary on The News, 02 - 08 December, 2007

Hoping everyone had a GREAT Bill of Rights Day – but don’t forget to enforce it all the year around; the Bill of Rights is too important to just celebrate one day a year.

Now, on to the news, starting with two items of particular interest to me:

Our right to defend ourselves:
Colorado killings linked to same [dead] gunman
USA Today
COLORADO SPRINGS — Police searched a home in suburban Englewood early Monday, seeking any link between two deadly shooting sprees at Christian religious centers that left both communities stunned on a day of worship. Four people and a gunman died in the attacks Sunday at a megachurch here in Colorado Springs and at the Youth With a Mission missionary center in the town of Arvada. "She [the security volunteer] probably saved over 100 lives," [New Life Church leader] Boyd said. He described her as a highly trained volunteer member of the church with a law enforcement background whose role was to provide security. He said she was not wearing a uniform and is licensed to carry a gun. Boyd said the shooting was random and that the gunman had no connection to the church. He said the church has had a security plan in place for many years which includes the evacuation plan it used on Sunday.

Let’s start with the good news: one woman with a gun, a church member, a volunteer with training, saved dozens of lives. For more, see my separate article, and my blog. It could have been much worse: the news reporting doesn’t really talk about that, or a lot of other things. (Read the rest here)

Impeachment Will Trump Executive Privilege
By Ted Lang © 2007

The arrogance and unrelenting contempt that the Cheney-Bush administration has for the American people and the people’s Congress continuously verified and on public display, has reached exceedingly dangerous levels. The administration’s contempt for Congress and its controlling Democrats is unprecedented in the history of this now rapidly failing experiment in republic-based individual freedom. It is contempt for the very foundation of our societal achievements, a pilgrims’ progress based upon creativeness and industry collectively enjoyed by a nation that formerly depended upon rugged individualism and hard work. It is a contempt that places parasitic bureaucracy and authoritarian government over the rights of individuals that built this nation and made it great. It is a contempt that grows daily and feeds upon itself, capitalizing upon the treason and cowardice of the Democratic Party. (Read the rest here)

The Second Amendment Question before the Supreme Court
Constitutionally Flawed and Dangerous

By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

Last month, the United States Supreme Court announced it would review a federal appellate court decision that overturned the handgun ban in the District of Columbia on Second Amendment grounds. In a one-sentence order, the Court agreed to decide the following question:

"Whether the following provisions, D.C. Code §§ 7-2502.02(a)(4), 22-4504(a), and 7-2507.02, violate the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms for private use in their homes?"

Unfortunately, this question is constitutionally flawed because 3 words have been incorrectly joined together. Those words are: "Second Amendment rights." By incorporating the words "Second Amendment rights" into the question, the Supreme Court has completely altered the intent and scope of the Second Amendment. Thus, the Court will decide the case on a fictitious amendment created by the federal judiciary. (Read the rest here)

Hillary Rodham, The Making of a Social Radical
By Carey Roberts

Most know that Hillary Rodham Clinton's politics veer to the outer fringes of the radical left. But how many understand the reasons for her conversion from Goldwater conservative to cultural Marxist, and how this would play out during her controversial bid for the U.S. presidency?

Comfortably ensconced in suburban Park Ridge, Ill., Hillary grew up under the tutelage of Hugh Rodham, a rock-ribbed conservative who was once described as "rougher than a corncob." He taught her to throw a baseball and expected her to excel at school. Hillary's brother Tony would later reveal, "She was Daddy's girl, no doubt about it." (Read the rest here)

Supremes - Where Did Our House Go?
By Ted Lang © 2005

Okay, I’ll admit it! I’m madder than hell at the Supreme Communists of the United States, sometimes inappropriately referred to as a “court,” as in “court jesters.” And they have also adjudicated that I have to take it more and more. As they abolish Christianity in the name of diversity and pro-Semitism, and take away our Tens [Ten Commandments, Ten Amendments, a.k.a. the Bill of Rights] they, in one stupid fell swoop, have not only abolished all private property, but the United States of America itself! We no longer exist! (Read the rest here)

Fox vs. Chavez

By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

SAN CRISTOBAL RANCH, Mexico—Vicente Fox is defying that old Mexican tradition by which presidents become nonentities once they leave office. As Fox’s recent tour of the United States to promote his autobiography indicates, this former Mexican president is speaking out and building a front to stop Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez from spreading his revolution.

Although Fox presided over an admirable transition from the one-party era of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to multiparty democracy, he was unwilling to push through a series of unpopular but necessary reforms during his single term as president. Now the fire in his belly is back. (Read the rest here)

Iran’s Phantom Nukes

By Sheldon Richman

We can all sleep easier today. Any plans President George W. Bush may have had to attack Iran were dealt a major blow by the news that U.S. intelligence now believes Iran stopped trying to develop nuclear weapons in 2003. That, by the way, was two years before Mahmoud “The New Hitler” Ahmadinejad became president of Iran (a post that does not include in its job description commander of the armed forces).

While few things are impossible, it will now be very difficult for Bush to send the bombers into Iran and wreak the death and destruction that would necessarily follow. (Read the rest here)

Are Carbon Emissions the Cause of Global Warming?
By David Evans

First crucial point, 2003: We've all seen Al Gore's movie. It was the early, low resolution ice core data first gathered in 1985 that convinced the world that CO2 was the culprit: CO2 levels and temperature rose and fell in lockstep over the last half a million years, to the resolution of the old ice core data (results from 1985–2000, data points over a thousand years apart). It was assumed (bad assumption #1) that CO2 levels controlled the world's temperature.

After further research, new high-resolution ice core results (data points only a few hundred years apart) in 2000–2003 allowed us to distinguish which came first, the temperature rises or the CO2 rises. We found that temperature changes preceded CO2 changes by an average of 800 years. So temperature caused the CO2 levels, and not the other way around as previously assumed. The world should have started backpedaling away from blaming carbon emissions in 2003. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Vaccine Politics
by Rick Fisk

The first vaccine mandated by governments was the small pox vaccine. Today, you’ll hear any number of medical professionals refer to the vaccine as proof of Western military medicine’s superiority over any other discipline. The World Health Organization proclaims proudly to anyone who will listen that the vaccine has eradicated smallpox (yet for a disease "indistinguishable from smallpox," apply the same vaccine used to protect against smallpox).

So prevalent is the favorable view of vaccines, that people who question this "truism" are ridiculed. But, when the vaccine had been about 100 years old (it is now over 200 years old), it had its detractors. One of them was a scientist, Alfred Russel Wallace. The Honor of Being Human: Why Do You Support?
by Arthur Silber

In this setting, what we often call "obedience" is, in fact, something very different. The question is rendered still more complicated because of the particular state of affairs that exists at present in the United States. In my own thinking, I have begun to identify this state of affairs in this manner: "The Imminent, but Not-Yet, Not-Quite Dictatorship." I will explore the ramifications of this idea in the near future. For now, I note only that all the mechanisms of a full dictatorship are now in place: the passage of the Military Commissions Act establishes that fact beyond all question. In terms of the powers claimed by the executive branch, this has been true for several years: see, "It Can't Happen Here." But the Military Commissions Act explicitly made dictatorial powers the law of the land. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)

Massive Crime Wave Sweeps the Country
by Garry Reed

It's a nice sunny day so you decide to go anti-war protesting with your friends.

You will be arrested.

If you obey all the rules, demonstrate peacefully, don't trespass or block building entrances, or obstruct public sidewalks or impede auto traffic, or destroy property and don't run with scissors, you will still be arrested.

You may be arrested for kneeling or shrugging or leafleting or wearing a plain T-shirt or holding a bucket of paste.

It has become illegal in the USSA to unknowingly break unknown, never-before-heard-of laws while protesting war. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
