10, 2007 One hundred news stories this week, and be sure to celebrate Bill of Rights Day on 15 DEC this week. It aint perfect, but its the best weve got right now, and 99% better than what most of the world has, as many of these stories imply. How
to celebrate? Here are a few quirky ideas: On to the news: (Read the rest here)
America
in Crisis Increasing Police Violence Police brutality as a regular occurrence in America was once limited to specific areas in big cities. It was motivated by an us-versus-them racist police mentality that was formerly isolated to ghettos and included also organized crime strongholds in such big cities as Chicago and New York during the government-imposed Prohibition back in the 1920s and 30s. The them in the combative police mindset during this time was comprised of a certain race or a particular criminal class, and focused mainly on organized mobsters personified by bootleggers and gamblers generally identified as elements of the Italian Mafia. And in the mid-1800s, Irish gangs in New York City were commonplace. (Read the rest here)

2007 NIE: Disloyalty to Royalty "Baghdad has chemical and biological weapons ... if left unchecked, it probably will have a nuclear weapon during this decade." -- 2002 NIE After 9/11, US intelligence services bent over backwards -- and forwards -- at the whim of the White House. The result was the bastardized analysis of the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which invented an Iraqi WMD program to justify the neocon global war program. The Senate took the newborn causus belli to heart and gave George Bush permission to wage imperial war for the overt reasons of American security and Iraqi freedom -- and the covert reasons of oil and Israel. Resist,
Resist, Resist!! Every day, government tightens the screws on the American people by passing and then enforcing new law, after new law. The U. S. Congress never saw a new law to restrict the people they didn't like (more on that later). But all across America, people are finally waking up and taking action to thwart the lawmakers and the enforcers, by resisting through every lawful means. Take for example, the story of Andrea Elliot of New York state, who "esplained" it to a couple of nosy agriculture enforcer/inspectors. (Read the rest here)

The Archives In the introduction of this book, we learn that a hologram is something ephemeral that only appears to be solid. It is Kenneth W. Royce's contention that the US Constitution itself, revered by many, is just that: a mere hologram of liberty. Whether that idea surprises you or disgusts you is immaterial to the facts that are then set out, one by one and chapter after chapter, to prove the point. I picked up this book with some skepticism and a little trepidation. I've long been something of a fan of the Constitution and, though I'm no expert, I certainly have more knowledge about it than the average American does. But the research behind Hologram of Liberty was so extensive and with such attention to detail that I learned new things in every chapter. I also, largely against my will, found myself convinced that appearances are, indeed, deceiving. (Read the rest here)

Independent Institute In medicine, doctors weigh the success rate of a procedure before they undertake an operation. Unfortunately, foreign policy isnt made in the same scientific spirit. Propelled by the excitement of the moment and lots of wishful thinking, policymakers order military deployments without consulting past experience. A case in point is President Bushs invasion of Iraq. He hoped that our military occupation would turn that country into a democracy, but there is no sign he considered the success rate for this kind of action. Over the past century, the United States has sent military forces to many troubled areas in an effort to establish democracy. Great Britain has done the same, several dozen times. Before invading Iraq, the president should have studied how these efforts have turned out, to know his chances of success. (Read the rest here)

Future of Freedom Foundation The
Myth of a Risk-free Life What I seriously suspect is that all this supposed worry about risks to everyone, including birds, is nothing more than posturing and catering to the fears many people have at certain times in their lives, vis-à-vis lifes hazards. By pretending that the risks of ordinary life in their jurisdictions can be erased with the stroke of a pen, provided enough politicians want that, these people are engaging in gross deception. Of course, they couldnt do it without the cooperation of their constituents who, sadly, have come to expect the impossible dream thats being promised to them. Indeed, a great many citizens appear to believe they are entitled to such a life, at the expense of other citizens. This political round robin of economic cannibalism is now routine; so it is no great surprise that millions have bought into it even when the prospects of satisfaction are completely mythical. From The Ludwig von Mises Institute Antilibertarians, and antiradicals generally, characteristically make the point that such abolitionism is "unrealistic"; by making such a charge they hopelessly confuse the desired goal with a strategic estimate of the probable path toward that goal. It is essential to make a clear-cut distinction between the ultimate goal itself, and the strategic estimate of how to reach that goal; in short, the goal must be formulated before questions of strategy or "realism" enter the scene. The fact that such a magic button does not and is not likely to exist has no relevance to the desirability of abolitionism itself. We might agree, for example, on the goal of liberty and the desirability of abolitionism in liberty's behalf. But this does not mean that we believe that abolition will in fact be attainable in the near or far future. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. External Articles Incidents like the one in Omaha and those that preceded it are simply too damned convenient -- to the victim disarmament crowd -- for them to be accepted any more as merely the random work of individual psychotics. There it is. I said it, and I'm glad. More and more it appears to even the most neutral observer that, just when Congress, the state legislature, or even a city council is debating a new law that infringes the right of the people to keep and bear arms -- in this case it's the U.S. Supreme Court taking up the question -- some lunatic comes along, using whatever gun the liberals currently want most to put political pressure on, and kills a bunch of people. It almost never fails. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.) Media
Coverage of Mall Shooting Fails to Reveal Mall's Gun-Free-Zone Status
The horrible tragedy at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. received a lot of attention Wednesday and Thursday. It should have. Eight people were killed, and five were wounded. A Google news search using the phrase "Omaha Mall Shooting" finds an incredible 2,794 news stories worldwide for the last day. From India and Taiwan to Britain and Austria, there are probably few people in the world who havent heard about this tragedy. But despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.
