Paul shatters fundraising record with $4.2 million day

“Ron Paul will certainly now always remember the 5th of November as upon the day’s conclusion his campaign raised more than $4.2 million dollars from more than 37,000 different contributors. That is more than Mitt Romney raised in one day in January, which was previously the top day in fundraising for a Republican candidate. Maybe the most amazing part about the amount of money raised is that it was all raised online. Paul’s website reports that his campaign only needs $12 million by December 31st in order to win the primaries in New Hampshire, Iowa, Michigan, South Carolina, and Nevada. As of midnight November 6th they were at $7.1 million and the numbers were rising quickly by the hundreds of thousands.” (11/06/07)

For many people, this was THE big Election 2007 news of the week and probably the month. It almost has moved Paul into double digits in the GOP primary to boot, and now everyone is hoping for a strong showing in Iowa. But as the next story hints, not many media or people were paying any attention. (Read the rest here)

The Second Amendment is an Individual Right

In a recent article entitled: Tell me why the States needed the so-called 'Collective Right' Second Amendment?, I gave some examples of how to prove the right enumerated in the Second Amendment is an individual right without referencing the Amendment. The purpose of this article is to show that there is another amendment that can be cited to prove the right enumerated in the Second Amendment is an individual right. [EN-1]

The Fourteenth Amendment, which was allegedly ratified by several States on July 9, 1868, [EN-2] states in part:

"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Kosher Swastikas

Hatchet editor Jake Sherman and reporter Robert Lee believed that they were on top of an important story with national interest as the victimized Marshak was abused again and again with five more swastikas in the next week.  They carried stories in which she complained about the university's lack of action, reached out for support to Jewish organizations and called upon the FBI to investigate the haters who had gone after her and, she explained, all Jews through her.  Finally she demanded that police install a camera to observe her door -- unaware that they had already done so.

On Nov. 5, Guy Fawkes Day, two weeks after the hate crimes against Marshak had begun, the Hatchet published its most explosive story yet.  University officials had confronted the culprit, who had been caught on camera and who had confessed.  It was Sarah Marshak herself.  The forces whom she had rallied to pursue and punish the bad guys now rallied behind her as a good guy. Failures of Welfare Reform - Peons in Debtor's Prison (Part Four)

There is a unique twist to our system that keeps it from applying to any of the traditional subhuman descriptions. In most of the systems described by the prior terms, it is either the state or a private debt that the peon is indentured to. In the case of child support state created by our welfare reform, the peon is beholden to both the state and a private debt. They are then taxed to pay for their abuse, torture, and/or murder at the hands of the state.

Despite popular fiction, child support is a private debt between the parents. Note that the orders usually have a plaintiff who sues for support from the defendant. It is not a criminal charge. It is a civil suit. As covered in “Part One” of the series, the process and procedures of the suit are predetermined, developed outside of any oversight by the legislators or electorate of the country.

Another point of great debate is whether or not the imprisonment of NCP who fall behind in their child support payments constitutes a “debtors prison.” (Read the rest here)

Hillary Flips over her Debate Flop

What are we to make of a presidential candidate who portrays herself as strong and independent, a courageous exemplar to the members of her gender -- but at the first hint of criticism collapses as the pitiable victim of gender politics?

Last Tuesday Hillary Clinton delivered a horrendous performance at the Democratic debate. She claimed she wanted to end the war in Iraq -- and in the next breath explained that as president, she would continue to guard our embassy, provide training, and continue to wage the fight against Al Qaeda. Laws, acts, restrictions, rules and regulations that are the wish list of special interest groups (lobbyists), using the government as their lever to get those laws passed. John McCain scored a standing ovation at the last Republican presidential debate when he attacked Sen. Hillary Clinton for proposing -- unsuccessfully -- to spend a million taxpayer dollars on a museum commemorating the 1969 Woodstock festival, saying, "Now, my friends, I wasn't there. I'm sure it was a cultural and pharmaceutical event. I was tied up at the time. But the fact is, my friends, no one can be president of the United States that supports projects such as these."

It would be easy to criticize McCain for politically exploiting his five-and-half years of suffering as a captive of the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war. But there's a more important point to be made. (Read the rest here)

Robert Nozick and the Immaculate Conception of the State

Ask a nonlibertarian academic for the title of a libertarian book. If they've heard of any, it will be Harvard Philosopher Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia, the winner of the 1975 National Book Award. Nozick's libertarianism was heavily influenced by the antistatist radicals of Murray Rothbard's circle, but Nozick was no Rothbardian. His book defended the existence of the state as both inevitable and necessary to liberty.

Name-calling may be acceptable in politics but it should have no place in science; indeed, what is happening smacks of McCarthyism, witch-hunts and all. Scientific understanding, however, is advanced by robust, reasoned argument based on well-researched data. So I turn to simple sets of data that are already in the public domain.

The last peak global temperatures were in 1998 and 1934 and the troughs of low temperature were around 1910 and 1970. Taxes and Terrorism

Taxes play a fundamental role in the development and maintenance of society. Indeed, they determine history, as we will be reminded next month when we hear the familiar story of the poor couple that had to travel to Bethlehem to register for a tax. One might be inclined to say that the history of civilization is the history of taxation, yet for all that, taxes are treated almost like a joke. "There’s nothing certain but death and taxes," we are told with a laugh, as though it were true, and taxes a mere annoyance.

There is much more to taxation, however, than simple theft under color of law. There is an underlying philosophy of taxation, both in the minds of the rulers and the ruled, that enhances the iniquity.

At the very soul of taxation is the belief that your property is yours only to the extent that the rulers allow it. Taxes are a frontal assault upon private property, which is a basic human right second only to the right to life itself. No government has ever existed without taxation, which is to say that no government has ever existed without the rulers claiming that what is "yours" is, in fact, theirs.
