We start out this week with the mess in Burma; a mess caused by a simple problem: the ordinary people of Burma are not armed and are incapable of defending themselves against the tyrants. Burma
front: Although the illegal regime in Burma has declared everything to be normal, it is clear that the situation is far from resolved, and the quote in this snippet shows the answer. (Read the rest here) (Two pages!)
The Constitution
did not Abolish the System of Government Established by the Articles of
Confederation and Consolidate the States into One Nation Last week I received a link to an article by Laurence M. Vance entitled: Is Our Government Legitimate? The article questions the validity of the government established by the Constitution because the members of the Federal [Constitutional] Convention were not empowered to write a new constitution. They were sent by their individual State "for the sole and express purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation." Under the Articles, any revision required the consent of all the States because the document was a compact [contract] or union between the thirteen united States. Since the Constitution went into effect when the 9th State ratified it [New Hampshire on June 21, 1788], adoption of the Constitution could, in the words of Mr. Vance, be "the most successful fraud in American history." Nuclear Dictatorship -- The Portland Plan In the last month we have learned that Dick Cheney was eager to urge an Israeli attack on Iran to provoke an Iranian counterattack on Israel, and thereby take the United States into another Middle Eastern war. In the last week we have learned that declassified NSA transcripts prove conclusively that the US government lied to us for 40 years to cover up the truth of Israel's premeditated attempt to sink the USS Liberty and kill its crew during their Six-Day War. Friday we saw George W. Bush insisting on TV that his government would never dream of committing torture -- even as reports were surfacing to prove that the lie he was telling had been a lie since he began telling us three years ago. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, since by now we know that the Bush administration is capable of anything. (Read the rest here)
Women Who Batter, Proudly Chivalrous men resist the image, but it's a problem that has become so pervasive that we must summon up the courage to face it - an epidemic of women who pummel their husbands and boyfriends. A recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control found that among physically aggressive couples, 71% of the instigators in nonreciprocal partner violence were female. And last year Renee McDonald of Baylor University published a study in the Journal of Family Psychology with almost identical results. What's going on, ladies? (Read the rest here)
Nifong
and HRES 590 The Nifonging of the three lacrosse players from Duke University did not rise out of a vacuum. Rather, it was the product of two systemic problems in America, the tendency amongst many prosecutors and judges to replace the concern for justice with the concern for self-promotion and career advancement, and, in cases of certain politically charged crimes, anti-male bias. Illustrative of the bias, on September 25, 2007, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on domestic violence, HRES 590, that stereotypes men as wife-beaters. A thorough analysis of the resolution by RADAR (Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting) found that 18 of its 23 statements are either misleading or simply wrong. Two in particular unfairly smear fathers: (Read the rest here)
From
the Archives When you live in mortal fear of something like many gun control advocates do, it seems that nothing is off the table where debate (I use the term loosely) techniques are concerned. Even when there's little for them to use in the way of argument fodder, they'll take what there is and fold, bend, spindle and mutilate it to suit their needs at the time. On some occasions, when there's nothing at all to use they'll simply fabricate their "evidence." And, like so many falsehoods or misrepresentations, the more the lies are repeated, the more believable they become to the credulous members of the public. (Read the rest here)
The
Future of Freedom Foundation What is the common term for ordering soldiers to kill vast numbers of innocent people? A war crime. But not when it is done on the command of the U.S. president. Killing innocent foreigners seems to be a perk of the modern presidency akin to the bands playing Hail to the Chief when he enters the room. (Read the rest here)
The
Independent Institute With the 2007 farm bill temporarily stalled in the Senate, this is a good time to reconsider Americas schizophrenic agriculture programs and how they often work at cross-purposes. Consider government subsidies. Under the current farm bill, enacted in 2002, government payments to farmers averaged about $17.5 billion annually from 2003 to 2006. The House-passed 2007 farm bill would cost an additional $286 billion over five years, including both direct payments and other provisions. (Read the rest here)
Individual
Liberty - 101 On
September 18 the Fed cut its target for the fed funds rate by 50 basis
points (0.5 percentage points), from 5.25% to 4.75%. The move surprised
many analysts who had been expecting a more modest cut of 25 basis points.
External Articles Modern states are fictions of the mind brought to life. They are false gods. False gods are worshipped. They are represented in clay, wood, and stone. We make them seem authentic to us. It will seem insane to deny their credentials, when we have their shapes and images in front of us. When we use them to send us to the deaths that we crave. When we give them credit where none is due. When we fear them and obey their imagined instructions. Yet these false gods are nothing more than projections of our own minds. They are ultimately made up and counterfeit. They are vain imaginings of the mind used to nullify our being. They are used to reduce us from human beings to ciphers. The false priests of the state preach the false god of the state in the temples of Washington, London, Beijing, Moscow, Tokyo, and Caracas. Smash these idols. Utterly destroy them. Let no remnant of them remain. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
Peace or Economic Catastrophe If Americans do nothing very different, most of us will have a better economic future, and so will our children, if we can avoid war. These five words if we can avoid war are crucial. I have in mind war in the broadest sense. It includes terrorism. If we can somehow recover peace as a society and not spread war, which will produce low-intensity, low-tech, low-cost retaliatory domestic terrorism inside our borders, economic growth will do its astounding work. The magnificent fact of the free market system over the last quarter of a millennium is this: economic growth compounds. Recessions come and go. Wars come and go. Inflations come and go. Economic growth continues. It produces miracles. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Use the back button to return.)
