Exclusive to The Price of Liberty
Libertarian Commentary on The News, 26 August- 01 September, 2007
By Nathan A. Barton © 2007

Welcome to September: traditional school-starting time (although far too many government-run, tax-funded schools now demand to own children almost year around), traditional end of the summer vacation season, midpoint of the hurricane season, and the first tinges of yellow and gold in the high country.

Thugs:
‘Left Turn Ahead’ and Other Slogan Suggestions for Democrats
CNS News
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee – a group that works to elect Democrats to the Senate – put out a call for catchy “bumper sticker” slogans last week, and it says the suggestions are rolling in. Want to hear a few?

Seems simple enough to me: “DEMOCRATS – We aren’t the GOP!” Of course there are lots of good ones contending, like “President Bush – reason enough to vote for Democrats” and “Queen Hillary and PM Pelosi – Peace in Our Time” and “If you think things can’t get worse, vote Democratic.” Or how about (see below): “We aren’t hypocrites like Larry Craig” – which would be true: you have to have some moral beliefs in order to be a hypocrite. (Oh, my internal censor tells me I’m being too harsh – Democrats and Liberals (like most politicians) DO have moral beliefs: they believe in power and self-aggrandizement.) Should Christians Comply With Gun Confiscation?
By Doug Newman

"If the government put down a law tomorrow that said we had to turn in all privately owned fire arms, as Christians, should we obey that law? I am a Christian and I believe that we should obey that government edict because they are NOT asking me to disobey God's word...what is your opinion on this?"

I answered:

I don't know where you are in your knowledge of the Bible. However, if you rely on most churches anymore for your Bible education, I see how you would think this. However, the idea that Christians should comply with gun confiscation is not biblical. (Read the rest here)

The Thing vs. Some Dumb Flatfoots
by Bob Wallace

Sounds like one of those movie serials from the '30's and '40's, doesn't it? The kind where this happened:

CAPTAIN YANCY: Yer surrounded, Thing! Give up! You can't get away!

THING: Come and get me, coppers! You'll never take me alive! (RAT-A-TAT-TAT-TAT!)

Nope, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the Thing, Ben Grimm, from the Fantastic Four. The guy who looked like an animated pile of rocks, and whose best-known saying is, "It's clobberin' time!" (Read the rest here)

Foreshadows of "The Kennebunkport Warning"
By Captain Eric H. May - Special Military Correspondent

The Kennebunkport Warning is short and strident at 200 words. It has been posted widely on the Internet, and in last week's edition of The Lone Star Iconoclast. Since then, though, it has come under sustained fire from a swiftboat attack aimed at its authors and signers, and even its word choices. Every aspect of the document has been called into question -- except its content.

It warns that soon the Bush administration may stage another 911 at home, or a Gulf of Tonkin incident abroad, to justify domestic dictatorship and a war on Iran.

Time to Scale Back the Pedestal?
By Carey Roberts

Has the pedestal has gone the way of the bustle, the bobbie sock, and the beehive hairdo?

It's a question that liberals instantly dismiss -- after all, we're all supposed to be absolutely equal. And conservative men shrink from serious discussion of the issue, preferring to seek refuge in their chivalrous instincts.

But let's ask the question anyway: Do we need to down-size the pedestal? (Read the rest here)

Calling Mr. Obvious
By Lady Liberty

Every weekday morning, I listen to my favorite morning radio program. The Bob and Tom Show amuses me, and at that time of day I need all the amusement I can get. Although I appreciate the news, interviews, and other regular facets of the show, one of my favorite bits involves a recurring character named Mr. Obvious.

Mr. Obvious hosts a little radio show of his own, and his listeners call in with problems for him to solve. On one episode, a homeowner was terrified that a wild animal had gotten into his house and taken up residence under his kitchen sink. Thanks to Mr. Obvious, he was relieved to learn the growling and chewing noises were caused not by an animal who got upset every time someone flipped a light switch, but by his garbage disposal. On another episode, an incredulous Mr. Obvious had to tell an accident-prone driver that sun screens were great to keep cars cool, but that it was important the screens be removed before actually driving anywhere. The Carnage in Iraq—Past, Present, and Future
By Robert Higgs

The headline of an August 22, 2007, article in the New York Times reads, “Citing Vietnam, Bush Warns of Carnage if U.S. Leaves Iraq.” Readers with live brain cells must be stunned by such a warning. What, exactly, does President Bush imagine is happening every day in Iraq now? Does he envision scenes of social tranquility and cooperative harmony amid the peaceful palms of Mesopotamia? And what, one wonders, does he suppose was going on earlier in Vietnam, as the U.S. forces extended their unwelcome stay year after grisly year? At times, observing the president and listening to his speeches, one simply doesn’t know what to make of him. Is he actually as detached from reality as he appears to be? And do his handlers really believe that at this late date, the American people will take seriously the rhetoric his speech writers persist in putting into his mouth? (Read the rest here)

Iraq and Vietnam
by Sheldon Richman

President Bush, one of the two most famous pro-Vietnam War members of his generation to avoid fighting in that war, has finally accepted what he previously rejected: that there are parallels between the war he ducked out of and his violent occupation of Iraq. (The other best-known famous pro-war war avoider is Vice President Dick "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service" Cheney.)

Unfortunately, Bush has learned a far different lesson from Vietnam than many others have. "Whatever your position is on that debate [about how we got into the Vietnam War and how we left], one unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America's withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens whose agonies would add to our vocabulary new terms like 'boat people,' 'reeducation camps,' and 'killing fields.'" Others have already corrected Bush's predictably bad history. (Read the rest here)

Katrina and the Great Flood of 1927
By Mark Thornton

To that end we reprint today my article from 1999 which recounted the Great Flood of 1927.

The similarities are startling. A known threat was approaching and yet all the government spending and planning completely failed. In fact, in both cases the government turned a normal problem into a major disaster. The African American population was hurt disproportionately in both cases. In 1927 Herbert Hoover promised aid and assistance which failed to materialize (this was a major reason for the black exodus from the Republican to the Democrat party). In 2005 it was another Republican president that promised enormous relief aid which failed to materialize. In both cases it was individuals and organizations — both commercial and charitable — that did the real work of reconstruction. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. The Supercharged Stock Market: An Object Lesson in the Perils of Coercion
by Stefan Molyneux

We all know how the government messes up the stock market through printing money, inflation, hyper-regulation, controlling interest rates, defense spending, deficit financing and so on – but there is another factor at work that is less obvious.

As we all know, the stock market is designed to allow companies to raise money by selling shares to individuals. Individuals should ideally only invest in companies that they understand – investing in unknown companies or markets is more appropriately termed "speculation" rather than investment, and is generally indistinguishable from gambling.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with gambling, as long as you risk your own money, and at your own discretion. However, particularly since the Second World War, governments around the world have been increasingly forcing us at gunpoint to put our money into the stock market, much to the delight of money managers, corporate executives, stockbrokers – and politicians.
