Commentary on The News,
01 - 07 July, 2007 Some of the most important news of the week was hidden or buried, but here is again hoping that you were able to celebrate Liberty Day and Independence Day properly, and that this weeks news and commentary will encourage all of us to enjoy and fight for or liberties in all parts of life! Economy: If you believe this propaganda over what you see in the grocery stores and the bills for utilities and other things that arrive in your mail, you have my pity. General prices are exploding, fueled by gasoline prices (even if they took a slight dip), health care costs, and a dozen other factors. Mama's Note: Indeed! Just remember that our glorious leaders have decided it's much better for us to burn our corn, so the price of nearly everything has gone insane. This includes milk, meat, eggs, cheese - since corn is a major feed for animals, and any other products made with corn. And don't forget that gas and oil are vital elements in the production of most things, farm and otherwise (as well as the transport, even of things not made from oil itself). The tractors, reapers, processors, fertilizers and various necessary chemicals all operate on or are derived from oil products. Thus, wheat and other farm products continue to increase in price almost daily. And, since the use of corn to produce the gas additive is much more expensive than producing old fashioned gas, we are paying through the nose in taxes for subsidies as well as at the pump and the grocery store. We may hope that the producers of these things can find an alternative to corn soon, but don't hold your breath. Hemp could replace corn in almost every application except breakfast cereal, but of course our benevolent overlords are not about to allow that!!! (Read the rest here) [Two full pages again!]

Victims Disarmed By OSHA Regulation THIS IS URGENT: Deadline for comments is 12 JUL 2007. A good explanation of this bizarre proposed rule here. I quote in part: As written, the proposed rule would force the closure of nearly all ammunition manufacturers and force the cost of small arms ammunition to skyrocket beyond what the market could bearessentially collapsing our industry. This is not an exaggeration. The cost to comply with the proposed rule for the ammunition industry, including manufacturer, wholesale distributors and retailers, will be massive and easily exceed $100 million. For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached and customers would not be allowed within 50 feet of any ammunition (displayed or otherwise stored) without first being searched for matches or lighters. NSSF is urging all retailers to contact OSHA directly and request a 60-day extension of the public comment period. Retailers should inform OSHA that the proposed rule constitutes a "significant regulatory action" as defined in Executive Order 12866 (1993) Section 3(f)(1) in that it will clearly "adversely affect in a material way" the retail sector of the firearms and ammunition industry, productivity, competition and jobs and that the annual compliance cost for all retailers of ammunition will far exceed $100 million dollars. You can read the whole nasty thing here. (Read the rest here)
Land
of the free and the home of the brave... Independence Day (I refuse to say "4th of July") has become a difficult time for me in the last decade or so. To say that I'm ambivalent - or even downright cynical - is an awful understatement sometimes. And yet, I can't help but remember history, the fine and lofty hopes and dreams of so many people - past and present. I can't help but be moved when I read the declaration, or consider the incredible sacrifice so many have made to make that declaration live... regardless of the rightness or wrongness of the outcome. In so many ways, so much of the time, I've become terribly cynical. I've lost most hope that ordinary people can see that they've been duped and conditioned to accept - even demand - slavery for themselves and their children. I have a hard time believing that any but a hard core remnant will ever do the hard work of learning different and accepting personal responsibility for their own lives with integrity and non-aggression as their foundation. FROM JEWS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF FIREARMS OWNERSHIP JPFO's latest documentary film The Gang has received a glowing review from Buckeye Firearms Association (www.buckeyefirearms.com). They conclude, "The Gang is a must see for all gun owners and constitutionalists. This documentary is a great tool to use to help open the eyes of the general public to this very real threat to our Second Amendment rights." Read the full review. (Read the rest here)
Is July 4 A Christian Holiday? America, we hear time and time again, was founded on Christian principles. However, we almost never stop to examine what this means. Another July 4 has come and gone. Like most holidays, it is not a time for philosophical reflection. Rather, it is for fireworks, trips to the beach or to the mountains, cookouts, baseball games and sales at the mall. Oh sure, your pastor may say something thanking God for the liberty we Americans enjoy. But this is about as far as it goes. 231 years ago in Philadelphia, 56 men signed their names to a declaration, not only of independence from Britain, but of a set of philosophical propositions for human government. While the Declaration of Independence is not ostensibly a Christian document, God's Fingerprints are all over it. (Read the rest here)

The Archives Let me introduce myself, one of the founders of The Price of Liberty.org. I thought that my story might inspire others who are struggling with the questions of "left" vs. "right" and wondering what else there could be that makes more sense. So, just who is this guy with the strange name and questionable writing style? Just who is ZooT_aLLures? I wasn't raised in a freedom minded environment, but rather in the ghettos of a big city in the upper Midwest. (Read the rest here)
The
Independent Institute U.S. leaders need to face the reality that interventionist U.S. foreign policy has consequences on the nuclear proliferation front. Those who encouraged and supported Americas post-Cold war military interventions Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals need to ask themselves whether increasing the incentives for nuclear proliferation was worth the price of intervention when U.S. national security was not at stake. Especially when that price is now the potential threat of nuclear terrorism. (Read the rest here)
The
Future of Freedom Foundation The Fourth of July celebrations brought forth the predictable pronouncements that U.S. troops in Iraq are defending the freedoms expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, most of the "freedoms" that Americans celebrating on Independence Day are antithetical to the genuine principles of freedom enunciated in the Declaration. There is no better way to demonstrate this than by contrasting the freedoms that Americans in, say, 1880 were celebrating on the Fourth of July with those "freedoms" that Americans celebrate today. In 1880 America, there was no income taxation, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, public (i.e., government) schools, drug laws, gun control, immigration controls, foreign wars, or foreign aid. Economic regulations were few. That is what it once meant to be an American. That is what it once meant to be free. (Read the rest here)

Economic Lessons from the Amish The Amish are interesting people. Having lived much of my life in a rural area with a significant Amish population, I have had the opportunity to interact with them, and have some level of understanding of the culture. It is a fascinating study. The Amish make a conscious choice to live without most of the modern conveniences that Americans take for granted. They have strong religious beliefs and a commitment to principles. Different communities have varying perspectives on what is allowable and what is not, but they all have a common belief that they must maintain a separation from the world and worldly things. They provide lessons to us that they may not intend, but are valuable nonetheless. Their life is centered around the local Amish community, and they live separate lives from non-Amish people around them. They generally don't use insurance, but they share risk in a different way. They have a strong sense of internal community, and in time of disaster, they are drawn together to help their neighbors. When someone's barn burns down, there is a barn raising, where the whole community gathers to build a new one. It is an amazing display of cooperation. the gun is civilization Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some. Wyoming On a dirt road up past the Newcastle fairgrounds, lining a driveway marked with a "PRIVATE PROPERTY" sign, a movement is taking root in Wyoming. Or maybe it's a phenomenon. Or just some caragana bushes. Maybe it's just new friends helping each other out, without being forced to. They can live with that. Mac Frank, his wife Vicki and Susan Callaway begin digging holes starting at the entrance to the Wyoming home Callaway says she was called to in the spring of 2006. A pair of California license plates from her former life leans up against the Newcastle cabin. They are riddled with bullet holes. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website. Draws Freedom Lovers The unique value of living in the Interior West is the "live and let live" attitude. If Colorado continues to move in the direction of "live the way you're told," those who don't want politicians and bureaucrats to run their lives will increasingly look to parts of the Interior West with less-corrupted souls. Such as Wyoming. From June 22-24, around 130 people traveled to Guernsey, Wyoming, to socialize, shoot guns, and discuss plans for moving into the state. Sponsored by Free State Wyoming (FSW), the event drew some of those interested in moving to the state as part of a semi-organized plan. People traveled from Oregon, New York, Texas, and states in between to pitch a tent and enjoy the fresh air and the company. (Read the rest here) (Read the entire article at the source website.
