2007 From the way they are described by the illuminati, "illegal's" should be fairly easy to round up. They're the little brown folks hanging out at hospital emergency rooms, plotting terrorist acts, driving drunk, loitering at the local welfare office, stealing jobs from willing American laborers or dropping off their kids for some "free" government education (you get what you pay for; sometimes). If you listen to the talking heads you'd think these illegal's are nothing more than a bunch of lazy, parasitic scum that have come to suck the life blood out of the United States of Ameriika (which coincidentally is an accurate description of politicians). But reality is not quite so simple or xenophobic. What is the main reason illegal's come to the US? Is it for the "great" government school education that is "envied" around the world? Are they drawn by the majestic wonder of hospital waiting rooms? Do they come here with the express purpose of destroying civilization? To sing in Spanish on American Idol? For cheap beer and a date with Paris Hilton? If you listen to politicians or talk radio you'd think any of those would be the reason some folks make a mad dash over a state imposed boundary. The truth is actually quite simple; they come to get a job and improve their lot in life, which are the same reasons folks have been coming here for over 400 years. Are "illegal" immigrant children really getting a free government school education? No more so than anyone else. Illegal's, like everyone else, have to live somewhere. That means, directly or indirectly, they are paying property taxes just like the rest of us serfs. And when illegals aren't plotting terrorist attacks, driving while intoxicated or taking in the sights at the local emergency room, they are consuming and paying sales tax (not to mention keeping other folks in business and employed). Government schools are funded by property and sales taxes, therefore illegals are paying for their children's "free" education like the rest of us fools. Do illegals really steal jobs from American workers? You could argue that point if you where Gus Hall, Karl Marx or Vladimir Lenin, but in a free market, capitalist society nobody can steal a job. With the exception of government jobs, work is awarded to the lowest and most efficient bidder ultimately keeping prices low. Just imagine how much you would spend at the produce section of your supermarket if the EEOC or the UAW gained control of the agricultural labor market. Another argument I hear is that these folks "broke the law" by coming here without permission and therefore should be deported. In order to find the "lawbreakers" the government will need to institute new laws, perhaps a national ID card, or set up check points all around the country and randomly stop and search folks, raid workplaces and check IDs, and subject employers to the whim and will of bureaucrats with the backing and power of the state. Perhaps while they are looking for illegal immigrants, these agents of the state will find other forms of "illegality." Maybe you failed to mention a part time job that paid you cash on your income tax return. Perhaps you don't have the required prescription for that Viagra or Prozac in your car. Maybe you didn't register your gun or you forgot" to get a permit for that addition on your home. Do you think that state agents will overlook these "minor infractions" simply because you are in this country "legally?" Perhaps it's a good time for some folks to read the famous poem by Martin Niemöller. What does being an American mean? Is it tied to your place of birth? Does it mean that you obey every law no matter how heinous, senseless or stupid? If those were the cases for being American we would still be drinking heavily taxed tea with our crumpets. If America had acted during the Irish Potato Famine the way Mr. Hannity wants it to today, he'd be doing his show from Dublin (if at all). Being American is about defending and cherishing your rights as an individual, while respecting the rights of others and doing your best to sustain yourself and your family with the fruits of your labor. No one really knows how to solve the problem of "illegal" immigration (if it really exists), but what is clear is that our problems will only be compounded if we turn the US into an Orwellian police state. While the politicians and their lap dogs in the media distract you with a message of xenophobic hate, your taxes rise, life becomes more regulated by the state, your basic freedoms disappear, and the worth of your money is devalued by inflation. So be nice to the Mexicans because, who knows, you just might have to cross the border some day. (Maybe they shouldn't make that fence so high).
