April
30, 2007 Radio "shock jock" Don Imus said a bad thing. In a relatively brief on-air exchange with a producer, he referred to the women of the Rutgers University basketball team as "nappy headed hos." He also said that the women on the Tennessee team were "cute," but the Rutgers team members were "rough," and he strongly implied that they were not cute. Under normal circumstances, Imus wouldn't have been likely to mention the predominantly black Rutgers team at all. But Rutgers was blessed with a talented group of women on this year's team, and that talent - along with a lot of hard work and determination - saw the women playing for the national championship and getting attention accordingly. Commentary on The News, 22
-28 April, 2007 “Hillary Reveals Plans for Bill” is my lead story this week, because I couldn’t resist. And I even have (gasp) a second article that might be part of the news around the 2008 elections. I’ve not had a quote recently, so here is a neat one. Guess who said it, and then read to the end of the column to see who did! "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or anyone else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else." US
Cesspools (Politics): I know that I am staying away from the insanely early 2008 election campaign, but this headline was too good to pass by. We all are sure that Mrs. C. has “plans” for her wayward husband, but somehow I don’t think that AOL has the lowdown on them. And of course, he doesn’t need to tell us (or her) that he will “do anything” – he’s proved that for decades. (Read the rest here) Two full pages again!!

Way It Should Have Been School Shooter: BLAM! BLAM ! BLAM! Student: Ohmigod! There's a school shooter outside the door! He's going to break in and shoot all of us! Armed Student: Nah. (Whips out .45 semi-automatic pistol) Liberal Nitwit Student: Hey! It's illegal to carry a handgun! I'm calling the police! Armed Student: Go ahead. The 101st call isn't going to make them show up any faster. (Read the rest here)
Back
to the Roots... Again Once
you have felt the needless pain of the deaths of our fathers and mothers,
how many more times should one write about it? Does the next self inflicted
death make it more repugnant? More deadly? More fascsist? More actionable? Since this roots article was written - 100,000 men/fathers? have ended their suffering permanently. 24,000 women/mothers? have ended their suffering permanently. Proportionally, there would be slightly more fathers than non-fathers, but in view of how many fathers are stressed beyond life, it would be very surprising data that did not show marked and significant suicide preference for disenfranchised parents. Security and Liberty The senseless and horrific killings last week on the campus of Virginia Tech University reinforced an uneasy feeling many Americans experienced after September 11th: namely, that government cannot protect us. No matter how many laws we pass, no matter how many police or federal agents we put on the streets, a determined individual or group still can cause great harm. Perhaps the only good that can come from these terrible killings is a reinforced understanding that we as individuals are responsible for our safety and the safety of our families. VAWA Casts a Long Shadow over the Duke Fiasco Was prosecutor Michael Nifong simply an over-rated ambulance chaser who rose to his level of incompetence? Was he a scheming opportunist who needed to boost his flagging re-election chances? Or did his dogged prosecution of the Duke Three reflect a deeper, more systemic problem in our criminal justice system? Here's the dirty little secret of D.A.s who prosecute sexual assault and domestic violence cases: many of the claims they pursue are as flaky as a pie crust and their chances of winning a jury conviction are slim. So why do they bother to go after the case? (Read the rest here)

The Archives In 1940, at Dunkirk, on the northern coast of France, a British military officer sent a telegram to London consisting of the following three words: But if not. The person in London who read the telegram recognized this as a reference to the Old Testament (Daniel 3:17-18, KJV): If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. When faced with the choice of serving God or serving man, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would sooner be incinerated than worship a graven image. (Read the rest here)

Independent Institute Michael Chertoff, President Bushs secretary of Homeland Security, desperately tried to refute Zbigniew Brzezinskis cogent charge that the administration has hyped the war on terror to promote a culture of fear, in a recent Washington Post op-ed. In addition to shamefully smearing Brzezinski, Jimmy Carters former National Security Advisor, by associating him with the fringe opinion that the administration plotted the 9/11 terrorist acts, Chertoff also declared, Al-Qaeda and its ilk have a world vision that is comparable to that of historical totalitarian ideologues but adapted to the 21stcentury global network. This rhetoric makes it seem as if al-Qaeda is more dangerous than Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin. When comparisons are made to these villainous titans, we should be suspicious. (Read the rest here)

Future of Freedom Foundation In one of those vapid, in-house disputes often published in The New York Review of Bookss letters-to-the-editor sections, we can read about a disagreement among educational experts under the heading Scandals in Higher Education: An Exchange (4/26/07). Well, not much of a disagreement because none of the participants gives a quarter to basic challenges to how colleges and universities are funded. They all accept, without question, that it is the business of governments to run most of the countrys colleges and universities, so the disagreement is on mere details. (Read the rest here)
Individual
Liberty - 101 But if, as we assume, legitimate government is created to stop us from plundering one another and threatening one another's lives, property, and freedom, how is it justifiable to take a person's property in order to fund the very government that is established to protect that property? The inconsistency is obvious, and reminiscent of the Platonic conundrum of "who watches the watchers?" How can we justify government confiscating some of our property in order to protect our property? How much is enough? How is that decided? What if one does not want to comply? Each generation hopes their children and grandchildren will achieve more economic potential and more individual freedom than prior generations. As a new grandfather I researched economic conditions and education quality facing the generation of my infant grandchildren and their parents, compared to that faced by my generation when their age. The results are available to you in a series of free mini-reports listed on the home page - with explanatory pictures. There are so many great & positive things about our beloved America to celebrate. But, there are also some negative trends. Perhaps if more are aware of the negatives even more solutions & positives will result. The objective of these reports is to increase awareness of certain disturbing items, using an easy-to-understand format with hard data presented in picture form.
