April 16, 2007
In a Town Hall Meeting in Hampton, New Hampshire last week, a woman in the audience engaged in a heated exchange with presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton concerning the Senator’s vote to authorize the war in Iraq.  When asked several times if she had read the intelligence report given to her in 2002, Clinton would not answer the question directly but stated she had been briefed on its contents.  In a classic example of Monday morning quarterbacking, Clinton stated: “If I had known then what I know now, I never would have voted to give this President the authority.”  Then the smartest woman in the world inferred that she had been tricked because she believed she was only giving President Bush the authority to send United Nations [U.N.] inspectors to Iraq.

The kool aid drinking Clintonites in the audience fell for this blatant lie and voiced their approval by applauding even though the legislation Clinton voted for is entitled: “Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq .  Apparently, the aspiring commander in chief does not know the difference between U.N. inspectors and United States Armed Forces.

Senator Clinton may be able to mislead her dupes in New Hampshire but there is a bogeyman in her closet whose speech proves she is a blatant liar concerning her latest comments on the war in Iraq.

The speech states in part:

“Earlier today, I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.
Their purpose is to protect the national interest of the United States, and indeed the interests of people throughout the Middle East and around the world.

Saddam Hussein must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons.

I want to explain why I have decided, with the unanimous recommendation of my national security team, to use force in Iraq; why we have acted now...

[S]addam Hussein announced that he would no longer cooperate with the United Nations weapons inspectors called UNSCOM. They are highly professional experts from dozens of countries. Their job is to oversee the elimination of Iraq’s capability to retain, create and use weapons of mass destruction...

Other countries possess weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles. With Saddam, there is one big difference: He has used them. Not once, but repeatedly.

The international community had little doubt then, and I have no doubt today, that left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will use these terrible weapons again.

The international community gave Saddam one last chance to resume cooperation with the weapons inspectors. Saddam has failed to seize the chance. And so we had to act and act now.

[W]ithout a strong inspection system, Iraq would be free to retain and begin to rebuild its chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs in months, not years.

[I]f Saddam can crippled the weapons inspection system and get away with it, he would conclude that the international community—led by the United States—has simply lost its will. He will surmise that he has free rein to rebuild his arsenal of destruction, and someday—make no mistake—he will use it again as he has in the past.

[I]f we turn our backs on his defiance, the credibility of U.S. power as a check against Saddam will be destroyed. We will not only have allowed Saddam to shatter the inspection system that controls his weapons of mass destruction program; we also will have fatally undercut the fear of force that stops Saddam from acting to gain domination in the region.

That is why, on the unanimous recommendation of my national security team—including the vice president, the secretary of defense, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, the secretary of state and the national security adviser—I have ordered a strong, sustained series of air strikes against Iraq. They are designed to degrade Saddam’s capacity to develop and deliver weapons of mass destruction, and to degrade his ability to threaten his neighbors.

The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world. The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government—a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people. Bringing change in Baghdad will take time and effort.

The decision to use force is never cost-free. Whenever American forces are placed in harm’s way, we risk the loss of life. And while our strikes are focused on Iraq’s military capabilities, there will be unintended Iraqi casualties. Indeed, in the past, Saddam has intentionally placed Iraqi civilians in harm’s way in a cynical bid to sway international opinion. We must be prepared for these realities...  Heavy as they are, the costs of action must be weighed against the price of inaction.

And mark my words, he will develop weapons of mass destruction. He will deploy them, and he will use them. Because we’re acting today, it is less likely that we will face these dangers in the future.”

The bogeyman that made this speech was not the present clown in the White House; it was Bill Clinton on December 16, 1998.

At the time this speech was made and beyond, Senator Clinton claimed she helped shape domestic and foreign policy during her husband’s presidency.  Therefore, she had to be well aware of the situation in Iraq years before her vote in 2002.

At the time her husband took this action in 1998, the people in the Clinton Administration, including then self-proclaimed co-president Hillary Clinton, claimed they were foreign policy visionaries.  Now, according to Senator Clinton, there were no weapons of mass destruction and the intelligence given to her in 2002 was doctored by the Bush Administration to trick her and other members of Congress into supporting military operations against Iraq.

Hopefully, one of her opponents will use this speech to show that Hillary Clinton is nothing but a shameless liar who puts the acquisition of power above the truth.  But since most politicians suffer from this same affliction 24/7, don’t count on them exposing her lies anytime soon.

Robert Greenslade focuses his writing on issues surrounding the federal government and the Constitution. He believes politicians at the federal level, through ignorance or design, are systematically dismantling the Constitution in an effort to expand their power and consolidate control over the American people. He has dedicated himself to resurrecting the true intent of the Constitution in the hope that the information will contribute, in some small way, to restoring the system of limited government established by the Constitution.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Constitution, take a look at this book. I use it in many of my articles and it is the best book I've found on this subject. Bob

The Federal Government: Its True Nature and Character: Being a Review of Judge Story's Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States.

Reprint of the 1868 edition. ''Perhaps the ablest analysis of the nature and character of the federal government that has ever been published. It has remained unanswered.'' This review of Judge Story's Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States is perhaps the ablest analysis of the nature and character of the Federal Government that has ever been published. It has remained unanswered. Indeed, we are not aware that any attempt has been made to challenge the soundness of its reasoning. The great vise of Judge Story and the Federalists consisted in desiring the clothe the federal government with almost monarchical power, whereas the States had carefully and resolutely reserved the great mass of political power for themselves. The powers which they delegated to the federal government were few, and were general in their character. Those which they reserved embraced their original and inalienable sovereignty, which no state imagined it was surrendering when it adopted the constitution. Mr. Madison dwelt with great force upon the fact that ''a delegated is not a surrendered power.'' The states surrendered no powers to the federal government -- they only delegated them. 160 pages.
