John Yoo: Neocon Treason and Plot --
A Freedom-Lover's Version of the Guy Fawkes Poem
By Stewart Rhodes © 2006

Happy Guy Fawkes Day!

Remember, remember the 29th of September
Military Commissions Act, assault on the Bill of Rights by a vile lot;
I see no reason why the Neocon Treason
Should ever be forgot.

John Yoo, John Yoo,
'Tis his intent
To give us a King and a Parliament.
By stroke of a pen or by rubber stamp, his Leader will throw
you into a camp.
Complicit judges and Congress in tow
Our Constitution to overthrow.

The Who's Who of Gratuitous Torture
By L. Reichard White

So U.S. Sen. McCain, himself a victim of torture during the Vietnam "War" -- and U.S. Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld -- know torture doesn't work. And, we would hope, so do political leaders, Israelis and Americans and most other folks all over the world -- including Republicans and Democrats. And Mr. Bush says we'd never do it - - - (Read the rest here) (See the videos!)

The Mother of All Lies
By Michael Gaddy

Of all the lies that have been told by George W. Bush, including the multitude of lies that led to the aggressive invasion of Iraq that has become a full blown, out of control, civil war; nothing can compare with the one he told when he said recently, "We are winning the war in Iraq." To say this in the face of the huge number of casualties suffered by the US Military this month is beyond incredible.

My sources tell me the only soil we control in Iraq is that on which our Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) set. The Insurgency forces control the towns and the countryside and are making life miserable even for those inside the Green Zone. The Sadr Brigade alone is now estimated to number over 100,000 and they are just one of the many militant forces active in Iraq. How long ago was it now that we were told the Insurgency was only a few diehards numbering less than 12,000? (Read the rest here)

Targets and Tools
By ZooT_aLLures
Technical Editor

Recently, while reading the forum at "Strike The Root", I came across an interesting thread. Several readers were discussing whether the internet or the entertainment industry would be the victim of "the next terrorist attack", with the pretense being to stifle the free exchange of opinions and information.

I think that government could care less what we think or talk about, but greatly fear, what people can DO. Therefore: I don't think either the internet nor television will be the "victim" of the next "attack".

If one were to consider not the target, but rather the TOOL of the attack, one would find that "transportation" and the control of transportation is a prime factor in this equation.

The first attack used "airplanes", and as a result all air traffic is filtered and scrutinized, and placed under very limiting "control". I have not seen nor heard any call for legislation limiting the size nor capacity of buildings since 9/11, and therefore believe that tools rather than targets are to be limited. It's Your Choice
By Lady Liberty

Too many times in too many elections, most of us have felt forced to cast our votes for the lesser evil. It seems that all too often a candidate representing the greater good just didn't exist. Unfortunately, even when such candidates do exist, we find reasons not to vote for them. We worry that we're throwing our vote away because our preferred candidate can't win. We're convinced that voting for our preferred candidate will merely take votes away from the person we consider the lesser evil, allowing the greater evil to win. We're afraid that we might know enough about the candidates to vote wisely, but that too many others haven't even heard of "our" candidate.

During these mid-term elections, something different seems to be happening. Poll after poll shows that voters are disenchanted and disgusted with both major parties. It seems to be an ideal time for third party candidates to come into their own. But even as politics and our own impatience with the status quo seems to be opening things up to the notion of alternative parties and candidates, the mainstream media seems determined to hold the battleground to those we've come to know and loathe. The NAFTA Superhighway
by Congressman Ron Paul - R - TX

By now many Texans have heard about the proposed “NAFTA Superhighway,” which is also referred to as the trans-Texas corridor. What you may not know is the extent to which plans for such a superhighway are moving forward without congressional oversight or media attention.

This superhighway would connect Mexico, the United States, and Canada, cutting a wide swath through the middle of Texas and up through Kansas City. Offshoots would connect the main artery to the west coast, Florida, and northeast. Proponents envision a ten-lane colossus the width of several football fields, with freight and rail lines, fiber-optic cable lines, and oil and natural gas pipelines running alongside. Cleavage Candidates and the Politics of Gender
By Carey Roberts

This headline crossed my desk last week: "Gubernatorial Hopeful Flashes for Cash!" Below that exclamatory remark appeared a sketch of a well-endowed blond, her hands clutching the front of a low-cut jacket.

This cheap thrill did not grace the pages of a recent issue of Playboy magazine, nor was it the come-on for a back-alley peep show.

No, this was the official campaign literature of one Loretta Nall, libertarian candidate for the governorship of Alabama. (Read the rest here)

How Would Latin Americans Vote on Nov. 7?
By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

WASHINGTON—Many Latin Americans quip that they should get a chance to vote in U.S. elections since the outcomes have a huge impact south of the U.S. border. So, who are Latin Americans rooting for with regard to the midterm elections in the U.S.? Who stands to win and who stands to lose if the Republicans fail to keep control of one or both houses of Congress?

The overwhelming perception among Latin Americans is that Democrats are more protectionist than Republicans, so for countries such as Colombia and Peru that are eagerly awaiting ratification of their free trade agreements with the United States, the possibility of a Democratic victory is worrisome. If the Democratic win is modest, there is a small chance that the lame-duck Congress will be able to ratify these agreements before January. If it is a resounding victory, then it’s “hasta la vista, baby.” (Read the rest here)

Eminent-Domain Chutzpah
by Sheldon Richman

Talk about chutzpah! A development company is thinking about suing Florida and the city of Riviera Beach for refusing to use eminent domain to provide land for upscale condominiums and a marina. Viking Inlet Harbor Properties was assured the city would condemn a number of working-class homes, but the city council had second thoughts. Now the company fears the $50 million it has already spent acquiring other lots will go to waste. “I’m stuck with these properties but can’t develop them because I can’t fill in the puzzle pieces,” said Mike Clark, president of the development company’s real-estate division. Hence the possible lawsuit.

Ever since last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. New London, cities have had the green light to take people’s property for private redevelopment projects. The victims of eminent domain are usually working-class people who are forced to sacrifice their homes for the sake of luxury homes and shops. Sure, they get paid something, but it’s not a true market price and some of these folks don’t want to move at any price. (Read the rest here)

Is Debt Alone a Threat?
By Frank Shostak

Because of a prolonged and aggressive loose monetary policy, a situation can emerge when the pool of real funding starts shrinking. In short, there are now more activities that consume real wealth than activities that produce real wealth.

Once the pool of funding begins to fall, anything can trigger the so-called economic collapse. Obviously when things are starting to fall apart, banks try to get their money back. Once banks get their money (credit that was created out of thin air) and don't renew loans, the stock of money must fall. (Read the rest here)

Features: Liberty and Privacy: Connections
By Joseph S. Fulda

If property is liberty's other half, privacy is its guardian. The right to privacy is essential to the preservation of freedom for the simplest of reasons. If no one knows what I do, when I do it, and with whom I do it, no one can possibly interfere with it. Intuitively, we understand this, as witness our drawing the curtains and pulling the window shades down when prowlers are about. The threat to freedom comes from both the criminal and the state, from any and all ways and means in which others forcibly overcome our will. Just as we do not want burglars casing our homes, we should fear the government's intimate knowledge of the many details of our daily lives. (Read the rest here)

Iraqi Front:
Soldiers Mock Kerry
WND
As a national uproar continues over comments by Sen. John Kerry suggesting American troops were lazy and not bright, President Bush is hammering Kerry and fellow Democrats for their lack of strategy for winning the war in Iraq, while troops themselves are mocking Kerry. Kerry who told students at Pasadena City College in Southern California: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq. ..."

You've probably seen it, but it is too good NOT to share, although my friends at RRND and FND don't think so. Well, friends, this is a great big chuckle indeed - yes, soldiers aren't supposed to get political, but when you have idiots spouting off like this, some comments are bound to make it out to the public, and not just to other soldiers. Fact is, despite recent reductions in enlisted standards, American soldiers today are the most educated and smartest force in history - many NCOs (and all officers) have a MINIMUM of 4 year college degrees, and the number of graduate degrees even in the lower NCO ranks is surprising. No, the losers that Kerry talks about are loading docks at Wal-Mart or sweeping the floors at Burger King - while Congress (including the aforesaid Kerry) send our best and brightest to be killed for the convenience of the Congressional thugs and their campaign sponsors, and the old Parties of Death. If Kerry is trying to push hotheads in the military into staging a putsch, he is doing the right thing - but fortunately, most soldiers respect the Constitution (bad as it is) more than they want to punch out the esteemed thug and his fellows of both parties.

Mama's Note: The latest on this nutty deal: "He says he meant to say "get us stuck in Iraq," a botched joke intended to criticize President Bush, not troops. (Read the rest here )
