Why
Do You Carry A Gun?
By Susan Callaway, Editor Day nine for my open carry adventure in Wyoming. I carry my revolver all day, everywhere I go, except into the post office once a week. Not too happy about being a sitting duck there, but that's life right now. I plan to have my mail delivered to the house from now on, so that won't be such a problem. I've been to the grocery store several times, the hardware, paid my water bill and even went into the library. I walked the streets here, visiting local businesses - making new friends, and even went to WalMart in another town - in another state. Nobody seemed to notice the big Ruger on my belt. Everyone smiles and waves as before. The box boy at the grocery was a trifle apprehensive about my dog in the front seat - at least until the silly old beast licked his hand - but he never even stole a glance at the gun, far as I could tell. This is good. This is right. (Read the rest here)
Scaring
the Wits out of Women Halloween decorations made an early appearance this year. In September my local grocery store put up its wicked witch holding a rubber pitchfork. Cobwebs soon began to sprout like silvery hobgoblins, and scary Jack-O'-Lanterns now adorn front porches. Last week a reader sent me this ghoulish warning, which I now quote: Robbing Females Using the Bathrooms at Shopping Malls (Read the rest here)
Winners
and Losers It's said that high school football is a religion in the state of Texas. I've lived in Texas, and I personally think that "religion" might not be a strong enough word. In the state I currently live, high school football hasn't quite reached the status that it has in Texas. But on any given Friday night, you'll still see plenty of folks turn out for one high school football contest or another. During the course of the past couple of football seasons, I've attended a number of high school games myself. I actually like football, but I'm considerably less than interested if I don't care who wins. I've gone to games lately, though, because I do care. That's because a friend's son plays on one local team. (Read the rest here)

Asthma Treatment Provides Impressive Relief Without Drugs San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) -- Stanford Engineer Gary Craig introduces a new acupuncture without needles process that has generated impressive success for Asthma. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) was originally designed by Craig for emotional issues. However, it was soon discovered that many asthmatics, while using it for their emotional problems, simultaneously experienced improvements in their asthma symptoms. For some, their asthma cleared up completely. This is striking evidence that Asthma has emotional causes, says Craig, and we may have hit upon an important factor that I would urge the medical profession to explore. (Read the rest here)
How
Government Destroys Moral Character
Thou shalt not steal is a rule as old as human society itself. It must have been, else no complex human society would have proved viable. We are all taught very early to respect what belongs to others: Dont take your sisters toy away from her, your mother admonished, punishing you if you persisted in your toddlers larceny. By the time you were three years old, you understood the difference between mine and thine. If you didnt take the lesson to heart and persisted beyond your childhood years in treating everybodys property as something for you to take, so long as you could get away with it, then you were viewed as a sociopath, an enemy of decency and of civilization itself. Hail
to the Hungarians! Friends
of freedom should doff their hats to the Hungarians this week. Fifty years
ago, the Hungarian people bravely expelled Soviet tanks from Budapest
and proclaimed their intention to create a democracy. Shortly thereafter,
the Soviets returned with almost 5,000 tanks, killing thousands of Hungarians
and chaining that nation back into serfdom to Moscow. I was in Hungary shortly after the 30th anniversary of the uprising. There were no official celebrations then, perhaps because the Soviets still occupied the nation and were watching warily as the Hungarians made passive economic reforms intended to make socialism efficient. Drunk Driving In November 2000, Clinton signed a bill passed by Congress that ordered the states to adopt new, more onerous drunk-driving standards or face a loss of highway funds. That's right: the old highway extortion trick. Sure enough, states passed new, tighter laws against Driving Under the Influence, responding as expected to the feds' ransom note. The feds have declared that a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent and above is criminal and must be severely punished. The National Restaurant Association is exactly right that this is absurdly low. The overwhelming majority of accidents related to drunk driving involve repeat offenders with blood-alcohol levels twice that high. If a standard of 0.1 doesn't deter them, then a lower one won't either. (Read the rest here)

Commentary on the News, 22-27 October, 2006 Free Speech I suppose that there was some symbolism involved in RRND selecting a Malaysian paper for this story, which appeared many places, but just wasn't considered news by most. Malaysia, of course, is hardly a sterling example of a country promoting freedom and liberty, of the press or anything else. And the key here is "intimidation" - apparently a cop giving a baleful look to a gossip reporter as she double-parks counts. Press mavens are unlikely to "enjoy" the benefits of a habeas-corpus-free court system but continue to exercise their freedom of speech in this country to attack other freedoms, such as that of religion and of our right to defend ourselves.
