Violence
Against Women Act: The Fast Food of Law As I reflect on my own experiences with domestic violence and the pretense of help our abuse system claims to offer, I find myself feeling most sorry for today’s victims. As the years pass, our domestic violence systems under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) offer less and less help to the most severely battered, but ever increasing rewards for those who operate the systems. I encounter a frightening number of victims of severe battery with the same story to tell; they went through the courts and things got worse for them, almost immediately. I have experienced this myself, personally. (Read the rest here)
The
Feminization of Poverty? There You Go Again, Hillary! During my life I've traveled far and wide, visiting some of the most poverty-stricken regions of the world. And I've never seen anything that resembles a sex-based imbalance of poverty. Indeed, a 2000 document from the UN Economic and Social Council had to admit, "Despite observations on the 'feminization of poverty,' for example, the methodologies for measuring poverty among women respective to men are still inadequate." A recent report from the UN Development Program was even more pointed: "There is no evidence of systematic over-representation of women among the poor around the world." (Read the rest here)
Matthew
Bracken on Borders, Books, and the Future of Freedom In 2003, author Matthew Bracken published Enemies Foreign and Domestic, the first novel of a planned trilogy. With its focus on a government set-up that resulted in draconian gun control measures, it gained good reviews and much appreciation from readers. As gun control advocates have continued in their efforts to disarm the law abiding, it also seemed to offer some chilling warnings. This year, Bracken released the second novel in the trilogy. Domestic Enemies held onto the background established in the first novel, but added to it the probable result of continued unfettered illegal immigration into the country. Once again, the reality is striking even as the story holds the reader's interest. (Read the rest here)

Freedom Technique (EFT): A New Moment in Science Imagine for a moment a healing modality that, in less than 10 years, has become a highly valued method of more than five thousand medical doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, nurses and other members of the healing professions in dozens of countries. Imagine further that no surgery, drugs or equipment are needed. There is such a healing modality, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). (Read the rest here)
The O'Reilly Fear
Factor It should come as no surprise that conservative Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly is praising the military-detention bill that President Bush recently got through Congress. In a commentary dated September 29, 2007, O'Reilly said that "the only downside for the president is that interrogation methods like water boarding are no longer allowed." The new detainee law constitutes the most extreme reordering of America's criminal-justice system since our nation's founding. It cancels habeas corpus and fundamental procedural rights of due process that stretch back to Magna Carta. (Read the rest here)

Greedy Spinach Merchants Want To Kill You? Last month, news of an E. coli infection that originated in a bag of fresh spinach packaged by Natural Selections Foods, kicked off a nationwide frenzy. More than 180 people became sick from eating spinach, 97 of whom were hospitalized. One person died. The company in question is in total meltdown, and growers around the country are redoubling their efforts to make sure that every leaf is clean and pure. (Read the rest here)

The Archives: (10/14/03) In public, the Republicans talking heads are jumping for joy this week following the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Governorship of California. In private, the talking heads and the Republican leadership are quaking in their collective boots. They know that, given the situation, the likelihood is that the Party is going to end up with egg on their collective faces. The basic problem with the California economy (and by extension, almost every other state in the Union) is very, very simple: A century of rampant, unchecked socialism. (Read the rest here)
