Third Anniversary Issue

The Price of Liberty is Three Years Old
By Susan Callaway, Editor

It didn't hit me until today that our third anniversary was Sunday, October 01. I've spent some time since going through the oldest archives, trying to decide what to show you, and the sad reality is that we're saying the same old things about all the same old problems today as we were then. We don't seem to be making any headway against the tyranny and darkness that surrounds us on this old mud ball.

The only glimmer of hope is the growing number of people who seem to be waking up to smell the burning flesh around them! I'm hearing from more and more people who say they finally understand what we've been saying, and many of them ask what they can do to help. The only answer I can come up with is the same one we've been giving for a very long time: (Read the rest here)

Shooting Blanks
By Lady Liberty

In recent weeks, I've been urged to get behind a couple of bills in the House of Representatives. These bills, which are supported by the National Rifle Association, would be good for gun owners, I'm told.

According to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action:

H.R. 5092 - the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) Modernization and Reform Act of 2006," by Reps. Howard Coble (R-N.C.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) - will curb the agency's efforts to revoke dealers' licenses for minor paperwork errors, improve the appeals process for dealers, and establish new guidelines for BATFE investigations. This bill was drafted in large part to address recent, blatant BATFE abuses at Richmond, Virginia gun shows highlighted in hearings before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. It Takes A Police State To Raise A Child
By Doug Newman

In the aftermath of Wednesday's hostage taking and murder-suicide at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado, I can just hear all the gun grabbers proclaiming that it only goes to show that we cannot tolerate guns in -- or anywhere near -- schools. Well, one of their dream bills has just been passed by Congress.

On September 23, World Net Daily reported that the House of Representatives has passed an anti-drug and anti-weapon bill – HR 5295 -- that “would require local districts to develop search policies – including strip searches – with immunity against prosecution for teachers and staff." American: Patriot to Profiteer - Aaron Russo
An in depth review of "America: Freedom to Fascism''

By Ed Ward, MD

The Movie That Will Cause the Declaration of Worldwide Martial Law.

That's my review of Aaron Russo's Masterpiece of Rights. I cannot put it more strongly or simply. One way or the other, this is the movie of your life. The movie will make you sick to your stomach and aware of what the US government is doing by documented evidence of Both Political Parties' activity. We must act now or forever live in fear.

''America: Freedom to Fascism''' (A:FtF) is an extremely needed exceptional movie for the exposure and reform of this government's abuse of America. As one of the many activists that try to stay current with all areas of the Constitutional abuses of this government, enthusiastic surprise and relief overtook me as a post revealed "Aaron Russo's -'' America: Freedom to Fascism - Full Version - For movie screening only" on google video. Finally, here was the movie in which many are placing their hopes for release and discovery of much needed information available for mass consumption. (Read the rest here)

King George Bush and the Tortured Truth
By Captain Eric H. May - Ghost Troop Commander

The Truth about Torture

Polls show that six out of ten U.S. citizens disapprove of George W. Bush, who has had one of the worst weeks in his six-year reign. Monday the National Intelligence Report -- the consensus of his intelligence agencies' opinions -- made it clear that his war in Iraq is a failure, which has created rather than conquered enemies in the Middle East. Tuesday the Associated Press released a poll pointing out that most Iraqi citizens are in favor of insurgent attacks against U.S. occupation forces, while two-thirds want those forces out of their country ASAP. Thursday Bob Woodard of the Washington Post, a former fan of the White House war, published his third book on the "war president," State of Denial, and made up for all his previous sycophancy with a hard-hitting description of an administration in turmoil, without clear goals, barely propped up by a well-known Rovean notion: When in doubt, lie!

Gender Newspeak At Newsweek
By Carey Roberts

Now for tonight's "Behind the News" story:

Reneging on its duty to report the news fairly and accurately, the mainstream media now resorts to fake scandals and faux-tography to keep the audience entertained and its numbers juiced up. Nowhere is that more true than at Newsweek magazine.

Remember last year when Newsweek made the claim that military interrogators at Guantanamo had flushed a Koran down the toilet? But when 25,000 pages of documents failed to support the incendiary claim, Newsweek was forced to retract the account. But not before 16 persons died during ugly anti-American riots. VAWA Fails To Protect Women Who Need Protection The Most
By Terri Lynn Tersak

Jane Williamson (not her real name) suffered repeated blows to her head. She went to an abuse shelter and complained about ringing in her right ear and blurred vision in her eye. The shelter staff was unable to detect any visible signs of her partner’s assault. They told her the symptoms would soon clear up, then sent her off to see a psychiatrist.

Within a few days Jane became deaf in that ear and blind in one eye. She will never recover her senses. Her attacker never saw a single minute in jail, nor did he pay a cent toward her medical bills. (Read the rest here)

Roads Are Too Important to be Left to Governments
By Gabriel Roth

Billions of dollars and an overwhelming amount of time are wasted every year in traffic congestion. Might there be relief in sight? Earlier this year, former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta announced a federal initiative to relieve transportation congestion, largely with the help of private fees and tolls. "Congestion is not a fact of life," rightly declared Mr. Mineta, "We need a new approach, and we need it now." One such approach would be to enable the market economy, on which we depend for most other goods and services, to also provide roads. Toll roads were privately supplied two hundred years ago on a large scale in both the U.S. and the UK. Their private provision today is even more practical because modern technology enables customers to pay for road use without tollbooths, and even without vehicles having to stop. Outsourcing Torture
by Sheldon Richman

If you want to see the bare essence of the Bush administration, behold its policy of "rendition." The innocuous-sounding word signifies a policy under which American officials send terrorist suspects -- detainees never convicted of crimes -- to countries where they will be tortured, keeping the U.S. government's hands clean of the monstrous treatment.

Can anyone with a sense of justice or humane bone in his body defend such a shameful policy? (Read the rest here)

The Antifederalists Were Right
By Gary Galles

September 27 marks the anniversary of the publication of the first of the Antifederalist Papers in 1789. The Antifederalists were opponents of ratifying the US Constitution. They feared that it would create an overbearing central government, while the Constitution's proponents promised that this would not happen. As the losers in that debate, they are largely overlooked today. But that does not mean they were wrong or that we are not indebted to them. (Read the rest here)

What's Wrong With The Pledge of Allegiance
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

To most Americans, the Pledge of Allegiance is that 15-second annoyance that signaled the start of another school day. The ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, concerning the constitutionality of the words “under God,” turned this distant memory into a firestorm of debate. What’s ironic about the Court’s decision is the “under God” provision, which the Court ruled unconstitutional, is the only part of the Pledge that is factually and historically accurate.

The wording of the Pledge makes several inferences concerning the system of government established by the Constitution. First, the several States and the American people were consolidated into one nation or republic. Second, there is only one United States and the term refers to a single nation. Third, the flag is the symbol of this consolidated nation. Fourth, one of the purposes of establishing the so-called “one nation” was to guarantee “liberty and justice for all.” Since most Americans have never pondered the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance beyond the “under God” provision, this article will examine the other words of the Pledge. Libertarian Commentary on the News, 24-30 September 2006.
Welcome to Fall 2006! Let's start this week with some old controversies revived with fresh challenges! Hooray for rabble-rousers! (Even if I dinna necessarily agree wit' what they are fussin' about!)

Culture Wars: GA- '56 flag defenders out to oust Perdue
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"They helped rout former Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes in 2002, and now they're rallying their troops for a run at Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue. Supporters of the 1956 state flag with its dominant Confederate cross plan a final all-out charge to oust a Georgia governor who outflanked their no-retreat-no-surrender efforts to keep the controversial banner flying. 'We can't elect our own governor. We've tried, but we don't have enough votes. What we can do is make 'em one-termers,' said Elijah Coleman, a Mableton member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans." (09/24/06)

Spoiler tactics is sometimes the only weapon available, but in the right time and place, it can be enough to help a strong minority win - or at least, not lose. (Read the rest here - 2 full pages)
