September 11, 2006 - Anniversary of Terror in America

Big Government Solutions Don't Work/ The Law of Opposites
by Congressman Ron Paul - R - TX

Politicians throughout history have tried to solve every problem conceivable to man, always failing to recognize that many of the problems we face result from previous so-called political solutions. Government cannot be the answer to every human ill. Continuing to view more government as the solution to problems will only make matters worse.

Not too long ago, I spoke on this floor about why I believe Americans are so angry in spite of rosy government economic reports. The majority of Americans are angry, disgusted, and frustrated that so little is being done in Congress to solve their problems. The fact is a majority of American citizens expect the federal government to provide for every need, without considering whether government causes many economic problems in the first place. This certainly is an incentive for politicians to embrace the role of omnipotent problem solvers, since nobody asks first whether they, the politicians themselves, are at fault. (Read the rest here)

Massive Terrorist Cells Identified in US
By Ed Ward, MD

On September 5, 2006, with reference of this National Security Council (NSC) document, our Commandant and Thief Bush has identified the ‘new terrorists’ whose numbers range from a little over 40 million to as many as 105 million members. Sixteen percent of this nation is now classified as "recruiting terrorists’ in the ‘War on Ideas" by their "false and corrupt conspiracy theory" that this elitist government planted explosives in the WTC buildings. Another 20% believes this fascist government merely assisted in the death of almost 3,000 Americans. The new terrorists have been identified and they are US - The People of America.

Along with declaring over 100 million Americans terrorists, Herr Bush noted implementations of government actions with the statement, it is a “strategy we’ve been pursuing since September 11, 2001.” The preface for the declaration of American terrorists was unveiled in a speech before the General Assembly of the UN on November 10, 2001, with the statement, “Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of September the 11th, malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the terrorists themselves...” (Read the rest here)

UPDATE to RED ALERT 9/11/06 (NASA, Ft. Monroe & Houston)
By Captain Eric H. May

Since Labor Day the media has blitzed us with terror, showing the official devil, Osama Bin Laden -- along with the official diabolical team, Al Qaeda. He praises the 19 hijacking terrorists officially blamed for the 9/11/01 attack, and the 19 are shown making pre-martyrdom statements with the flaming Twin Towers and Pentagon in the background. Other masked and menacing minions practice karate kicks and judo grapples as they go through rigorous training.

Even normally mum mainstream media joke that it seems Bin Laden works for George W. Bush. In the wake of the Bin Laden propaganda package, Bush has asked Congress to strengthen his powers against the judiciary and Constitution with specific regulation authorizing domestic spying and Gitmo torture -- all to protect the public, of course.

Cruel Precedent
By Lady Liberty

The point here isn't just that of animal cruelty (though frankly that's bad enough) or of child abuse (which is even worse). It is, instead, the precedent that's set. No matter how awful you or I might think something is, if we start small and work our way up, it's possible to inoculate ourselves against our horror (though in all fairness, there's a line the vast majority of sane people won't cross no matter the rationale or the provocation). It works even better if we don't know we're being desensitized.

That's how government abuses work. They start small. They start with an excuse that many of us are willing to buy. And then, as the public is desensitized, the abuses are gradually increased. By the time we realize the level of the abuse to which we're being subjected, it's too late for us to have nipped it in the bud. In fact, it's often too late to do much at all. But just as one kitten can be rescued, so can one gun owner. Just as one dog can be saved, so can one property owner. Precedents can be set in the opposite direction. (Read the rest here)

Arrogance!
by NonEntity

"But, absent a government and certain rules, don't you think that things wouldn't work very well? I mean, the vast majority of people are not really capable of running things, wouldn't you say?"

This is basically what a caller to Stefan Molyneux's Saturday call-in show (start around 20 minutes) had to say as an argument for requiring people to obey rulers. I must say that he is right. Without certain organizing principles and those empowered with the necessary force to carry out the plans and strictures, the world would most likely not come out the way that this fellow believes that it should. Harassment Hysteria Threatens Military Morale
By Carey Roberts

Last year Naval Academy instructor Lt. Bryan Black made a sexually-tinged remark to a female midshipman. It was not a case of rape or sexual assault. It was not even "I'll trade you a better grade for certain sexual favors." Rather, the comment was a vulgar remark - much like something you might hear during a Sex in the City re-run.

But Cupcake got offended and filed a complaint. The complaint eventually made its way to the Naval Academy's superintendent, Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt. All of sudden, Black found himself the target of a criminal investigation.

Domestic Violence Homicide
By Richard L. Davis

Our homes and neighborhoods are dangerous places for both females and males. Anyone remotely familiar with the criminal justice system understands that the vast majority of homicides, regardless of age or gender, are not committed by strangers. However, despite the constant media reports about female homicide victimization, male homicide victimization is quite common.

Both offenders and victims of homicides can be intimate/family members. The FBI Supplemental Homicide Report (SHR) defines intimate/family members as relatives, step-relatives, in-laws, and common law or ex-spouses. Neither the Federal government nor the states define domestic violence as violence only or primarily against women. (Read the rest here)

Take Back the Schools? From Whom?
by Tammy Drennan

"Don't just hammer public schools. Go in there and take them back." - Finn Laursen, Christian Educators Association International, quoted in an AP article in The Boston Herald, 9/2/06

Take them back from whom? The government? Other parents? The taxpayers? The teachers' unions? The textbook publishers? The special interests? The school boards? The religious community?

You see the problem. State schools, financed by the public at large, cannot be taken "back" by any one group. They don't belong to you or anyone else. They're up for grabs. Hundreds, if not thousands, of interests, ranging from social to religious to business, vie daily for their share of the public school pie. The highest bidder wins and everyone else plays by his rules until someone topples him from his perch and the rules change yet again. (Read the rest here)

TeenScreen - Normal Kids Labeled Mentally Ill
By Evelyn Pringle

Despite years of public outcry, based on recommendations by President Bush's New Freedom Commission to screen all school children for mental illness, TeenScreen is now being administered in the nation's public school system and children are being regularly diagnosed with one, or more, disorders chosen from the close to 400 listed in the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV" (DSM), also known as the psychiatric "Billing Bible."

The list of mental disorders to chose from when diagnosing children mentally ill with TeenScreen, are "voted" into the Billing Bible by members of the American Psychiatric Association, and include, among others, conduct disorder, avoidant personality disorder, mathematics disorder, reading disorder, disorder of written expression, general anxiety disorder, nightmare disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and factious disorder. What If the U.S. and Iranian Presidents Did Debate?
By Ivan Eland

The outspoken President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran has challenged President Bush to debate U.S.-Iran relations. Bush has dismissed the offer and declined. Debate is not good–faith negotiation between the opposing parties, but it is better than nothing. And it might not be as one–sided as most Americans think. We could certainly fantasize about how such a debate might play out. (Read the rest here)

A Real Free Market Benefits Workers
By Sheldon Richman

Hands are wringing over bleak reports that despite increased productivity, workers are falling behind: real median income -- adjusted for government-caused inflation -- is said to be falling. Meanwhile, corporate profits are skyrocketing, and the wealthiest are doing fine.

In other words, the benefits of economic growth are said to be distributed unfairly. (Read the rest here)

How We Come to Own Ourselves
By N. Stephan Kinsella

The primary social evil of our time is lack of respect for self-ownership rights. It is what underlies private crime as well as institutionalized crime perpetrated by the state. State laws, regulations, and actions are objectionable just because the state is claiming the right to control how someone's body is to be used. (Read the rest here)

Stand Accountable And Resign!
An Entire US 'Regime Change'
By Dorothy Anne Seese

Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Karl Rove, Condoleezza Rice and Dick Cheney should immediately resign their positions. Military personnel beginning at a rank no lower than Brigadier General should be disciplined for the outrages we have witnessed in the Middle East. George W. Bush, right now, isn't in a position to resign but he may have to, leaving Dennis Hastert as another unqualified president. I'm not the least bit interested as to what that does to the Republican Party, but guaranteeing the election of a useless Democrat won't solve anything either. Thus I would thrust into the media spotlight a third party candidate who could be vetted and pass the highest tests for credibility and give the "never ending jackass and elephant circus" a run out of town without their tents.

The lack of credibility of our present leadership makes their apologies stink like raw sewage in a worldwide pollution outbreak. We know hot air comes out of Washington D.C. but in this case, the source seems to be the leadership's alimentary tract. (Read the rest here) (From May, 2004)

The Pro-War Media's Re-Positioning Problem
by Gary North

Fox News and the other pro-war media outlets are now facing the day of reckoning. The United States is slowly losing the war in Iraq. More important for the pro-war media, pro-war consumers of soap are becoming anti-war.

When a true believer switches sides on a major belief, he does not want to hear people spouting the belief that he has now abandoned. He wants to hear something else. Today, millions of Americans are abandoning faith in Bush's wars.

If those media broadcasters that openly defend this abandoned belief do not change, they will lose market share. People will simply stop listening. But, as I will show, they dare not change. (Read the rest here) (Other good articles on this page.)

Libertarian Commentary on the News, 2-9 September 2006

This week seems to be a bit better than last week, perhaps because the economic news is a bit better (relatively, only, of course).

The Economy: Dip in gas prices may lift entire economy
Christian Science Monitor
"Motorists are finally getting a break at the pump. Over the past month, gasoline prices have dropped more than 30 cents a gallon with the price of fuel at the lowest level since mid-April. The falling prices are a welcome benefit to consumers who have been grumbling all year about how much more it costs to fill their tanks. With more money in motorists' pockets, the economy should benefit as well since this is the time of year when consumers tend to spend more time at the mall. In fact, the ripple effect of falling energy prices should help everyone from Detroit automakers to the airline industry to incumbents running for office this fall. 'The decline in gasoline prices has the effect of a tax cut,' says Richard DeKaser, chief economist at National City Corporation, a bank in Cleveland. 'Of course it's only partly reversing the 'tax increases' of the past three years.'" (09/05/06)

Written on Tuesday: I really don't know where the "30 cents" is taking place: we've dropped perhaps 20 locally, and not even that much some places. Still, I'll not look a gift horse in the mouth, even if I don't hold my breath waiting for gas to hit $2.00 by Spring, or even $2.50 by Thanksgiving, as some pundits have claimed. (Not that I don't wish it would!: Say $2.50 by Thanksgiving, $2.00 by New Years, $1.50 by President's Day, and $1.00 by April Fools?) See the next article for my more optimistic view at the end of the week.

Mama's Note: Twenty cents drop? Where? It's still 305.9 a gallon here in Newcastle, unchanged for weeks. sigh And if we do see a significant drop, wouldn't it be nice if people used that money to pay off some debt? Heaven forbid we don't spend every penny!! There won't be any real improvement in the economy until the government quits printing fake money and running up ever greater debts. This is an illusion at best. (Read the rest here - 2 full pages)
