As we celebrate the 230th Anniversary of the brave and bold decision by our Founders to rebel against the tyranny of the Crown of England, not just to change governments but to change nations, we should remember that ANY document can be twisted and distorted - that ANY freedom can be abused and turned into license - that ANY liberty can taken away (or at least that an attempt will be made to do so). We should also remember that like those thirteen colonies (of whom Ben Franklin said "we must hang together or we shall surely hang separately."), our liberties are NOT individual and separate and distinct from each other - without some, others will be worthless or soon disappear altogether.

We in this nation have allowed one freedom, clearly stated in the Bill of Rights, to all but vanish - to be "regulated" by virtually every level of government "for the public safety," even while they paid lip-service to it. That is, of course, the right of individuals, of HUMANS, to keep and bear arms. Today, in some cities of our nation, that right is all but extinguished.

At least one city, in the light of national attention, has attempted to revoke that right during a time of disaster and crisis, and has stated (even while inviting armed troops to reestablish law and order in it) that it will do so again "should the need arise." In numerous cities, counties, and even states, that right to keep and bear arms is regulated nearly to death through a wide array of laws and regulations and interpretations that make it costly, make it difficult, and make it socially unacceptable to have weapons of self-defense.

On the national level, attempt after attempt is made in all branches of government to further control and limit and regulate weapons - all while paying lip-service to obeying the Constitution that enshrines that right for ALL citizens.

Imagine if we applied that same standard to a couple of other "rights" also clearly stated in the Bill of Rights. Imagine if the courts said that only certain limited uses of those rights were permitted "for the public good" and that agencies could be set up to "properly administer" the use of those rights by citizens; imagine if those rights could be limited to certain times, to certain places, to certain methods of exercising those rights, to certain people with certain qualifications or education or experience, or only if an appropriate permission slip (CCW, etc.) is in your wallet or on your wall - just as is done with the right to keep and bear weapons for our self-defense, for the defence of our families, our homes, and our communities, and for "the security of a free state."

Therefore, I invite you to peruse the next steps in securing the freedoms of our ancestors for the twenty-first century: Free Speech Permits, and Press Permits. Remember that it was a president of the United States that said that sometimes freedom must be curtailed and regulated. Here is how we can do it again!
